We have as sources two Latin documents wrote in the 5th century Ireland (Confesio and Epistola ad milites Corotici). Different publications that deal with this subject often describe Patrick as cristianizer of Ireland or responsible for organizing a preexisting Christianity. We present another approach considering only the two letters written by Patrick trying to observe how it represented the Irishmen, himself and the christianization of Ireland. The plot we ve constructed understands the representation concept as a polissemic form, that if thought in middle voice, whithout concentrating on the polarization between a realistic or textualistic form of to lead the narrative, may mean a different form of working with the Patrician workmanships, introducing, thus, in its narrative nucleus, an aprroach that is different from the proposals of realistic character suggested by the Irish historiography. There is Patrick, there is Ireland and there are representations.

O Brasil na Irlanda: vidas em deslocamento na mobilidade contemporânea / Brazil in Ireland: lives in displacement in contemporary mobility

Alessandra Garcia Soares 12 December 2014 (has links)
The phenomenon of international migration is probably as old as humanity and for a long time has sparked interest in various areas of human science, including Geography. Data of the Brazilian State Department Itamaraty from 2014 showed that 2.8 million Brazilians live abroad. Since the 1980s lots of researchers have been analysing the immigration of Brazilians to the United States of America, Japan as well as some European countries. The following thesis focuses on the Brazilian immigrants that have just become notable in the last decade, taking the Brazilian immigrants in Ireland as an example to discuss a subject of utmost importance: contemporary international migration. In the thesis it is argued that both the present age of science and technology and globalization contribute to the rise of global mobility and migration causing new, complex challenges. The argumentation is based on the assumption that the current movements of migration are the result of an entire set of factors on macro and on individual level. Therefore, the analysis is focused on the significance of networks of solidarity such as mechanisms that reinforce international migration flows.

Aplikace teorií ekonomického růstu na Irsko a komparace s jižním křídlem eurozóny (země PIGS) / Application of growth economic theory on Ireland comparing to southern countries of eurozone (PIIGS)

Nguyen, Phuong January 2017 (has links)
The Ireland´s recovery from the crisis that broke in the Irish economy was fast comparing to other eurozone nations so-called PIIGS. Therefore, the thesis identify sources and turning points that generate the inclusive growth of the Irish economy. Economic growth comes from the accumulation of labour and capital inputs combined with improvements in the productivity of labour associated with technological progress. There are clear signals that all these factors contribute to the economy growth in Ireland. Ireland benefits from large inflows of foreign direct investment that helps to spread technological progress, know-how into the country. This has resulted in export of hi-tech goods and services. Labour force in Ireland are skilled individuals. In addition, both, labour force and labour market in Ireland are highly adaptable to change. Above mentioned drivers and others are fundamental to economic growth. Overall, Ireland´s economy is reasonably well established and it has made significant progress in many areas that contrast with southern economies in PIIGS group.

The many faces of a conflict:representations of the 1981 Northern Irish hunger strike in international press

Simuna, E. (Erja) 15 February 2017 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the international news coverage of the 1981 Northern Irish hunger strike. The media had plenty of emotionally and politically charged incidents to report, and they rendered it in various manners. This study discusses why these different representations of the hunger strike were born. This thesis analyses news about the hunger strike published in fifteen international newspapers. For this kind of research, historical contextualization is of great importance. Methodological starting point lies in the traditions of imagological methods. A mental image is understood here as something in our thoughts that steers us to see the world in a certain way. A newspaper depicts news stories in a way the newspaper and the society in which it operates see its worth. Media representations have a very complex background. Based on the findings, it seems likely that existing mental images play a major role in the way a news topic is covered and given meaning. In this case, news coverage was not based solely on the hunger strike but also on historical discourse which had created a certain meaning for the event. The coverage of each newspaper was based on their own worldviews. Internationally, the level of interest is determined by varied cultural and political factors. News coverage both reflects and affects. News from other countries is more likely to be reported if some links exists, something to identify and consider significant. The findings of the research suggest that news coverage is not always just the reporting of events. It can reflect more profound features. Each media source has its own reasons to represent news in a certain way. Primarily, the reasoning points to the medium itself. However, we can argue that news coverage also reflects the values of a community. News is usually produced to appeal to the majority of the intended audience. This case illustrates that international news coverage is a useful method in revealing and understanding mental images and their influence. / Tiivistelmä Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Pohjois-Irlannin tasavaltalaisvankien nälkälakon kansainvälistä uutisointia vuonna 1981. Tapahtuma sisälsi poliittisesti ja emotionaalisesti latautuneita tilanteita, joita kansainvälinen media uutisoi eri tavoin. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miksi erilaisia mediarepresentaatioita syntyi. Tutkimuksen päälähteenä käytetään viittätoista sanomalehteä eri puolilta maailmaa. Historiallisella kontekstoinnilla on suuri merkitys tämänkaltaisessa tutkimuksessa. Median luomilla mielikuvilla on monitahoinen tausta. Jokaisella tiedotusvälineellä on omat syynsä uutisoida tietyllä tavalla.

Ireland's music education national debate: rationalization, reconciliation, contextuality and applicability of global philosopies in conflict

Heneghan, F J 08 November 2004 (has links)
‘The young Irish person has the worst of all European musical “worlds”’. This seminal statement was discovered to be symptomatic of a general malaise. The Music Education National Debate (MEND 1994-1996) was a three-phase response to Deaf Ears?, the report from which the above statement was taken. The eventual aim was to set up a forum for music education which would systematically address the difficulties in Ireland. The scope of MEND was, thus, general, ab initio. Its progress was, however, inhibited by a specific concern, which was fundamental to the whole process of reform. It soon became apparent that consensus on a philosophy of music education to inform evolving strategies would be a sine qua non. Coincidentally, this was a time of debacle in the global field, instanced by the publication of a ‘new’ philosophy of music education (David Elliott’s Music Matters [1995]) which threw down the gauntlet to the undisputed classic - Reimer’s A Philosophy of Music Education [1970/1989]. This challenge amounted to a veritable counterposition and demanded a separate, albeit derivative, study before the MEND Report could be completed. This study was to become the substance of this thesis. The aim of this work is to analyse these polar philosophies with a view to reconciling them. Beginning with some commonly held values about music education, the relevance of American music education practice to a wide range of global systems is suggested. The dominance of a western art (music) mentality is called into question by giving prominence to multiculturalism and popular music. Music Education as Aesthetic Education (Reimer) is compared with the praxial approach (Elliott). They yielded to rationalization, albeit posing residual questions of balance, relevance, and time constraints within the curriculum. The indispensability of performance and listening as a complementary pair is re-established. The ascendancy of artistic criteria in defining the music programme is affirmed. Finally the failure of the universal philosophy hypothesis is redeemed by sketching the compromises necessary to convert it to the adaptability of the contextual idea, leading the study to a conclusion of general, rather than specific, application. Stephen Dedalus' Search for Identity in Catholic Ireland

Cuevas, Cristina L 26 October 2015 (has links)
The purpose of my research was to explore the interplay between religion and art in James Joyce’s novel, A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN. My aim was to trace the development of the protagonist, Stephen Dedalus by analyzing how Catholicsim is an institution that forms him, yet must reject to realize his artistic potential. I researched Joyce’s background to gain an understanding of the exilic experience on the literature. Through the exilic lens, I realized that Catholicism was the predominant influence on Stephen’s need to embark on a self-imposed exile at the end of the novel. Complicating his decision is the fact that he does not stop believing in religious constructs such as heaven and hell. In conclusion I found by following his artistic longing, and turning away from the church he is committing a sin and, as a result, damning his soul.

Komparace příčin a řešení současných hospodářských problémů Irska a Řecka / Comparison of causes and solutions of the current economic problems of Ireland and Greece

Fenclová, Veronika January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this master thesis is to analyze and look for ways out of present debt crisis which the states of euro zone are in. I am exploring these issues on the two countries, which have accepted the euro as their currency. European Union (or more precisely euro zone) has had problems for almost the whole of decade, which are now threatening its being. The basic causes are mainly the lack of structural assumptions of single European economies. The practical part of the master thesis is dealing with comparison of financial assistance, which was provided to Greece and Ireland from EU and IMF. It is evaluating the effectiveness of such help with regard to current economic situation and outlook. The thesis is comparing both of these countries from their entry to European Community and it is assessing fulfillment of Maastricht criteria. It is exploring economic and political situation of both countries and is dealing with the period after the global financial crisis, which has revealed long-term and unresolved problems if selected states of European Union.
