Popular sovereignty in EuropeBeetz, Jan P. January 2015 (has links)
This thesis proposes a realist analysis of the contemporary concept of popular sovereignty in its ability to make sense of the EU's legitimacy. Drawing upon Bernard Williams' political thought, a conception of legitimacy should make sense of hierarchical rule as a desirable civic order from within its own historical circumstances at the normative level. In addition, it should offer realistic guidance to political agents, meaning that its political fictions must therefore acquire a certain degree of practical resonance in order to act as heuristic tools. The modern concept of popular sovereignty sets appropriate criteria of legitimacy based upon the bonds created between citizens. Through a genealogical inquiry, I reconstruct conceptions of popular sovereignty which underpin defences of the EU's output, democratic, and identitarian legitimacy from canonical arguments. These justifications of the state consider the people as beneficiaries of security and economic prosperity, as a self-governing demos, and as a cultural nation, respectively. I propose a realist vindication of this multi-faceted conception of popular sovereignty at the normative level, because these different conceptions complement one another in making sense of the sovereign state's legitimacy. The thesis then discusses how the political fictions of the people could simultaneously make sense within the European polity. In short, the citizens of Europe's polities have become part of the normative systems which create judicial-economic, civic-democratic, and socio-cultural relationships within the territorial borders of the European states. In addition, the centralisation of decision-making power and implementation resources has given plausibility to the political fiction of sovereignty. European integration has, however, resulted in a reconfiguration of these normative systems and restructuring of power into a two-tier political order. In this novel context, a realist vindication of the contemporary conception of popular sovereignty is no longer possible. The thesis concludes by suggesting that a demoicratic reconceptualisation of popular sovereignty offers a constructive way to make sense of the EU's legitimacy.

This dissertation’s objective is to explore the possibilities of an integrated research perspective on male violence and exemplify how such research can be conducted. The specific objective is to increase awareness of how men’s childhood experiences, socialization, masculinity and emotions are related to their violence against other men, against themselves and against women (Paper III and IV) and how therapeutic interventions against violence can be analyzed and developed in correspondence with this knowledge (Paper I and II). The research was conducted through qualitative studies. The data collection methods comprised a theoretical review (Paper I), group-interviews (Papers II and III) and interviews (Paper IV). Altogether, 25 men participated in the studies. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the group-interviews (Paper II and III) and biographical analysis wasused to when analyzing the mens life-histories (Paper IV). The findings showed that an integrative perspective can reduce the risk of ecological fallacies and develop the understanding of the complex interaction between the factors behind men’s violence. These findings may also contribute to the development of violence therapies. The theoretical review article (Study I) exemplifies how the theoretical and methodological driven research on social bonds can be adjusted to treatment against male violence. The applied study on a CBT-therapy (Study II) exemplifies how operationalized indicators of pride and shame can be used to determine the quality of the social bonds between therapist and client. The comparison between two groups of men in two opposite masculinity positions (Study III) shows that both groups are carrying ambivalent attitudes towards violence and violence against women. Nevertheless the group’s masculinity constructions and attitudes towards violence correspond with their access to economic, social, political and cultural resources. The biographical focused qualitative study of men in violence treatment (Study IV) shows that the men who have been subjected to severe violence in their childhood are more shame-prone and tend to bypass shame with aggressions and violence. The other men generally describe their violent reaction as controlled. The findings point to the general conclusion that the further development of the understanding of men’s violence, and the development of effective therapies against violence are depending on our ability to integrate research from different scientific perspectives.

"I feel like a person who is already dead" : Förlust, läkning och magisk realism i tre japanska romaner / "I feel like a person who is already dead" : Bereavement, healing and magical realism in three contemporary Japanese novelsWinblad, Julia January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis the subject of grief and healing are examined in three novels by the Japanese writers Hiromi Kawakami, Ruth Ozeki and Banana Yoshimoto. The method for the analysis is based on psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’ Five Stages of Grief theory, but in the analysis of these novels, it became clear that the grief/healing-stages for the protagonists are not expressed in the exact same manner as the non-fictional patients of Kübler-Ross’ study. The analysis shows that this is partly due to the fact that the narratives take place in Japan and that there is a clear intervention where the writers have used magical interruptions in their realistic portrayal of bereavement, to help the protagonists begin to recover. These magical interruptions, this thesis states, are the use of magical realism, especially connected to the long history of Japanese folklore and myth. As a result, this thesis presents a modified model of analysis, which also reflects how the protagonists filled with bereavement and sorrow can be helped to heal and recover by the interruption of fantastic and magical events. Through this study it has become clear that not only is the need for healing significant but the need for family, relationships and a sense of belonging are just as important. To re-connect with their lost loved ones, whomever they may be, these characters must cross through the magical interventions within the narratives and dare to reach out to the people around them, strengthened by their loss and trauma, rather than fearing relationships with others due to previous trauma and grief.

A case for epistemological realism.Cook, Victoria Bancroft. January 1998 (has links)
A Research Report submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts / The Epistemological Realist (ER)project, recently initiated by John McDowell in
Mind and World and Hilary Putnam in his 1994 series of Dewey Lectures, is an
extremely promising one. This project aims to show how a 'commonsense realism'
about the world and our relationship to it can be made tenable in a philosophical
climate increasingly dominated by various forms of anti-realism. At least part of the
reason for the prevalence of anti-realism is the unsatisfactory way in which realism
has traditionally been developed. Epistemological Realism departs from Traditional
Realism in at least three key areas: (a) its account of how perception enables
empirical knowledge, (b) its account of perception itself and (c) its account of how
our empirical knowledge claims bear on reality. The ability of the ER theorist to give
perfectly satisfactory accounts of (a)-(c) does much to reinstate 'commonsense
realism' as a philosophically respectable position.

The Politics of Original Sin: Reinhold Niebuhr's Christian Realism and its Cold War Realist ReceptionSabella, Jeremy Luis January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Michael J. Himes / Reinhold Niebuhr is among the most politically and theologically influential--and most misunderstood--American thinkers of the twentieth century. This misunderstanding is the product of a tendency among Niebuhr's admirers and critics alike to overlook the elaborate interplay of the theology and politics in Niebuhr's thought. I argue that Niebuhr understood himself as a preacher to religion's "cultured despisers," and that Niebuhr construed this role in fundamentally theological terms. As a consequence, there is a dynamic theology underlying his political engagement with the broader culture. Chief among the "cultured despisers" drawn to Niebuhr's thought were the political realists who dominated early Cold War politics. They were particularly compelled by the political insights of Niebuhr's Christian Realism, and proceeded to incorporate these insights into own realist visions. I argue that in the act of appropriating Niebuhr the political realists unwittingly absorbed much of his theology; and in neglecting to recognize the theological underpinnings to Niebuhr's political insights, they ended up misconstruing Niebuhr in important ways. I seek to demonstrate that fully appreciating Niebuhr's contributions to political discourse requires an awareness of how theology suffuses even his most overtly political writings. This project consists of two parts. Part One examines the theological formation of the concept at the heart of Niebuhr's Christian Realism: namely, the doctrine of original sin. From the outset, Niebuhr maintained that elaborating the full political implications of original sin required a theological structure. Through sustained conversations with theological contemporaries Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, Emil Brunner, and his brother H. Richard Niebuhr, Reinhold elaborated the distinctive theological anthropology, understanding of grace and redemption, and account of the dynamic interplay between faith and history underlying his exploration of original sin and its political implications. Niebuhr's Christian Realism, I suggest, is inextricably theological. Part Two analyses Niebuhr's reception among three of the most prominent midcentury political realists: Hans Morgenthau, George Kennan, and Arthur Schlesinger. Although they were among Niebuhr's most astute interpreters, all three figures wrongly presumed that they could extricate the political elements of Niebuhr's thinking on original sin from the theological structure in which this thinking was embedded, and import only these political elements into their own realist visions. Their uses of the concept of original sin indicate that they both adopt far more of Niebuhr's theology than they ever intended to, and misconstrue some of his most profound insights. I close by considering what a theologically grounded Christian Realism has to offer political discourse. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College.
The present work is a proposition on the scenic possibilities of the four plays that make up the last cycle of the work of Henrik Ibsen (Solness the Builder, John Gabriel Borkman, Little Eyolf and When we dead awaken) beyond the limits normally set by Realism. The issue of fidelity to the text is relativized by the notion of a point of view es-tablishing dialogue with references from other breeders, circumscribed by a field of coherence.

Le polymorphisme du héros réaliste-naturaliste chez Balzac, Flaubert, Maupassant et Zola ou le parcours initiatique d'un être oxymorique / Polymorphism of the realist-naturalist hero in the works of Balzac, Flaubert, Maupassant and Zola or the journey of initiation of an oxymoronic human beingTeboul, Annabelle 24 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis questions the representation of the hero by the realist and naturalist movements of the XIXth century. Transgressing six novels and short stories, it aims at highlighting the inherent tension of the heroic figure in the works of Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant and Émile Zola. Despite an apparent refusal of the classic antique model which is illustrated by a trivialization of the main character, the realist-naturalist novelists do not escape from the heroic temptation; by offering a journey of initiation and unusual forms of sacralization, they fabricate a new type of hero, both closer to the concerns of society at that era and influenced by mythical and eternal representations (whether from mythological, biblical, literary, psychoanalytical or religious fields). The dialectic between the societal temporality and the permanence of the legendary is thus to be read. This doctorate thesis therefore seeks to de! monstrate the immutable execution of a heroic symphony within the realist and naturalist poetry while recalling the specific nature of the hero in the work of each author studied

The EU:s security policy : A qualitative idea analysis of measures taken between the years 2015-2017Sendi, Evin January 2019 (has links)
In the past few years, the European Union has been affected by several terrorist attacks and many states have suffered from this. As a reaction to these terrorist attacks, the EU has adopted through treaties several strategies and measures to tackle the issues of terrorism. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the EU’s security policy between the years 2015 and 2017. Both of the main questions are answered through different theories that are provided for the essay. The first one is formulated to answer if the security policy has successfully been securitized and the other is answered through a perspective of realism and liberalism. Furthermore, the report is a qualitative idea analysis and is based on primary sources. The conclusion of the essay regarding the first question is that a complete securitization of terrorists has been fulfilled after the terrorist attacks in Paris 2015. The result regarding the second question shows that the European security policy has liberal tendencies.

Säkerhetspolisens hantering av terrorism : En kvalitativ idéanalys om nationellt intresse & individens frihet / The Säkerhetspolis strategies of terrorism : A qualitative idea analysis of national interest & individual freedomZiarat Zadeh, Hanna January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this report is to analyze the Swedish security service Säkerhetspolisen (SÄPO) actions against terrorism in Sweden. The report will also focus on analyzing the new strategies that the state has implemented for SÄPO after the terrorist attack which happened in Sweden 7th of June 2017 on Drottninggatan. Both of the questions is answered through a perspective of liberalism and realism. This report is grounded on an empirical investigation method and is a qualitative idea analysis. Furthermore, to make this study reliable, the idea analysis is mostly based on primary sources. The conclusions of this report are that SÄPO’s strategies are mostly grounded on liberalized fragments, such as corporation and justice. However, the new strategies of SÄPO against terrorism have become more realistic after the attack on Drottninggatan. SÄPO will be emphasized as the main actor against terrorism. Liberalism and realism as theories will illustrate different views on how Sweden will or should provide security for the country itself.
