The Formation of Teacher's Belief: A Case Study on English Teachers outside the Formal Educational System

Unknown Date (has links)
Having children learning outside the formal educational system for academic purposes has been a trend among Taiwanese parents. In Taiwan, although formal English instruction is provided from the third grade in formal schools, many children start to learn English before the age and learn English outside the school time at and after the age at informal education institutes. The purpose of the study is to investigate the role of the formation of beliefs as teachers of two English teachers outside the formal educational system in Taiwan. This study adopted a qualitative case study method. The participants were two English teachers with rich experience of teaching students aged from 2 to 16 at various informal educational institutes. Data were collected through five semi-structure in-depth interviews with each of the participants. The collected information included each of the participant’s: (1) FL learning experiences, (2) beliefs as a FL learner, (3) English teaching experience, (4) teacher training, and (5) beliefs as an English teacher. The findings suggest that the two teachers’ beliefs as FL learners, teacher training, and teaching experience all contributed to the formation of their beliefs as English teachers. However, the teachers would make teaching decisions inconsistent with their beliefs as FL learners. The underlying reasons behind the inconsistencies were their perceived problems in teaching contexts and the contradiction between their beliefs as FL learners and as English teachers. In the informal educational institutes, the English teachers’ perceived problems which constrained the realization of their beliefs as FL learners were about: (1) students’ learning context, (2) curriculum, (3) school policy, (4) students’ conditions, and (5) parents’ expectation. Finally, these pedagogical implications and suggestions are served as a reference for educational policy makers, informal educational institutes, and parents.

DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE ABROAD? O GÊNERO ENTREVISTA DE EMPREGO EM CURSOS LIVRES DE LÍNGUAS / DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE ABROAD ? THE JOB INTERVIEW GENRE IN PRIVATE ENGLISH COURSES

Marzari, Gabriela Quatrin 22 July 2005 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Researches on English teachers of private language courses evolving issues related to the teaching education as well as to the teaching practice (Gervai, 1996; Chimim, 2003) and focusing on the constitution of these professionals identity have pointed out the lack of criteria explicitly defined for those teachers selection. As a consequence, unlike other teaching contexts, the teachers profile of private language courses comprises teachers distinctively qualified, being the formal education in Letras only a feature among others possible. Concerning this profile, along the study, I intend to: 1) investigate the role of the job interview while an instrument of English teachers selection at private language courses in Santa Maria, based on the interviewers conceptions on the genre; 2) identify the market equirements in relation to the English teachers profile required nowadays by the contexts investigated. Thus, I intend to demonstrate the criteria considered indispensable for the selection of a given candidate as stated by the interviewers discourse. The development of this study comes from the presupposition that, being taken as an instrument of English teachers selection, the job interview points to the real market needs, which are materialized in its participants discourse. Therefore, an analysis on the interviewers representations concerning the discourse genre job interview has allowed me to identify the topics discussed along the event, analyze the roles assumed by its participants, and define the English teachers profile usually absorbed by four private language courses in Santa Maria.

The present work, which had as support the beliefs of an English teacher as well as her students’, both involved in a public school context, aims at characterizing this teacher’s oral proficiency level and the use of the target language during the verbal interaction (teacher-student and student-teacher) in her teaching practice, seeking (re)definition of her profile as an ESL (English as Second Language) teacher. These issues are considered fundamental due to the evidence in many researches (PINHEL, 2004; GARCIA, 2001; CONSOLO, 1990) that the majority of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers have a low level of oral proficiency, restricted, in most cases, to the oral production of some commands in the target language, resulting in a frustrating and inefficient learning process to their students. Thus, this investigation is characterized as a research of ethnographic and interactive analysis traditions, having as well a quantitative focus, and constitutes a case study. The teacher who participated in this study has been teaching in a public school for 14 years. The data collected suggest that this teacher’s conception of language and teaching and learning process concerning grammar, strengthened by adverse factors that can be found in the context in question, is coherent to the limited oral proficiency presented by her when submitted to an oral test and to the insufficient use of the target language during the teacher-student and student-teacher verbal interaction. It is relevant to emphasize that a change related to the oral ability will not show results if the teacher in question does not renew her language learning and teaching conceptions, and continues using her mother language to the detriment of the target one which could be introduced little by little in this context, in a continuous way, producing a favorable environment to the teaching of a foreign language... Negotiating the Place of Spirituality in English Language Teaching: A Case Study in an Indonesian EFL Teacher Education Program

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation delves into some EFL stakeholders' understanding of spiritual identities and power relations associated with these identities as performed in an undergraduate EFL teacher education program at a Christian university in Indonesia. This study is motivated by an ongoing debate over the place of spirituality, especially Christianity, in ELT. In this project, religions are considered to be windows through which one's spirituality is viewed and expressed. Spiritually associated relations of power indicate discrepancies due to positioning of one person committed to a spiritual view in relation to those having similar or different spiritual views. The purpose of exploring spiritually associated identities and power relations is to provide empirical evidence which supports the following arguments. The integration of spirituality in ELT, or lack thereof, can be problematic. More importantly, however, spirituality can be enriching for some EFL teachers and students alike, and be presented together with critical ELT. To explore the complexity of power relations associated with some EFL stakeholders' spiritual identities, I analyzed data from classroom observations, four focus group discussions from February to April 2014, and individual interviews with 23 teachers and students from February to September 2014. Findings showed that Christian and non-Christian English teachers had nuanced views regarding the place of prayer in ELT-related activities, professionalism in ELT, and ways of negotiating spiritually associated power relations in ELT contexts. Students participating in this study performed their spiritual identities in ways that can be perceived as problematic (e.g., by being very dogmatic or evangelical) or self-reflexive. Classroom observations helped me to see more clearly how Christian English teachers interacted with their students from different religious backgrounds. In one class, a stimulating dialogue seemed to emerge when a teacher accommodated both critical and religious views to be discussed. This project culminates in my theorization of the praxis of critical spiritual pedagogy in ELT. Central to this praxis are (a) raising the awareness of productive power and power relations associated with spiritual identities; (b) learning how to use defiant discourses in negotiating spiritually associated power relations; and (c) nurturing self-reflexivity critically and spiritually. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2014

It is a study that seeks to understand the identity aspects of eight English teachers of the public education of the state of Goiás in Goiânia. It has as theoretical support the cultural theories of identity with the Systemic-Functional Linguistics discourse analysis of, consolidated with the Appraisal System, specifically, its sub-system of Attitude. It is important to note that Systemic-Functional Linguistics considers that it is not possible to do discourse analysis without considering the context of culture and context of situation. These contexts were essential for understanding teachers' identities. Thus in the analysis both theories were used. The Arguments that justify a choice for the profession and evaluations about teacher’s performance in classroom composed the textual corpora, which were generated through semi-structured and transcribed interviews. The discourse analysis of each teacher's speech was based on these interviews. The analysis effort was carried out to search, identify and understand significative aspects, constitutive of the identities of the teachers when uttering their speeches about a choice of the profession and their teaching activities. After the discourse analysis of each participant, it was verified that it had in common in order to understand if the researched teachers shared some identity aspect among the shared ones, it was verified that they evaluate themselves to teach, but that this process is not materialized by factors that are beyond their controls, leaving them uncomfortable with the students' non-learning. From this incongruity between being prepared to teach and not achieved, signing, the participants' identities were interpreted. The result showed that the identity aspects of these teachers are in accordance with the current configuration of society, that is, it is an off-center, fragmented, contradictory identity. / A temática principal desta pesquisa é a identidade docente.

English as a Foreign language in Brazil and Sweden : A comparative study

Sklar, Fabiana January 2009 (has links)
In Brazil, English is studied from first grade of elementary school. For some reason after eleven years of study, students in general have problems communicating orally and in writing. Swedish students, on the other hand, seem to be able to communicate quite proficiently in English, even though it is also considered to be foreign language learning. The purpose of this comparative study is to discover what differs in the Brazilian and Swedish learning and teaching that makes the Swedish results superior. The purpose was to compare English learning as a foreign language in Sweden and in Brazil, and questionnaires were distributed to teacher and students. Of the many possibilities raised as hypotheses for the effective English learning in Sweden, teacher’s educational background, working hours per week, number of students per teacher, were found to be more problematic in Brazil, according to the teachers’ questionnaire. When it comes to students, it appears that Brazilian students show a lack of commitment to their learning tasks and awareness of the importance of learning English. In addition, several social aspects have to be taken into account when judging the educational situation of a country, but the importance of a good education can never be overlooked.

[en] EXPLORATORY PRACTITIONERS LEARNING TO LIVE TOGETHER AT SCHOOL / [pt] PRATICANTES EXPLORATÓRIOS APRENDENDO A VIVER JUNTOS NA ESCOLA

MARA REGINA DE ALMEIDA GRIFFO 10 June 2020 (has links)
[en] This dissertation, inserted in the field of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006, 2013), aims at building understandings about the English teachers work developed in the early years of schooling, about the school as a place of affection and the learners participation in the research. The teacher and the learners, children aged 10-11, worked together to reflect on classroom life in a private school in Rio de Janeiro. With an emphasis on collaboration, this study is characterized as qualitative, interpretative and interdisciplinary (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006), as well as based on the principles of Exploratory Practice (ALLWRIGHT; HANKS, 2009; MILLER, 2010; MILLER; CUNHA, 2017; HANKS, 2017), a kind of practitioner research (COCHRAN-SMITH; LYTLE, 2009). The data was generated during regular school hours under the formal consent of the seven participants and their legal guardians. The set of data includes Potentially Exploitable Pedagogical Activities (BARRETO et al., 2019) and audio recorded exploratory talks. By integrating pedagogical practices and research, the activities were used as opportunities to stimulate reflections during the conversations. The themes that emerged focused on the learners understandings about the English teacher, the school, and their participation in the research. The discursive analysis of the transcription of the exploratory talk has as its central point the evaluation based on Appraisal Theory (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; VIAN JR., 2009; NOBREGA, 2009), a theoretical framework inscribed in Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1994). The analysis of the lexical-grammatical choices in the students discourse, focusing on the sub-systems of affect, judgment and appreciation points towards the participants reflexive maturity, as they express their beliefs and emotions about the context of teaching and learning English. The detailed discourse analysis contributes to the enrichment of practitioner research, leading to further reflections and the recognition of the teacher and the seven students as producers of local understandings, as subjects-agents.

SEEKING A BALANCE: THE IMPACT OF FOSTERING AUTHORIAL EMPATHY ON TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

Brett, Aidan January 2018 (has links)
This study reports on the impact of the Authorial Empathy Scale (AES), a tool designed to measure responses to literature that balance attention both to authors’ aesthetic choices and to empathetic engagement with the narrative world, on teachers’ instructional practices and students’ written and spoken responses. The research is guided by the following research questions: (1) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape the teaching practice of two secondary ELA teachers? (2) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape secondary students’ responses to texts? Data consist of stimulated-recall interviews and discussion transcripts of teachers and students that were analyzed for the goals, tools, and sources of their decisions. The major findings are the use of the AES seemed to facilitate a common approach among teachers and students for generating more balanced responses to texts. However, sustaining the balanced responses faced challenges in the form of institutional rubrics, IRE discussion patterns, and the specific demands of writing tasks. Students who evidenced greater mastery of the conventions of academic writing tended to generate more authorially empathetic responses to texts. During the Authorial Empathy unit, students tended to engage in more extensive and collaborative talk turns during discussion. The results make clear the importance for teachers to select texts, tasks, and tools that support the use of the AES in guiding students to respond with authorial empathy. / Literacy & Learners
