Submarine mass movement processes on the North Sea Fan as interpreted from the 3D seismic data

Gafeira Gonçalves, Joana January 2010 (has links)
This research has been focused on the characterisation and analysis of the deposits of large-scale mass movement events that shaped the North Sea Fan since the Mid-Pleistocene. Located at the mouth of the cross-shelf trough Norwegian Channel, the North Sea Fan is one of the largest through-mouth fans in the glaciated european margin with an area of approximately 142,000 km2. Submarine mass movement processed have occurred intermittenrly throughout the Quarternary history of the North Sea Fan, related to recurrent climate-related episodes of growth and retreat of the ice sheets. These processes can transport large amounts of sediment from the upper shelf up to the abyssal basins, playing an important role on the evolution of continental margins and can also reporesnet major geological hazards. This thesis uses mainly 3D seismic data to investigate the external geometry and internal structure of large-scale mass movement deposits. The high spatial resolution provided by the 3D seismic data has allowed a detailed geomorpholocial analysis of these deposits, This study involved the interpretation of the seismic data and the detailed pickling of key reflectors followed by tge extraction of both horizon and window-based seismic attributes. Digital elevation models of the key reflectors and their seismic attribute maps were then transferred to a geographical information system (GIS) where they were interactively interpreted using spatial analysis tools and the full visualisation potential of the software. The outcomes of this study highlight the importance of detailed horizon pickling and interactice interpretation followed by spatial analysis and visualisation in GIS environment. The identification of acoustic patterns within deposits that are normally described from 2D seismic as chaotic or acoustically transparent emphasizes the potential of detailed analysis of 3D seismic data. It gives an example of how this type of data can provide new insights into the mechanisms and processes associated with mass movements. In particular, amplitude and RMS amplitude maps provide remarkable detailed information of internal deformation structures whereas slope, shaded-relief and thickness maps allowed detailed characterisation of the external geometry. Various types of kinematic indicators can be recognized within the mass movement deposits through combined seismic analysis and detaield morphological mapping.

Fanfiction och folkbibliotek : Föreställningar, förutsättningar, och framtiden / Fanfiction and the Public Library : Conceptions, Conditions, and the Future

Lundqvist, Kee January 2017 (has links)
Fan fiction has emerged as an area of interest for public libraries as the reading of it grows more widespread and visible. This study aims to offer an analysis of the practice that furthers the knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon and its perceived benefits for its readers in a way that allows librarians to better work with it. This mixed methods qualitative study builds on an partial overview of activities related to fan fiction on Swedish public libraries, 25 semi-structured interviews with both librarians and fan fiction readers, two small surveys concerning librarians’ knowledge of the phenomenon, and a few additional secondary sources in the form of previous research and ethnographic data not collected especially for the purposes of this thesis. In a thematic analysis the ways in which fan fiction readers and librarians make sense of the phenomenon and its perceived benefits to its readers are identified and formulated, and compared both to each other and the general reading discourses identified and thematized by Catherine Sheldrick Ross. Drawing on the ways in which different discourses enables or prohibits certain actions, it is suggested that fan fiction can be usefully understood as an extended reading of the source material, as a genre in its own right, and as a more accessible reading option. Each of these discourses suggests various ways in which public libraries might work with fan fiction. However, both the understanding formulated by librarians in interviews and the fan fiction related activities already organized at Swedish public libraries draw almost exclusively on the discourse of fan fiction as extended reading, overlooking aspects of genre and accessibility and the potential activities suggested by these discourses. Paying attention to all three aspects would not only make space for the possibility of different and at times more suitable activities, but might potentially also improve the library services offered to users in general.

Sub for More

Lee, Chelsea 01 January 2017 (has links)
This written thesis unpacks the thoughts and motivations behind the decisions I have made in my artistic practice that have ultimately culminated in my M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition: Sub for More. By merging images of my own work as well as internet sourced images of the culture that drives my work, I have created a platform to begin to understand my experience during graduate school. This text examines and explores my belief in the inherent power in pop culture, my obsession with fame, celebrity, and my self-identity as a participant in current pop-culture.

Kjellander Hellqvist, Eva January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation aims to find further understanding of how people with special interest in a certain artist utilise music and the fact that they are fans in their everyday lives. I have opted to study two fans included in each group selected for this study: Kiss, Status Quo and Lasse Stefanz, one male and one female fan belonging to each respective group. I have worked according to grounded theory as a method, and through an analysis of their musical life stories, I have attempted to identify why they became fans and how them being fans has affected them in their lives. Four categories, fandom as: a marker of identity, socialisation, a form of self therapy and a pseudo religion and the core category authenticity usage show the results of the study. The categories show that to a large extent it all comes down to the musical identity of these people, i.e. the identity of being a fan, and their experiences of being fans. They have been socialised into a specific genre, which has meant increased interest in a specific artist. Family, media and friends have all played a part in this socialisation. The informants have developed cultural competence as concerns their idols, although they have also gained the subcultural capital resources required in order to come across as credible fans. Various kinds of experiences offer meaning and nourish the fans. Security and stability in everyday lives are also contributing factors to them being fans and the music offers them something that they are unable to acquire from elsewhere. They have established different strategies in order to be able to be fans, one of these being legitimacy. A vital part of this legitimacy consists in them viewing the bands as authentic, i.e. important.

Characterization of Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Performance of Bladeless Fans

Ang Li (7046483) 14 August 2019 (has links)
<div>Bladeless fans are well known for their unique shape and efficient performance, which have a great impact on the fan industry. At present, there are few studies on the bladeless fan and the research on the improvement of fan design is a lack. Therefore, the study on the performance of the bladeless fan with different design is the main purpose of this thesis. </div><div>In the present study, a bladeless fan prototype is created and studied by numerical simulations. When characterizing the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performances of the bladeless fan, the entire fan prototype, including wind channel, base, rotor and stator, is adopted; when investigating the influence of the wind channel's geometric parameters, only wind channel is considered in simulations. The influence of the slit width, the height of the cross-section, the slit location and the profile of the cross-section are studied. </div><div><br></div><div>It is found that the flow outside the bladeless fan consists of the air blown out from the wind channel and entrained from the back and side of the fan. The air entrained from the side is the main source of flow rate increase. As for the aeroacoustic performance, the rotor and stator inside the base are the predominated source of the noise generated by the bladeless fan. </div><div>The performances of the bladeless fan are very sensitive to the geometric details of the wind channel. The generated noise always increases as the wind strength improves. The slit width of the wind channel has the greatest impact. With the slit moves away from the leading edge, the wind produced by the bladeless fan becomes more powerful and the noise becomes louder. The cross-sectional height of 4cm has the best aerodynamic performance but the generated noise is a little larger than other designs. The profile of the cross-section shows insignificant influence on the performances. </div>

Avaliações multivariada, geoestatística e de medidas repetidas de um experimento sob delineamento sistemático tipo \"leque\" / Multivariate, geostatistical and repeated measures analyses of an experiment under a systematic fan design

Teodoro, João Vítor 12 July 2016 (has links)
Forest experiments which study the spacing effects should adopt different delineations from those conventionally used, due to the great demand for experimental area of conventional delineations, the systematic fan design is the most viable way to perform this type of test. In this design, the trees are arranged in several concentric circles, so that various spacings are generated, however, with no possibility for randomization. For this type of experiment, statistical analyses modeling the spatial behavior of dependence between the elements are conventionally performed using, in addition to the variable observed, the coordinates of the observations. Thus, a function called semivariogram that explains the spatial dependence is modeled, enabling the creation of a map of trends called kriging. In this paper, the variables of height, bole diameter, treetop diameter, area and its cylindrical volume of trees Canafistula, are treated at six months for height and at 13, 25 and 37 months for all variables after planting canafístula seedlings (Peltophorum dubium) in an experiment carried out in Mato Grosso do Sul. In addition to the geostatistical analysis, a multivariate analysis is also performed, aiming to relate the variables by correlation measures and performing the analysis of the main, grouping and discriminating components. Furthermore, the repeated measures analysis is performed aiming to evaluate the behavior of these variables over the periods. Finally, some combined ways to assess and interpret the results are presented in order to relate the previous analyses, calculating new key components for the variables, by period, performing the geostatistical analysis of the main components and evaluating the behavior of these components over time.

Aerodynamic and tip clearance flow control of an axial fan obtained with rotational molding

Azzam, Tarik 18 February 2018 (has links)
Nowadays, the manufacture of turbomachinery is conditioned by more and more restrictive rules. The industrial challenge for researchers has to consider optimal solutions to reduce sources of energy loss, instability and noise, particularly the tip clearance flow (leakage flow rate). Preliminary actions have been developed at Arts & ParisTech on rotational molding process used for the automobile cooling axial fan. The idea of this work is to use the hollow shape induced by rotational molding process in order to exploit it in the control of tip clearance flow through rotary steady air injection. For this, the shroud ring is composed of injection holes oriented in such away to reduce both of leakage flow rate and the torque. In this work, the thesis focuses on three parts. The first concerns the build of the fan by rotational molding process. The second concerns the experimental study carried out in the ISO 5801 test bench. This study involves the realization of drive system dedicated to rotary steady air injection, metrology for performance determination and the characterization of the near wake axial velocity. The third part deals with the numerical modeling of efficient experimental conditions, then the extrapolation of work towards high injection rates. For this latter, it is possible to cancel leakage flow rate with a considerable gain of the torque thus putting the fan in autorotation.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T20:22:46Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Carlos Eduardo Capestrani.pdf: 468348 bytes, checksum: 5ebf0a176aa7f13c9c472a3639f8d4fc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-20 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / Objective: This text intends to analyze the behavior of the soccer fan clubs parties that express the passion, joy and the aggressiveness of the soccer fan. Methods: A participant observation of the Torcida Tricolor Independente has been done in 2005 and 2006 in order to understand the group s actions through the point of view of the soccer fan, escaping from the stereotype of delinquents created by the media. The selection of this period of time was due to being the first two years that followed the official return of the soccer fan clubs to the soccer stadiums after ten years of the prohibition of its activities, with the commitment of not acting with violence, but only to party. Conclusions: With this participant observation I perceived that the soccer fans were really only partying. They were celebrating the victory of their team, the aggression of the rival soccer fans, the confrontation with the police, in short everything was a reason to celebrate. When facing the results of the participant observation with the theoretical referential, I came to the conclusion that the soccer fans, when into groups, temporarily transgress the social rules, by using violence, soccer passion and indignation towards the daily life as reasons to party / Objetivos: Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o comportamento das torcidas organizadas sobre a ótica das festas que expressam a paixão, alegria e a agressividade do torcedor.
