Well-Being in its Natural Habitat: Orientations to Happiness and the Experience of Everyday Activities

Grimm, Carsten January 2013 (has links)
Peterson, Park, and Seligman (2005) have proposed that individuals seek to increase their well-being through three behavioural orientations; via pleasure, meaning, and engagement. The current study investigated how orientations to happiness influenced the pursuit and experience of daily activities using an experience sampling methodology (ESM). Daily activities were experienced as a blend of both hedonic and eudaimonic characteristics. Dominant orientation to happiness did not predict engaging in different daily activities. Trait orientations to happiness had some influence on the momentary experience of behaviour. Those scoring highest on all three orientations to happiness also rated their daily activities highest on momentary pleasure, meaning, engagement, and happiness. The results suggest that increasing all three orientations is a pathway to the full life and a balanced well-being portfolio.

An investigation of how children with learning difficulties perceive happiness in relation to school and learning

Naude, Mae Maskew 10 1900 (has links)
Purpose - To develop a greater understanding of the experience of happiness as it is perceived by children with learning difficulties. This study focuses on the interpretative aspect of perception, which is seen to consist of; (1) how the experience feels, (2) how the structure of the experience is understood, and (3) what relevance is attributed to the experience. Methodology and rationale - The paradigmatic point of departure is Positive Psychology, which forms part of the strength-based perspective. Positive Psychology explores those factors that allow individuals and communities, not just to survive, but to flourish. The methodological orientation of this study is phenomenological and qualitative in nature. Findings - While the most consistent theme was the relationship between friendship and happiness, this study offers insight into all three aspects of perception as defined above. It also suggests that children with learning difficulties may seek their happiness outside of the context of school and learning. / Further Teacher Education / M. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)

Alarcón, Reynaldo 25 September 2017 (has links)
The present research had the following goals: (a) to identify the favorite objects to reach the happiness; and (b ), to determine if the favorite objects are associated with the gender, the married condition and the age of the participant. The sample was integrated by 163 middle classpeople: 81 men and 82 women, all from Lima City. They were requested to choose, from a listof 15 items, the three objects that they consider the most important for happiness. The favorite objects were: "to have good health"; "to have a good relationship with God" and "to have agood family". There were not significant differences in the object choosing according to gender, although there were differences according to age and married condition. The analysis of multiple regression informed that the more important considered objects explain 66% of the varianceof the variable happiness. The results are discussed and compared with similar works. / Se comunican los resultados de una investigación que tuvo los siguientes objetivos: (a) identificarlos objetos preferidos para alcanzar la felicidad, y, (b) determinar si los objetos preferidos están asociados con el género, el estado conyugal y la edad. Measuring indices of happiness in a parent-training program.

Ewing, Sarah A. 05 1900 (has links)
Behavior analysts have long recognized the need for direct and reliable measurement of complex behaviors that are important to society. Recently investigators have approached one of the singular most complex behaviors: happiness. Limited research, however, has explored happiness in parent-training programs with children with autism and their families. The current study applied the definitions and data systems used in Broome's 2007 study to obtain indices of happiness within a parent training program for parents of toddlers with autism. Direct measures of smiles and laughs were collected from videotaped assessments. Results suggest that the program increased behaviors associated with happiness. Results are discussed in terms of program development and future research.

Comparing Indices of Happiness during Teaching Interactions

Anderson, Claire Therese 05 1900 (has links)
The measurement of happiness has received increasing attention in behavior analytic literature. Happiness in individuals with developmental disabilities has been assessed by 1) counting a specific behavior, or 2) sampling constellations of behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the two approaches while observing nine child and teacher dyads at an autism treatment center. Results showed that, overall, a constellation of behaviors can yield similar patterns when compared to a specific behavior count. However, the affect of one person did not predict the affect of the other and similar instructional conditions did not predict affect either. The implications of these results and future directions are discussed.

Sex and Older Americans: Exploring the Relationship Between Frequency of Sexual Activity and Happiness

Jackson, Adrienne 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is two-fold: (1) to examine the correlation between frequency of sexual activity and general happiness among older Americans and (2) to examine the correlation between frequency of sexual activity and marital happiness among older married Americans. This study employed quantitative data drawn from the 2004-2008 General Social Surveys. Two samples were used. The first sample included all respondents 65 years of age and older with valid responses for the dependent, independent, and control variables. The second sample was a subset of the first and included only the married respondents. Both bivariate cross-tabulations and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted. As expected, the data support a positive association between sexual activity and general happiness in both the total elder sample and the married elder sample (p < 0.05). Also, as expected, the data support a positive association between frequency of sexual activity and marital happiness in the married elder sample (p < 0.05). Even with the introduction of control variables, frequency of sexual activity was found to be a significant predictor of both general and marital happiness (p < 0.05). This study suggests that sexual activity does indeed contribute the happiness and well-being of older Americans.

A Phenomenological Study of High-Performance Teachers' Happiness at School and Home

Abuaqel, Sarah 01 January 2019 (has links)
This research study is focused on understanding the phenomenology of happiness of High Performing Teachers (HPT) working in an elementary school located in a Midwest City. The purpose of the study was to understand positive and negative emotions of HPT, through their experiences at work and home. Qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews was employed for this study. Tomkins' affect theory of happiness (ATH), was used to assess and explore positive and negative emotions of participants of the study. In this study a purposeful sample of 11 participants that work in elementary school located in a Midwest City, participated in in-depth, face-to face interviews. Results of this study based on experiences of HPT show that positive experiences such as relaxing time at home, spending time with family members they felt make them happy. To understand negative emotions, most of participants indicated that anxiety; inappropriate interactions with others at work site, and financial issues are the main negative experiences that impact their performance. Overall, most of HPT felt happy in life; however, results show that they are happier at home. This study brought new knowledge about positive and negative emotions and the importance for public organizations about improving staff interactions that may impact the contribution to performing better as teachers.
