Audet, Michel 23 July 2021 (has links)
In literary translation, humour is known to raise numerous difficulties and the scholars interested in its translation most often study puns, jokes, and short texts, leaving aside the translation of humour in long texts, such as novels. The object of this study is humour in David Lodge's novel, Deaf Sentence, and in its French version, La vie en sourdine, translated by Maurice and Yvonne Couturier. The thesis has five chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to humour narrated, lexicalised and studied. In chapter 2, I lay out the conceptual and operational frameworks of the case study and in chapter 3 I introduce David Lodge, the novel under study and the Couturier couple who created the French version. Chapter 4 focuses on the passages in the source text to which I attributed humorous effects, or which contribute to them, and Chapter 5 is dedicated to the target text, its similarities and differences with the source text and the fate of the passages to which I attributed humorous effects, or which contributed to it, in the source text. A NATIONAL SURVEY ON THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST IN EDUCATIONAL PLACEMENT DECISIONS FOR DEAF STUDENT

Gibbons, Elizabeth January 2008 (has links)
One of the most controversial issues in the field of education is the determination of the educational placement of deaf K-12 students. Although school psychologists are involved in the determination process, little is known about their specific role in decision-making. School psychologists (n=357) with varying degrees of specialization in this area were surveyed with regard to their experience and perceptions. Results indicated that student audiological status predicts the types of assessment data that school psychologists collect and report in order to inform educational placement decisions. Participants who responded to the survey on the basis of their experience making placement decisions for deaf students (n=54) perceived themselves as less influential over the decisions than participants who responded on the basis of their experience making placement decisions for hearing students (n=303). Additionally, there was a relationship between school psychologists' specialization in the area of deafness and the interpretation of the phrase, the "least restrictive environment." Possible explanations and the associated implications of these findings are discussed. / School Psychology

An Historical Perpsective On the Academic Education Of Deaf Children In New South Wales 1860s-1990s

Crickmore, Barbara Lee January 2000 (has links)
This is an historical investigation into the provision of education services for deaf children in the State of New South Wales in Australia since 1860. The main focus is those deaf children without additional disabilities who have been placed in mainstream classes, special classes for the deaf and special schools for the deaf. The study places this group at centre stage in order to better understand their educational situation in the late 1990s. The thesis has taken a chronological and thematic approach. The chapters are defined by significant events that impacted on the education of the deaf, such as the establishment of special schools in New South Wales, the rise of the oral movement, and aftermath of the rubella epidemic in Australia during the 1940s. Within each chapter, there is a core of key elements around which the analysis is based. These key elements tend to be based on institutions, players, and specific educational features, such as the mode of instruction or the curriculum. The study found general agreement that language acquisition was a fundamental prerequisite to academic achievement. Yet the available evidence suggests that educational programs for most deaf children in New South Wales have seldom focused on ensuring adequate language acquisition in conjunction with the introduction of academic subjects. As a result, language and literacy competencies of deaf students in general have frequently been acknowledged as being below those of five their hearing counterparts, to the point of presenting a barrier to successful post-secondary study. It is proposed that the reasons for the academic failings of the deaf are inherent in five themes. / PhD Doctorate

Addressing the development of full-service schools to include learners who are deaf, using the auditory oral approach

Retief, Wilhelmina Francina 30 November 2006 (has links)
Learners who are deaf and who are using the auditory oral approach are currently included in ordinary schools in South Africa. By default, most educators are not adequately trained to include these learners successfully. Transformation and train-ing, specific to the context of inclusive education, is thus undeniable. Therefore, in order to address the development of full-service schools to include learners who are deaf and who are using the auditory oral approach, a literature study on the nature of inclusive education with the focus on full-service schools to include the mentioned learners, took place. A qualitative study was conducted and data was gathered by interviews with six, learners, parents and educators. The findings were corroborated with the literature study with a view to addressing learner and system needs in order to include these learners successfully in a full-service school. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to address the development of full-service schools to include the mentioned learners. / Educational Studies / M. Ed.

The history of inclusive education presents major changes and transformations in the course of the history of this nation. Since the 19th century this proposal, together with its laws, guidelines, etc. are being organized, adapted and applied to Brazilian education. However, some events in the year of 2011 brought suspicions in relation to a possible subject oppressed in this process. At the beginning of the year above the Ministry of Education MEC demanded the closing of bilingual schools for Deaf People claiming social segregation of same. From there, struggles, protests and political events have happened and intensified by several regions of Brazil during the course of this year; acirrando the confrontation between an educational policy linguistic - Bilingualism: Libras is the mother tongue and Portuguese Language, second language - and an inclusive educational policy, by which the Deaf - not accepted as subjects of a cultural individuality - should study in regular schools and classes. This whole 2-2 emanates from an epistemological concern and the need for research. Therefore, to achieve the objective of this research, it has also been proposed: A) Present the historical trajectory, the key moments in favor of the education of the Deaf; b) Trace the legal and political advances of inclusion with focus on students with deafness; c) Check the inclusive education in practice with Deaf students; (d) Check what other surveys/ literatures have to contribute with this theme. In This way, were used as research instruments, the bibliographic research and observation in the field. It is believed that this research contributes to the debate and reflection on the real social inclusion of Deaf People / Esta dissertação, calcada nas políticas públicas da educação inclusiva, objetiva investigar como a aplicabilidade das mesmas vem acontecendo em um município no interior do Estado de São Paulo do ponto de vista do aluno Surdo.

Vilela, Cristiano das Neves 17 February 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to investigate the genesis of deaf education in Delmiro Gouveia, state of Alagoas. This is a historical research based on the assumptions of Cultural History and Identity and Cultural Studies and covers a time frame between 1981 and 2005. Delmiro Gouveia is a city with a unique industrial history and inherited its name from the pioneer in the energy production with São Francisco river waters. Also, by its geographical location in the state's limits, this is the farthest city from the capital and where, consequently, the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) took longer to be known. We seek to discuss the issue of deafness in the Brazilian sertão based on the first institution to meet deaf in the extreme sertão of Alagoas: the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional People (APAE) of Delmiro Gouveia, founded in 1981. Data collection was conducted based on documentary research and semi-structured interviews with deaf people, their parents and teachers. We analyze their practices and track which representations about the deaf and deafness were usually constructed and accepted. We showed the actors who participated in the deaf schooling, how they learned Libras in the sertão and how the particular language needs of deaf people were seen in their families and institutional environment. We concluded that activities in APAE did not meet the linguistic and educational needs of the deaf students; that Libras' introduction in Delmiro Gouveia occurred in 1998 through the social worker Elias; and that social representations about deaf people in the observed period relate to the stereotypes associated with a medicalized view of deafness and legitimized speeches that considered deaf people as disabled, aggressive, inefficient and hampered by being born in the sertão. Thus, we intend to contribute to the educational history of the deaf in Alagoas and in the Brazilian Northeast, which is still lacking this kind of investigation.
