Writing Home

Molnar, Barbara 20 May 2011 (has links)
The following group of themed essays explores the author's relationship with the many homes she has had. The works are autobiographical, and they begin during the author's childhood as an Air Force Brat. After exploring a series of homes across the United States, including Honolulu, the work focuses on the author's transition from living in many places to life in one city, New Orleans, Louisiana, where the author grew up. This collection also examines homelessness. Just as the author was searching for a new home along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, she became homeless after hurricane Katrina. Although the author had had the opportunity to make many apartments a "home", homelessness offered her the opportunity to explore what it is that makes a house or apartment a home.

Den blå blomman : Längtans framvisande hos Novalis

Li, Viresha January 2016 (has links)
The essay at hand pursues the question as to how the German philosopher and poet Novalis has been able to characterize the whole of philosophy as a longing for home. In succession to a historic contextualization and research background there follows a presentation of certain ideas in Kant and Fichte. This aims to build the historico-philosophical ground for thinking the philosophy of Novalis as such a longing. A close reading of Novalis work Fichte-studies is the main justification for this interpretation. In accordance, Novalis understands philosophy as a longing for home arisen from the factual experience of the I. Feeling links this experience to theabsolute, thus providing the foundation for philosophy. Thus in thinking, this absolute ground can be set only relatively and indirectly. Philosophy can never establish direct contact with the absolute, but must be driven infinitely by thinking, through feeling, towards it. This drive shall be understood as a longing. Longing arrives through what is absolutely given in feeling. Longing moves towards re-establishing the given which thinking has lost. The I is understood as where being dwells. Herein the I's feeling of direct experience of its existence is reached — as a belonging to the world. Such a feeling of belonging is destined to evaporate with thinking. Nevertheless, thinking hopes to come home — it dreams this future. Hence we arrive at philosophy thought as a longing for home. In the end, we conclude with Novalis that philosophy thought this way must be procured by poetry.

Yearning and Its Measurement in Complicated Grief

Robinaugh, Donald J., Mauro, Christine, Bui, Eric, Stone, Lauren, Shah, Riva, Wang, Yuanjia, Skritskaya, Natalia A., Reynolds, Charles F., Zisook, Sidney, O'Connor, Mary-Frances, Shear, Katherine, Simon, Naomi M. January 2016 (has links)
Persistent intense yearning for the deceased is a core clinical feature of complicated grief (CG) that distinguishes it from other mental disorders that develop following loss. The Yearning in Situations of Loss Scale (YSL) is a recently developed assessment of yearning. To assess the psychometric properties of the YSL in those with CG, we administered the YSL, Inventory of Complicated Grief, and Quick Inventory of Depression Symptomatology to 303 treatment-seeking bereaved adults with CG. Our results suggest the YSL is a reliable assessment with acceptable convergent and discriminant validity as a measure of yearning in those with CG.

\"Qui nem jiló\": a saudade do lugar de origem / \"Qui nem jiló\": longing for the place of origin

Palomo, Victor Roberto da Cruz 07 March 2013 (has links)
Longing is a signifier that condenses semantic layers which come close to the meanings of melancholy and nostalgia, but distinguishes itself (from them) by constituting the human perception of time fugacity and their aspirations for eternity. Such dimensions relate most of the time to the lack of and the wish to turn present childhood images, the memory of dear friends, of the loved ones and of the distant place of origin. Present in the Portuguese lyric poem since the records of medieval troubadours chants, longing was associated with all aesthetic literary movements, becoming a prevailing topic of the Brazilian lyric poem, firstly in an incipient way during the Colonial Period, and then more intensely from the Romantic Movement on. The following work has opted for the perspective of the longing for the place of origin, aiming to distinguish the similarities and dissimilarities of its meanings between the Portuguese matrices and the Brazilian lyric poem. In order to do so, at first a survey was done to identify the etymologies of the word, as well as remarks about possible psychological backgrounds. Next, it was made a diachronic compilation of the topic, starting with the lyric of Portuguese poets, which indicates the predominance of collective poetic subjects who long for a grandiose homeland, a pathos based upon mythical narrative and historical records. By means of a modernist perspective, the meanings of the longing for the place of origin were sought within a Brazilian utterance, in which the works of three distinctive poets of that period were chosen: Evocação do Recife, Recife and Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada, by Manuel Bandeira; Ilha do Governador, Saudades do Brasil em Portugal and Pátria Minha, by Vinicius de Moraes; and Tristeresina, A Rua and Três da Madrugada, by Torquato Neto. In these works, it will be observed to what extent the meaning of longing is close to or distant from the Portuguese semant ics. Whenever they prove to be distant from the Portuguese matrix, they are recognizable by their ludic accents, by the emphasis on the intimacy of the poetic subjects and by the predominance of a colloquial syntax. By way of conclusion, it has been highlighted the relevance of this topic for the lyric poem: longing constitutes an index that points out to the search of the subject for themselves, so that by writing about beloved places of origin, the poet establishes poetic subjects in order to make them present.

[YOU ARE WITH] KIN AND [YOU CAN BE AT] EASE

Al Ghussein, Abdul Azim 01 January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of hospitality, sharing and acclimation within a studio art practice as a means of fostering consideration of others. I employ a practice whereby I disrupt the typical gallery context, and through the production and dissemination of consumable items from the Middle East, I examine how resources can be used, valued, and shared to accommodate various and unspecified others and provide opportunities for crossing thresholds of guest and host relationships.

Stephen Dedalus' Search for Identity in Catholic Ireland

Cuevas, Cristina L 26 October 2015 (has links)
The purpose of my research was to explore the interplay between religion and art in James Joyce’s novel, A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN. My aim was to trace the development of the protagonist, Stephen Dedalus by analyzing how Catholicsim is an institution that forms him, yet must reject to realize his artistic potential. I researched Joyce’s background to gain an understanding of the exilic experience on the literature. Through the exilic lens, I realized that Catholicism was the predominant influence on Stephen’s need to embark on a self-imposed exile at the end of the novel. Complicating his decision is the fact that he does not stop believing in religious constructs such as heaven and hell. In conclusion I found by following his artistic longing, and turning away from the church he is committing a sin and, as a result, damning his soul.

Kierkegaard and the Longing for God

Graham, Glen A. 10 1900 (has links)

A large part of modern Western philosophy defines selfhood as the self’s ability to master itself and psychological wellbeing as the actualization of self-integration. However, as this thesis argues, Kierkegaard’s understanding of longing for God challenges this understanding human identity, especially as it is articulated by Kant and the German Idealists. Through an examination of Kierkegaard’s Concluding Unscientific Postscript and his religious discourses, the thesis argues that Kierkegaard’s theology of longing both undermines the modern psychology understanding of autonomous selfhood and preserves a qualified understanding of autonomy. The thesis argues that Kierkegaard’s theology has much in common with Augustine’s understanding of longing in The Confessions. For Kierkegaard, the longing for God is not just a heteronomous desire for self-annihilation in God. The longing in question is relational and intellectual; it is a response to God’s illuminative self-revelation and self-communicative love. But as relational, the life lived in longing for God is not wholly autonomous either. In prayer the soul experiences its own neediness and imperfections as it begins to experience God’s perfection. Broadly conceived, the thesis explores Kierkegaard’s understanding of this neither . . . nor . . . , that is, his understanding of a religious life lived neither fully autonomously nor fully heteronomously. The thesis argues further that much contemporary scholarship cannot take Kierkegaard’s relational understanding of the God-relationship seriously and therefore misinterprets his understanding of human identity.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
