The role of consumer leverage in financial crises

Dimova, Dilyana January 2015 (has links)
This thesis demonstrates that consumer leverage can contribute to financial crises such as the subprime mortgage crisis characterised by increased bankruptcy prospects and tightened credit access. A recession may follow even when the leveraged sector is not a production sector and can be triggered by seeming positive events such as a technological innovation and a relaxation of borrowing conditions. The first preliminary chapter updates the Bernanke, Gertler and Gilchrist (1999) approach with financial frictions in the production sector to a two-sector model with consumption and housing. It shows that credit frictions in the capital financing decisions of housing firms are not sufficient to capture the negative consumer experience with falling housing prices and relaxed credit access during the recession. The second chapter brings the model closer to the subprime mortgage crisis by shifting credit constraints to the consumer mortgage market. Increased supply of houses lowers asset prices and reduces the value of the real estate collateral used in the mortgage which in turn worsens the leverage of indebted consumers. A relaxation of borrowing conditions turns credit-constrained households into a potential source of disturbances themselves when market optimism allows them to raise their leverage with little downpayment. Both cases demonstrate that although households are not production agents, their worsening debt levels can trigger a lasting financial downturn. The third chapter develops a chained mortgage contracts model where both homeowner consumers and the financial institutions that securitize their mortgage loan are credit-constrained. Adding credit constraints to the financial sector that provides housing mortgages creates opportunities for risk sharing where banks shift some of the downturn onto indebted consumers in order to hasten their own recovery. This consequence is especially evident in the case of relaxed credit access for banks. Financial institutions repair their debt position relatively fast at the expense of consumers whose borrowing ability is squeezed for a long period despite the fact that they may not be the source of the disturbance. The result mirrors the recent subprime mortgage crisis characterised by a sharp but brief decline for banks and a protracted recovery for mortgaged households.

Assessment of business risk economic capital for South Africa banks : a response to Pillar 2 of Basel II

Alie, Kaylene Jean January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (M.M. (Finance & Investment)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Wits Business School, 2016 / The study is an assessment of the current treatment of business risk, as a significant risk type for financial institutions. It includes an industry analysis of the five major banks in South Africa, as well as international banks, and how these banks currently manage business risk in the Pillar 2 supervisory process. It assesses economic capital frameworks and the importance of business risk in the risk assessment and measurement process in the global and local industry. Various methodologies have been researched to assess which statistical methods are best suited in the measurement of this risk type as well as the quantification of the capital levels required. This study has compared the available statistical methodologies currently used in the industry and concludes which is best given the issues pertaining to the modelling of business risk quantification. A statistical model has been developed to quantify business risk for a specific bank using bank specific data, using a methodology which is relatively generic and could be applied widely across all financial institutions. The model serves to illustrate the principles surrounding the quantification of business risk economic capital. / GR2018

The Role of South African financial Institutions (public and private) in the development of SME’s and entry level black entrepreneurs in South Africa: comparative analysis with respect to India and Brazil

Zama, Wanda January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (M.M.(Finance & Investment)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, Wits Business School, 2017 / This study investigated whether the financial sector (private and public) is accessible to the SME’s and entry level entrepreneurs dominated by Black and poor people. The study employed a comparative analysis method; it compared the structure of the South African financial sector to those of India and Brazil, as newly industrialised countries. The finding indicates that the South African financial sector lacked the presence of state-owned financial institutions as in the comparable NCI countries to support SMEs and entry level Black entrepreneurs. The study then recommended the creation of state-owned microfinance institutions, whose performance will determine the need of state-owned banks / GR2018

The Impact of FinTech Companies on Financial Institutions in Sweden

Almoustafa Alterkawi, Moayad, Bittar, Tamer January 2019 (has links)
FinTech companies have grown tremendously during the last decades and generated great impacts on traditional financial institutions and led to enormous alteration in the ways of providing the financial services. The continuous development of the financial services has stepped into a new stage, where new entrants impact incumbents even more and many challenges accompanied by threats might come to light. Questions started to appear about the future of the financial institutions, since the new entrants provide the same services of the incumbents in an effortless manner. The choice of this research topic was driven by the fact that previous research about FinTech focused solely on the evolution of FinTech companies and their segments, but studies have been neglected the impact of FinTech companies on financial institutions and how the latter remedy with that impact. Hence, the interest in how the financial institutions are influenced by FinTech companies resulted in the following research question: What is the impact of FinTech companies on financial institutions in Sweden? We formulated two more detailed questions to guide our study: 1) How the financial institutions remedy with the development of FinTech companies to protect their existence as financial services providers? 2) What kind of relationship have the financial institutions with the FinTech companies? The aim of this study is to extend the existing knowledge about the current and potential impacts of FinTech companies on financial institutions. Moreover, the purpose is to have a better understanding about how the incumbents remedy the effects of the new entrants and challenges that they confront. This study answered the research question through a qualitative method and the empirical data has been gathered from ten interviews with banks and insurance companies in Sweden. The findings of this thesis revealed that the FinTech companies obliged the financial institutions to develop their IT systems and services, either inhouse or by cooperating with FinTech companies and made them more open for collaboration than before. Further, the banking sector is more impacted by FinTech companies than the insurance sector. That makes them more likely to leave some segments for the new entrants in future. Concerning the attitudes, all the financial institutions are positive about FinTech companies and their impacts even though a few of the new entrants attempt to provide financial services with low security, generally most of them keen to improve the financial services.

Impactos na provisão para devedores duvidosos dos bancos europeus listados na Bolsa de Nova Iorque após a adoção das normas internacionais de contabilidade / Impacts on the allowance for loan losses in listed European banks in the New York stock exchange after the adoption of the international accounting standards

Silva, Fernando Chiqueto da 15 January 2009 (has links)
The pressure created by the internationalization of capital markets prompted the European Parliament s decision to enforce, through Regulation nº 1606/2002, the adoption of international accounting standards by companies domiciled in the European Union (EU) and listed in the regulated stock markets, for preparing their consolidated financial statements, effective from 2005. In line with this international market trend, Brazil has commenced a new phase in the pursuit for convergence in accounting practices. As a consequence, one of the first questions arising from the transition process concerns the possible impact caused by the introduction of the new accounting standards, considering the conceptual divergences existing in relation to the previously adopted norms. This uncertainty is heightened, in the case of the allowance for loan losses, by the fact that the international accounting standards incorporate a very specific measurement method, which as a result of its complex nature differs significantly from the measurement methods adopted by countries, such as Brazil, for example. Accordingly, the object of this study sought, based on a representative sample of European banks listed in the New York Stock Exchange: (i) to verify whether there is a significant difference between the balance of the allowance for loan losses calculated pursuant to IFRS and that calculated in accordance with previously adopted accounting standards and to measure the degree of such difference and (ii) to verify whether there is any significant relation between the number of bank branches and the use of the individual and collective evaluation methods established in IFRS for measuring the allowance for loan losses. Initially, the linear regression technique was used, based on information for the financial years between 2000 and 2006, where the dependent variable is the allowance for loan losses and the two independent variables are the credit portfolio and a dummy variable corresponding to the adoption of IFRS. Next, the analysis of variances (ANOVA) test was applied, where the independent variable refers to the adoption of IFRS and the dependent variable is represented by the division of the allowance for loan losses by the credit portfolio. Subsequently, for the purpose of verifying whether the number of bank branches is related to the method used to measure the allowance, a matrix of correlations was used based on the Spearman coefficients, considering as variables the individual allowance and the collective allowance in relation to the total and the credit portfolio and the stockholders equity in relation to the number of branches. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that the introduction of IFRS did not have a material effect on the balance of the allowance for loan losses of the European banks listed in the New York Stock Exchange. Further, it was also concluded that the number of bank branches is not related to the use of the individual and collective measurement methods, as established by IAS 39, since the concept of individually significant credit operations is applied differently by each financial institution.

Fatores determinantes da disponibilidade de crédito nos países: uma análise de 2004 a 2010 / Private credit determinants in countries between 2004-2010

Saito, André Taue 13 June 2012 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the private credit determinants in a country between 2004 and 2010, when OECD\'s richer countries, BRIC\'s and Latin American and Caribbean faced Private Credit/GDP ratio\'s increasing. Assuming heterogeneity among regions and applying regression panel data models the outputs indicate in OECD\'s richer countries, Private Credit/GDP ratio was mainly positively influenced by the Household Consumption. In BRIC\'s and Latin America and Caribbean, the Current Account Balance was the most relevant determinant. Furthermore, International Trade affected positively Private Credit/GDP in all country groups. Finally, the significance of these findings for decision makers is analyzed.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Paula Correia Lacanna.pdf: 1641353 bytes, checksum: ed94ad3ced7c02b80644b1c793ba1024 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-10-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The process of implementing international accounting standards, IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) was adopted internationally by financial institutions, in order to allow its financial statements to be more transparent and comparable with other financial reports issued by other companies thus enabling the main users of Accounting to understand in a harmonious and universal language the accounting numbers and their explanatory notes, thus assisting them in the process of decision-making in the accounting, management, economic and operational spheres. In Brazil, since 2010, financial institutions have started to prepare and disclose their consolidated financial statements in two different standards, the first standard being called BRGAAP, through the use of standards and procedures issued by the Central Bank of Brazil (BACEN) and the second standard, denominated IFRS, through the issuance of standards issued by the IASB, converged and translated by the Accounting Pronouncements Committee (CPC) and endorsed by BACEN through Resolutions. From the beginning of the process of convergence to international standards, the IASB standard that most impacted the Bank's reality was IAS 39 Financial Instruments. IAS 39 has always been considered complex since it was issued. After the 2008 crisis, it was possible to carry out a review of the standard by the regulatory agencies, resulting in the institutionalization of a project that segmented this work into three main stages, the first phase being the classification and measurement of financial instruments, second stage on the introduction of a new model of calculation of loss incurred and the third step on the accounting of hedge accounting, resulting in the publication of IFRS 9 on July 24, 2014, with a mandatory date as of January 1, 2018. The purpose of this study is to explore the differences in the criteria for classification and measurement of financial instruments, impairment and accounting for hedge accounting, as set forth in IAS 39 (International Accounting Standard) and IFRS 9. Related to this, as a data source, the report containing the quarterly financial information of the Brazilian Financial Institutions was selected on the BACEN website and selected the ranking of the 10 largest Financial Conglomerates in Brazil, whose search filter corresponded to the "Total Assets" field, as of March 31, 2018 , obtaining a representativity of 87% of the total. The target of this study is to evaluate the main effects of the adoption of IFRS 9 in the Financial Statements of Financial Institutions for the Institutions they adopted before 2018 and the impact estimates for those that will adopt the standard in 2018. Differences in accounting criteria IAS 39 and IFRS 9 were evaluated under the premise that the classification and measurement of financial assets and especially the new model in the calculation of the impairment will have a significant impact on the financial statements of the Financial Institutions. For the empirical test, the study was based on the review of the Complete Financial Statements in IFRS, on the base dates December, 31, 2017 and March, 31, 2018, in order to verify the actual / estimated impacts to the Institutions. As a conclusion, the analyzes showed that there were changes in the classification and measurement of financial assets, as well as the new calculation of the impairment impacted / would significantly impact the Shareholders' Equity, through the increase with the impairment expense, as was initially expected.

Desenvolvimento financeiro e crescimento econômico: a modernização do sistema financeiro brasileiro / Financial development and development growth: the modernization of Brazilian Financial System

Santos, Tharcísio Bierrenbach de Souza 14 March 2006 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the process of modernization of the Brazilian financial and capital markets and its correlation to the growth and development of the Brazilian economy during the period 1964 to 2004. This dissertation also describes in a chronological fashion, for the past four decades, the policies implemented by the Brazilian economic authorities as well as the ones approved by the Brazilian Congress aimed at establishing the rules and regulations for the Brazilian financial and capital markets. Moreover, the evolution of the Brazilian economy for this period is discussed. A substantial amount of economic data is used to study the different macroeconomic changes that took place during the period under study. Finally, this dissertation elaborates and adds to the theoretical discussion: as to whether or not there is a relationship between economic growth and financial development. This dissertation shows that there is direct relationship between the two, since financial development generates economic growth
