An assessment of the marketing capabilities of trade book publishers in South Africa

Willis, Catherine Jean January 2016 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, School of Literature, Language and Media in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of M.A Publishing Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, 2016 / The purpose of this study is to investigate the current marketing capabilities of trade book publishers in South Africa. In addition, this study ascertains how these marketing capabilities impact on trade book publishers' sales and brand performance. There are currently several gaps in the literature on both marketing capabilities within the global publishing industry as well as gaps in the literature on the South African trade publishing industry. The main research problem is the lack of understanding of the marketing capabilities of trade book publishers in South Africa and how these capabilities can impact on the sales performance of these trade book publishers. This study is a qualitative, case study that examined four marketing capabilities within trade publishing houses in South Africa. Four propositions (on marketing communications, pricing, product innovation and channel management) were developed and tested in the study. The Resource-based view (RBV) theory as the main theoretical lens for this study is examined. The research was gathered through interviews over a 2 month period that were conducted at the publishers’ offices. 5 publishing companies took part in the study and a total of 15 interviews were conducted. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed. The transcriptions were loaded on to an analysis software tool called MaxQDA which allowed easy analysis by the researcher. All four propositions established were supported by the research. These marketing capabilities exist within all five trade publishing houses but that they are not being utilised as they should be. There is definite room for improvement in the publishing industr. The most significant capability for the trade publishing industry is the marketing communications capability as this is the most widely used. The originality of this research is that it is a case study in South African trade publishing houses and that it is looking at the marketing capabilities of trade publishing houses through the RBV approach. The implications for the industry are mostly in-house implication as the models generated require an organizational change within the publishing houses. Limitations of this study as well as suggestions for future research are outlined in this study. / GR2017

A conquista do sagrado - jornalistas como editores de livros / A conquista do sagrado - jornalistas como editores de livros

Costa, Renata Carvalho da 09 October 2009 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the working process of journalists who edit books, whether publishing company owners or hired editors. Based on a nondirective questionnaire, interviews were applied to book editors who declared themselves as journalists by academic education or professional experience, and editors majored in book editing as well. The interviews were examined and categorized by themes, settled by content analysis techniques. This research allows to assert that journalists, even when working in other field as book editing, still feel themselves related to journalism, see book as an object to be venerated and have a different perception of book production from traditional editors\' perspective, in which the journalist-editors claim to use their news background.

O trabalho com o texto na produção de livros: os conflitos da atividade na perspectiva ergodialógica / The work with texts in book publishing: activity conflicts in the ergodialogic perspective

Muniz Júnior, José de Souza 26 November 2010 (has links)
This paper analyses a set of professional practices I call text intervention (IT) which intend to make a text publishable as a book. I discuss the concrete activity of authors, editors, copyeditors and proofreaders that interfere, sequentially, in the features of a written text before its publishing. The main objective was to understand their everyday work, based on their material and subjective conditions, and the social voices that comment their activity. The theoretical references are organized in three guidelines: communication (particularly Martín-Barberos mediations theory), language (particularly the dialogic approach to discourse) and work (particularly the ergologic approach to activity). From this intersection appears an ergodialogic approach to the value conflicts considering values as prescription tools discursively organized. The first part of the empirical study consisted in the selection of some normative, opinionative and scientific texts about this subject. In the second part I collected testimonies from four people involved in a book IT, in which I adopted semi-structured interviews and simple autoconfrontation. The analysis suggests two main conclusions: (i) the validity of ergodialogic approach for the study of text intervention and media work; (ii) the complex and contradictory nature of publishing practices nowadays.

O livro nos textos jesuíticos do século XVI - edição, produção e circulação de livros nas cartas dos jesuítas na América Portuguesa (1549-1563) / The book production process during the 16th century: edition, production and the circulation of books in the Jesuit´s letters in the Portuguese America ( 1549-1563)

Adriana Gabriel Cerello 21 September 2007 (has links)
Using as reference the work \"Cartas dos Primeiros Jesuítas do Brasil\" organized by Serafim Leite, this study aims to analyse some of the aspects related to the book production process during the XVI century, particularly the ones that refer to the writing and editing of manuscripts and prints inside and outside the perimeter of the Catholic Church, and the circulation in both the Metropolis and the Colony. By analysing a particular historical moment in which the way texts were read, written and divulged went through deep changes, the study seeks to retrieve part of the history of the materiality of books in the XVI century.

Little mouse : a journey : the making of a picture-book artwork

Chang, Ching-Yu January 2017 (has links)
The picture book is an artistic medium is part of literature, especially of children’s literature. This discussion of the picture book extends to the dynamic between author and illustrator, and interactions between the verbal and the visual, as described by contemporary researchers, such as Maria Nikolajeva, Lawrence R. Sipe, and Carole Scott. Most of them were not picture book creators, so the voice of the picture book’s creator is easily overlooked. To fill the gap between the researcher and the creator, this project explores the creative process of the picture book by studio-art research. This project is concerned with the creation process of a picture book, presenting a coherent overview of an approach to creating an artist’s picture book, especially in the idea of development through both visual and narrative by two methods: research and practice. This thesis demonstrates my framework of creating an artistic picture book, Little Mouse. Chapter one discusses the methodology of the studio-art research, compares practical-led research and practical-based research, and identifies my multicultural background, to set the foundation of this project. In Chapter two, I applied a part of practical-led methodology to adapt and transfer a range of sources from history, theory, literature and popular culture to build up and enhance the depth of my concept of Little Mouse, which encompasses and analyses my core interest - a life-changing journey. Chapter three discusses how I applied practical-based methodology to reflect the progress of the practical work of making Little Mouse, particularly focusing on how framed a fiction story, and discussing step by step my approach to illustration practice. In the last chapter, I tested my potential readers to review whether my work succeeded in communicating and delivering my visual research in the form of my finished book. This project hybridizes multicultural sources to form a contemporary picture book which blurs the boundaries between illustrator/writer and reality/fiction. This also provides a case study of the picture book for bridging research and picture book’s creator and demonstrates a process of understanding and interpreting creative activities.

The Passage of the Comic Book to the Animated Film: The Case of the Smurfs

Baldwin, Frances Novier 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of history and culture on the passage of the comic book to the animated film. Although the comic book has both historical and cultural components, the latter often undergoes a cultural shift in the animation process. Using the Smurfs as a case study, this investigation first reviews existing literature pertaining to the comic book as an art form, the influence of history and culture on Smurf story plots, and the translation of the comic book into a moving picture. This study then utilizes authentic documents and interviews to analyze the perceptions of success and failure in the transformation of the Smurf comic book into animation: concluding that original meaning is often altered in the translation to meet the criteria of cultural relevance for the new audiences.
