Troubled Trinity: Love, Religion and Patriotism in Liam O'Flaherty's First Novel, <em>Thy neighbour's wife</em>.Jackson, Robin Heavner 16 August 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The focus of this research is a detailed analysis of Liam O'Flaherty's first published novel, Thy Neighbour's Wife, as an underlying autobiographical portrait depicted in the main character, Fr. Hugh McMahon. Although never touted as an autobiography, this study shows O'Flaherty drew upon his early cultural, historical, religious, and political influences in creating his main character. Primary and secondary sources, an ethnographic trip to Ireland, and a content analysis of the novel determined the findings.
The fictional McMahon faced difficult personal choices, subsequently coming to terms with past decisions. McMahon's foibles reflect O'Flaherty's early years. O'Flaherty wrote two acclaimed autobiographies, Shame the Devil and Two Years, during his later literary career. This analysis establishes that O'Flaherty used his main character in his first novel, Thy Neighbour's Wife, as a means of conveying in fictional form his own personal struggles, thus establishing this novel as a de facto autobiography.

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the roles played by Irish Catholic women in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. The primary goal is to examine the factors that determined the nature of those roles. To achieve this end, I used the information contained in the 1641 depositions, a collection of sworn statements given by the victims of the rebellion. The depositions are valuable in two ways. First, eyewitness testimony contained therein is generally reliable, and can be used to construct an accurate narrative of the rebellion. Second, less reliable hearsay evidence is crucial to understanding the fears of English and Scottish Protestants and their perceptions of female rebels. I was aided by the earlier efforts of historians such as Nicholas Canny and Mary O'Dowd. In the course of this thesis, I intended to argue that the actions of Irish Catholic women in the rebellion were largely determined by their social status, geographic location, and prior relationships between female rebels and their allies and victims.

The Effects of Divided Government on Women's Organizations' Political Activity in Developed DemocraciesWilson, Alexandria 01 January 2014 (has links)
This study examines the relationship between divided government and women's organizations' political activity. In the literature divided government is associated with political openness leading to a decline in the repression of alternative political views and increased organizational activity. In this thesis I hypothesize that divided government is related to increased participation in political activity by women's organizations. Political activity is expected to increase during periods of divided government due to increased opportunities to influence formal government as political parties and elected officials compete for public support. This study analyzes political activity by organizations associated with the women's movement in two developed democracies, the United States and Ireland during periods of (1) divided government and (2) periods of unified government in each country. This study focuses on activity revolving around the issues of reproductive rights and violence against women, two of the most salient issues to the women's movement. Organizational activity includes participation in protests, letter writing campaigns to political elites, and the endorsement of political candidates or parties by the National Organization for Women (NOW) and The Third Wave Foundation in the United States, and The National Women's Council of Ireland and The Irish Feminist Network in the Republic of Ireland. This study examines organizational activity in two cases of unified government controlling for partisanship of the executive, and one case of divided government in each country case. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that divided government is related to an increase in political activity by women's organizations in the United States. However, more research is needed to address alternative explanations for the level of political activity of women's organizations during periods of unified government. In addition, more research is needed to address explanations of political activity of women's organizations in Ireland.

The Northern Ireland Conflict Feasibility of 21st Century ReunificationO'Brien, Robert 01 August 2011 (has links)
The State of Northern Ireland has been home to a significant amount of violence between a minority of Catholic Irish nationalists and a majority of Protestant British unionists. As a result, violence has plagued the region, with the loss of over three thousand five hundred lives during the course of three decades, colloquially known as "the troubles." In 1998, the Belfast or "Good Friday" Agreement was signed by officials from The United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland to ensure a diplomatic means of cooperation amongst the various political parties of Northern Ireland, and disarmament of paramilitary groups. However, the desire for nationalists to unify the island and to seek total independence from the United Kingdom still endures. In spite of a significant decrease in violence, dissident republicans continue to target the Police Service of Northern Ireland, with the intent to disrupt the peace process; the people of Northern Ireland are still polarized regarding their political and national standings, which decrease the chances of Irish reunification in the near future. The intent of this thesis is to explore the feasibility of Irish reunification in the 21st century, and its reasons why a united Ireland will not be obtained. By examining the global policy towards terrorism after September 11th 2001, the recent net-immigration to Ireland preceded by the "Celtic Tiger" period in The Republic of Ireland's economic boon, and the complexities of the perceived identities in Northern Ireland, the unlikelihood of reunifying Ireland under one government, independent from the United Kingdom will be reiterated.

Filid, Fairies and Faith: The Effects of Gaelic Culture, Religious Conflict and the Dynamics of Dual Confessionalisation on the Suppression of Witchcraft Accusations and Witch-Hunts in Early Modern Ireland, 1533 – 1670Kramer, William 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The European Witch-Hunts reached their peak in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Betweeen 1590 and 1661, approximately 1500 women and men were accused of, and executed for, the crime of witchcraft in Scotland. England suffered the largest witch-hunt in its history during the Civil Wars of the 1640s, which produced the majority of the 500 women and men executed in England for witchcraft. Evidence indicates, however, that only three women were executed in Ireland between 1533 and 1670. Given the presence of both English and Scottish settlers in Ireland during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the dramatic discrepancy of these statistics indicate that conditions existed in early modern Ireland that tended to suppress the mechanisms that produced witchcraft accusations and larger scale witch-hunts.
In broad terms those conditions in Ireland were the persistence of Gaelic culture and the ongoing conditions of open, inter-religious conflict. In particular, two artifacts of Gaelic Irish culture had distinct impact upon Irish witchcraft beliefs. The office of the Poet, or fili (singular for filid), seems to have had a similar impact upon Gaelic culture and society as the shaman has on Siberian witchcraft beliefs. The Gaelic/Celtic Poet was believed to have magical powers, which were actually regulated by the Brehon Law codes of Ireland. The codification of the Poet’s harmful magic seems to have eliminated some of the mystique and menace of magic within Gaelic culture. Additionally, the persistent belief in fairies as the source of harmful magic remained untainted by Christianity throughout most of Ireland. Faeries were never successfully demonized in Ireland as they were in Scotland. The Gaelic Irish attributed to fairies most of the misfortunes that were otherwise blamed on witchcraft, including the sudden wasting away and death of children. Faerie faith in Ireland has, in fact, endured into the twentieth century. The ongoing ethno-religious conflict between the Gaelic, Catholic Irish and the Protestant “New English” settlers also undermined the need for witches in Ireland. The enemy, or “other” was always readily identifiable as a member of the opposing religious or ethnic group. The process of dual confessionalisation, as described by Ute Lotz-Huemann, facilitated the entrenchment of Catholic resistence to encroaching Protestantism that both perpetuated the ethno-religious conflict and prevented the penetration of Protestant ideology into Gaelic culture. This second effect is one of the reasons why fairies were never successfully associated with demons in Ireland. Witch-hunts were complex events that were produced and influenced by multiple causative factors. The same is true of those factors that suppressed witchcraft accusations. Enduring Gaelic cultural artifacts and open ethno-religious conflict were not the only factors that suppressed witchcraft accusations and witch-hunts in Ireland; they were, however, the primary factors.

The Organic Material Culture of Western Ulster: An Ethno-historical and Heritage Science ApproachMcElhinney, Peter J. January 2019 (has links)
This research attempts to describe the material culture of the Gaelic labouring classes living in western Ulster in the Late Medieval period. The research combines ethnohistorical contextual and technical scientific analysis of ‘chance’ finds discovered in the region’s bogs. Technical analysis dates fifteen museum objects, characterises the materials from which they were made, and explores their cultural significance. Absolute dating indicates that one third of the 15 objects analysed relate to the Gaelic lordships of late medieval western Ulster, with the remainder reflecting aspects of Iron Age and Post-Medieval material culture and related cultural pracrices. Contextual analysis of the later medieval objects and their find locations provides new insights into Gaelic Irish culture and landscape interactions in this period and place. In addition, the research explores the trajectory of indigenous materiality in western Ulster beyond the Late Medieval period. Catholicism and the Catholic Church in Contemporary Ireland : The Church-State Relationship, the Societal Role of Catholicism and the Applicability of Secularisation Theory in the Aftermath of the Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne ReportsStirling, Graeme January 2023 (has links)
Abstract Throughout the period of 1972-2022 and previously, Catholicism has been a robust aspect of Irish national culture and identity and the institutional Catholic church has enjoyed a degree of sociopolitical influence and extensive co-operation with the Irish state. This has led to characterisations of Ireland as an outlier amidst secularisation patterns worldwide, whilst the 2009 scandals following the publication of the Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne Reports into clerical sexual abuse have led to claims of the collapse of Irish Catholicism and the church. Both the former and latter depictions of the Irish case appear to be rooted in the conflation of overlapping theoretical and practical issues. At the theoretical level, the cultural role of Catholicism as an aspect of individual and community identity appears most relevant to its longevity but has been frequently conflated with religiosity, as measured by churchgoing, belief in divinity and prayer and other forms of religious participation reported via flawed quantitative methods. This appears to have led to Ireland’s mischaracterisation as a highly religious state. The unsuccessful application of modernisation-based secularisation theory to Ireland therefore appears to have been flawed. Re-examining the Irish case reveals that, whilst secularisation theory does not prove adequate, some of its predicted outcomes are observable via significant shifts in the sociopolitical outlook of Irish Catholics and their rejection of clerical authority prior to the scandals. However, the continued prevalence of Catholic practice and identity show that this does not represent the predicted rejection of religious affiliation, thus strengthening the case for the key significance of Catholicism’s social and cultural role and the inapplicability of secularisation theory. The collapse of the church since 2009 also appears questionable, with legal and practical factors such as constitutional exemptions, ownership of schools and policy consultation via the Structured Church-State Dialogue Framework complicating the church-state dynamic. The state’s approach appears to be primarily rooted in pragmatism and a reluctance to meet the cost and workload of altering the status quo, rather than in the perceived views of the electorate, and has stagnated following a brief period of backlash after the Reports. As such, both Catholicism as an aspect of society and culture and the institutional church, as considered wholly separate from one another, are likely to remain robust in the near term.

"I like to jump in muddy puddles" : An investigation of preschool children's perspectives on the outdoors as a learning environment in an Irish context.Tracey, Claire January 2023 (has links)
The study investigates preschool children’s perspectives on the outdoors as a learning environment in an Irish context. The aim is to gain preschool children’s perspectives on their outdoor learning environment as too often children’s perspectives are not represented in research. The research aims to answer questions regarding how children engage with the outdoor environment, how the environment affords them different possibilities and what parts of the environment the children deem important. This study is a qualitative study using different methods to gain the children’s perspectives. The methods include participant observations, photography tours and semi-structured interviews. The research was conducted in three outdoor preschools in Ireland, a total of 45 children participated. The findings of the research show that children are very creative in the way in which they use their preschool environments. Outdoor spaces were where the children engaged in physical activities and imaginative play in the outdoor environments, revealing the multifaceted engagement of children. The environment also afforded the children many sensory experiences which resonated differently among the children. The children also placed importance on the relationships they have formed within the preschool with friends and teachers. The connection children had with nature was also evident throughout the results and reflected their curiosity about their surroundings. Children from different preschools seem to have many similar experiences while also having individual and unique experiences of their own. It is evident while shared experiences exist among the participants each child’s experience is distinct in its own way. The study is significant as it highlights the importance and need for young children to be a part of the research process and how their opinions are important as they are the ones with first hand experiences. Ultimately this study shows the pivotal role children’s perspectives play in understanding their experiences in outdoor educational environments.
