On the 1st of July 2022 the curriculum for upper secondary school will change. One of the primary changestouches upon the Swedish school’s equality mission, which from this autumn shall saturate all education. Withthis in mind it becomes interesting to investigate how and if the formulations regarding equality in the curriculafor 1970, 1994 and 2011 have been reflected on to the following textbooks, Samhälle NU del 1,Samhällskunskap Kompakt and Arena123. The study is historically comparative whereas it also answers thequestions of how the reflections have looked over time as well as how the view of equality has changed. This study has been carried through with a qualitative content analysis, where coding has been used method toanswer the questions. The codes were formulated from Yvonne Hirdman’s theory on the gender system, GertBiesta’s theory on educational functions and the Swedish school’s equality mission, and were used in theanalysis. The results show that the reflections have been more or less prominent within the textbooks. Furthermore, itshows that the reflection has gotten more prominent by the years, presumably due to developments withingender equality or due to the expiration of the public review of textbooks.. Lastly, the view of equality haschanged in the curricula and textbooks, following social development and the upsurge of feminism.
