La Fièvre Jaune: An Exhibition Plan on St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Irish Immigrants, and the Role of the Catholic Church During the 1853 Yellow Fever Epidemic in New Orleans

The proposed public history project, La Fièvre Jaune, will be one component of a larger exhibit sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Office of Archives and Records entitled Song of Farewell: Catholic Cemeteries of New Orleans, focusing on New Orleans’s historic Catholic cemeteries, funeral chapels, relics, and burial rights. Using cemetery and death records, La Fièvre Jaune documents many of the Catholic, largely Irish immigrants struck by yellow fever in 1853 and the role of St. Patrick’s cemetery as the burial site for this population. The epidemic took the lives of some 8,000 people. This project will provide insight into the ways that the Catholic Church in New Orleans responded to the 1853 yellow fever epidemic using photographs, official correspondence, as well as cemetery and death records. The entire exhibit will be housed at the Old Ursuline Convent Museum in the French Quarter.

Trophic ecology and habitat occupancy of yellow perch in nearshore Lake Michigan and Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron

Elucidation of habitat and resource use patterns is important for facilitating sustainable management of fisheries. Discrete habitats in large aquatic ecosystems may offer distinct resources and differentially affect performance. Movement of organisms and organic materials links these habitats and potentially leads to spatially complex trophic pathways between basal resources and consumers. Habitat and resource use are commonly explored via two common methods: stable isotopes and morphometric analysis. The first research chapter of this thesis employed both methods to investigate seasonal habitat use of yellow perch <i>Perca flavescens</i>in eastern Lake Michigan and connected waterbodies known as drowned river mouth (DRM) lakes. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics was used to compare shape differences among habitats. Stable isotopes of ambient water, otoliths, and soft tissues were compared to differentiate among habitats. Both methods provided evidence of resident nearshore Lake Michigan fish, resident DRM lake fish occupying the littoral zone, and transient Lake Michigan fish occupying the profundal zone of DRM lakes. The majority of transient Lake Michigan fish moved into the profundal zone of DRM lakes in the fall. These results support previously published genetic data of distinct populations of yellow perch in eastern Lake Michigan and connected waterbodies. The second research chapter of this thesis also employed stable isotopes and morphometric analysis, but to investigate the consistency of resource use of age-0 yellow perch in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. These methods served as long-term diet indicators, as compared to short-term stomach contents analysis. Both stable isotopes of soft tissues and morphometric analysis showed spatial consistency in variation among sites. Fish from the two sites closer to the tributary input had higher δ<sup>15</sup>N values and more fusiform bodies, while fish from the third site further away from the tributary had lower δ<sup>15</sup>N values and were deeper-bodied. This spatial variation supports stomach content analysis of age-0 yellow perch from a previously published study. δ<sup>13</sup>C ratios displayed annual variation, and while inconsistent with stomach content analysis, was consistent with available prey items. The findings from this study suggest that young yellow perch in Saginaw Bay have limited movement and forage in a similar area to where they were collected. Previous studies have found discrepancies among indicators and have cautioned generalization of trophic relationships when only relying on a single metric. Agreement between complementary techniques provided additional support to previously-published genetic results and stomach content data, and thereby helped more fully describe habitat use by yellow perch in these systems.

Según Alcatara y Quispe (2017), “La producción nacional de maíz tiene ciertas vulnerabilidades para abastecer la demanda nacional, como consecuencia de esto menciona una tendencia positiva en las importaciones peruanas de maíz”. La tendencia de importación de MAD (Maíz amarillo duro) es elevada debido a que existe una fuerte demanda por parte del sector avícola y porcino, quienes usan este grano como insumo para la producción de carne de ave y puerco. A su vez el consumo nacional de carne de ave y porcina aumentan año a año (Posada,2018). Por los dos hechos anteriores se puede inferir una situación de dependencia a las importaciones de maíz amarillo duro y por ende se vuelve relevante estudiar los factores que afectan a la misma. Se formuló la siguiente hipótesis: “Los factores que determinaron las importaciones peruanas de maíz amarillo duro (1005.90.11.00) entre los años 2005- 2018 fueron la producción de carne de ave, el costo de los fletes, la importación peruana de MAD las barreras arancelarias. Para comprobarla se recurrió a un método de investigación científica, tomando como datos: carne ave, flete e importaciones de maíz. A continuación, analizaremos las características de cada uno de los determinantes que influyen en la importación de dicho grano, y se realizarán las pruebas necesarias para determinar las variables que involucra, con la finalidad de entender el desempeño de la importación y su incremento porcentual anual. / According to Alcatara and Quispe (2017), "The national production of corn has certain vulnerabilities to supply the national demand, as a consequence of this it mentions a positive trend in Peruvian corn imports." Due to the two previous facts, a situation of dependence on hard yellow corn imports can be inferred and therefore it becomes relevant to study the factors that affect it. The following hypothesis was formulated: “The factors that determined Peruvian imports of hard yellow corn (1005.90.11.00) between 2005-2018 were the production of poultry, the cost of freight, the Peruvian import of MAD barriers Tariffs To verify it, a scientific research method was used, taking as data: poultry, freight and corn imports. Next, we will analyze the characteristics of each of the determinants that influence the import of said grain, and the necessary tests will be carried out to determine the variables involved, in order to understand the import performance and its annual percentage increase. / Tesis

Aspects of the ecology and biology of the Lowveld largescale yellowfish (Labeobarbus marequensis, Smith, 1843) in the Luvuvhu River, Limpopo River System, South Africa

(Zoology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2009. / Aspects of the ecology and biology of the Lowveld largescale yellowfish (Labeobarbus marequensis) were studied in the Luvuvhu River over a period of three years. In this study the origin of the species, its phylogenetic relation to the other South African yellowfish species, its distribution and gross morphology are discussed and the lack of knowledge regarding aspects of the species is pointed out. The study area is identified and its geology, hydrology, climate and water quality as well as the historic distribution of the species is discussed. Adapted “truss” techniques were applied to measure and calculate the morphometric features related to feeding and habitat preference of the species. From this data the habitat preferences and requirements were inferred after which it was compared to data obtained during field surveys. The study of the breeding biology and ecology of the species included investigations of gonad and egg structure and development as well as seasonal surveys of selected breeding sites. The diet of the species was established through stomach content analyses and related to the digestive tract morphology. Data obtained from the Xikundu fishway was used to establish the migratory behaviour. Results show that nine distinct stanzas or growth phases, each with its own morphometric characteristics, were identified. The body form, and some morphological aspects, of the species make it suitable to cope with flowing water. Ontogenetic changes in body form and the identified morphological aspects were observed and related to the habitat preferences of the stanzas. A distinct ontogenetic shift in preferred habitat was illustrated. The species was shown to be fractional spawner with two spawning events per annum. A major extended spawning event occurred during spring or early summer and coincided with a temperature increase and in particular with an increase in flow. Breeding occurred at sites with fast flowing water over cobble or boulder beds and it was observed that the presence of nursery areas related to breeding biotopes was extremely important. Although the diet of the species was dominated by plant and algal matter, juvenile stanzas ingested large amounts of animal material. It was found that the spatial movements of the species could be characterised as migrations and that breeding and dispersal migrations occurred.

Feasibility and Emissions of Compression Ignition Engines Fueled with Waste Vegetable Oil

Research and experience has shown that vegetable oil can be processed, by transesterification, into a useable fuel for compression ignition engines. Earlier research examined using straight vegetable oil as a fuel, but found it to cause detrimental engine problems. Trial and error has shown that heating the vegetable oil prior to injection, is a viable option. A diesel vehicle engine was operated for over 188 hours or approximately 7,000 miles, using waste cooking oil as fuel. The longevity of the vehicle engine was limited by an undetermined engine failure. Using stationary testing, with no engine load and various power settings, engine emissions of several engines operating on waste cooking oil were compared to emissions from two other fuels, diesel and Biodiesel, and found to be very positive. Waste vegetable oil (WVO) had lower overall emissions than diesel and lower levels of nitrogen species than Biodiesel. Agricultural yield predictions estimate that currently only 5% and at most 20% of all diesel fuel needs can be met with vegetable oil. Currently WVO is a disposal problem. It is primarily used as a feedstock. WVO is not a commodity and has disposal fees associated with it. If WVO is used as a fuel, it would not only provide another source for disposal, but it may also increase the value of WVO making it a commodity instead of a disposal burden.

Population modelling the yellow-footed rock-wallaby (petrogale xanthopus xanthopus) in space and time

Conservation biology is primarily concerned with the amelioration of species decline. The Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby (Petrogale xanthopus xanthopus) is a medium-sized Macropod that inhabits the semiarid rangelands of South Australia and New South Wales. Its conservation status is Vulnerable C2a(i). In this study, population modelling, spatially explicit habitat modelling and Population Viability Analysis (PVA) have been used to better understand the factors that affect the abundance and distribution of the P. x. xanthopus in South Australia. The processes that drive the population dynamics of a species operate at different scales. As such this research involves a collection of several inter-related and scale-specific empirical studies that provide insights about the population dynamics of P. x. xanthopus. Each of these studies captures environmental, demographic and behavioural process acting on the population at different scales. These include the analysis of relative abundance data derived from an aerial census, mark recapture sampling of demographic parameters in relation to rainfall patterns and a collection of habitat models derived at different scales using presence-absence data. Spatially explicit PVAs enable the population dynamics of a species to be modelled in space and time. Using these data, a PVA is conducted to explore and rank the importance of the factors that threaten this species and help guide their future monitoring and management. Movement is also a key issue when considering problems such as isolation and inbreeding. Given that little is known about the dispersal behaviour of this species, a range of different dispersal behaviours are also simulated in the PVA using random and non-random mating algorithms, to estimate the potential for inbreeding. / thesis (PhD)--University of South Australia, 2004.

Focusing on "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and The Singing Detective (1986) by Dennis Potter in dialogue with theories from Freud, Szasz, Foucault and Butler, my thesis considers the role of medicine in encouraging a patient toward a normative subjectivity. The protagonists of each text have become ill as a result of their inability to accept the social contradictions and lies upon which gendered subjectivity is reliant; the unnamed narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" comprehends femininity as servitude to male demands, while Marlow of The Singing Detective desires the power patriarchy offers him as a male, but his loss of belief and faith prevent his ascension to masculine status.Both the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Marlow resist the imposition of normative gender by practitioners of mainstream medicine. Therefore, a more complex and subtle method of treatment, the psychoanalysis developed by Freud, is employed in The Singing Detective, thereby encouraging the patient to identify illness and discontent as personal, not societal, responsibility.I commence the thesis with an overview of the unequal power relations presupposed and encouraged by medical discourse. Through a process of 'hystericisation' the patient is infantilised and made dependent upon medical care. Linguistic control is central to manipulating patient behaviour within the hospital, and correspondingly the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Marlow both seek a new subjectivity through their writing. Difficulties in appropriating language leads to internal incoherency for the protagonists, met by a split subjectivity - a defence mechanism which allows the protagonists to deviate from, at the same time as preserving, their 'good self'.The refusal of "The Yellow Wallpaper's" narrator to relinquish her defiant self and assume femininity is contained by patriarchy - embodied by her husband, John - as insanity. The strict limitation upon a nineteenth-century woman's expression prevents her from positively escaping her physician/husband's script leading to her mental demise. By contrast, Marlow successfully resocialises himself by modifying the hypermasculine persona he idealises, and is finally situated to confront and reform the social contradictions that precipitated his ill-health. However, subdued by having been led to identify discontent as a personal problem, Marlow is unlikely to challenge the power relations which have made his subjectivity possible. His capitulation to normalisation demonstrates a fundamental point linking the otherwise divergent theories of Freud and Foucault, that the creation of agency first requires the subject's subordination.

The influence of exotic shrubs on birds or urban yellow box-blakly's red gum (E. melliodora-E. blakelyi) woodland in Canberra

This study considered the influence of exotic shrubs on birds in urban patches of Yellow Box- Blakely's Red Gum (E. melliodora-E. blakelyi) woodlands in the Australian Capital Territory, Canberra. The aim of this research was to identify native and exotic birds that have their abundance influenced by exotic shrubs. The purpose of this work was to provide more information to managers of this woodland about the potential impacts of weed control on birds living in woodland reserves adjacent to suburban areas. Birds were sampled between 1996 and 1998 using the twenty minute area-search method to derive estimates of bird abundance. Around 680 twenty minute area-searches were completed, with 665 of these undertaken at 12 two hectare plots with varying levels of exotic shrub cover over a period of ten months. The abundance of birds for each of the ten months sampled were compared by pooling sites into four classes of exotic shrub cover. Classes of exotic shrub cover were nil, light, moderate and dense. Seasonal inferences were drawn from non-parametric analysis of variance. Non-parametric measures of association were used to test for correlation between the mean abundance of bird species at different woodland sites and percentage foliage estimates of exotic shrub cover. Percentage foliage estimates of native shrub cover were included in tests for correlation between bird abundance and exotic shrub cover by applying partial measures of association. To support statistical information, observations of birds in exotic shrub cover were also recorded. In one woodland site birds were sampled before and after the removal of exotic shrub cover. No statistical tests were applied to these samples because of a lack of replication; however, descriptive graphs of the abundance of selected birds following weed control are presented. To investigate the effect that exotic shrub invasion may have on the composition of bird assemblages in woodland cluster analysis and ordination of the 12 sites using the mean abundance of the 75 species recorded between July 1997 and June 1998 were also undertaken. The presence of exotic shrub cover in E. melliodora-E. blakelyi woodland in Canberra was found to have differential effects on bird abundance. Wrens, finches, thornbills, whistlers and pigeons were more abundant in woodland sites where exotic shrubs were present when compared to sites with no or little exotic shrub cover. Fruit-eating birds, such as Silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis), Pied Currawong (Strepera graculina) and Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans), were more abundant in woodland with exotic shrubs in winter and autumn when these shrubs provided food in the form of berries. The abundance of fruit-eating birds, and wrens and finches was reduced in a single woodland site following the removal of most of the exotic shrub cover. The Common Blackbird (Turdus merula) was the only exotic bird which showed a strong association with exotic shrubs in woodland, while the Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) was negatively correlated with exotic shrub cover, possibly because prey is harder to detect and capture in woodland with a shrubby understorey. Cluster analysis and ordination of the 12 woodland sites did not group sites into the four experimental classes used to undertake analysis of variance. Multivariate analysis, however, did reveal that seasonal peaks in the abundance of fruit eating birds affected the composition of bird assemblages by increasing the mean abundance of these birds in densely invaded sites. Similarly, structural differences in the understorey resulted in some birds being more abundant in woodland sites invaded by exotic shrubs when compared to sites lacking a shrubby understorey. The distance between some sites confirmed this stark difference in bird life when plotted in three dimensions. The results of this study suggest that exotic shrubs add food and structural complexity to woodland habitat. Benefits of structural complexity for small native birds in woodland include nest sites and protection from predators. These benefits may operate at certain thresholds of invasion, as the woodland site with the densest level of exotic shrub invasion showed a slight decrease in the number of wrens and finches. Adverse impacts from exotic shrub invasion may include reduced open ground in which to forage and loss of floristic diversity in the understorey. In effect, exotic shrubs add and remove resources in woodland habitat, benefiting some bird species and limiting others. These findings suggest that the removal of exotic shrub cover in woodland located in urban landscapes simplifies the structural complexity of the understorey, reducing the quality of habitat for some birds. Thus, adverse impacts on biodiversity arising from the invasion of exotic shrubs in woodland need to be considered against the important role that a diverse bird population has in maintaining ecosystem function.

The Relationships Between the Ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks on the Border Zone in the Ferghana Valley During the Transition

This thesis is a study of interethnic relationships between the ethnic Uzbek and Kyrgyz on the eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley, the cross-border zone between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, from independence to 2005. It argues that strong ethnic tension between the ethnic Uzbek and Kyrgyz was present during 'the Yellow Revolution' and the Andijan massacre in that year. The economically dominant ethnic Uzbeks in southern Kyrgyzstan played a role in initiating the opposition due to ongoing political marginalization by the government, while the opposition appealed to Kyrgyz ethno-nationalism and failed to draw wider political support from the Uzbeks or other minorities. As a result, there the ethnic minorities' lines were divided into pro-Akaev and pro-Revolution group. In the case of the Andijan massacre, the Uzbek government, after the arrival of the Uzbek asylum seekers into Kyrgyzstan territory on the eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley, had stirred latent fears amongst local Kyrgyz through their propaganda broadcasting. The economically marginalized ethnic Kyrgyz on the Kyrgyzstan side of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border on the eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley had subsequently turned against the refugees and the tension was not alleviated until the refugees were moved to Romania by UNHCR. Both cases exhibit that the ethnic tension between these titular ethnic groups has deeper roots, which could be taken back to the pre-1991 Soviet era. A range of dynamics affect interethnic relations: (1) the potential for harmonious relations between the ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz has been reduced by the rise of 'pure Uzbek' and 'pure Kyrgyz' ethnic-nationalism among these two ethnic communities in their newly created states; (2) a new economic aspect of the ethnic tension has arisen since 1991 in both eastern Uzbekistan and southern Kyrgyzstan as a result of the ethnic Uzbeks dominating the local economy in southern Kyrgyzstan; and (3) clan networks have strongly influenced the flow of post-independence politics. The revival of Islam and fundamentalist and radical ideologies, before and after independence had added complexity to the ethnic Uzbek and Kyrgyz relationships in the Ferghana Valley. Initially democratic nationalists and Islamic nationalists shared some goals, but this commonality faded as Islamic groups became to be seen as a critic and a threat to the Uzbek government and were subsequently banned. The ethnic Uzbeks express more religiosity than the ethnic Kyrgyz, while the majority of the supporters of Islamic fundamentalism and radicalism are the Uzbeks and a smaller number of ethnic Kyrgyz supporters. The failure of post-independence economic transitions of both countries have deepened rural poverty in eastern Uzbekistan and southern Kyrgyzstan, and gradually created collective poverty on the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border zone on the eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley. The ethnic Kyrgyz have been victimized by the deepening rural poverty on both sides of the border. As a result, creation of 'poorer Kyrgyz' vs. 'richer Uzbeks' dynamic has sharpened the conflict between these two ethnicities.
