Transportation and Homeric Epic

Power, Michael O'Neill, mopower@ozemail.com.au January 2006 (has links)
This thesis investigates the impact of transportation — the phenomenon of “being miles away” while receiving a narrative — on audience response. The poetics of narrative reception within the Homeric epics are described and the correspondences with the psychological concept of transportation are used to suggest the appropriateness and utility of this theory to understanding audience responses in and to the Iliad and Odyssey. The ways in which transportation complements and extends some concepts of narrative reception familiar to Homeric studies (the Epic Illusion, Vividness, and Enchantment) are considered, as are the ways in which the psychological theories might be adjusted to accommodate Homeric epic. A major claim is drawn from these theories that transportation fundamentally affects the audience’s interpretation of and responses to the narrative; this claim is tested both theoretically and empirically in terms of ambiguous characterization of Odysseus and the Kyklōps Polyphēmos in the ninth book of the Odyssey. Last, some consideration is given to the ways in which the theory (and its underlying empirical research) might be extended.

E-book Security: An Analysis of Current Protection Systems

Qiang, Hao January 2003 (has links)
<p>E-books have a wide range of application spheres from rich-media presentations to web site archiving, from writing to financial statement. They make publishing, storing and distributing of information quite simple. As a new publication technique, the main concern with e-books is the copyright infringement. To prevent e-books from free duplication and distribution, different security mechanisms are used in their publishing and distributing processes. By investigating and analyzing Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Electronic Book Exchange (EBX), this thesis presents some security issues that the e-book industry are or should be aware. Various security problems and possible solutions are highlighted by means of two case studies.</p>

Barnlitteratur i förskolan

Larsson, Lena January 2008 (has links)
Respondenternas svar stämmer väl överens med litteraturen.</p> / <p>The purpose of this paper is to investigate what pedagogues think about the importance of children’s literature, how children’s books are used in daily activities and how this correlates to the curriculum. This is done through literature studies and qualitative interviews. The survey group consists of five preschool teachers, whose age and work experience vary.</p><p>The result shows that the pedagogues mostly use literature when reading to the children, when they shall rest. The story time is followed up by discussion and different activities. The children also use literature, when they “read” and look in the books, individual or together. According to the pedagogues the children’s literature has great influence on language development, it stimulates imagination and works as a support in problem solving. It has also a cultural value and a relaxing function. With that, the pedagogues consider that the children´s literature correlates to the curriculum. The result corresponds to the literature well.</p>

Alfons Åberg and Pippi Longstocking : From a gender pespective

Fjäll, Nathalie Unknown Date (has links)
<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>The main purpose of this thesis is to make the gender perspective of children’s literature visible. I wanted to find out if the books about Pippi Longstocking and Alfons Aberg are suited as basis for a gender discussion among students in the school. By proceed from the books I did a study in a children group in a youth recreation center. The total number of students was 10 aged 6 to 10 years. I chose the books and chapters I found most appropriate as a basis for a gender discussion. I read high for the group and afterwards they got some statement to reflect over. My conclusion is that both Alfons and Pippi are very good models for children because they digress from the current sex role pattern. The books adapt very well as a discussion basis concerning gender. However there was some difficulties to let the children to keep focus on the primary question it self. In this kind of investigation an experienced leader who can guide the conversation is needed. By using different valuation exercises you can make the conversations more stimulating for the children.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Keywords:</strong> Alfons Aberg, Pippi Longstocking, children’s book, gender, equality</p><p> </p>

American libraries in a global context

Teresa A DeVoe 5 April 2007 (has links)
This paper positions American libraries within a global ecology of resource consumption and waste. With regard to environmental sustainability, the provision of information in print and electronic formats represents a drain on natural resources, and this paper explores various ways of measuring it. Using a mixed methods approach, the author calculates an Ecological Footprint of an average American public library, synthesizes primary and secondary sources to describe key areas of the American library’s global supply chain, and reviews available resources, which can assist librarians and information professionals in addressing their institutions’ environmental sustainability. This exploratory study finds that although the goods and services provided by libraries and information centers do carry environmental impacts, there are a growing number of options for institutions to eliminate wastes at their source, recycle, and practice socially responsible purchasing.

Døm altid bogen på omslaget: om boghistorie og litteraturanalyse - og Gittes monologer

Nielsen, Klaus 12 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Relation between Accounting Choices, Book Values and Stock Prices

Buryla, Eliza January 2008 (has links)
This study examines the relationship between stock prices and accounting figures, primarily the book value of equity and earnings, as well as the market perception of accounting choices implemented by companies. Market event studies from late sixties have initiated numerous of researches, and the majority of contemporary results were consistent with strong belief in the market efficiency theory. The book value of equity and earnings have been proved to have the highest explanatory power of future stock prices. Other accounting-related issues, like inventory methods or accounting for business combination, were proven to have reliable impact on the stock prices. Moreover, the cash flow implications triggered by the accounting change are not an indispensable condition to influence the stock price level. Although a great body of research has treated the relationship between accounting choices and stock prices, a clear-cut mechanism is not well specified. The evidence is inconsistent, and the consequences of accounting change are difficult to measure. However, the accounting figures included in financial statements remain the most important measure of the companies’ performance. Due to the economic and technical progress, which considerably modified the structure of companies and the environment in which they operate, further studies are advisable in order to maintain the reliability of accounting figures on significant level.
