Rech, Tiago Bassani January 2012 (has links)
This research deals with the analysis of the territorial process which arose from the former African Colony, leading subsequently to the neighborhood of Rio Branco and Mont'Serrat. The origin of the concern was the perception through the data from the census of the Casas de Religião de Matriz Africana de Porto Alegre (2006), (Porto Alegre’s Religion Houses of African descent (2006)) known as terreiros (backyards), which revealed the lack of this type of elucidation in the field of study (Rio Branco). Contradictorily, a century ago, it was the area that, along with other peripheral part of the city, Areal da Baronesa (currently Cidade Baixa), concentrated most terreiros and it was organized through a territorial arrangement, expressed by its territoriality. This phenomenon, in the African Colony, is the object of analysis in this research, perceived through the subsequent processes of occupation in the area, turned into the neighborhood called Rio Branco in 1912, which resulted in the dismantling of that territoriality, installed at the site, to ethnic imprint, and manifested, nowadays, in the terreiros. The scales of approach pervade the role of public authority, embodied by the municipal government, through the decrees and laws that interfered directly in the regulation of space and private power, represented by those with greater purchasing power, which organized the areas in accordance with the creation of urban soil and its consequent evaluation. In this context, over time, segments of the population with lower purchasing power, represented mostly by black people of Porto Alegre, experience the processes of displacement around the city in a continuous process of fragmentation. In the city, these processes occur in different spheres: cultural, economic, political, in an endless tangle, named by Milton Santos, “banal space”.

Cartes, Kimberly, Petchrod, Phatcha January 2020 (has links)
Presently there are extremely high expectations on the railway in Sweden. As a result of the political will to strengthen the railways position in the transport market, a number of major railway projects have therefore been decided. However, the political ambition has also resulted in a greater need of capacity than before. Which has led to an overload of the Swedish railway network and therefore also wear of tracks, locomotives and wagons.Since the railway in comparison with for instance the car not always has been the most popular mode of transportation, then only a small part of the investment has been devoted to developing its system. This has resulted in matters and tasks within the area being greatly put aside. An example of a issue that has not been prioritized concerns guidelines for the shaping and usage of the walking ways on railway yards. At present, there are no guidelines for how these walking ways should look and be used, which has resulted in a number of injuries and accidents occurring among the workers. The purpose of this work is therefore to present new suggestions for the design and use of these walking ways. The goal has been to develop an overall assessment of the situation based on a visit to the railway yard in Hagalund, interviews with experts and an information gathering within the topic. This is intended to form the basis for the suggestions and in the future also for a safer environment for the workers.During the site visit to the depot in Hagalund, it was discovered that some of the walking ways in the yard were in need of maintenance. It turned out that they were not being filled up, because the stone fractions are considered to contaminate the macadam laying next to it. During the site visit, one saw how some of the streets disappeared among larger fractions and that there was macadam Class I on the yard, although it is not allowed to be there. With the help of the interviews, one could map out the reason why it looks like it does today at the depot in Hagalund. In the discussions with the various characters, there was clearly a need to renew and standardize the guidelines for how these walking ways should be built and maintained. With the help of the site visit and the interviews, our proposals for guidelines were developed. One proposal is at least a width of 0.7 m along streets intended for walking along existing tracks and 0.7-1 m along future ones.

The frustration/satisfaction level in relation to needs of non-commissioned officers' wives at a naval base

Pearce, Tracey-Lynn January 1995 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the life satisfaction of the wives of naval non-commissioned officers living in an isolated military suburb. As little is known about this phenomenon an exploratory design was used. A sample group of 81 wives was selected by means of stratified random sampling. Measuring instruments used were the Heimler Scale of Social Functioning and a needs assessment. The results of the study indicated that although a small majority of the wives experience their lives as satisfactory they have a great deal of frustration. The two largest areas of low satisfaction was work and finances. It seems that these wives have sufficient support systems. The lack of transport seems to be a problem for these wives. The needs assessment identified a great interest in, and a need for certain courses, hobbies, aerobic classes and a daycare centre. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science (Mental Health))

Carvalho, Luiza Fabiana Neitzke de January 2015 (has links)
The research entitled History and Funerary Art of São José I and II Cemeteries in Porto Alegre (1888-2014) examines the cultural changes in dealing with death and burial, as well as the impact of these changes for the preservation of graveyard art. We present the reader with a history of the major cemeteries in Porto Alegre, focusing on Cemeteries São José I and II, owned by the Community of Catholic Germans of São José. Since 2000, Cemeteries São José I and II suffer the gradual subtraction of their funerary monuments due to construction of an annex parking at a crematorium. The study also addresses the work of marble yards which built the tombs of Cemeteries São José I and II, especially the marble yard Casa Aloys (1894-1961). Besides the tomb inventory, we conducted a survey of those buried in the Cemeteries São José, finding several important names linked to artistic and cultural activities in Rio Grande do Sul, such as painters Pedro Weingärtner and Jose Lutzenberger. We also propose an itinerary for a guided tour to present to the society these and other illustrious dead buried in Cemeteries São José I and II.

How the Pacific Northwest Could Be Won – Overcoming Barriers to Growing Food in Yards

McNerney, Tara, Dankers, Maarten, Callahan, Luke January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores how to overcome barriers to growing food in yards in cities of North America’s Pacific Northwest Coastal Region, to help build towards a more sustainable society. We used a survey and interviews to investigate what barriers prevent people with access to yards from growing food, or prevent them from increasing the amount of food grown in their yards, and how these barriers can be overcome. We also collected data to determine the resource inputs and production and/or financial outputs for three groups of people involved with growing food in yards: Do-it-yourself gardeners, Consultants involved with designing and implementing food gardens, and Commercial Urban Farmers. This allowed us to gain a better understanding of the current reality and identify what role these groups can play in helping to overcome the barriers. Based on our results, we made a list of recommended actions that are tangible, move in the right direction towards sustainability, can act as stepping stones for future improvements, and could provide a positive return on investment, in order to help individuals with access to yards who are interested in growing food overcome the barriers facing them.

From Castle to Cottage : A Study of the History of Swedish Bricks

Johansson, Frida January 2017 (has links)
The complete history of Swedish bricks has not yet been fully compiled. This paper is written with the intention to assemble the historic puzzle which can tell the story of how bricks have been used, who has used them and how their appearance has changed over the course of time. To do this, extensive literature studies have been made, with sources stretching over a period of 2000 years. Bits of each source have been taken to create a chronological picture of its history. The results showed that catholic monks took the knowledge of brick working to Sweden in the 12th century. Soon, the royal power and the church started using brick as well. Despite this, bricks did not get its biggest breakthrough until the 18th century, when a new church law made children learn how to read. Instruction books got released and were read by a fairly large portion of the Swedish population. In the 1870s, the brickyard industry got mechanized, which made the branch sensitive to changes in the country’s economy. From this, the conclusion is drawn that literacy rate and industrial revolution led to the two biggest blooms in the history of bricks. Ironically, the industrial revolution also lead to the descent of the brick industry, partly because of the economic sensitivity, partly because the concrete was allowed to take over.
