From the 80’s, it’s received some changing from the scientific thought that was established in the area. However, Physical Education does not always prepare the professional to face the challenges of acting in the school, perhaps for the academic graduation is surrounded of theories that do not dialogue to each other. It can be said that are so many strands which many teachers unaware or partially understand them. This issue creates a fragmentation of the knowledge, reducing the Physical Education conceptions to certain paradigms. If there was improvement in the theoretical foundation, since the end of the twentieth century, there still remains a lack of articulation among the knowledge, causing the disintegration of the sense of Physical Education at school and the depreciation of the teacher. It is believed that weaving the knowledge in the chain is a necessity to the teacher understand better his role at school; and, his specific contribution in the formation of children and young. Edgar Morin, with his complex thought, criticizes this scientific attitude that separate the knowledge without, promoting the dialogue of ideas, the perception of the whole and the parts, and the complementary perspective between opposite thoughts. Thus, the complexity is the basis that is going to support the argumentation, in which the theoretical character with an educational praxis view, therefore it believes in the process of action-reflection-action, as a promoter of the thought reformulation from the reality of the graduation, avoiding idealization and universalization to knowledge. It was the purpose of this thesis, discussing these theories and point out a possible way to the graduation of teachers. This paper ends showing that the Physical Education is not reducible to one essence and it has four principles that create knowledge which should be articulated: the movement, the life, the culture and the humanity. These pillars are the starting points that should be understood by the students as recursive form, that is, a pillar influences the other adding some values that were not in it before. It is believed that graduation can be developed like a game, whereby beginning with any pillar it is possible to reach in the others the opposite and complementary that will allow new debates, looks and proposals to solve the complex problem that is to educate. This knowledge game can add very much to the teacher graduation, because it allows navigate by the ocean of uncertainties of Physical Education knowledge passing through the island of certain which produced important knowledge to the teachers. This will make it possible to walk more confident in your professional practice. [pt] A SUPERVISÃO DE ESTÁGIO E O PROCESSO DE TRABALHO DO ASSISTENTE SOCIAL / [en] THE INTERNSHIP SUPERVISION AND THE LABOR PROCESS OF SOCIAL WORKERS

25 February 2019 (has links)
[en] This study has as its objective to analyze the internship supervision as an integrant part of the labor process of the social assistant nowadays. To achieve this we took in consideration the transformations that are occurring in the world of the work and its consequences for the Social Work as much as in the sense of the graduation of social workers as in the sense of the performance of these professionals. Thus the comprehension and the reflection about de internship supervision and the challenges that the Social Work faces nowadays are central aspects of this study. On the other hand, it was possible to observe that the internship and its supervision are suffering similar impacts of those suffered by the Social Work in reason of the transformations that are occurring in world of work. Specifically we sought to know how the training fields of the PUC-Rio Social Work course are addressing the question of the mediation between theory and practical application in the context of the internship policy adopted in the first semester of the year 2009. Therefore we traced profiles of the internship supervisors and it was also necessary to identify the comprehension about the theme labor process. That was accomplished in such way that was possible to understand how the ethical-political dimension of the profession is expressed in the supervision process and also as a contribution for the construction of new strategies in the direction pointed out by the curricular directives of the Associação Brasileira de Ensino e Pesquisa em Serviço Social (ABEPSS). The methodology was qualitative and quantitative and we used interviews as well as documental analysis.

Public Education/Public Health Perspectives on Collaboration-Influence on High School Completion

Campbell, Claudette Virginia 01 January 2019 (has links)
The research problem focused on the use of collaboration by managers, supervisors, consultants, and professional staff in a department of public education and health to address disparities in on-time high school completion rates. The purpose of the study was to examine the perspectives of individuals in these public sectors on the use of collaboration as a means to improve on-time high school completion rates for African American and Hispanic students. The theoretical foundation and conceptual framework for the study were John Rawls's theory of justice and Amartya Sen's capability approach. The key research question involved how individuals in the public education and health sectors viewed the use of collaboration to address a complex problem of low rate of on-time high school completion for African American and Hispanic students. The research design was a multiple case study. Seven individuals participated from a department of public education and 4 from a department of public health in the same state. Data were collected and analyzed from participant interviews. Themes were identified from categories and specific codes or words that described the content of the participants' responses. A major conclusion was collaboration between a public education department and public health department can be used as a means to improve on-time high school completion rates for African American and Hispanic students. The implications for social change may be to increase the awareness for a public education department and public health department to routinely work in collaboration to improve on-time high school completion rates of minority and other vulnerable students.

Social, Demographic, and Institutional Effects on African American Graduation Rates in U.S. Colleges and Universities.

Wright, LaQueta L. 05 1900 (has links)
Improving the retention and graduation of African Americans and other minority groups in higher education is an important but highly politicized issue on college and university campuses. Prior studies emphasize the relationship between minority retention and achievement, cultural diversity, and racial policies and climates at predominantly White colleges and universities in the United States. In response to the need for further research, the effects of institutional actions related to diversity, minority group and African American retention, and social integration initiatives on African American graduation rates were examined for a national sample of United States (U.S.) colleges and universities. From a potential list of 7,018 colleges and universities, 2,233 met the inclusion criteria for the study. But necessary and complete information from national directories and the census could only be found for the final sample of 1,105. After dropping 30 outliers, several multiple regression analyses identified the institutional actions, social, and demographic factors that best predicted graduation rates. Public U.S. colleges and universities located in the Midwest region had lower African American graduation rates than private colleges and universities located in the South. Higher African American graduation rates occurred in colleges and universities with Black cultural centers, higher first-year retention rates, higher women enrollment rates, a higher number of student organizations, and Division III athletic programs. Colleges and universities located in a town had higher African American graduation rates than those located in a city, suburb, or rural area.

Minimum Competencies Needed for Graduation: A Comparative Case Study of Perceptions Held by Professional Educators and the Local School Community

Raines, Nancy Ellen 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study is a comparison of minimum competencies needed for high school graduation as perceived by local professional educators to those perceived by the local school community. The source of data is Community Survey of Essential Student Skills. This survey instrument is a rating of the importance of minimum competencies by 1,931 patrons in the local school community. A total number of 401 professional educators had previously rated these competencies. The following conclusions are based on the analysis of each hypothesis and observations during the study. 1. There is an increasing amount of emphasis in the literature that major perceptual differences exist between professional educators and school communities. Educators need to identify and act upon the perceptions of their patrons. Increased emphasis upon community involvement is supported by findings of this study. For example, the community could be involved in curriculum development for life skills. Patrons, students and parents could serve on advisory committees to school boards. 2. There is evidence that increased communication efforts are needed to narrow the gap between perceptions of educators and school communities. Educators perceived the reading and writing skills in this study as Essential but patrons did not. Better clarification to patrons relating to why and how skills are taught would be helpful. Otherwise, it will appear to patrons that schools are out of step with requirements for coping in today's society. 3. Inflation has increased the cost of education, and taxpayers are not willing to support a system that they feel may not be doing an effective job. While there is a large majority of the American public that still has confidence in schools as indicated by the 1978 Gallup Poll, there needs to be a bolstering of support. It behooves educators to set and monitor expectations of achievement, provide resources to meet needs of diverse students, inform and involve patrons and promote a caring, disciplined atmosphere in all classrooms.

Secondary and Postsecondary Teachers' Perceptions of ESL Students' Barriers to College Graduation

Griffin, Barbara E. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Majority of English as second language (ESL) students attending primary and secondary schools in the United States are not considered college ready despite mandated educational strategies aimed at improving language acquisition and academic performance. ESL students are more likely to drop out within the first 2 years of college than their English-speaking peers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore educators' perspectives regarding high postsecondary attrition rates of ESL students in Middle Tennessee. Tinto's retention theory provided the framework for the study. Data collection included semistructured interviews with 6 Middle Tennessee public high school teachers and 6 Middle Tennessee college professors from 2- and 4-year public colleges. Interview data were coded and analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Findings revealed 4 major themes: language acquisition, barriers to college graduation, adverse circumstances, and academic achievement. Participants reported a desire for alignment between primary, secondary, and postsecondary education. Findings were used to develop a professional development training curriculum for secondary and postsecondary educators. The project included effective strategies to use in the classroom to increase ESL students' college readiness and college graduation rates. If implemented correctly, this project will positively impact ESL students' language acquisition and academic achievement, but it will also develop a significant professional partnership between K-12 public schools and colleges.

A Phenomenological Exploration of the Experiences of High School Students Enrolled in School-Wide College Readiness Programs

Thomas, Sherlina 01 January 2016 (has links)
In the early 1980s, the United States experienced a high school dropout epidemic, leading school systems to adopt reform efforts. College readiness programs (CRPs) became a tool to address educational disparities in secondary and postsecondary education for over three decades. While decreases occurred in the overall high school dropout rate across racial and ethnic groups, they have been minimal. This study addressed a research gap on the lack of student input and perceptions about their experiences in CRP programs. This phenomenological study used in-depth, semi-structured interviews with criterion-selected former high school students from 3 schools within the ABC County School System in the southern United States. The sample of 12 students provided data about their lived experiences as Project GRAD scholars. The theoretical framework for this study was Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory (EST) based on human development and systems of the environment. Based on results of the interview questions and emergence of themes, 95% of the students indicated their motivation for attending college was based on family. While the traditional college readiness program had some positive influence on student's secondary and post-secondary plans, such programs were not the primary contributing factor, but rather parental/family support was. Furthermore, personal student accounts of their involvement with the Project GRAD program reflect a positive experience. However, such accounts did not reflect a consistent and active supporting relationship with the organization. This finding is in opposition to reported data by many college readiness programs. Implications for social change will bring awareness and modification to programs with the intent of alleviating educational dropout epidemics.

African American administrators' perspectives: Improving African American male high school graduation rates in San Joaquin County

Gayle, Marlon De Shawn 01 January 2012 (has links)
This Northern California single case qualitative study used Critical Race Theory as a framework for examining the perspectives of African American administrators on improving graduation rates of African American male public high school students in San Joaquin County. Barriers to graduation completion in San Joaquin County public high schools continue to leave stakeholders looking for solutions to change the status quo for African American male high schools students. Ten San Joaquin County African American male and female administrators (identified by pseudonyms) from various public elementary, middle, and high schools were interviewed individually. Participants' responses were categorized into themes according to their answers for each question. Contrary to explanations for low graduation rates of African American male students, as predicted in the literature review of this study, the participants' perspectives rarely indicated that discipline, or lack of parental involvement was a prevailing reason for low graduation rates for African American male students. Low teacher expectations, lack of role models and advocates, and the failure of the school systems to implement successful strategies to improve the graduation rates of African American male students appeared to be the most common themes as discussed in the literature review. Participants perspectives suggest public high schools in San Joaquin County struggle to make positive connections with African American male students. All of the participants claimed that teachers, administrators, and school staff struggle to build and maintain healthy relationships with African American male students. Some of the recommendations from the participants of this study suggest that stakeholders can assist African American male students in overcoming barriers and improving their graduation rates by: starting African American male charter schools, operating mentoring programs in schools, and recruiting more African American teachers and administrators.
