[pt] FOTOLIVRO COMO MONTAGEM: FENÔMENOS DE JUSTAPOSIÇÃO EISENSTEINIANA / [en] PHOTOBOOK AS MONTAGE: EISENSTEINIAN JUXTAPOSITION PHENOMENA

ANA PAULA VITORIO DA COSTA 09 December 2020 (has links)
[en] Books particularized by the importance and predominance of photography are often defined as photographic books or photobooks. They are phenomena characterized mainly by the way they relate photographic images to each other and to other sign systems (verbal text, painting, drawing, typography, graphic design, etc.), and by the way they explore the materiality of the book. In our thesis, montage is the principle by which photographic books are built and structured. It is the main process regulating the relations between the parties of these works. Four important Brazilian photographic books, published in the second half of the 20th century, are observed in this research. They are Viagem pelo Fantástico [Journey into the Fantastic], by Boris Kossoy (1971); Amazônia, by Claudia Andujar and George Love (1978); São Paulo Anotações [São Paulo Notes], by George Love (1982); and Silent Book, by Miguel Rio Branco (1997). We describe and analyze these works according to Eisenstein s theory. We verify that, as a principle, the montage can be observed structuring these photobooks in several levels. Each photographic image works as montage and, in turn, it participates in the juxtapositions on the pages, diptychs and triptychs. Sequenced, the parts defining the work act on each other obeying similar principles at new scales. This process occurs successively and produces the work as an image (in the sense proposed by Eisenstein).

Electronic Books: An Overview of the First Two Generations.

Doman, Todd O. 01 December 2001 (has links) (PDF)
The electronic text reading device, or e-book, is an idea that has reached the implementation stage. Technology has only recently made possible the production of a device to challenge the printed book’s dominance as the media for information transmission. These microprocessor-based devices are attempts to exceed the limitations of printed texts while retaining their strengths. Two generations of these devices, and the companies that created them, have reached the marketplace. This thesis provides a short history of electronic text readers and gives an overview of the first and second generations. The issues that will affect the adoption of the e-book as the dominant media for the transmission of texts are discussed. The primary objections to the e-book’s replacement of the book are durability, ease of use and clarity. With these concerns addressed by improvement of the underlying technology, the e-book will replace the majority of the printed books in the marketplace.

“The Escapades of Cat & Dog” The Process of Creating a Children’s Book from Start to Finish

Simmons, Cosette 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The focus of this thesis project was to learn and understand the amount of work that goes into children’s book illustration, as well as bringing the story of another’s to life. “The Escapades of Cat & Dog” was written by my grandfather, George Petrella, to tell the story of my mother and her sibling’s pets going on kooky adventures. The script was given to me back in 2017-2018 not to long after my grandmother, Jane Petrella, passed away due to cancer. The result consists of a 36 page 9 by 9 inch fully illustrated book intended to be the first in an episodic storytelling series similar to “Clifford the Big Red Dog” by Norman Bridwell. The story follows Duke, a charismatic and carefree border collie who loves to explore with his best friend Ruddy, an uptight and serious orange tabby who would rather stay indoors than exit the comfort of his home. The first half of the year consisted of brainstorming and sketching down concepts for the designs of the two characters and deciding the visual direction of the project. The second half consisted of illustrating the pages and formatting everything properly for printing. There are still a few minor things to fix but with a little more time I hope to present this book to my grandfather and work to get it published.

A Study of Nephite, Lamanite, and Jaredite Governmental Institutions and Policies as Portrayed in The Book of Mormon

Cazier, Donald Arthur 01 January 1972 (has links) (PDF)
Nephite government was essentially theocratic, with both the monarchy and reign of the judges paralleling the similar institutions of the ancient Israelites. Ultimate political authority resided in the prophet. The laws were given by the Lord, and the principle of popular consent was recognized. The role of government was primarily national defense and the punishment of crime, not social reform.Lamanite government was monarchal and despotic, with notable exceptions when the nation was converted to the gospel. The Jaredites theoretically lived under a theocratic monarchy, but intrigue, tyranny, and oppression were the rule rather than the exception. In all three cases, righteousness was more important to the well-being and security of the people than the form of government. The greatest danger to free institutions was the rise of secret combinations with public tolerance and support. The authors of the Book of Mormon wrote in part to warn their readers of the dangers of such combinations and to enable them to profit from the political experiences of their predecessors on the American continent.

A Textual Comparison of the Isaiah Passages in The Book of Mormon With the Same Passages in the St. Mark's Isaiah Scroll of the Dead Sea Community

Ham, Wayne 01 January 1961 (has links) (PDF)
The Book of Mormon contains twenty-one chapters of the Book of Isaiah: two through fourteen, twenty-nine, and forty-eight through fifty-four. The language is primarily that of the King James Version with some variations. The King James Version itself has been translated from the Massoretic Hebrew Text. It is a fair assumption that the variations in the Book of Mormon represent an older, more accurate text than the Massoretic Text.Textual critics are anxious to find ancient texts and versions of the scriptures in the hope that some of these texts may contain readings closer to the original than does the Massoretic Text thereby avoiding some of the errors of transmission to which the Massoretic Text has succumbed during its long history. It is generally expected among believers in the Book of Mormon that the variations in the Book of Mormon will be supported by comparison with the ancient versions and ancient Hebrew texts of Isaiah.

Desert Journey: A Religious Dance-Drama and an Evaluation of its Effect on a Selected Latter-Day Saint Audience

Hatch, Frank W. 01 January 1965 (has links) (PDF)
The Holy scriptures abound in references to the use of dance as a means of worship. It would seem that there is a need to understand how present day members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feel in regard to the kind of dancing referred to in the Scriptures. This study will be concerned with the production of "Desert Journey," a religious dance-drama depicting an episode from the Book of Mormon. A record of "Desert Journey" will be made with a movement notation system adapted from Motation, an architectual movement notation system developed by Laurence Halprin of San Francisco."Desert Journey" will be presented to a selected group of Latter-day Saint dance directors attending the 1965 June Quarterly Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their responses and attitudes toward the production as a means for religious worship will be determined with a questionnaire. The information gained from the production of "Desert Journey" and the responses to the questionnaires will be used to make suggestions for the effective production of religious dance-dramas in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A Study of Some Textual Variations in the Book of Mormon Comparing the Original and the Printer's Manuscripts and the 1830, the 1837, and the 1840 Editions

Larson, Stanley R. 01 January 1974 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is a study of textual variations in the two manuscripts and the first three editions of the Book of Mormon. Successive collations of each of these were made against the text of the first edition. From these collations some 427 specific textual variations were selected for inclusion in the thesis. The research disclosed that some genuine corrections as well as editorial revisions were made by Joseph Smith in 1837 and 1840. However, it was also concluded that some alterations of the text arose from accidental causes. The most significant contribution of this study was that both the Original Manuscript and the Printer's Manuscript contain valuable new manuscript readings which were unfortunately corrupted by scribal or printer's errors. These readings from the manuscripts eliminate inconsistencies, clarify meanings, correct errors, restore lost words, or otherwise present a super text. Because these genuine readings went unnoticed in 1837 and 1840, the process of restoring them to the text has not been completed.
