Teaching with Audiobooks in an EFL Classroom : The Didactical Benefits of Envisionment, Inclusion, and Narration in Audiobooks / Teaching with Audiobooks in an EFL Classroom : The Didactical Benefits of Envisionment, Inclusion, and Narration in Audiobooks

Castillo Silva, Cynthia, Alatas, Esin January 2023 (has links)
This paper aims to investigate how audiobooks can be used didactically in the EFL classroom. The research questions are: “How do EFL students perceive and visualize the storyworld when listening to audiobooks?”, “Does EFL students’ comprehension differ when listening to an audiobook as opposed to reading a printed book”, and lastly, “What are the benefits of using audiobooks didactically in an EFL classroom?”. A mixed method has been used in conducting a survey with the participation of 30 ninth graders from Östergårdsskolan in Halmstad. The survey is divided into three parts where the first two parts are based on Neil Gaiman's novel The Graveyard Book and the third part focuses on the students’ attitudes towards audiobooks. This paper will draw on the theories of Judith Langer, Lars Elleström as well as those of Iben Have and Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen. The survey used in this paper is theoretically founded on Langer’s five stances of envisionment. The students were divided into two groups where the control group read a printed passage and the other group listened to the passage. The results indicate that the participants had a positive attitude towards audiobooks as they found such affordances as hearing the pronunciation as well as being able to multitask. Previous research indicates that there are didactical advantages of using audiobooks with students. This paper suggests that with the increased growth of digitization, audiobooks should be considered as a learning tool in the EFL classroom.

Högläsning som språkutvecklande aktivitet : En kunskapsöversikt om hur lärare kan arbeta med högläsning på ett språkutvecklande sätt och hur det påverkar eleverna / Reading aloud as a language development activity : A literature review of how teachers can work with reading aloud in a language development way and how it affects students

Johansson, Kajsa, Mitev, Joanna January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this literature review was to examine how reading aloud in school can be used as a language development activity by the teacher and how it affects students. The results of this review were based on two dissertations and seven scientific articles, selected by searching in different databases. The dissertations and scientific articles were both national and international. A thematic analysis was made to categories the samples, which resulted in three themes being identified. These themes were book talks, book choice, and the teacher’s role in reading aloud. The results showed that reading aloud in itself does not have a language development effect, but instead it depends on the teacher’s work with the material. Book talk and book choice were described as useful and beneficial methods to make reading aloud language developing. However, it became clear that not all types of book talks and book choice were beneficial. The teacher’s important role in language development was again described, for example through the use of open questions in book talks and by varying the genre of the choice of book. If reading aloud is carried out in a language-developing way, the students´ vocabulary, reading comprehension and listening comprehension can be developed, among other things.

The New Gatekeepers: How Blogs Subverted Mainstream Book Reviews

Johnson, Rebecca E. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Book reviewing has a fraught history in the United States. Reviewers have long been accused of not being analytical enough. It should be no wonder then with the emergence of social media that online book reviewing has become increasingly popular. Online reviewers, especially book bloggers, are no literary gatekeepers in their own right, shaping the tastes of readers across the world. Book blogs in particular pay special attention to titles which have long been derided by institutions such as libraries, academia, publishers, and bookstores. These literary gatekeepers typically ignore romance, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, young adult fiction, comic books, and certain kinds of children’s literature, calling it lowbrow. Book bloggers, though, demonstrate that such genre fiction is much more than escapist, mixing enjoyment with the literary. In addition, book blogs create space for women who have been systematically excluded from reviewing. The primary way that they do this is by subverting the male gendered language and structure of reviews.

Oprah and Her Book Club: More than Mass Media Money-Maker

Jones, Carrie S. Lilly 05 1900 (has links)
With her Book Club, talk show host Oprah Winfrey has used the relatively new technology of television to revive literature. Despite the odds against her--selecting hard-to-read, quirky books by generally unknown authors--Winfrey has successfully created women's spaces for the 1990s, not so different from the American women's social clubs from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the French salons of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This study will show how Oprah's Book Club allows readers, especially women, to use the psychological processes of transference and transactional reading by using fictional literature from the Book Club to discuss sensitive areas of their lives.
