A Comparison of Righteous Justice within The Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan) and The Legends of Robin Hood

This thesis uses the concept of righteous justice found within The Water Margin and the legends of Robin Hood to analyze conflicts of differing ideologies of justice and morality between the ruling class and that of the common people. From these conflicts this thesis further expounds the idea of righteous justice on three points: 1) Examines political themes and portrayals of righteous justice within the content of The Water Margin and the legends of Robin Hood; 2) Performs a character analysis on how characters identify with the authority systems of both natural law and king¡¦s law based upon the western and Chinese ideals of righteous and public justice; 3) Uses the Marxist theory of history to discuss the formation of ideologies of the common people and how they identify with the concept of righteous justice. Further, this thesis examines the way in which the heroes of Mt. Liang and those of Greenwood forest are viewed by the different classes, and from this examination the manner in which the phenomenon of righteous justice becomes viewed as a legitimate form of justice representing the common people. From these points, this thesis discusses the ways in which righteous justice found among both western and Chinese legends creates moral exceptions within a society.

Clothing, Food and Travel: Ming Material Culture as Reflected in Xingshi Yinyuan Zhuan

Xingshi Yinyuan Zhuan 醒世姻缘传 (The Story of a Marital Fate to Awaken the World) is a 100-chapter, 100,000-character Chinese magnum opus written under the pseudonymous aegis of the seventeenth-century writer Xizhou Sheng 西周生. The novel primarily concerns itself with a curious reversal of power dynamics and relations in the institution of marriage, namely henpecking. To do so, the novel weaves into its narrative, both in the personalities and the events it illustrates, great details of Ming material life. It is through this literary snapshot of material culture that this dissertation is able to investigate the practices and custom of clothing, food and travel, three of the "four major concerns of the people's livelihood", known as yishizhuxing 衣食住行 in Chinese. The project, while frequenting economic dimensions and probing the impact that Ming politics had on the ethos and social economy of the period, sheds significant, if not equal, light on folk custom, legal and religious practices and women's status, among other issues. Although this dissertation allocates one chapter to the surveying of Ming sumptuary laws and ethos as evidenced by the "guxiu incident," the struggle between the forces of conservative social hierarchy and the growing market as a feature of Ming material life is a question that runs throughout the entire composition.

Cette thèse, qui relève de la didactique du français langue étrangère, traite des conventions d’écriture académique en français et en chinois dans une perspective de rhétorique contrastive. Nous étudions deux genres académiques propres à l’enseignement supérieur en France et en Chine : la dissertation et le yilun wen, respectivement. Les deux exercices détiennent un statut comparable ; ils obéissent tous deux à un système de normes relativement stables, à une structure clairement fixée et font figure d’ « exercice-roi » dans chacune des deux cultures éducatives. La comparaison entre ces deux genres scolaires et universitaires nous permet d’analyser les difficultés rencontrées par un groupe d’étudiants chinois en FLE dans la rédaction d’une dissertation et les transferts qu’ils opèrent en français des conventions d’écriture issues du yilun wen. Cette analyse est éclairée par celle des annotations marginales portées sur leurs copies de dissertation par des correcteurs français. A travers les résultats d’une enquête menée par questionnaire auprès de groupes d’étudiants (chinois et français), la thèse s’attache ensuite aux représentations très disparates que les deux ensembles de groupes se font de la signification de ces normes du point culturel et cognitif.La thèse s’attache enfin à décrire la rhétorique traditionnelle chinoise à travers l’analyse du bagu wen et du schéma Qi-Cheng-Zhuan-He, un dispositif traditionnel toujours proposé dans les manuels et pratiqué par les étudiants. / This study compares academic writing conventions in French and Chinese from the point of view of Contrastive Rhetoric in the field of French teaching and learning as a foreign language. We spot respectively in French and Chinese education systems a specific genre: the French dissertation and the Chinese yilun wen. They have a comparable status, a clear structure and strict rules to follow. The comparison between these two genres indicates that the rules are not shared between French and Chinese students and that certain criteria required in the Chinese yilun wen appear far removed from French dissertation. Thus Chinese students encounter intricate difficulties in writing French dissertations and negative transfers under the influence from Chinese writing conventions. This result is also confirmed by the analysis of dissertations written by the Chinese students of our corpus. The surveys conducted among French and Chinese learners show that they are not fully aware of the cultural differences of standards in writing. The analysis of comments by French teachers of dissertation written by Chinese students shows that they are not better armed than their students in face of the differences of textual organization (both the construction and the way of realization) in French and Chinese. We attend to hold endly how the organization of traditional Chinese Rhetoric (the bagu wen and the Qi-Cheng-Zhuan-He schemes), still proposed by textbooks and practiced by learners, exert more or less influence on French writing of the Chinese students.

Jan Komárek Abstract This thesis is a comparison of two literary works: on the one hand, nearly forgotten anonymous novel Jin, Yun Qiao Story (金雲翹傳), which was written in China at the turn of XVII and XVIII century, and, on the other hand, of a famous novel in verse called The Tale of Kiều (Truyện Kiều), composed a century later by a Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Du on the basis of the aforenamed work. The primary aim of this thesis is to point to the literary elements by means of which Nguyễn Du enriched his work in comparison to the original, and thus offer an explanation of why each of these works met such a different fate. For illustration, translations of the first chapter of the Chinese novel and of a corresponding part of the Vietnamese poem are presented. The two works are then set in the literary context of their time and Nguyễn Du's relationship to the Chinese novel is assessed on the basis of his other works and related contemporary sources. Subsequently, there is a brief outline of history of the comparison between the two works by Vietnamese and by some foreign scholars. Finally, both texts are subjected to a comparison by means of statistics, examples and references to the translated excerpts presented at the beginning of the thesis. Commentated Into His Own Image: Jin Shengtan and His Commentary Edition of the Shuihu Zhuan

This thesis examines three aspects of the commentary edition of the Chinese vernacular novel Shuihu Zhuan written by Ming Dynasty literatus Jin Shengtan (ca. 1610-1661), analyzing three of the most innovative features that the commentary brings to our understanding of the novel, and what Jin Shengtan desired for the reader of his commentary to understand. The first chapter looks at a series of techniques that Jin outlines in the preliminary "How to Read" section of the commentary (dufa), where the techniques are shown to be very similar in focus and style to the literary theory of narratology as written about by Gerard Genette through a sample comparison of five of the techniques with varying characteristics of narratology. The second chapter looks at how Jin Shengtan constructs the image of the author, Shi Nai'an, through both his interlineal commentary (jiapi) and his preliminary chapter commentary (zongpi). We see through this analysis that Jin Shengtan has gone against the tradition of shu er bu zuo -- a Confucian tradition that relegates the position of the author to the background of his work -- and has brought the author into a position of prominence through his construction of the image of an unparalleled genius. The third and final chapter looks at the idea of "heroism" (xia) and how Jin's commentary reworks the way many of the primary characters of the novel and their heroic actions are seen and interpreted, focusing especially on the characters of Wu Song, Lu Zhishen, Song Jiang and Li Kui, where we see that Jin's commentary focuses on parallels between the heroes such as Wu Song and Lu Zhishen in the first portion of the novel, while switching to a more juxtapositional perspective in the latter half of the novel through Song Jiang and Li Kui. / Graduate / 0305 / 0332 / mblsm00@gmail.com

本文共分為九章,三十節。首先點出《東坡易傳》的哲學義理概要及其研究價值,由當時時代背景探究《東坡易傳》興起之源由,進而討論時代背景,瞭解其政治因素對學術思想的影響,從三蘇的思想流變到洛蜀黨爭等。 本論文涉及面向包括《東坡易傳》的架構及其內涵、特色,分析蘇軾在《東坡易傳》對〈序卦〉的強調以及對〈雜卦〉的修訂,在《東坡易傳》的思想內涵,討論其儒、道、佛貫穿其中之思想特色,並做一綜述性的小結。而後針對《東坡易傳》卦爻的解釋方法闡述。在五、六、七章分別討論探討《東坡易傳》的宇宙觀、價值觀以及美學三大方面,可以說這三大方面為哲學探討的核心問題,所在這三個章節裡面,分別以宇宙觀、價值觀及美學為主軸,探討幾個重要的觀念。宇宙觀的部分包括其形上思想及「道」,分別論述幾個形上概念在卦爻中出現的情況以及其義理的分析。第六章的價值論即是指中國人所注重的傳統人倫,包括人生哲學、社群生活、家庭、社會、國家等等,本章亦是提出幾個概念作為一主軸思考深入探析,從其心性問題進而討論宋儒注重的性命問題。在價值觀的部分首先會說明宋以前的心性說,然後由蘇軾對前代學者的批評發現其中心思想,批評之後在進而說明《東坡易傳》對「性」論觀點,在美學的部分,第七章乃由《東坡易傳》發現蘇軾這樣一個文學氣質蓋天下的大家,敢批評吳道子,善為文人畫、書法自成一格,為北宋四大家之一,知音律、曉醫藥,堪稱吾所不學無所不能無所不見,對美學思想的把握及闡發。此三個章節的預期效果是希望由宇宙觀、價值觀到美學之間的環節,探討《東坡易傳》對生活世界、對天下萬物的一種生生不息的態度。 最後以時代點來作為一檢視標準,將蘇軾的觀點與宋代的同時代的學者比較,例如程頤以及南宋的朱熹,並由其中分歧之處作交互評論,藉以發揮了解其不同的涵義。本論文展望性之角度重新審視《東坡易傳》,一方面探究《東坡易傳》思想的內在困難與種種問題、一方面總結《東坡易傳》的特色與影響,另一方面討論的是《東坡易傳》之發展及其後世價值。
