Media Creation and the Net Generation: Comparing Faculty and Student Beliefs and Competencies Regarding Media Literacy within Higher Education

Schmidt, Hans January 2010 (has links)
This document presents a dissertation research project that involved studying: (1) faculty perceptions and student media creation competencies, (2) faculty and student perceptions of the extent to which media creation competencies are addressed within higher education, and (3) faculty and student perceptions of the importance of addressing media creation competencies within higher education. While the perception exists that today's college students are digital natives, comfortable with all forms of new media and digital technology, previous research suggests that there may be limits to the media savvy of today's college students. This study considers the extent to which students possess competencies related to one dimension of media literacy, namely, media creation. Additionally, this study considers similarities and differences that exist between faculty perceptions and student competencies and perceptions. By using faculty interviews (N=16) and a student questionnaire (N=409), data were gathered at a four-year university in Pennsylvania. Data suggest that students infrequently engage in media creation activities and perceive that they learn very little about media creation in college classes, yet feel that it is important to learn about media creation. Similarly, faculty members perceive that students rarely engage in media creation activities and lack media creation competencies. Further, faculty members perceive that they rarely include course content related to media creation in their classes, yet feel that it is important for college students to learn about media creation. Accordingly, this research suggests that, despite the perception that today's college students are digital natives, individuals of this generation typically lack the media creation competencies that are an important dimension of overall media literacy. Additionally, data suggest that, despite the perception that students should be learning about media creation, they currently rarely learn about this aspect of media literacy at the college level. / Mass Media and Communication

Taljaard, Dirk Cornelis 12 1900 (has links)
Praise and worship, central to every church service, as a grateful response to God's goodness and mercy, is frequently met with scepticism within the Reformed tradition. This is, partly, due to different definitions, resulting in a variety of subjective interpretations. It deprives the faith community of the joy and warmth expected to be experienced at gatherings. It furthermore results in youth having to seek alternative pastures for their specific needs. This research focuses on the Scriptural and theological foundation of praise and worship, as well as the needs of the youth, relevant trends influencing their needs, their preferences and dislikes as well as their attitude towards life in general. Aspects such as culture and the so called Generational theories and types of spirituality will come under scrutiny. Lastly recommendations are made for planning and presentation of Scriptural sound praise and worship, whilst, at the same time, empowering them to take joint responsibility. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Changing Consumption Behavior of Net Generation and the Adoption of Streaming Music Services : Extending the Technology Acceptance Model to Account for Streaming Music Services

Delikan, Mehmet Deniz January 2010 (has links)
The rise of the streaming music services and the decreasing importance of physical distribution is an inevitable change that the industry has been facing, which is resulting from the so-called internet revolution over the past few years. Through years, the music business has already shifted to online platform with the birth of file sharing. Today, a generation who had grown up digital came to age. Members of this generation have different consumption habits than before, and have different motives toward consumption. The consumer behavior of this group was examined at different stages of the digital revolution during last decade. However, although there is a wide number of researches have examined online consumer behavior and the adoption file-sharing technologies, no study investigated the use of streaming music services. Therefore, in order to understand the changing consumption behavior of the net generation music consumers, and to under-stand the use of streaming music services, this study extends the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to account the streaming music services. A questionnaire based empirical study was administrated among the users of Sweden based streaming music service Spotify. Results confirm that there is a significant relationship between users‟ perceived usefulness of service use, and their attitude toward using and their behavioral intention to use. In addition, it is also confirmed by the results that advertisement/charge, flow, and social influence are effective in explaining the motives of users‟, and the use of streaming music services. Furthermore, according to the findings of the study streaming music services have a positive effect on decreasing the music piracy.

Zimic, Sheila January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to gain a deeper understanding in relation to the construction of a ‘Net Generation’. With regards to the idea of an information society, technologies and young people are given certain positions, which are not in any sense natural but are socially constructed. This thesis explores these socially given meanings and shows what types of meanings are prioritized and legitimized. The exploration is conducted by examining, both externally and internally, given meanings of a generation identity. The external (nominal identification) in this study is understood as the construction of an abstract user and is studied by means of academic texts concerning the ‘Net Generation’. The internal (virtual identification) involves young people’s construction of their generation identity and is studied by means of collage. The collages are used to understand how the young participants position themselves in contemporary society and how they, as concrete users, articulate their relationship with information technologies.   The findings show that the ‘type of behavior’ which is articulated in the signifying practice of the construction of the abstract user, ‘Net Generation’, reduces users and technology to a marketing / economical discourse. In addition the idea of the abstract user implies that all users have the same possibilities to achieve ‘success’ in the information society, by being active ‘prosumers’. The concrete users articulate that they feel stressed and pressured in relation to all the choices that they are expected to make. In this sense, the participants do not articulate the (economical) interests as assumed for the ‘Net Generation’, but, rather articulate interests to play, to have a hobby and be social when using information technologies.   What this thesis thus proposes, is to critically explore the ‘taken for granted’ notions of a technological order in society as pertaining to young people. Only if we understand how socially given meaning is constructed can we break loose from the temporarily prioritized values to which the position of technology and users are fixed.

Net generace na sociálních sítích v České republice / Net generation on social networks in the Czech Republic

Bicanová, Monika January 2017 (has links)
The Master's thesis is focused on status and role of social networks in the life of the Czech Net generation (known also as Generation Y). The members of this generation are almost one quarter of the whole population of the Czech Republic nowaday. Based on many theories these representatives are different in several specific aspects from previous generations. Methodological background of this thesis is a qualitative approach through interviews of semi- structured questionnaire survey with ten members of the Czech Generation Y. The research will also present a short experiment with members of the foreign Generation Y for comparison of the results. You can find also structured questionnaire at the end of the survey, which is intended for subsequent validation of the theory for the future research in quantitative way for generalization to the whole Czech Generation Y.

Jonqueres, Jean-marie 14 December 2012 (has links)
In deep submicron VLSI circuits, excessive current density in interconnects is a major concern for analog high current application. If current over maximum density is not effectively mitigated, this can lead to phenomena like electromigration, voltage drop and electrical overload. It is a hot topic of interest in modern circuits due to the decrease of metal track sizes while high currents are necessary in automotive or mobile applications. This thesis had as goal to develop solutions for the consideration of the constraints in the current phase of routing analog blocks strong currents. After a presentation of the phenomena and the state of the art, an algorithmic approach to current driven net generation is introduced. A method to characterize the current is defined. Then an exhaustive routing algorithm is presented and used to search criteria for a good topology. Next, two algorithms are studied and compared, first a greedy algorithm, used as a reference, and a "Divide & Conquer" original algorithm. It shows results improved on average by about 10% for area and almost 27% for CPU time compared with existing solution. The next section focuses on current crowding correction, with a method based on a set of mathematical models. Finally, a conception flow based on the developed solutions is introduced and validated.

Le nuove tecnologie come valore aggiunto del CLIL / Adding Value to CLIL through the New Technology

LEONE, VINCENZA 31 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis is the result of a research study in CLIL and Technologies that arose from the combination of different factors: the desire of investigate the implementation of new technologies at school, considering the possible implication, and the need to improve the quality of language learning giving new stimuli to the students. It is based on a theoretical study and an action research which investigated different school levels and university courses. The research proved the positive stimulus of new technologies as value-added to CLIL and recognised the key role of the teacher in such a double-focus approach.
