Moda, teatro e nacionalismo nas cronicas da Revista Popular (1859-1862) / Fashion, theater and nacionalism in Revista Popular's chronicles (1859-1862)

Both periodicals belonged to the French impresario Baptiste Louis Garnier (1823-1844). Due to the multiplicity of subjects noticed during the reading and the summarization of the ninety-three chronicles of the series which constitutes the theme of the present study, for analytical purposes, two main themes have been selected. The choice of these was grounded in the fact that both of them engender critical commentaries on the urge for affirmation of the nationalism in artistic and social manifestations from mid-nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro. Thus, the discussions presented about the corpus are confined to the first contributor¿s rhetoric concerning the foreign fashion in Brazil and the second columnist¿s discourse on the development of the national dramatic art in the 1800s. Such themes appear to be pertinent enough to support the hypothesis that nationalistic ideas are likely to have emanated from these writers, sometimes veiled by the ironical exaltation of the French fashion, sometimes manifested through the defense of the texts and participants in Brazilian literary life. The summaries of the retrieved material and the graphic depictions microfilmed during the research have been attached to this Dissertation as, besides having aided to delimit the analyses which were carried out, they can also be made available for other researchers as the systematization of a source of paramount importance to the study of the cultural aspects of Brazil when under monarchical rule. Moreover, they contribute to the investigation on the consolidation in Brazilian writing context of the genre to which all the collected texts belong ¿ the Chronicles / Mestrado / Literatura Brasileira / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária

A conquista do Prata : analise da cronica de Ulrico Schmidl / The conqueste of the River Plate : analysis of Ulrico Schmidl's chronicles

This research aims to analyze the New World inhabitants¿ discourses at the Ulrico Schmidl¿s chronicle. After approximately seventeen years at South America (1536 ¿ 1553), the Bavarian soldier has returned to Europe, where he has converted himself to the protestant faith and has written his Viaje al Río de la Plata. Based on his account we intend to observe how elements like cannibalism, also described by others authors (like Jean de Léry and Hans Staden), have influenced the travelers narratives, especially about humanity of Indigenous and doubts about the possibilities of his enslaver and conversion. We still intend to study how these descriptions were utilized in mutual attacks between Catholics and Protestants / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

\"Como he doçe cousa reinar\": A construção de uma dinastia sob a ótica de Fernão Lopes / \"Como he doçe cousa reinar\": The construction of a dynasty from the perspective of Fernão Lopes.

Ana Carolina Delgado Vieira 29 March 2011 (has links)
This work aims at analyzing the Lopes trilogy of chronicles (1380? - 1460), namely the Chronicle of D. Pedro I, the Chronicle of D. Fernando and the Chronicle of D. João I, in order to understand the construction of images related to the exercise of royal power outlined by this chronicler. In addition to recording and organizing the history of his kingdom, Fernão Lopess project is to recover the memory of the Avis dynasty. The reading of the Lopes trilogy reveals the ways in which the chronicler chooses to enhance the creation of this model of dynasty, which serves as a mirror to his contemporary and future generations. We also understand that the representations of the \"state of king\" of each monarch presented in these narratives are essential to reveal how the chronicler perceives the different forms and ways of ruling the kingdom. These requirements or the lack of them justify and legitimize the royal power within the chroniclers prose. In this work, we propose to analyze the profiles of the three kings as built by the medieval chronicler Fernão Lopes in his three chronicles. We intend to analyze these chronicles as a whole, recognizing the meaning of each one as a contribution to the construction of the diachronic perspective in the chroniclers speech. In that way we attempt to identify the charge of intention in Lopess speech, which is built on images and symbols of power in each chapter of his chronicles.

Crônicas de Raul Pompéia: um olhar sobre o jornalismo literário do século XIX / Chronicles of Raul Pompéia: a look on the literary journalism of 19th century

Márcia Aparecida Barbosa Vianna 11 March 2009 (has links)
This paper proposes an academic look at the chronicles of Raul Pompéia, a political journalist , famous for his novel O Ateneu , classic of Brazilian literature, but little known by its national periodical publications in the press of the 19th century, especially in serials, during the years of 1880-1894, when he contributed constantly to the political though of his time with the publication of his writings, as an observer of facts and events of everyday life of the Brazilian people. Do grande incêndio que tam raro movimento a Berberia pertubou: estudo e edição diplomática de um relato histórico quinhentista / The grande incendio que com tam raro movimento a Berberia perturbou: analysis and diplomatic edition of a 16th century portuguese historical account

Elena Lombardo 17 September 2015 (has links)
In this work we report on a philological study of a 17th century manuscript included in COD. 13282 of the National Library of Portugal the Sumario de todas as cousas succedidas em Berberia desde o tempo que começou a reinar o Xarife Mulei Mahamet no anno de 1573 te o m do anno de sua morte 1578 no dia da batalha d\'Alcaçer Quibir, em que se perdeo Dom Sebastiam Rey de Portugal. The text is also contained in the Ms. No 41 Serie 2422 of the National Library of Spain, published in 1987 by Francisco Loureiro, who entitled it Crónica do Xarife Mulei Mahamet e del-Rey D. Sebastião (1573-1578). However, Loureiro\'s editorial choices (e.g. his preference for a modernized edition, not preceded by another that would respect the original language of the text, besides the fact he was not aware of the existence of the BNP manuscript) represent a problem. Moreover, Loureiro\'s proposal takes back to a broader issue, which regards the publication practices of the chronicles and historical accounts about Portuguese occupation of Barbary. Therefore, we examined the main methodologies used for the publication of these documents. From these reections, we assumed the task of making a linguistic source avaliable to the academic audience, by proposing a codicological description of the BNP manuscript and its diplomatic edition. The methodology adopted refers mainly to the theoretical proposal of Ivo Castro and Maria Ana Ramos (1986), who suggest to establish the editorial criteria upon the distinction between transcription strategy and tactics and introduce the concept of bibliographical eld.

The scandal in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries according to contemporary chronicles in Latin and French

Demichelis, Hélène 08 April 2017 (has links)
The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries are times of upheavals in spiritual and moral values followed by a wakening of public opinion. The State is arising as well as a political society which represents, along the king, the main actors in chronicles. The study of scandal in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries according to contemporary chronicles offers a range of diversified examples which enable the study of practices or speeches that can be qualified as emotional. These studies are part of a political history more attentive to the actors who seem to play an important role in the history of powers. Texts allow to find the definition of the scandal given by the chroniclers. It goes beyond official frameworks to become that of the author who reflects himself the sensibilities. Scandal appears to be shocking and it represents what oversteps the norm and triggers rumour and fuss. It goes against all conventions and causes indignation when the light is thrown on. Chroniclers share with their contemporaries a real fear of scandal and its consequences so it has to be denounced and ended in order to avoid the divine wrath that can be lead to.The analysis of the vocabulary and the communication built around this notion allow to understand how the scandal is perceived and defined by the actors. The role played by the royal power in the management of its affairs shows that this one, at the end of the fifteenth century, moves towards an institutionalization of the scandal.

La construction de la réalité historique chez le chroniqueur Jean Froissart / The Construction of Historical Reality in Jean Froissart’s Chronicles

Vejrychová, Věra 21 January 2017 (has links)
Jean Froissart´s historical project falls within a specific discourse on historical genres, on relationships between form and truth which an account of deeds is expected to convey, on the manner in which the authority of a story being told is constructed. It is on the very intersection of this context and the individuality of the author that I based my search for the chronicler’s perspectives on the writing of history. Froissart was from the outset concerned with the issues of impartiality and credibility of his account and created a system of references, which grew more and more complex, designed to authenticate his version of important events which had been shaking the West for almost a century. The historical reality which Jean Froissart recreates in his Chronicles is dependent on personal factors which determined his understanding of the world as well as his self-identification within the society of his time. It is undeniably recreated with great storytelling talent, but also – and this has often been overlooked – with growing desire to discover and expose the relations of causes which were at work in the course of the events. Nonetheless, Froissart’s literary means, which are often associated with his artistry as a storyteller, do contribute, for their part, to the authenticity of the story. For if the chronicler presents himself as the one who eternalizes deeds worthy of remembrance, he refuses at the same time to write any other history than the true and truthful one. This primary concern of his should not be obscured by the fact that his approach and methods do not correspond to our contemporary criteria of historical writing.

In the shadow of the night : the gendered subtext of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles

Hoosain, Shakira 08 December 2011 (has links)
Anne Rice writes popular fiction. She is best known for her iconic Vampire Chronicles series. This thesis focuses on the first three volumes of this series: Interview with the Vampire (1976), The Vampire Lestat (1985), and The Queen of the Damned (1988). The main objective of this thesis is to show that whilst Rice's novels often seem very liberal, an examination of her subtext reveals a conservative message. This message helps entrench socio-cultural and political hegemonies because it does not challenge the status quo. In order to see how these conservative leanings are entrenched by Rice, this thesis examines archetypes of the female and the Feminine. Louis is male, but can be viewed as a Feminine character because of his meek subservience to Lestat (the protagonist of the series). Claudia is their daughter, but she is also a woman trapped in a child's body. Claudia seems to have great intellectual freedom, but she is trapped within her body and cannot mature. Gabrielle is Lestat‟s mother. When Gabrielle becomes a vampire, Rice tries to empower Gabrielle by androgynizing her character. However, we find that this androgyny is not empowering because Gabrielle returns to her role as a mother. Akasha is the ancient queen and source of vampirism. She wants to bring about a radical, gynocentric world by killing most men. But subtextually, Akasha‟s defeat represents the defeat of feminism in favour of patriarchy. Despite the seemingly liberal nature of the texts, subtextually there is a trend towards negating the power these characters carry in the text. To explore the flux between the text and the subtext, an array of post-modern reading tools and theoretical approaches have been used. The primary reading strategies include a close reading of the novels, informed by Feminist perspectives, together with other reading strategies such as, Queer Theory, Marxism, deconstruction and the role of the Fantastic. Little academic study has been devoted to Rice‟s work. Her work shows deep philosophical and artistic integrity which lends an elegance and beauty to her texts, but this is undermined by the conservative undertones of her work. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / English / unrestricted

The Untouchable Past and the Incomprehensible Present: Temporal Detachment and the Shaping of History in the Fineshade Manuscript.

Kilpatrick, Hannah January 2011 (has links)
This thesis undertakes a close study of a single manuscript of the early 1320s, written at the priory of Fineshade, Northamptonshire. The manuscript contains a short chronicle and several documents related to the failed baronial rebellion of 1321-22. I argue that, in collaboration with the priory’s patrons, the Engayne family, the chronicler responds to the current situation with an attempt to create meaning from a time of crisis. In the process, he attempts to shape his material through patterns of style and thought inherited from both chronicle and hagiographical traditions, to make the present conform to the known and understood shape of the past. His success is limited by his inability to establish sufficient distance from traumatic events, a difficulty that many chroniclers seemed to encounter when they attempted to turn current events into meaningful historical narrative.
