O dia em que matamos James Cagney: da versão impressa a uma versão digital

Costa, Thiago Pereira da 05 May 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:46:24Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Thiago Pereira da Costa.pdf: 29015644 bytes, checksum: c6afc5aa5393c7ed108a76ca67ae8865 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-05-05 / In this dissertation, O Dia em Que Matamos James Cagney: from a printed to a digital version, our aim is to create a multimedia e-book from the short story O Dia em Que Matamos James Cagney by Moacyr Scliar, originally published in the author s debut book, O carnaval dos animais (1968) and later included in different anthologies. The choice for this tale is justified because it has a narrative that focuses in the audience reactions in face of a film screening as a theme. Having as hypotheses the possibility to establish parallels between different languages, the transposition of the Scliar s tale to an e-book will permit us to discuss the limits and possibilities of the digital language as a medium to literature. The options to the digital product proposed here are based on the text analysis of the short story, and for that, we have considered: a) its possible connection to the fantastic gender; b) the reception of the cinematographic narrative held in the story.

Investigations into botanical contact printing (where the light meets the trees; thirteen variations)

Manwiller, Christine Marie 01 May 2018 (has links)
Investigations in Botanical Contact Printing (Where the Light Meets the Trees; Thirteen Variations) explores the process of botanical contact printing on paper, culminating in a series of thirteen handmade artist books. Each of the thirteen books contains a poem from a collection of thirteen poems written by Alice Yousef. Every element of the book: materials, structure, calligraphed text, type of botanical contact print, sometimes the enclosure, responds to the poem, providing a visual interpretation of the written word. The completely different approaches to binding structure in this series intend to not only visually support the text, but also explore the possibilities of botanical contact print imagery in the book form.

Drawing from the Book of Nature

Richard, Amy 01 May 2016 (has links)
My work is a response to the miraculous energy exhibited in nature, an invisible power that creates exquisite structures and designs in every living thing around us only to destroy them and begin again. Specifically, it is inspired by a lifelong fascination with the detritus left behind. Shimmering maple tree seeds, decaying oak leaves, or delicate marine relics awash on the beach are tangible (and daily) reminders that life is precious and fleeting, but also hopeful as that energy is always transformed into something new. The drawings, pulp prints and sculptures produced for my thesis are futher animated by the belief that nature is telling us something with its expressive vocabulary of lines, shapes, textures and colors. In every weather-worn remnant, there is a narrative—a life history and lessons to be learned. Captivated by the recurring forms and patterns found on land and in the sea, I find myself trying to decipher this language through close observation and interaction with the objects I collect, study and draw from, as well as the natural materials used to produce the work. Through the rituals of drawing and erasing, steaming, cooking and preparing fiber, concealing and revealing imagery, form and text, I find myself connecting with these narratives and participating in an age-old dialogue with nature.

What kind of gallery is a book?: Representation in U.S. print culture, 1880-1940

Krammes, Brent M. 01 January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is wrapped up in a comparison of book and museum, which raises questions about the visual technology of the printed page itself: a black and white space. Articles and histories on paper production of the nineteenth century stress the necessity of bleaching wood pulp or rags in order to produce “beautiful,” “polished,” “virginal,” “clean” white paper. Bleaching paper to create a normalized, aestheticized whiteness, upon which to craft the cultural capital of the book, largely anticipates the later use of whiteness in the modern art gallery, where whiteness becomes a “neutral” or “objective” or “normal” color upon which to hang visual art or print words. In certain contexts, especially during Reconstruction and later during the Harlem Renaissance, authors saw the black and white contrast of the printed page as a symbol of racial segregation—whiteness and blackness following strictly ordered patterns. This dissertation thus investigates the shifting symbolism of black text on a white visual field between 1880 and 1940. Several of the subjects of my dissertation have been largely overlooked by critics, (Celia Thaxter, Simon Pokagon, Melvin Tolson), although previous studies have examined the way books of modernist poetry become display spaces—the white space of each page like a wall or frame which affords the lyric poem similar attention to modernist visual art, and imitating styles of display made famous by Alfred Stieglitz in his galleries. Poets thus become curators as well as authors. My dissertation expands these studies to include works written before the modernist period (Thaxter and Pokagon), and after it (William Carlos Williams, E. E. Cummings, and Tolson), as well as analyze alternate material technologies of book production that vastly impact the visual experience of reading. Moreover, I also consider the political reasons for these material changes to the book, including racial representation, so that my work simultaneously explores both the aesthetics and politics of printed text.

Unga vuxnas åsikter kring bokomslags formgivning : En enkät- och fokusgruppsundersökning / Young adults’ perceptions of book cover designs : A questionnaire and focus group survey

Beillon, Nathalie, Runeby, Fanny January 2012 (has links)
The reader’s first encounter with a book is through its cover. Therefore it is important that the cover is appealing and sends out the right message. According to book publishers, young adults (individuals aged 16–27 years) are hard to reach because of a lack of knowledge about what attracts them and because of the group’s diversity. The objective of this study is to show what young adults are attracted by in book cover designs, using an extensive questionnaire survey and two focus groups investigating their perceptions. The results show that young adults argue that a book cover must relate to the potential reader and corresponds to the reader’s identity. The typography should be easy to read. Photographic images are preferred and should depict the contents of the book. Unsaturated colors appeal to the target group – red and black seem to be the most popular colors, while pink is not preferred. Special effects (like varnish and foil) should be used with caution.

Återköp av Aktier : En jämförande studie mellan Sverige och Kina / Share Repurchases : A comparative study between Sweden and China

M. Zein, Aida, Pano, Ellie January 2011 (has links)
Share repurchases in Sweden has since legalization in 2000 gained momentum. Similar to other corporate events, there are studies that examine whether this affects the share price performance. With studies in the U.S. that measured excess returns of approximately 3,5 percent on the announcement day; Swedish buybacks, holding a tighter regulation is of interest to study. The Stockholm Stock Exchange regulation regarding reporting is also similar to the Stock Exchange in Hong Kong. Unlike most previous research using only the announcement of a buyback, where an actual repurchase cannot be assured, the stock exchanges in this study requires disclosure on a daily basis, which means that the announcement can be linked to an actual share repurchase. The study aims to examine how the stock markets in Stockholm and Hong Kong react to share repurchases. Thereby judge whether the notice gives a negative or positive effect. The problem formulation takes the following approach: Is there abnormal returns at the announcement of share repurchases in the Stockholm stock exchange and the Hong Kong stock exchange.  The following sub questions will further be explored: Are there differences between the size of the abnormal return and industry? Is there a correlation between the abnormal returns and corporate market-to-book value? The survey is conducted through an event study, measuring abnormal return during a window of ten days prior to the announcement day and ten days after. Repurchases are studied during the period 2000-03-10 until 2011-04-10 in order to cover the entire period since legalization in Sweden. The sectors used are: industrials, financials, consumer discretionaries and information technology. Furthermore a regression analysis consisting of the variables market-to-book, divided into low and high values, and abnormal return is constructed. Through a theoretical synthesis, consisting of previous research, signaling hypotheses, the efficient market hypothesis and agency theory, the empirical data is analyzed. The conducted study shows low positive abnormal returns (AAR) for both Stockholm and Hong Kong at 0,37 percent and 0,38 percent for the announcement day respectively with a certain significance days before the announcement. Small differences exist between sectors, with financials showing highest abnormal return and consumer discretionaries the lowest in the two markets. There is furthermore a significant value between high market-to-book values and negative abnormal returns.
