"Textual glory holes" : genre and community in fan kink memes

Wall, Mary Amanda, 1985- 12 November 2010 (has links)
“Textual Glory Holes” examines a particular online fan community called a kink meme, in which fans exchange sexually-charged fanfiction as gifts. In this essay, I argue that, not only does the genre of fanfiction help to create and sustain the concept of kink, but that kink as a category is an interpellation of, experimentation with, and performance of the eroticism of genre in fanfiction. Furthermore, the kink meme community constitutes itself by performing this fannish erotics for each other in fiction and in sexualized feedback, resulting in a community that embraces the pleasures of this performance but sometimes distances itself from the power and political implications of the performance. Moments when fans do not distance themselves from this erotics of genre—one of unearthing and understanding diverse and diffuse pleasures—hold the potential to become what Audre Lorde calls “creative energy empowered,” a shared pleasure that can “lessen the threat of difference.” / text

TORIC VARIETIES AND COBORDISM

Wilfong, Andrew 01 January 2013 (has links)
A long-standing problem in cobordism theory has been to find convenient manifolds to represent cobordism classes. For example, in the late 1950's, Hirzebruch asked which complex cobordism classes can be represented by smooth connected algebraic varieties. This question is still open. Progress can be made on this and related problems by studying certain convenient connected algebraic varieties, namely smooth projective toric varieties. The primary focus of this dissertation is to determine which complex cobordism classes can be represented by smooth projective toric varieties. A complete answer is given up to dimension six, and a partial answer is described in dimension eight. In addition, the role of smooth projective toric varieties in the polynomial ring structure of complex cobordism is examined. More specifically, smooth projective toric varieties are constructed as polynomial ring generators in most dimensions, and evidence is presented suggesting that a smooth projective toric variety can be chosen as a polynomial generator in every dimension. Finally, toric varieties with an additional fiber bundle structure are used to study some manifolds in oriented cobordism. In particular, manifolds with certain fiber bundle structures are shown to all be cobordant to zero in the oriented cobordism ring.

Fan fictions eller adaptioner? : Om Amy Heckerlings spelfilm Clueless (1996) och Debra White Smiths roman Amanda (2006) mot Jane Austens roman Emma (1815)

Sundqvist, Jill January 2014 (has links)

Analysis of fan blade attachment

Shingu, Patrick, Garcia Cabrera, Miguel January 2014 (has links)
This thesis work is based on the analysis of a fan blade attachment whereby a complete 3D model is presented by a partner company. The acceptability of a new design regarding the mechanical loads consisting of dividing the hub into two parts instead of using a solid hub is studied. From the model some critical parameters for the attachment of the blade with respect to the stresses are chosen such as the rotational speed, fillet size of the blade and the neck size of the blade. Parametric studies of these parameters are carried out in order to suggest the new design. Bearing in mind that a safety factor of 2 is the prerequisite, based on the analysis performed on ANSYS Workbench, it is suggested from the preliminary design that the axial fan can operate in two specific scenarios consisting of a rotational speed of 1771 rpm and a rotational speed of 1594 rpm. Using this set of parameters, a suggestion is drawn up on the blade fillet which will give lower stress. Blade fillet size of 30 to 35mm is recommended while a size of 45mm is recommended on the neck of the blade. A modal analysis is performed in order to find at what frequency will the model be vibrating and a lowest and critical frequency of 16.8 Hz is obtained. Finally, a fatigue analysis of some interesting areas is performed in order to determine the numbers of cycles before fatigue failure occur. It is recommended to use the rotational speed since these speeds have offered a High Cycle Fatigue results.

The Internet World of Fan Fiction

Herzing, Melissa Jean 01 January 2005 (has links)
Fan fiction, the most popular creative outlet for fans, allows the amateur writer an opportunity to be published and receive immediate feedback from peers. As educators, we can learn from the fan communities as they participate in online activities, especially fan fiction. Students are more likely to embrace entertaining and creative assignments. And since much of the world is linked to the Internet in one way or another, we can allow students an opportunity to not only improve their writing skills, but also enhance their knowledge of the Internet and its capabilities. My study included online interviews with fan fiction writers and readers as well as the examination of fan fiction texts and websites. By exploring this relatively unknown genre of writing and reading, I believe teachers of composition can use fan fiction to their advantage by encouraging students to write creatively using subject matter that interests them in some way.

Faktor Slash: charakteristika a typy slash fan fiction / Slash Factor: Characteristics and Varieties of Slash Fan Fiction

Cupalová, Lucie January 2014 (has links)
Lucie Cupalová - Master's Thesis The Slash Factor: Characteristics and Varieties of Slash Fan Fiction Abstract The aim of the thesis is to discuss specific characteristics of slash fan fiction, both as a subgenre of fan fiction and as a literary and social phenomenon. These characteristics are summarised as the "slash factor" of "slash texts". The beginning of the theoretical part focuses on the history and development of (slash) fan fiction, its various definitions and its role as a specific genre in literature. It summarises the basic premises and principles of fan fiction and explains them on slash fan fiction in particular. Sedgwick's homosocial - homosexual continuum in society is discussed, as well as its understanding and application on same-sex interactions, and several reasons for the reading and writing of slash fan fiction and its appeal are suggested. The main part of the thesis analyses actual slash fan fiction in three different fandoms: Harry Potter, Sherlock (Holmes), and Nightrunners. Each of them offers a different set of characters and slash tropes. Similarities and differences are sought in the stories written in different fandoms. Moreover, the Nightrunner series is analysed as an example of professionally published "slash text" which already features a gay couple as the main...

Zandonadi, Raquel Santos. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Starting from the premise that young people become more and more virtual and increasingly read and write in cyberspace, this dissertation thinks about practices that seek to collaborate so that teaching is not alien to the diversity of languages and cultures of the technological world, and that is directed to think the genres as social practices within this young and digital universe. Allied to this, we believe that a proposal of education based on the dialogism needs, necessarily, to consider the voices of the students, since they are subjects and are constituted of identities and preferences. For this, our proposal focuses on the discursive genre fanfiction (fan writing), constructed from a television series chosen by the students. When inserting the genre as a work proposal with writing, in the 9th grade of a municipal school in Praia Grande, we intend to collaborate so that the students develop linguistic and discursive skills and that, as a consequence, develop a critical and analytical posture in face of this diversity of texts that the Internet offers. In addition, it is our goal to reflect on the construction of the genre in cyberspace - taken as a massive transmissive cultural phenomenon when considering its production and reception - as well as the involvement of young people in this new scenario of literature and textual production. From the production of fanfictions, we also analyze how the students' discourses were architected in their statements, in terms of thematic content, compositional form or style. We base our analysis on the studies of Bakhtin's circle, from the dialectical-dialogical perspective of discourse analysis, in comparison and alterity, chronotope and exotopia. We discuss the conceptions of dialogue, ideology, subject, social voice and discursive genres, not only to think about Portuguese public teaching... The ficwriter and the Fanfiction field: a reflection on the shape of Contemporary writing

Murakami, Raquel Yukie 01 December 2016 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on fanfictions, or fanfics fictional pieces of writing from fans of a specific cultural object movies, series, books, comic strips, animations, games, etc,) with special attention to the conflicts among the ficwriters which arose from the types of writing in this environment. It is stated that the fanfiction writing practice constitutes a structured field in which its agents fight for symbolic capital, according to the concept created by Pierre Bourdieu. The forces of preservation and change in the fanfiction universe are analyzed in the context of a corpus of written texts created by fans forum discussions, manifests and fanfic. In these texts, fans debate the existing problems in the environment disagreement between authors in search of popularity and those seeking quality, prejudice against certain categories in the field and against authors with difficulties in writing. It also analyses the way fans and fanfiction writers relate with cultural objects on which they base their production, with the entertainment market and with Literature. In the same way there is a great deal of prejudice among fans, there are also forces in search of a democratic space, a free zone for fanfiction writers and readers, where it is possible to produce fanfics whose themes are generally rejected by mainstream media producers and society alike. These themes comprehend narratives with female main characters, homosexual relationships, explicit sex, etc. Therefore, the fanfiction is also an opportunity of free speech for minority groups.
