The spirituality of L'Arche and its potential in developing formation programs for people with learning disabilities

Lucas, Pamela Turnbull 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study is to address the proposition that the spirituality of L'Arche has a great deal of potential to offer people with learning disabilities outside its own community setting. For chaplains who have the task of seeking to nurture and develop the spiritual lives of people with learning disabilities in schools, there exists the opportunity to draw out the fundamental characteristics of the spirituality of L'Arche and incorporate these into their own formation programs. The opportunity to be creative and imaginative in developing formation programs comes from within the context of legislation which requires schools to meet the spiritual needs of the children in their care. / Christian Spirituality / M. Adolescents' experiences and coping strategies with parental substance addiction within a rural farming community : a social work perspective

Marinus, Denise Ronelle 02 1900 (has links)
The abuse of and addiction to substances by parents of adolescents, especially in rural areas, is recognised as a major national and international social concern. South African legislation and policy documents provide a framework that emphasises the need to protect and care for children of addicted parents. Literature and recent studies, however, do not focus on how adolescents in rural communities experience dealing with an addicted parent. For this reason, this research study explored and described the experiences and coping strategies of adolescents in rural communities regarding the parents’ addiction. The study was based on a qualitative research approach and made use of the contextual, explorative, descriptive and narrative research designs. The findings illustrate the descriptions of participants’ perceptions and experiences related to living in a farming community, the nature of parental substance addiction, how it affects them, how they deal with it and their perceptions of support needed by them. Recommendations in terms of the micro, mezzo and macro levels serves as guidelines for social workers to assist adolescents of substance-addicted parents with the needed support, protection and care. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

School-based sexuality education in Uganda : a grounded theory approach

Achora, Susan 24 July 2015 (has links)
Today, 1.2 billion adolescents stand at the challenging crossroads between childhood and the adulthood. Driven by a combination of biological, psychological and social forces, adolescence is a period of “stress and storm” for many adolescents predisposing them to risky behaviours with long term consequences. Adolescence is not only a time of vulnerability; it is also an age of opportunity for investment in sustained health and wellbeing through education and preventive efforts to help them navigate risks and vulnerabilities. Evidence-based sexuality education programmes are a cornerstone in reducing adolescent sexual risk behaviours and promoting sexual health. A qualitative, grounded theory study was undertaken to explore and describe experiences of adolescents, teachers and perceptions of parents of school-based sexuality education (SBSE). An indepth literature review through concept analysis on the phenomenon was conducted to assist the researcher with theoretical sensitivity and theoretical saturation. In-depth Individual interviews and focus group interviews were conducted to generate data. Interviews were audio-taped and transcribed by the researcher verbatim. The direct quotes of participants were coded and arranged into meaning units for analysis. A constant comparison method of data analysis was applied by following a Strauss and Corbin (1998) analysis process of open, axial and selective coding to analyse textual qualitative data until themes, categories and sub-categories were identified and developed. Data analysis revealed that adolescents benefitted from SBSE but the implementation of programme was undermined by challenges at national, institutional, community, family and individual levels enshrined in the physical. There were also challenging contextual factors at various levels that influenced the benefits of the SBSE. It is recommended that there is need to review the teaching and learning resources and to fully integrate sexuality education into the formal curriculum. The ministry of education in Uganda should take a leadership role in fostering engagement and participation of major stakeholders, particularly teachers, parents and other community groups in delivering school-based sexuality education that addresses the needs of the schoolgoing children / Health Studies / D. Advanced radiating systems based on leaky waves and nondiffracting waves / Systèmes rayonnants complexes à ondes de fuite

Fuscaldo, Walter 27 February 2017 (has links)
In recent years, microwave, millimeter-wave, and THz applications such as medical and security imaging, wireless power transfer, and near-field focusing, just to mention but a few, have gained much attention in the area of ICT due to their potentially high social impact. On one hand, the need of highly-directive THz sensors with tunable radiating features in the far-field region has recently boosted the research activity in the design of flexible, low-cost and low-profile devices. On the other hand, it is of paramount importance to focus energy in the near-field region, and thus the generation of limited-diffraction waves in the microwave and millimeter-wave regime is a topic of recent increasing interest. In this context, leaky-wave theory is an elegant and extremely useful formalism which allows for describing in a common fashion guiding and radiating phenomena in both the near field and the far field, spanning frequencies from microwaves to optics passing through THz. In this PhD thesis we aim to exploit the intrinsic versatility of the leakywave approach to design advanced radiating systems for controlling the far-field radiating features at THz frequencies and for focusing electromagnetic radiation in the near field at millimeter waves. Specifically, the use of relatively new materials such as graphene and liquid crystals has been considered for the design of leaky-wave based radiators, achieving very promising results in terms of reconfigurability, efficiency, and radiating capabilities. In this context, an original theoretical analysis has provided new general formulas for the evaluation of the radiating features (e.g., half-power beamwidth, sidelobe level, etc.) of leaky-wave antennas. Indeed, the current formulations are based on several simplifying hypotheses which do not allow for an accurate evaluation of the beamwidth in different situations. In addition to the intriguing reconfigurable capabilities offered by leaky waves in far-field applications, interesting focusing capabilities can be obtained in the near field. In particular, it is shown that leaky waves can profitably be used to generate limited-diffraction Bessel beams by means of narrow-band radiators in the microwave range. Also, the use of higherorder leaky-wave modes allows for achieving almost the same performance in the millimeter-wave range, where previous designs were subjected to severe fabrication issues. Even more interestingly, the limited-diffractive character of Bessel beams can also be used to generate limited-diffraction pulses as superpositions of monochromatic Bessel beams over a considerable fractional bandwidth. In this context, a novel theoretical framework has been developed to understand the practical limitations to efficiently generate limited-diffraction, limited-dispersion pulses, such as X-waves, in the microwave/millimeter-wave range. As a result of this investigation, a class of wideband radiators has been thoroughly analyzed, showing promising capabilities for the generation of both zeroth-order and higher-order Xwaves. The latter may pave the way for the first localized transmission of orbital angular momentum in the microwave range.

Développement d'antennes multi-faisceaux multicouches de la bande Ku à la bande V / On the development of multi-beam multilayer antennas from Ku to W band

Tekkouk, Karim 03 April 2014 (has links)
This PhD thesis deals with the design of multi-beam antennas. A single radiating aperture is used to generate several beams with high gain and a large field of view. The multi beam operation is achieved by using two topologies of Beam Forming Networks (BFN): quasi optical BFN, and circuit-based BFN. For each category, several solutions have been proposed and validated experimentally. In particular, for the quasi-optical configurations, pillbox structures, mono-pulse antennas in pillbox technology, and multi-layer Rotman lenses have been considered. On the other hand, for circuit-based multi-beam antennas, two solutions have been analyzed: a phased array for SATCOM applications in the framework of a national ANR project and a Butler matrix with controlled side-lobe levels for the radiated beams within a collaboration with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. The proposed concepts and antenna solutions have been considered in different frequency bands: Ku, K and V. Two technologies have been mainly adopted for the fabrication of the various prototypes: Substrate Integrated Waveguide technology (SIW) which combines the advantages in terms of cost of the printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication process with the efficiency of classical waveguide technology. Considerable efforts have been devoted to the implementation of multilayer SIW structures to overcome and go beyond the current state of the art at national level on PCB fabrication process. Diffusion Bounding Technique, developed at “Ando and Hirokawa lab” at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, which consists of bonding laminated thin metal plates under high temperature and high pressure. This technique allows the fabrication of planar hollow waveguide structures with efficiencies up to 80% in the millimeter wave-band.

Synchronisation toute optique d’un réseau de communication quantique / All-optical synchronization for quantum networking

Bin Ngah, Lufti Arif 11 December 2015 (has links)
This manuscript reports the development of fundamental resources for long distance quantum communication based on fibre telecom technology and non-linear optical waveguides. After a general introduction on quantum communication, the thesis is structured along three parts. The first part illustrates the development of two photonic polarization entanglement sources suitable for quantum networking. Both sources generate paired photons at telecom wavelength via spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides (PPLN/W). They rely on type-II and type 0 phase matching, respectively. In the second part, two high quality heralded single photon sources are highlighted. The first one relies on on-chip generation and spatial multiplexing of heralded single photons towards achieving higher bit rates. The second one takes advantage of passive temporal multiplexing of a single SPDC process. Finally, an all-optical approach towards efficient and accurate synchronization of remote entangled photon pair sources within quantum relay architecture over long distances is presented. This particular synchronization technique highlights the use of ultra-fast picosecond pulsed telecom fiber laser, operating at 2.5 GHz repetition rate, acting as a master optical clock, enabling to accurately synchronize the emission of photon pairs in the telecom C-band of wavelengths at two remote locations. This innovative approach is applied for synchronizing two remote PLLN/W based sources operated at 2.5 GHz, and preliminary results on two-photon interference obtained with single photons coming from each source are shown and discussed.
