Taking Action to Digitize Anew : The case of the SÖFUK art database and the implications of obsolescence in the public sector

Nylund, Heidi January 2022 (has links)
The thesis sets out to examine a digitization project of an obsolete art database that was issued by the Finnish joint municipal authority Finlands Svenska Förbund för Utbildning och Kultur (SÖFUK) and KulturÖsterbotten through questions on obsolescence, the reasoning behind using an obsolete database for so long, elements that characterize digitization work in municipal settings and the challenges such a project brings forth. The SÖFUK art database functions as a case study that is being examined through action research supported by previous research on obsolescence and the different approaches to digitization within the humanities; mass, critical, and slow digitization. The goal of the digitization project is to transfer the data from the old MS Access 97 art database to the modern solution Katalogen, and to take new photographs of the artworks because of their unfavourable quality. The goal is hence to digitize the art database anew. The steps taken to digitize the art database are described throughout the digitization process. With the help of a constructed analytical tool supported by previous research on obsolescence, the old art database is analyzed and discussed to answer the question on which types of obsolescence that could be found regarding the database. The thesis is also supported by previous research on the digitization approaches mass, critical and slow digitization, with slow digitization being the favoured approach for the nature of this digitization project. The results show that various findings of obsolescence could be noted in the old art database. Elements of digitization in municipalities can be linked to communication, time management and cooperation. The challenges vary from light being reflected in plexiglass while photographing to difficulties localizing artworks in the municipalities. Why the obsolete art database was used for so long by SÖFUK and KulturÖsterbotten was that an external resource was needed to do the tedious work of localizing the artworks and travel to the fourteen municipalities to photograph each artwork.

Integrating Change Through Documentation of Experience for Immersive Media

arden, sasha 08 August 2024 (has links)
Immersive media (IM) is a class of technologies that aim to create an immersive environment for viewers, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR or XR), and 360° or panoramic projection installations. The preservation of immersive media is a growing field of research and practice, whether for historical reference of these technologies, or for re-exhibition of artistic/creative works. IM benefits from existing strategies developed for preservation of complex digital and physical media such as software-based art and installation artworks, but the unique characteristics of IM lead to unique preservation needs. Exploring how these needs may be met through expanded documentation and cataloging practices prompts reflection on how such changes could set larger institutional shifts into motion.

St-Pierre, François 08 1900 (has links)
In 2015, I conducted fieldwork on St. James Way. As is demonstrated by Victor Turner’s theoretical work, it is this paper’s belief that liminal phenomena, that are manifested during rites of passage such as St. James Way, provide precious insight into the daily life from which it arises from, namely, social structure. The study of extraordinary temporality here is justified thus, by its interdependence to daily life. In fact, liminal phenomena are known to frame crises in daily life. Results of the fieldwork conducted on St. James Way’s extraordinary temporality led to the observation that the impression of ‘being in the moment’ is a prevalent theme amongst pilgrims. The impressive upsurge of pilgrims walking the paths to Santiago, at a time of secularization and individualization, raises questions. If rites of passage are indeed mechanism acting like pressure releasing valve, to which crisis do they owe this surge? Secondly, which aspects of this pilgrimage explain its current appeal? First, it will be argued that St. James Way’s pilgrimage establishes itself as an anti-structure, or put otherwise, an extraordinary temporality. For the purpose of this demonstration, an overview of the stages pilgrims go through will be presented, namely: separation, crisis, adaptation and communitas. Furthermore, we will see that the impression of being in the moment marks the threshold of the communitas. To explain this ‘impression’, this paper invokes a psychological perspective that St. James Way delivers a proper experience of flow. According to Csikszentmihalyi, the flow is known to trigger a feeling of ‘being in the moment’. On the contrary, this research supports the thesis that the structure of daily life fails to deliver an equally optimal experience. Therefore, this paper investigates the processes through which the society of acceleration hinders the experience of flow. Among these processes, emphasis is given here to the impending obsolescence of knowledge in the age of information technology and the altered perception induced by technologies, more specifically, digital devices.

Analysis of Knowledge Obsolescence in Ensemble-Based Component Systems / Analysis of Knowledge Obsolescence in Ensemble-Based Component Systems

Pavliš, Filip January 2015 (has links)
Designing Resilient Distributed embedded Systems is a challenging task. One of the design issues is to guarantee correct behavior of the system during the runtime. It demands verification that information propagated through the system is reliable. The goal of this thesis is a research and implementation of an analysis that should identify obsolescence of variables due to delays caused by scheduling and communication in real-time systems. Analysis will be designed for Ensemble-Based Component System (EBCS) semantics because it enables precise specification and analysis of important properties. The main problem is to find a suitable input model of the analysis and find its possible limits. Effort should be put in balancing between the level of abstraction given to a RDS developer and power of the analysis itself. The main benefit of the analysis will be detection of situations in which data processed in RDS are outdated and can cause incorrect behavior of particular components.

L'occitan dans la Drôme : état des lieux, geolinguistique et perspectives sociolinguistiques / The occitan in Drôme : state of the art, geolinguistic and sociolinguistics prospects

Morin, Laetitia 23 September 2016 (has links)
Nowadays the situation of regional languages raises many questions and more particularly in border and transiting linguistic areas such as the Drôme area. Being in contact with two Gallo-Roman linguistic estates, the Occitan and the Franco-Provencal but also with the French language, Drôme territory is rich from its plurality, both linguistic and cultural. Though at a time when family transmission and use of Occitan has become sporadic and isolated, it is necessary to draw out an overall state of the art of the language within institutions, especially at schools, but also within the linguistic community. Identifying the speakers’ various profiles, measuring the liveliness of the language use, evaluating linguistic shifts and bringing out the linguistic representations did set out a holistic picture of the area. The linguistic representation of the Drôme area is just the same as the territory itself, as complex and manifold: with both an identity and language encounter and the desire to save it through teaching.

Destruktiv Design

Nihlwing, Jakob, Björkstrand, Philip January 2017 (has links)
This thesis takes a deeper look into customer behaviours when it comes to buying new mobile phones. We take a look at four main types of planned obsolescence we’ve found, which include: economic obsolescence, obsolescence of function, obsolescence of desirability and obsolescence of quality. With a questionnaire and focus group study we try to find out the underlying reasons why users buy new phones while their old ones are still functional. Since this is not a new subject, we try to map the problems we encounter in our study to the four already defined forms described above, and we try to see if there are other forms that are not yet defined. What we found out was that these four categories hold up very well, but are not as separate as one would have thought when reading. While we find out many reasons why people change their phones we do not offer a solution. But we do offer a better understanding of the problem and hope the consumer will take part of the knowledge.

Caobelli, Leandro Fontoura January 2016 (has links)
This study approaches concepts and works that interrelate theory and practice in the process of creating the project “some little oasis of fatality amid a wilderness of error”, linked to my master degree research in Visual Poetry, in which I explore personal digital files and their implications in the public and private spheres through the appropriation of discards Hard Disks as e-waste. The method for creating this series of works was the search, recovery, compilation and creation of experiments; search for discards discarded as electronic waste, recovery and compilation of images in collections (visual catalogs) and creation of audiovisual experiments as installations, websites and artist books. The experiments carried out evoke questions and reflections on contemporary everyday routines such as archiving; privacy and image surveillance in the digital / virtual environment; the excess of visual production from mobile devices, among others. This reflection generated 3 meetings-workshops of reflection and production, which resulted in the creation of 10 collaborative works. From this group of experiments, 3 works were selected by me to be created in the process of co-authorship.

Interchange Intervention: Inhabiting Urban Highway Infrastructure

Ashraf, Mohammed Imtiaz 18 November 2013 (has links)
Urban highway infrastructure in North America has been singularly designed for the automobile, severing parts of the urban fabric, blighting our once-thriving city centres and resulting in spaces that are void of the human scale. The Cogswell Interchange in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada is such an infrastructure, cutting through the downtown core and heritage district. This thesis investigates the Cogswell Interchange in an attempt to animate and enliven a dead urban space, reducing traffic and bringing new activity and life to the street. Reappropriating parts of vehicular infrastructure for cyclist and pedestrian use and creating a variety of activities and programs (gallery, gym, restaurant, park) enables an increased connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists and brings a more human-scale urbanity to the site. The infrastructure itself becomes a framework upon which to build, revisioned as an active, vibrant place which people can experience with a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation.
