In the last 50 years the number of studies on adolescence and teenagers has been growing exponentially. From different perspectives and in many fields of research, from anthropology to neurology, from genetics to sociology, marketing and cultural studies, scholars try to trace the identikit of the contemporary teenager. Since the early 50's cinematography captures and highlights trends in teen culture, proposing a set of varied productions belonging to the teen movie genre. The present work aims to explore the contemporary adolescences and teens, the way teen films of Hollywood and the new Italian teen movies reflect them through a narratological lens.

The aim of the study is to analyse the stories of four homosexual women with Muslim backgrounds about coming out as homosexuals, from an intersectional perspective. The experience of coming out as lesbian and the intersectionality are related to different social contexts. The homosexuality becomes a problem in connection to family and countrymen while the Muslim background becomes more of a problem in relationships. Heteronormativity and gender system appear to be cooperating systems of oppression. These women don’t describe themselves as oppressed, but potential oppression is still something that influences their lives. They strive for freedom to be themselves in all everyday situations. The quest for freedom to be able to express their sexuality risks relationships with families and girlfriends. But freedom and symbiosis don’t have to be in opposition. These women have found contexts, for example among friends, where none of the social categories are problematic and where they can experience symbiosis. They can choose certain contexts where they are allowed to express their sexuality. The experiences of coming out is analysed as linked to development in late modernity.

Incarnations: exploring the human condition through Patrick Whites Voss and Nikos Kazantzakis Captain Michales.Harrison, Jen January 2004 (has links)
Nikos Kazantzakis Captain Michales is a freedom fighter in nineteenth century Crete. Patrick Whites Voss is a German explorer in nineteenth century Australia. Two men struggling for achievement, their disparate social contexts united in the same fundamental search for meaning. This thesis makes comparison of these different struggles through thematic analysis of the texts, examining within the narratives the role of food, perceptions of body and soul, landscapes, gender relations, home-coming and religious experience. Themes from the novels are extracted and intertwined, within a range of theoretical frameworks: history, anthropology, science, literary and social theories, religion and politics; allowing close investigation of each novels social, political and historical particularities, as well as their underlying discussion of perennial human issues. These novels are each essentially explorations of the human experience. Read together, they highlight the commonest of human elements, most poignantly the need for communion; facilitating analysis of the individual and all our communities. Comparing the two novels also continues the process of each: examining the self both within and outside of the narratives, producing a new textual self, arising from both primary sources and the contextual breadth of such rewriting.

The need for teaching the escatological gospel of both coming of Jesus Christ in the twenty - first century especially if we see the day of his Parousia approachingHebert, David K. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is designed to outline the systematic-theological and theological-historical basis for the Eschatological Gospel of Both Comings of Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha Mashiach). This cohesively combines Jesus‘ First Coming (for redemption, reconciliation and restoration) with His Second Coming (for the Rapture/Resurrection of the Church/Body of Christ and judgment at the Day of the Lord/Yahweh) into the complete salvation of the Church. The historical writings of the Patristic, Ante- and Post-Nicene Fathers are examined to ensure the continuity of this Eschatological Gospel message being communicated through their writings to the Early Church. The remainder of Church history is examined to ensure the Eschatological Gospel continued to be communicated by the Church as a part of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20. Then, in keeping with the eschatological prophetic intent of the Parable of the Wheat and Tares (Weeds) in Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, of both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan coexisting and growing until ―the end of the age,‖ the antithesis of the Eschatological Gospel is examined—Satan‘s plan of lies, deception and heresy throughout history, culminating with the explosion of activity since 1948. This satanic plan is described as being not only insidiously deceptive by recruiting converts to the kingdom of darkness in rebellion and opposition to the kingdom of God, but also as preparing the way for the End-time/Last Days‘ ten-nation confederacy to be led by the antichrist. Biblical chronology is used to trace the history of both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness to the present day. Finally, the ―Signs of the Times‖ in modern history are examined, thereby showing the need for the Eschatological Gospel to be taught in the twenty-first century, especially as the day of the Lord Jesus Christ‘s Parousia rapidly approaches. / Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics / D.Th.
Banana fruits represent the fourth largest most important product commercialized worldwide.
Brazil is one of the largest banana producers in the world and is also one of the countries that
waste the most. Aiming to reduce wastage, green banana has been considered an ideal product
to be industrialized, because it contains a large amount of starch, which part of it is considered
resistant starch, with physiological effects similar to those of alimentary fiber. Given this, the
present work aims to extract starch from green banana (lady’s finger kind) and modify it
hydrothermally by two distinct methods. From the starches obtained were evaluated the
functional properties and their possible use as an ingredient in food processing. For the
extraction of the starch, the green banana pulp was treated with bisulfite solution 1%. For
hydrothermal modification by heat moisture treatment (THM), the starches had their moisture
adjusted to 15%, 20% and 25%. For modification by annealing (ANN), the starch was treated
with excess of water in a water bath at temperatures of 45, 50 and 55 ºC for 16 h. The native
and modified starches were analyzed physico-chemically and the results were compared with
the corn starch. The functional properties were also analyzed. The extraction yield was
23.80%, with good quality. The resistant starch content with the modification by THM 25%
got reduced compared to the native starch from 24.92% to 20.74% and increased with the
modification by ANN 50 ºC to 26.95%. The THM 25% increased amylose content compared
to native starch from 42.13% to 47.10%, while the ANN 50 °C reduced it to 38.60%. The
swelling power (SP) was reduced in starch modified by THM. The ANN increased the SP of
the starches at 70 °C. The green banana starches were less soluble than commercial corn
starch. The TTLH 25% increased the capacity of water absorption (CWA) in 34.85% and the
oil absorption capacity (OAC) in 14.20% compared to native starch. The ANN 50 °C reduced
the OAC in 3.55%. The modifications increased the minimum concentration of gel formation
(CGF) and recorded increase of 6% (native starch) to 12% (THM 25%). All modified starches
showed pulp clarity greater than the values for banana native starch. The hydrothermal
treatments promoted a reduction in syneresis and this reduction was more pronounced in the
starch modified by ANN 55 ºC, with a reduction of 45.22% compared to the native starch.
After the ANN, the starches obtained syneresis similar to commercial corn starch, analyzed
just for comparison. Considering quality and yield of extraction, resistant starch content and
functional properties that showed varied results after modifications, it was concluded that the
starch from the green banana (lady’s finger kind) is technologically feasible and it can be used
as an ingredient in various segments of the food industry.

“Day by day: coming of age is a process that takes time”: supporting culturally appropriate coming of age resources for urban Indigenous youth in care on Vancouver IslandMellor, Andrea Faith Pauline 16 July 2021 (has links)
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s first call to action is to reduce the number
of Indigenous children and youth in care, including keeping young people in culturally
appropriate environments. While we work towards this goal, culturally appropriate
resources are needed to support children and youth as evidence shows that when
Indigenous youth have access to cultural teachings, they have improved physical, mental,
emotional, and spiritual health outcomes.
Our project focused on the protective qualities of Indigenous coming of age teachings.
Together with our community partner Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services,
we worked to develop resources that inform and advocate for a culturally-centered
coming of age for urban Indigenous youth living in foster care in Victoria, British
Columbia on Lekwungen Territory. This dissertation begins with a literature review to
provide the social and historical context surrounding urban Indigenous youth-in-care’s
access to coming of age teachings. This is followed by a description of the Indigenous
research paradigm that guided our work, what it meant for us to do this project in a good
way, and the methods that we used to develop three visual storytelling knowledge sharing
tools. Three manuscripts are presented, two published and one submitted, that reflect a
strength-based vision of coming of age shared by knowledge holders who participated in
our community events.
The first manuscript retells the events of the knowledge holder’s dinner, where
community members shared their perspectives on four questions related to community
engagement and youth support. An analysis of the event’s transcripts revealed key themes including the responsibility of creating safe-spaces for youth, that coming of
age is a community effort, and the importance of youth self-determining their journey. A
graphic recording and short story are used to illustrate and narrate the relationship
between key themes and related signifiers. This manuscript highlights the willingness of
the community to collectively support youth in their journeys to adulthood.
The second manuscript focuses on our two youth workshops that had the objective of
understanding what rites of passage youth in SCCFS’s care engage with and how they
learn what cultural teachings were most important to them. The findings suggest that
when youth experience environments of belonging, and know they are ‘part of something
bigger’, qualities like self-determination, self-awareness, and empowerment are
strengthened.
The third manuscript focuses on how we translated our project findings into different
storytelling modalities using an Indigenist arts-based methodological approach. The
project findings provided the inspiration and content for a fictional story called Becoming
Wolf, which was adapted into a graphic novel, and a watercolour infographic. These
knowledge sharing media present our project findings in accessible and meaningful ways
that maintain the context and essences of our learnings.
This research illustrates how Indigenous coming of age is an experience of
interdependent teachings, events, and milestones, that contribute to the wellness of the
body, mind, heart, and spirit of youth and the Indigenous community more broadly.
Through our efforts, we hope to create a shared awareness about the cultural supports
available to urban Indigenous youth that can contribute to lifelong wellness. / Graduate
