A sea of contested evidence: Disputes over coastal pollution in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa

Beukes, Amy 23 June 2022 (has links)
The City of Cape Town's (CoCT) wastewater management system discharges effluent from households, industries and other sources into the Atlantic Ocean through deep-water marine outfalls in Green Point, Camps Bay and Hout Bay. At total capacity, these three outfalls discharge 55.3 megalitres (Ml) into marine receiving environments daily. With minimal pre-treatment that amounts to screening and sieving, this results in microbial and chemical pollution of the sea (including chemicals of emerging concern), marine organisms, recreational beaches, and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This research focuses on contestations over evidence of that pollution in Hout Bay. The study documents the work of independent scientists seeking to provide evidence of coastal pollution obtained via microbial and chemical analyses of water (coastal and inland) and marine organisms (Mytilus galloprovincialis) samples. It also presents accounts of pollution obtained via ethnographic research with local residents, fishers, frequent water users and river activists who have observed and experienced poor coastal water quality. However, the form of evidence that is considered and informs decision-making processes by the CoCT has consistently sought to invalidate these forms of evidence, from both independent scientists and the public. Debates around knowledge of water and contests over evidence that highlight the entanglements of science, politics, and ways of knowing make visible a consistent pattern in coastal water-quality governance by the City, which results in inaction regarding the ever-growing issue of coastal pollution in Cape Town.

A brave new building : réédition expérimentale et design d'information

Desjardins, Olivier 17 April 2018 (has links)

Learning to program, learning to teach programming: pre- and in service teachers' experiences of an object-oriented language

Govender, I. (Irene) 30 November 2006 (has links)
The quest for a better way to learn and teach programming, in particular object-oriented programming, is a challenge that continues to intrigue computer science educators. Even after decades of research in learning to program, educators still search for the optimal instructional approach that will solve the `learning to program effectively' problem among introductory programming students. The aim of this study was to gain insight into, and to suggest possible explanations for, the "qualitatively different ways" in which students experience learning to program using an object-oriented programming language, and to recommend teaching and learning strategies as a result of the outcomes of the research. In order to achieve these aims, a combination of phenomenographic research methods and elements of activity theory have been employed to gain an in depth understanding of pre- and in-service teachers' learning experiences. The categories of description for the phenomenon, learning to program and the influence of the learning context have been analysed and described in detail. It is argued that understanding learning to program using Java, in order to teach programming involves more than understanding learning to program as it is normally taught in university programming courses. In addition to object-oriented concepts such as message passing, inheritance, polymorphism, delegation and overriding, it entails understanding how learning to program is reflected in the goals of instruction and in different instructional practices. Knowledge of learning to program must also be linked to knowledge of students' thinking, so that teachers have conceptions of typical trajectories of student learning, and can use this knowledge to recognize landmarks of understanding in individuals. The findings suggest relationships among students' affective appraisals of the value of learning to program, their conceptions of learning to program, their approaches to learning it, their evaluations of their performance in tests and examinations and outcomes of their actions. The relationships emerged from student descriptions of their actions and the way in which different aspects of their learning and outcomes related to one another were qualitatively described and in some cases, quantified. In particular, the tensions between prior programming knowledge of a procedural language and current learning of an object-oriented language have emerged in the study. This has implications for teaching, as this study was set against the backdrop of the change in programming language in high schools, from a procedural to an object-oriented language. / Mathematical Sciences / PhD (Maths, Science and Technology Education)

How the process of doctrinal standardization during the later Roman Empire relates to Christian triumphalism

Moore, David Normant 06 1900 (has links)
My thesis examines relations among practitioners of various religions, especially Christians and Jews, during the era when Jesus’ project went from being a Galilean sect, to a persecuted minority, to religio licita status, and eventually to imperial favor, all happening between the first century resurrection of Jesus and the fourth century rise of Constantine. There is an abiding image of the Church in wider public consciousness that it is unwittingly and in some cases antagonistically exclusionist. This is not a late-developing image. I trace it to the period that the church developed into a formal organization with the establishment of canons and creeds defined by Church councils. This notion is so pervasive that an historical retrospective of Christianity of any period, from the sect that became a movement, to the Reformation, to the present day’s multiple Christian iterations, is framed by the late Patristic era. The conflicts and solutions reached in that period provided enduring definition to the Church while silencing dissent. I refer here to such actions as the destruction of books and letters and the banishment of bishops. Before there emerged the urgent perceived need for doctrinal uniformity, the presence of Christianity provided a resilient non-militant opponent to and an increasing intellectual critique of all religious traditions, including that of the official gods that were seen to hold the empire together. When glaringly manifest cleavages in the empire persisted, the Emperor Constantine sought to use the church to help bring political unity. He called for church councils, starting with Nicaea in 325 CE that took no account for churches outside the Roman Empire, and many within, even though councils were called “Ecumenical.” The presumption that the church was fully representative without asking for permission from a broader field of constituents is just that: a presumption. This thesis studies the ancient world of Christianity’s growth to explore whether, in that age of new and untested toleration, there was a more advisable way of responding to the invitation to the political table. The answer to this can help us formulate, and perhaps revise, some of our conduct today, especially for Christians who obtain a voice in powerful places. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Peuplements et paysages aux confins occidentaux du territoire des Arvernes de la protohistoire au moyen âge / Settlements and landscapes on the western borders of the territory of the Arvernes from protohistory to the Middle Ages

Massounie, Guy 09 June 2015 (has links)
The opening of the window of study of Combrailles provides new insights into the power and the wealth of the city of Arvernes. The occupacy of the territory is continuous from the Protohistory to the Middle Ages, with a great development at the time of the Roman Empire. The layout of two major ways is established : the density of population along their path proves the role they played. The settlement of the habitat (including those of the elites) on the whole territory shows the economic complementarity between rural areas and the cities. The density of mining spaces and the exploitation of gold during the Gallic period certainly contribute to the richness of Arvernes.

The phenomenon of children and adolescents experiencing destitution and abandonment has become even worse in our country. This felt fact instigates us to take a position and to research this matter in hand which urgently unveils itself in our society. This study aims to answer three questions: 1) How have I, as a researcher, become interested in streets and how have streets become my place of work, evoking a feeling into my ways of being as a(n) (social) educator conducting a research in streets?; 2) What is and How is to exist in streets undergoing such a status quo?; 3) How can we understand the power of a group in the existential survival of children and adolescents living in streets? Thus, the subject or matter/phenomenon of this study/research is the genesis (what is) and the interdynamics not separate from the genesis (how is) of the human being (boy or girl and/or child or adolescent living in streets) in the ways (s)he reveals her/himself, shows her/himself, appears, and allows her/himself to be captured by the look of a scientist who also has a feeling relation to the streets. To do so, we have resorted to the the exitential-phenomenological inspiration, since we are interested in what has been lived and exprerienced by these human beings. The chosen theoretical marks have risen out of the categories of: Paulo Freire (the importance of dialogue ), Victor E. Frankl ( life sense ), and Hiran Pinel ( the ways of being as being oneself in the world s everyday life ). We understand that children and adolescents show diverse ways of being as being ... ephemeral, finite, incomplete, etc. like life itself. Therefore, sometimes they are bold , sometimes they are dramatic in their modes of lives; however, always being brave and having ingenious tactics such as forming survival and resistance groups in order to be able to live in streets or discussing their matters so as to understand themselves, even if they do not manage to meet regularly. This study has shown significant implications to the construction of public politics (social and educational) and politics of impact to the social educator s everyday live and to that of the school teacher s as well. Such inclusive processes can be made viable since these ways of being as being a(n) are understood.
