This research aims to present, from the students perspective, what it means to be a student in IFES, what are the feelings about themselves, about their pairs, about their family and how do the relations between teacher/student/subject of knowledge happen. The theorical reference adopted in this research was based on the researches of Vigotski and Wallon, who emphasized the historical-cultural perspective and consider that affective and cognitive dimensions interlace in the individual. The methodology used was the case study, insert in the scope of research of qualitative approach. The gathering of data was made through documental analyses and private interviews with twenty 14 to 18 years-old juvenile students, matriculated in the Building Technician Course Integrated to Ensino Médio of IFES campus Colatina-ES. The analysis, on the other hand, is made by grouping of thematic categories, such as: Teachers and Pedagogical practice, Feelings about themselves, Relation with colleagues, Relationship with the family and about being an IFES student. The results pointed to the importance of considering the adolescent as a person who is constituted through the relation with the other and to the fact that the quality of this relation affects his both affective as cognitive dimensions, interfering in school, in his efficiency and his relationship with the others, according to the way each person receives and react to daily situations. They also point to the necessity of the teacher to know the specific features of that age, looking for different methodologies to wake up the student s interest to the knowledge object. In this research, is clear the much young students need someone to hear them, to know who they are, what affected/affect them and how their life experience contributed/contribute to the constitution of their own being

The Effect of Marital Therapy on Physical Affection

Migdat, Tiffany Ann 01 July 2016 (has links)
Research indicates that marital satisfaction is associated with levels of physical affection between partners. This is important because there is evidence of physical and mental health benefits of physical affection. Although past research has shown that marital therapy increases levels of marital and sexual satisfaction, the association between marital therapy and physical affection has not been explored. This study used a treatment group and a control group of 108 married couples to assess the relationship between marital therapy and physical affection over a course of 12 weeks. Using structural equation modeling and an actor partner analytic model, results indicated that marital therapy was significantly associated with increases in physical affection for husbands, but not wives.

Beliefs about difficult feelings

Amin, M. January 2012 (has links)
Section A provides a review of the emotional and experiential avoidance literature with a focus on determining the proximal psychological factors that might lead individuals to avoid experiencing feelings. This section highlights the importance of beliefs, judgements and appraisals about the acceptability of negative emotions, as well as fears about the physical, psychological and social consequences of tolerating internal distress as potential drivers of emotional avoidance. Section B describes the development of a new scale to identify and measure beliefs about experiencing difficult emotions. The paper gives a background and rationale for the study and outlines the methodology that was utilised to construct and psychometrically evaluate the Beliefs about Difficult Feelings Scale (BDFS). 304 participants completed the scale online along with related measures. The six clusters of beliefs that emerged from a factor analysis of 90 pilot items include Catastrophic Beliefs, Emotions are Useful, Negative Evaluation from Others, Emotions are Exhausting/Frustrating, Emotions are Transient and Emotions are Pointless. The psychometric properties of the final 29-item BDFS are promising. The new measure demonstrated good internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity, however further psychometric evaluation is needed on new samples to verify these preliminary findings

Regulation of emotions in individuals experiencing psychogenic non-epileptic seizures

Urbanek, Monika January 2013 (has links)
Despite the long history of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), relatively little is known about the mechanisms that cause and maintain this condition. Emerging research evidence suggests that patients with PNES might have difficulties in regulating their emotions. However, much remains to be learned about the nature of these difficulties and the emotional responses of individuals with PNES. The present study aimed to gain a detailed understanding of emotion regulation processes in patients with PNES, by examining differences between PNES patients and a healthy control group with regards to intensity of emotional reactions, understanding of one’s emotional experience, beliefs about emotions and control of emotional expression. A cross-sectional design was used to compare the PNES group (n=56) and the healthy control group (n=88) on a range of self-report measures. Participants with a diagnosis of PNES reported significantly poorer understanding of their emotions, more negative beliefs about emotions and more control of emotional expression than participants in the control group. Whilst intensity of emotions did not discriminate between the groups, poor understanding and negative beliefs about emotions were found to be significant predictors of PNES, even after controlling for age, education level and emotional distress. Furthermore, the presence of some emotion regulation difficulties was associated with self reported seizure severity. This study provides some evidence supporting emotion regulation difficulties in PNES population, particularly with regards to poor understanding of emotions and negative beliefs about feelings. These findings need to be replicated in future research before definite conclusions can be drawn. The need for tailored psychological therapies addressing specific emotion regulation difficulties is highlighted.

O ensino da contabilidade apoiado na dimensão afetiva da autoeficácia em ambiente virtual de aprendizagem

Araújo, Maria Eugênia Rodrigues January 2017 (has links)
In this research, we developed an educational model considering the affective dimension, integrated into a learning strategy with the goal to strengthen the performance of students in the course of Accounting Sciences during vocational training. In order to conduct the study, we created a distance learning course in virtual learning environment, applying the theory of self-efficacy as a strategy for the execution of activities in the course. Self-efficacy is a broad theoretical construct that conforms to the social responsibility aspects of accountants. The choice to experience this construct in the modality of distance education is due to the motivation to combine emotional aspects and the technological reality in virtual mode, which is part of the academic world and the professional market. The research is sedimented on the government program Open University of Brazil – UAB, run on institutions of higher education as a facilitator of vocational training. The approach to the development of the research is qualitative and makes uses of the technique of single common case study with incorporated units The research was developed in the computer laboratory of the Postgraduate Program in Computing on Education, in the Interdisciplinary Center of New Technologies in Education (CINTED), at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, with students of the undergraduate course in Accounting Sciences of the Federal University of Maranhão –UFMA. Data collection was constituted by a general self-efficacy questionnaire, the self-esteem scale and by observations of the answers and of the pupils' expressions during the activities. For data analysis, the content analysis method was used. The results suggest that the self-efficacy construct serves as support for teachers to structure and incorporate the vicarious experience in their practices, either in the classroom or by distance, when appropriate learning experiences are offered to students. However, the construct of self-efficacy can be associated to other constructs, reason why the self-esteem is inserted in data collection, for a better perception on the performance of the students.

Waiting for power : affection, ethics and politics in the everyday life of popular Chile

Briceño, Pablo Agustin January 2018 (has links)
Based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in población ‘La Victoria’, a working-class neighbourhood in the city of Santiago, this research describes the everyday lives of its inhabitants (pobladores) in the context of contemporary neoliberal Chile. Although the pobladores’ movement had animated Chilean politics since the 1950s, also becoming the main actor in the struggle against the dictatorship, after the return to democracy in 1990 pobladores disappeared from the political arena. Most researchers have proposed that the political absence of pobladores must be understood as an effect of neoliberal modernization – a set of policies implemented during dictatorship and maintained by successive democratic governments after 1990. Their main argument is that a major cultural transformation in Chile has degraded social ties producing a consumeristic, individualistic and depoliticized society. Instead, I propose that pobladores from La Victoria have, despite the transformations, preserved a form of conviviality based on strong affective bonds with kin, friends and neighbours – alongside equally sentimental separations and divisions from others. I argue that, due to their pervasiveness and importance in pobladores’ lives, social relationships are the main agents in the articulation of pobladores’ ethical frameworks guiding their decisions and actions in life. Pobladores’ affective social relationships have allowed them not only to mitigate the side effects of the current neoliberal model, but also to accept, adapt and contest specific aspects of it. In this sense, life in the población has a heterogeneous grammar, a way in which social relations are articulated and disarticulated, activated and de-activated, connecting personal lives to collective processes. This grammar of strong affective ties, terrible betrayals and deep but changing separations and divisions is what I call the ‘politics of the everyday life’. This politics of everyday life lies behind apparently very different historical processes, such as the pobladores’ struggle against dictatorship in the 1980s and their post-1990 absence from the political arena. I contend that what characterizes the current context is not a lack of politics or a ‘depoliticization’ but a particular way in which certain pobladores, known as ‘políticos’ – those interested in collective action in order to produce change in the world – are articulated with or disarticulated from other pobladores in the politics of everyday life in the población.

Depressive Symptoms Moderate the Effects of Positive Interactions on Physiological Stress Reactivity in Married Couples

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: This study investigated the potential influences of a marital interaction involving affectionate touch and/or positive relationship-focused conversation on physiological reactivity to a subsequent laboratory stress task, and whether depressive symptoms moderated these relations. It was hypothesized that 1) the stress task would cause cardiac sympathetic activation and cardiac parasympathetic withdrawal; and that physical affection and/or positive conversation would 2) reduce sympathetic activation as indicated by cardiac interbeat interval (IBI), cardiac pre-ejection period (PEP), and finger pulse transit time (FPTT) and 3) reduce parasympathetic withdrawal (as indicated by respiratory sinus arrhythmia; RSA) in response to stress. Further, we expected that, compared to those lower in reported depressive symptoms, those higher in depressive symptoms 4) would show blunted cardiovascular activation in response to stress across experimental conditions; and after engaging in a positive marital exchange, 5) would demonstrate a smaller interaction-related reduction in stress-related sympathetic activation; but 6) show no difference in interaction-related reduction of stress-related parasympathetic withdrawal. Participants were 183 married couples who were at least moderately happy in their marriages and in generally good health. Participants completed a measure of depression (among other questionnaires) in an online survey, then attended a 3-hour laboratory session. After measuring baseline physiology with spouses in separate rooms, couples were then randomly assigned to either touch (while sitting quietly, then hug), talk (positive conversation, but no touch), both (touch while talking, then hug), or neither (sit quietly without touching or talking). Next, participants separately performed a stress-inducing speech task about their spouses’ strengths and weaknesses. Physiological indicators were recorded throughout the stress task. While positive conversation reduced husbands’ stress-related parasympathetic withdrawal, it predicted greater stress-related activation in wives’ PEP response. Stress reactivity (as indicated by FPTT) was reduced in husbands with lower depressive symptoms when the marital exchange included only touch or only talk, whereas for husbands with more depressive symptoms, there were no effects of the marital interaction. For wives, depressive symptoms predicted blunted cardiovascular activation regardless of positive interaction condition, as illustrated by smaller stress-related reduction in FPTT responses. Furthermore, higher self-reported depressive symptoms predicted larger interaction-related decreases in stress-related IBI responses in wives who experienced spousal touch. This study builds on previous work and is the first to explore how depressive symptoms may influence the relations between affectionate touch and stress reactivity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Psychology 2018
