The prevalence and profile of musculoskeletal pain in elite wheelchair basketball players of different point classifications in South Africa

Mateus, Isabel Sita Maharaj January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Department of Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Background There has been a remarkable increase in the participation of sport for athletes with disabilities. Consequently, there have been many international studies on injuries in athletes which have shown a high prevalence in wheelchair basketball, largely attributed to the fast-paced, high intensity nature of the sport. This sport has grown worldwide including South Africa, however, very little research has been published on South African wheelchair basketball players and more research is, therefore, needed. Aim To determine the prevalence and profile of musculoskeletal pain in elite wheelchair basketball players of different point classifications in South Africa. Hypothesis 1: Upper extremity (including neck and back) pain is experienced more commonly in lower point classified wheelchair basketball players than in higher point classified players. Hypothesis 2: Lower extremity pain is experienced more commonly in higher point classified players than in lower point classified players Method This study was a quantitative, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study. The questionnaire comprised of sub-sections on demographics and disability characteristics; activity levels pertaining to wheelchair basketball and other sport/physical activity; the prevalence of pain and the impact thereof on wheelchair basketball and/or activities of daily living. This questionnaire was administered to 48 wheelchair basketball players who were competing in the 2015 Supersport League. A response rate of 70% was decided as the lower limit cut-off for statistical power. Results Fourty-three participants responded yielding an 89.58% response rate. The mean age of participants was 33.3 (SD:9.5) years and the majority of participants (n=35) were male and African (n=29). Out of the 43 participants, 79.1% (n=34) used mobility devices, the majority (n=20) used wheelchairs. Most of the participants (n=41) played wheelchair basketball for more than five years and 32 participants did not participate in other sport. Almost half of the participants (n=25) experienced musculoskeletal pain in the last twelve months or at present, 75% of whom (n=12) visited a Physiotherapist for the pain. More than half of these participants (n=15; 60%) reported that the pain negatively affected their basketball performance. It was established that arm pain occurred frequently in lower point classified players (1.0-2.5 point players) and that hand and wrist pain was also more prevalent in lower point players than in higher point players. The prevalence of lower extremity pain was low and there was no statistically significant difference between higher and lower point classified players. Conclusions and Recommendations The finding that upper extremity pain occurred more frequently in lower point classified players was in keeping with the first hypothesis (the null hypothesis was, therefore, rejected). The second hypothesis was, however, rejected (and the null hypothesis was, therefore, accepted) as lower extremity pain did not occur more frequently in higher point classified players than in lower point classified players. The Eta scores may have been higher and may have shown a much larger than typical relationship between point classification and the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain had there been a larger sample size. Notwithstanding this limitation, it is a challenge to obtain a significantly larger sample size due to the nature and limited number of participants in this sport. More studies are warranted on this group of individuals, as a large number experienced pain which affected more than half of the participants’ performance in wheelchair basketball. These studies are important for the future success of the South African players and the sport in South Africa. / M

Jėgos ugdymo programos poveikis vežimėlių krepšinio žaidėjų specialiesiems fiziniams gebėjimams / Strength training influence on wheelchair basketball players physical characteristics and special abilities

Baltrušaitytė, Lina 25 May 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Most of the authors, researching on physical characteristics and special abilities indicators of basketball players with a various level of disability, noted that rates of the players with the highest degree of disability (on the scale of 1-2 points) are worse than of those with a disability on a slighter scale. However little research has been done on the influence of the programs dedicated to wheelchair basketball players’ physical characteristics and special abilities. In this case, new research on the influence of strength training program on wheelchair basketball players’ physical characteristics and special abilities is a matter of great relevance. Aim of the study: 1. Measure and evaluate the influence of strength training program on wheelchair basketball players’ physical characteristics. 2. Measure and evaluate the influence of strength training on wheelchair basketball players’ velocity and agility. 3. Measure and evaluate the influence of strength training on wheelchair basketball players’ aerobic and anaerobic endurance. 4. Measure and evaluate the influence of strength training on wheelchair basketball players’ aim to shoot and ball-passing accuracy special abilities. Volunteers participated in two-week ordinary program camp and two week strength training program camp, both held at Paraplegic Association Landscape Therapy and Recreation Centre in Monciskes in 2009. Special physical abilities tests were performed on 54 wheelchair basketball players. Based on... [to full text]

Emotional intelligence in diverse populations : theory to intervention

Diehl, Caren January 2010 (has links)
This research tested the relationship between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and mood states prior to performance, using two culturally diverse populations and using a mixed methodology. The objective was to explore whether there were cultural differences between the two samples thereafter exploring whether EI can be enhanced in the two cultures, using a psychological skills intervention. Phase 1 and 2 used the BRUMS-32 (Terry et al., 1999), and the EIS (Schutte et al., 1998) to investigate mood states and EI among a sample of UK wheelchair basketball players (phase 1: n = 51), and Ghanaian footballers (phase 2: n = 70). Five semi-structured interviews were also completed in phase 1. In phase 3 interventions (goal-setting, self-talk, relaxation and daily diaries) were used to enhance EI in a sample of UK wheelchair basketball players (n = 6) and Ghanaian football players (n = 8). Self-talk questionnaires, daily diaries, EIS and structured interviews were used to collect data during the intervention. Phase 1 MANOVA results showed that EI was related to mood states associated with optimal and dysfunctional performance (Wilks' Lambda 8.7 = .01, F = 74.76, P = .00, Partial Eta2 = .99) and indicated that optimism and utilisation of emotions contributed significantly to variation in mood by performance. Four key themes emerged from semi-structured interviews: antecedents of emotions; emotion and performance; emotional intelligence; and coping with emotions. Results suggested that EI correlated with performance. Phase 2, MANOVA results showed that EI was related to mood states associated with optimal and dysfunctional performance (Wilks' Lambda 8.40 = .50, F = 7.82, P < .00, Partial Eta2 = .50) and indicated that emotion regulation and appraisal of other‟s emotions contributed significantly to variations in mood by performance. When seen collectively, results of phase 1 and 2 indicate that there were cultural differences between the two populations.Phase 3 indicated that in both populations EI could be enhanced for some of the participants. Culture could be an explanation for the intervention only partially working. The EI theory or the EIS may only work in the culture it was developed in as it did not seem to detect changes in the Ghanaian sample.

ŠIAULIŲ IR KAUNO SPORTININKŲ, ŽAIDŽIANČIŲ VEŽIMĖLIŲ KREPŠINĮ, TRENIRUOČIŲ EFEKTYVUMO LYGINAMOJI ANALIZĖ / TRAINING EFFICIENCY COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF KAUNAS AND ŠIAULIAI SPORTSMEN PLAYING WEELS BASKETBALL

Jackevičius, Mindaugas 29 September 2008 (has links)
2. Nustatyta, kad didžiausią poveikį vežimėlių krepšinio žaidėjų fizinėms ypatybėms ir žaidimo įgūdžiams turi žaidimo stažas. Palyginus abiejų komandų žaidimo stažą, matome, kad vidutiniškai Kauno komandos sportininkai vežimėlių krepšinį sportuoja 8.6... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In this paper the analysis of training effectiveness of sportsmen playing wheelchair basketball was fulfilled in Kaunas and Šiauliai. The research was make with the help of testing to fix and evaluate the pecullarities of disabled sportsmen playing wheelchair-basketball ( endurance, speed, agility ) and the level of skills ( throwing the ball into the basket, going with the ball ) and the factors of the game. Sportsmen from Šiauliai and Kaunas from the wheelchair basketball teams took part in the research. In the empirical part of the research the peculiarities of physical features of disabled sportsmen, the level of skills, the age, the length of the play and the degree of being disabled were compared. The main conclusions of the empiric part are: 1. After having estimated the level of skills and physical peculiarities of disabled basketballers between Kaunas and Šiauliai, we can state that the results of Kaunas sportsmen are superior. The experience of the Kaunas players is of great significance (x=8,6). 2. It is determined that the experience of the game has a very great influence on the physical peculiarities of the sportsmen. Comparing the experience of both teams we can see that Kaunas sportsmen have been playing basketball for 8,6 years but the sportsmen of Šiauliai team only 3,3 years. So this decided better physical skills and rezults of the Kaunas team sportsmen. 3. Having evaluated the dependence of physical peculiarities and skills of disabled sportsmen upon... [to full text]

Análise isocinética dos músculos rotadores do ombro em atletas de basquetebol adaptado e indivíduos sedentários com lesão medular / Isokinetic muscle Analysis shoulder rotators in adapted basketball athletes and sedentary individuals with spinal cord injury

Freitas, Poliane Silva 26 July 2016 (has links)
The shoulder joint is much, requested in individuals with spinal cord injury wheelchair users, at offset journal, in wheelchair propulsion, as well as in practice to-sports. Facing this reality, the present research aimed to evaluate and compare the performance through muscle peak torque fixed by body mass, the work and the power of the rotator cuff muscle groups, related to the movements of internal and external rotation of the shoulder, in basketball, wheelchair athletes with spinal cord injury, comparing them to individuals with spinal cord injury, sedentary using as an instrument the isokinetic dynamometer 4 BIODEX® brand. 36 individuals were evaluated with spinal cord injury, with complete injury levels below T1 and between the ages of 18 to 45 years. Being 18 individuals athletes of wheelchair basketball and wheelchair accessible, sedentary individuals 18. The isokinetic tests were performed in a sitting position, with the shoulder in 45° of abduction in scapula and 30° of flexion in the frontal plane, with range of motion of 70°, and 40° in external rotation and 30° for internal rotation. The Protocol was carried out through the isokinetic test with 5 reps for 60°/s speeds and 180°/s with purpose to assess the peak torque/weight and work, and 10 repetitions at 300°/s to assess muscle power, in both shoulders, with 1 minute interval between repetitions. The comparisons between the variables were assessed the Chi-square test or Fisher\'s exact test. For the analysis of the differences between the media of the variables keep, used the t test, with a significance level of 5%. As a result, it was observed there similarity between the groups Anthropometric, that the peak torque/weight work and muscle power of internal and external rotators of both shoulders of the athletes of wheelchair basketball was significantly higher when compared with the control group, the tested velocities (P < 0.001) and correlation of muscle strength gain with time of spinal cord injury. It is concluded that the wheelchair athletes has increased muscle performance in relation to wheelchair users who do not practice any kind of sport.

Wheeling to London 2012 : the psycho-social health and well-being of Great Britain's Wheelchair Basketball players over time

Best, Melanie January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this PhD was to explore the psycho-social health (PSH) and well-being (WB) of Great Britain's (GB) Wheelchair Basketball (WhB) players over time, starting from when they became disabled and culminating in the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The sample comprised 16 players (8 male, 8 female) and 4 coaches. They were interviewed on three occasions - 2 years before, within a year of and a year after London. Observations spanned this period, whilst data was also collected via two visual methods: auto-photography (AP) and timelining. All data was analysed using a thematic analytical approach. First the challenges to PSH and WB of being disabled are discussed, with the diversity of experience highlighted. Secondly in exploring the role of spinal units and story-tellers in initiating players into sport, a lottery which risked their PSH and WB is exposed. Whilst copious benefits of recreational disability sport are described, being a GB WhB player is revealed as an extreme health rollercoaster. Just as being a Paralympian offers perks and privileges, so too does it risk players becoming obsessed. Performance and health are shown to be uniquely related and yet not always simultaneously achievable. Finally, from the pride of wearing the jersey and competing at a home Paralympics, to shattered dreams and unfulfilled ambitions, London 2012 is relived. The research concludes that creating a 'Healthy Paralympian' is a challenging task and yet winning formula. Recommendations are made to realise this aim, whilst those which have already been adopted by GB WhB are also shared.

Eight integrants of Piracicaba´s team had participated in this research. Initially eight of participants three had been selected, and after only one satisfied some criteria: to be handicapped that uses wheelchair for his locomotion, to be adult and to be Basketball practitioner. The individual identified here as JM was choose because he satisfied the selection criteria and presented a life history narrative more deepened with greater conscience of his life. The Ciampa´s Identity Metamorphosis theoretical conceptualization (1987) and Mead´s Ideas (1972) revisited by Habermas (1990) had been used as theoretical support. Finally, the subject was seen presenting several personages articulated during his life history. After analysis and data interpretation, couldn´t be possible considered him as a fully emancipated subject, but he presented some fragments of emancipation and demonstrated to be in an interesting process of individuation. It was possible to make critical to the enrollment of handicapped in sport programs, that is, questions about until point these programs contribute or not for the autonomy of subject. This reveals the necessity of quarrels that extend the question in the scope to not only enclose the sportive activity, but, to unite to psychosocial aspects that the phenomenon demands like the Identity as individuation and socialization process at the same time.

The purpose of this project was to design, create, and implement a pilot for an adapted physical education (APE), DVD-Video teaching aid. This creative project has resulted in a DVD-Video that can be used as an instructional tool and resource for physical educators. It follows the teaching methods and skills from the wheelchair basketball chapter in Davis (2002), featuring strategies and ideas that can aid in the successful teaching of physical education (basketball) to individuals of all abilities. The use of interactive DVD-Video in a learning environment is seen as an innovative and exciting delivery method for instructional purposes. It is proposed that the majority of learners would enjoy using, and acquire a very significant learning experience from using, interactive DVD-Video instruction. Therefore, it is anticipated that physical educators would get a meaningful APE training experience from an interactive instructional DVD-Video such as the one piloted for this creative project. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science
