Marketing Book Collections: Creating Digital Displays Using Alma Analytics

Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year. Instead of waiting for patrons to find these new titles in Primo, East Tennessee State University decided to develop automated book sliders using data from Alma Analytics. These sliders are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This presentation will give participants a high-level overview of our workflow and the tools we used. I'll first go over Alma Analytics, defining collection scopes and required fields. Next, I'll cover our process of retrieving the data via API and formatting the data into a JSON array. The last section will cover the implementation of slider widgets and use of book covers.

Building a Better Book Widget: Using Alma Analytics to Automate New Book Discovery

Are we doing enough to market newly acquired book titles? Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year, both print and electronic. However, we rely on the expectation that users will periodically search our systems to discover newly acquired titles. Static lists and displays have been traditional marketing methods for libraries, but require tedious time and effort to maintain. Without a practical solution for an academic library, East Tennessee State University developed an automated process to generate book widgets utilizing data from Alma Analytics. These widgets are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This article outlines the development and implementation of these widgets. We also discuss the challenges we encountered, such as finding image covers and custom subject tagging.

[pt] Uma questão muito discutida atualmente na exegese bíblica diz respeito ao status do rolo dos assim chamados Doze Profetas Menores. Os estudiosos se dividem entre aqueles que entendem que os Doze devem ser considerados como uma obra literária unificada e aqueles que entendem que os escritos que integram esse rolo devem ser vistos como independentes em relação aos demais. Esta tese, visando oferecer uma contribuição para a discussão da problemática dos Doze, parte de uma apresentação do status quaestionis da pesquisa dos Doze, e, passando por um estudo do texto do Livro de Malaquias e sua organização, desemboca na análise da última perícope desse escrito, Ml 3.13-21, procurando verificar suas relações com os demais textos do conjunto dos Doze, em geral, e do Livro de Malaquias, em particular. Atenção especial é dada à comparação entre o texto de Ml 3.13-21 e o Livro de Joel, sobretudo com respeito à utilização feita em ambos os textos do motivo do dia de YHWH. O trabalho chega à conclusão de que a perícope estudada revela pontos de contato mais fortes com o restante do Livro de Malaquias do que com os demais textos do conjunto dos Doze, o que fala a favor da consideração do último integrante dos Doze como um escrito independente. / [en] An issue that causes much discussion nowadays in biblical exegesis is the status of the scroll of the so-called Twelve Minor Prophets. Scholars are divided among those who understand that the Twelve should be considered as a unified literary work and those who understand that the writings that are part of that scroll should be seen as independent in relation to the others. This thesis, looking at offering a contribution to the discussion of the matter of the Twelve, has its starting point in a presentation of the status quaestionis of the research of the Twelve, and, going through a study of the text of the Book of Malachi and its organization, leads to the analysis of the last pericope of that writing, Ml 3.13-21, seeking for verifying its relations to the other texts of the whole of the Twelve, in general, and of the Book of Malachi, in particular. Special attention is given to the comparison between the text of Ml 3.13-21 and the Book of Joel, specially concerning the use that both texts make of the motif of the day of YHWH. This work comes to the conclusion that the pericope studied reveals stronger contacts with the rest of the Book of Malachi than with other texts of the whole of the Twelve, something that speaks in favour of the consideration of the last component of the Twelve as an independent writing.

Diploma thesis The Book in the Electronic Age deals with print and electronic book. Theory of convergence has been described at the first theoretical part. According to historical evidence, convergence supposed, media be not ejected each other, but their content has just to be changed. Another mentioned theory is remediation. It consists in way which new medium releases. New medium determines itself by borrowing characters of old medium and this content is being transform in terms what the new one needs. The chapter pointing on a strong tradition and an influence of book is concerned in letter print like power instrument. The next part describes print and electronic environment and also includes their differences not only from the perspective of user. History and princip of hypertext is outlined and there has been mentioned hypertext's potential in e-books as well. The newest way of reading electronic books are mentioned there. The theme of failure of e-book is also involved. The question about future of book appears in whole thesis.

Cut Out of Place: The Geography and Legacy of Otto Ege's Broken Books

Otto Ege cut apart hundreds of medieval manuscripts during the first half of the twentieth century, claiming to do so to provide wider access to them. His destruction resulted in the loss of provenance, material history, and context of these manuscripts. Moreover, he made mistakes when identifying and dating the manuscript leaves he cut, and the loss of the bindings and front matter of the manuscripts makes it difficult to correct these. Much of the research concerning Ege focuses on his identity as a biblioclast, yet even scholars who denounce his book-cutting admit he allowed for places and people to have access to these manuscripts that otherwise would not. In this thesis, I examine how place impacted not only Ege’s motivations to distribute medieval manuscript leaves, but how place further impacts the accessibility of these leaves to people of lower socio-economic status. By mapping the locations of Ege’s Fifty Original Leaves of Medieval Manuscripts portfolios against the percentage of the population with college degrees, I make the argument that Ege’s portfolios are not as accessible to underrepresented populations as they could be, because most of these portfolios are located at university special collections and archives. I draw on social and geographic theory to show that non-college educated people are less likely to visit a college campus than those who attended college. I then explore current scholarship in archives and special collections to show the importance of public outreach programs and how bridging the gap between university archives and special collections and public libraries or other community institutions can make Ege’s portfolios more accessible to a broader audience. I conclude that while Ege did irreparable damage to the historical value of these medieval manuscript leaves, they do indeed still have value in their ability to allow more people to learn from and appreciate them. Ege’s vision of democratizing medieval book history may not have been perfect, but with the damage done, we can move in a more positive direction so as not to waste the potential benefits of these portfolios.

“Far är stark, mor är rar” En textanalys av barnböcker ur ett genusperspektiv

The purpose of this study is to explore how girls and boys are portrayed in children’s literature that is specifically aimed towards children in the preschool age. This is a qualitative text analysis, partly combined with some elements of quantitative data. Through an interview questionnaire sent to preschool teachers at different preschools, seven books in the genre humanized animals, were chosen and analyzed from a gender perspective. The analysis is conducted through a theoretical framework including gender theory with correlated concepts. The intent of this study has not been to identify books that follow stereotypical gender norms, and we do not argue that literature should be completely gender neutral. However, we believe that if girls and boys being portrayed in a variety of ways will contribute to more children feeling safe with their own identity and it will also provide them with a broader world view. We had a thought that a certain characterization of girls and boys in the chosen books, i.e. that girls are portrayed as sweet and nice while boys are portrayed as tough and mischievous. The results of this study show that this is partly true but that boys’ characteristics tend to vary more and in different ways than girls’ characteristics do. With that said, we concluded that in general, the chosen books were more gender neutral than our initial expectation.

With All Due Modesty: The Selected Letters of Fanny Goldstein is an annotated edition of the correspondence of Fanny Goldstein (1895–1961), librarian, social activist, and founder of Jewish Book Week. Goldstein’s accomplishments include building a significant collection of Judaica for the Boston Public Library; compiling some of the earliest bibliographies of Jewish literature in English; evaluating manuscripts for publishers; writing book reviews; and lecturing and writing on a wide range of subjects related to Jews and Judaism. The purpose of the edition is to provide a picture of Goldstein’s life as a Jew, a woman, a librarian, and a social activist and in so doing, to contribute to a more complete understanding of Boston’s Jewish community in the first half of the twentieth century. I have included in the edition both incoming and outgoing letters with a wide range of correspondents, including Charles Angoff, Mary Antin, Isaac Asimov, Alice Stone Blackwell, Felix Frankfurter, Molly Picon, Ellery Sedgwick, and Friderike Zweig. The letters span the years from 1930 to 1960. The edition includes extensive annotation based on Goldstein’s newspaper and magazine articles, pamphlets, book reviews, and other writings; hundreds of Goldstein’s letters not published here; accounts published in the Jewish press and the mainstream press; and correspondence neither written nor received by Goldstein but bearing on her life and work.
