Initial Assessment of the Introduction of Spottail Shiner (Notropis hudsonius) and Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) into Willard Bay Reservoir, Utah.

Sommerfeldt, Thomas E. 01 May 1984 (has links)
Spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius) and delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) were introduced into Willard Reservoir to improve the forage base for walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) and black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus). Spottail shiners were stocked in early spring in 1981, 1982, and 1983. Hauling mortality was generally great and an estimated 34,500 live fish were stocked in the 3-year period. Spottail shiner reproduction occurred each year of stocking. Delta smelt were introduced in 1982 with the stocking of 15,000 adult spawning fish. Stocking survival was estimated at 99%. Freshly spawned eggs were also obtained and placed in a tributary to Willard Reservoir. Shoreline seining produced 29 · young-of-the-year delta smelt during June 1982. Growth of the captured young-of-the-year spottail shiner and delta smelt in Willard Reservoir compared favorably with growth found in their respective native waters. Stomach analysis indicated food habits were similar to those in native waters. Food habit analysis of young-of-the-year walleye, black crappie, spottail shiner, and delta smelt indicated very little overlap of food organisms between the four fish species. Spottail shiners occurred in 3 of 56 walleye stomachs containing food items in 1982 and 3 of 41 stomachs containing food items in 1983. Delta smelt were not found in the 132 walleye stomachs examined. However, six adult delta smelt were angler-caught walleye in April 1983. No found in the stomachs of spottail shiners or delta smelt were found in 79 black crappie stomachs examined in 1982 or 62 stomachs examined in 1983. Low utilization of spottail shiner and delta smelt was attributed to the low relative abundance of the two species in Willard Reservoir.

Sequential Thrusting Beneath the Willard Thrust Fault, Wasatch Mountains, Ogden, Utah

Schirmer, Tad William 01 May 1985 (has links)
The downstructure of viewing geologic maps, balanced and cross sections, and hanging-wall-sequence diagrams are applied to produce the first comprehensive synthesis of the structure below the willard thrust sheet. Development of the duplex beneath the Willard thrust may be explained with a "piggyback" thrust model where younger thrust slices form below and fold an older, overlying thrust sheet. Progressive failure of the footwall ramp of the Willard thrust sheet extended the sole thrust eastward and produced a duplex consisting of thrust slices (horses) which adhered to the overriding thrust sheet where it ramped from a lower sole thrust to an upper decollement horizon. The resulting structural culmination produced a distinct antiform in the Willard thrust sheet. The duplex is here named the Ogden duplex. Frontal folds (formed at ramps perpendicular to transport) and lateral folds (formed at ramps parallel to transport) mark the margin of Individual horses within the duplex. Folded thrusts, thrust-splay relationships, and lateral overlap of horses help determine the sequence of thrusting. The involvement of cratonic foreland basement rocks (Farmington Canyon Complex) in thrust slices within the Ogden duplex is similar to the Moine thrust belt in northern Scotland and pinpoints this area within zone III of Boyer and Elliott's (1982) model of a thrust system dominated by a major thrust sheet. The basement rocks form the core of several horses which moved a minimum of 9.6 km. Total shortening within the Ogden duplex is estimated at 8 to 12 km. The sequence of thrusting is proposed from higher to lower: the willard thrust fault moved first, then the Ogden thrust fault and, finally, the Taylor and Weber thrust system (here named). Striking similarities between the Ogden thrust fault, the Weber-Taylor thrust system, and the Durst thrust fault geometries suggest that they are all part of the same system.

American Scientists, Americanist Archaeology: The Committee on Radioactive Carbon 14

Baich, Keith David 01 January 2010 (has links)
Willard Libby's development of carbon-14 dating at the University of Chicago immediately following World War II provided an unprecedented opportunity for the collaboration of archaeologists with a physical chemist. Libby's need for archaeological samples to test the dating process (1947-1951) meant that he relied upon the Committee on Radioactive Carbon 14, formed by the American Anthropological Association, for datable materials, as well as for assistance in all other archaeologically related aspects of the testing phase. The committee, under the leadership of archaeologist Frederick Johnson, served the mandated function of providing assistance to Libby, but simultaneously endeavored to utilize the new dating method to promote the development of the authority of anthropological professional organizations and further establish Americanist archaeology in a national and global context. Johnson's and the committee's approach to collaboration was informed by an understanding of opportunities provided by the postwar restructuring of the sciences. The purpose of the present study is to provide a history of the Committee on Radioactive Carbon 14 (1948-1952) as well as a to provide the context necessary to describe the bureaucratic and scientific goals of the committee. Frederick Johnson's career, and the manner in which it reflected general trends in twentieth century American anthropology, is discussed in detail, and utilized to present an explanation of his actions as committee chair. Willard Libby's development of carbon-14 dating is also discussed in detail, particularly in regard to his request for assistance from the archaeological community and subsequent collaborative work. The undeniable influence of carbon-14 dating on archaeological practice worldwide, and Libby's acceptance of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1960) for his development of the dating method, has provided reason enough for a plethora of articles and book length studies regarding carbon-14 dating. Yet, little has been written about the Committee on Radioactive Carbon 14 and its place in an analysis of the bureaucratic and collaborative science of the American mid-century. It is for this reason that the present study was undertaken.

Analyses of Sex Ratios among Residents of the Khumbu of Nepal Support the Trivers-Willard Hypothesis

McGinsky, Elizabeth Ann January 2011 (has links)
The Trivers-Willard hypothesis predicts a sex ratio bias contingent on maternal condition in species characterized by variation in male reproductive success. A male-biased sex ratio among mothers in good condition, and a female-biased sex ratio among mothers in poor condition is expected. Studies in humans have thus far provided mixed answers to the question of whether or not sex ratio is affected by maternal condition. The present study assessed whether or not the introduction of a western cash economy influenced the observed secondary sex ratio in Nepal's Khumbu region. Because acculturated villages provided better access to the cash economy and to health facilities, residence in an acculturated village was used as a proxy for "good" maternal condition. I analyzed demographic data gathered by survey in 1971 and 1982. The sample included 734 children from the 1971 survey and 1598 children from the 1982 survey. Using Poisson regression I analyzed the extent to which the sex ratios in age-stratified groups differed between the acculturated and unacculturated villages. In the 1971 dataset, the younger women in the acculturated villages displayed a significantly higher (p=.014) proportion of male offspring. It is likely that older women were subjected to minimal acculturation effects during their child-bearing years and among these data there was a lack of significant deviation between acculturated and unacculturated post-menopausal women. The rapid overall increase in acculturation between 1971 and 1982 likely made conditions in the two sets of villages much more similar by 1982. The results of this study underscore the impact that the transition to a market economy had on women in Nepal's Khumbu region. / Anthropology

Direito e objetividade: a viabilidade do projeto de naturalização do direito por Brian Leiter / Law and Objectivity The viability of the naturalization of jurisprudence by Brian Leiter

Arruda, Thais Nunes de 14 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the viability of the project of naturalization of jurisprudence championed by Brian Leiter. The first chapter presents the effort of philosophy from Descartes foundationalism to Carnap for the solution of skeptical doubt about what is knowledge and that led to what was called physicalism, evidenced in the works of Kelsen and Scandinavian and Americans Legal Realists. The linguistic turn was decisive for the reconstruction of Cartesian parameters, being remarkable the influence of Wittgenstein and Quine. With Quine, the naturalization of epistemology proposal gained momentum and led, however, to abandon the skeptical challenge and scientism. Behaviorism already showed signs in american legal realism and was criticized by H.L.A. Hart. Hart appropriated elements of Quinean naturalism and Wittgenstein, establishing a new objectivity to law. Leiters project, presented in the second chapter, was born of the disagreement with hartian criticism. Two are his goals: (i) redeem American Legal Realism, reconstructing it in the light of pragmatism and Quinean naturalism, supported by antifoundationalism and replacement of normative theories by causal-nomological descriptions of judicial decisions for predictability purposes. The dogma of positivism will establish the criteria of legality, excluding the moral as part of what is legally objective; (ii) adopt an external skeptical position in an attempt to undermine the interpretativismo of Ronald Dworkin. The third chapter discusses the feasibility of Leiters project properly. Leiter cannot show the naturalism in theory of law in its best light, since it is incapable of dealing with normative questions related to law and, therefore, to justify judicial decisions without resorting to a substantive theory, something that Dworkin can make more profit, especially with regard to the issue of objectivity. Leiters project points to a future in which empirical research can increase laws confidence, but its limitation to a theoretical project of causal-nomological description of decisions is not feasible for the purposes proposed by a successful theory of law.

Returning to protoevangelical faith : the theology and praxis of Dr. Dallas Willard

Black, Gary Elbert January 2011 (has links)
This thesis describes the theology and praxis of philosopher/theologian Dr. Dallas Willard and its effect on contemporary forms of evangelicalism in America. Willard’s works have become increasingly attractive to emerging generations of Christians protesting the perceived excesses and hegemony of mainstream evangelical culture. Willard presents a positive alternative to contemporary versions of evangelicalism seen by many as increasingly devoted to soteriological escapism, modern consumerism, individualism and sectarianism. Alternatively, Willard proposes a return to the original (proto) message of good news (evangel) articulated by Jesus in the New Testament. For increasing numbers of disaffected evangelicals with postmodern sensibilities, this protoevangelical vision offers a more robust doctrine of God, a return to the primacy of discipleship to Christ, and the experience of a holistic and integrated life in the Kingdom of God. Ethnographies of four evangelical organizations applying Willardian theology provide insight into the current evolution within American evangelical theology and praxis.
