Reconstruction, Performance, Transmission. Sketching a Methodology of the Restoration of Experimental and Artists’ Film / Ricostruzione, performance, trasmissione.

Camporesi, Enrico 13 June 2016 (has links)
This dissertation aims to question the methodological tools and theoretical foundations of the practice of restoration in order to apply them to a body of work often left at the margins of this disciplinary field: experimental and artists’ film. Focusing on the years 1960-1980, it will examine works by Bruce Conner, Carolee Schneemann, Anthony McCall, and Paul Sharits, among others. Conceived and organized as a possible dialogue between theoretical assessment and the practical necessities of specific works, this research defends an open and dynamic methodology of restoration much like the objects herein considered. Through archival research, this dissertation will confront issues of textual reconstruction (starting from literary philology), performance and installation, scholarly debates concerning the materiality of artworks (problematizing the positions of restoration theorist Cesare Brandi), and the question of technological obsolescence. Mobilizing concepts from different fields considered as complementary (art history, aesthetics, the technological history of film), this dissertation seeks to describe the hermeneutical activity underlying any restoration process. It is starting from this hypothesis, which links theory and practice, that it will consider the specific issues accompanying the life of filmic objects.

Obsolescence et réinvention du cinéma argentique à l’âge du numérique / Obsolescence and reinvention of analogue cinema in the digital age

Nicodemos, Monise 25 February 2019 (has links)
Since the 1990s, in the face of digital expansion, analogue cinema has been confrontedwith economic, political, and poetic issues of obsolescence. Our study aimsto explore the ambiguity, ambivalence and potential of obsolescence, which opensup new fields of possibilities for the reinvention of analogue cinema. We are particularlyinterested in this period of reinvention of medium-film from the manufactureof the handmade emulsion technique, the reactivation of the pinhole, and theexhibition of analogue cinema machinery. Viewed through a historical lens andconceived as an articulation between aesthetics and technique, this work proposesa theoretical assessment of laboratory practices, the camera obscura, the pinholeand the machine, and an analysis of a body of current work realized using thesefilm tools. Through interviews with artists, we aim to illuminate their creative processesand reveal the techniques involved in the artworks. Finally, we will showhow thanks to obsolescence, artists today are reinventing analogue cinema in thedigital age and maintaining a memory of all its technicality and machinery.

O INSTRUMENTO DA LOGÍSTICA REVERSA DE RESÍDUOS ELETROELETRÔNICOS NO CONTEXTO DA OBSOLESCÊNCIA PROGRAMADA E PERCEBIDA: UM OLHAR A PARTIR DA CIDADE DE SANTA MARIA/RS / THE REVERSAL LOGISTICS INSTRUMENT OF CONSUMER ELECTRONICS WASTE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE AND PERCEIVED: ANANALYSIS BY THE CITY OF SANTA MARIA/RS

Mota, Luiza Rosso 29 December 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study is based on the Law 12.305/2010 (National politics on Solid Waste), which has progressed in in the field of sustainability, by transmitting a strong educational and awareness value. However, the increasing demand and offer of new technologies has caused in the population a big and increasing desire for consumption. In this sense, the objective of the research came to life, through the Law nº 12.305/2010, from the extension of the instrument in the reverse logistics of the consumer electronics in face of the consuming society and the capitalism market, both agents that use the planned obsolescence and perceived in spite of environmental balance. The central question proposed to be answered is presented in the following form: aware the ecological caos created/caused by the consuming society and the capitalist market, which incorporate the practice of planned obsolescence and perceived, it is asked if the reverse logistics instrument, brought by the Law that set up the National politics on Solid Waste, is it enough to strike/reduce the excess of consumer electronics surplus? Bringing to the real case, what is the situation of the consumer electronics waste in the city of Santa Maria/RS? The approach method utilized was the dialect. The theoretical framework presents itself from a base critical theory Zigmunt Baumam and Enrique Leff. The procedure method adopted was the case study, and the metodological instrument to data collection was the interview guidelines technic. It was studied, iniatialy, the consuming society and the capitalist market, emphasizing the planned obsolescence strategies programmed and perceived, and the cultural aspect tied to the consum; later, it was made a counterpoint in face of the National politics on Solid Waste and their main directives, explaining the collectors of recyclable material situation, the post-consumer responsibility and the shared liability, and contextualizing the reverse logistics instrument regarding the consumer electronics waste and, finaly, it was presented the counterpoint through the situation of the consumer electronics waste in the city of Santa Maria/RS. In the end, it was observed that the reverse logistics of the consumer electronics waste was not enough to strike or reduce the exceeding of consumer electronics waste, only contributes to the reducing the generation of these waste, in a minor percentage, because the planned obsolescence strategies and perceived practice by the market prevail in spite of the environment preservation and protection. There is a long road to go in the city of Santa Maria to reduce the distance between text (of law) and context (environmental reality) and to reach the desired minimum in the environmental related questions, with respect to consumer electronics waste.

Determination of the timeline for U.S. Army aviation systems to reach operational obsolescence following termination of modernization funding

Dupree, Ron D. 06 1900
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / Identifying, countering, andpreventing operational obsolescence is a challenging but vital task for personnel involved in the design, acquisition and support of military equipment. In this thesis, I define the concept of operational obsolescence and show quantitative relationships between modernization funding timelines and operational obsolescence. Only if we truly understand obsolescence can we best combat its onset and effects. I use example data from both legacy and current Army Aviation Systems to draw conclusions about the impacts of particular modernization timelines on the various forms of obsolescence that cause operational obsolescence. I then make recommendations concerning the optimal modernization strategies for current and future aviation systems in order to facilitate the Army's ability to field and sustain the most tactically and logistically superior weapon systems possible. Using first principles, I construct Life Models based on hazard functions for each of the different forms of obsolescence. I then combine these models into an overall model, and discuss the design of a data system to estimate model parameters. / http://hdl.handle.net/10945/998 / Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army

Proposta de método de referência aplicado a retrofitting de máquinas-ferramentas / Proposal for a reference method applied to the retrofitting of machine tools

Plotegher, Silvio Luiz 18 December 2012 (has links)
The obsolescence of Machine Tools (MT) may be defined is a natural process of aging in this type of equipment. This process comprises a series of technological degradation, which settles and occurs across the entire and physical structure of a MT, regardless of the technology used. The degradations may, however, be due to several factors such as usage, application, machining process and so on. The technology aspects are more evident when analyzing the machines Computerized Numerical Control (CNC). By the other hand the CNC is an equipment which naturally contributes with a constant evolution, but they often cant be easily incorporated into an existing machine without a procedure for retrofitting previously defined. A process of retrofitting can be defined and considered as a process incorporates technology resulting in increments of technology to a MT. However, the addressing of such process is usually applied without any models or tools within a process of decision making. More recently, several studies have shown trends making a connection between MT and sustainability without, however, defining templates for such process. The studies of all aspects of the behavior of an existing MT, even with its limitations, suggest the resources of new technologies can help to improve in general all aspects of their productivity and therefore contribute to a more sustainable production. However, this must be done from a methodology that guides the process of decision making. This decision process represents a process that results from a technological gain in a MT or not. Thus, this work proposes a reference method applied to retrofitting machines by defining a series coefficients and numerical indices whose results intends to be used as a tool for helping a decision-making process.

Rama, Jander Luiz January 2018 (has links)
In the present research I propose theoretical-practical reflection, confronting some aspects of the philosophy of technique, which discuss the relationship between man and his technology in different periods of history, in dialogue with central ideas of engineering and science fiction visionaries such as Jules Verne, George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Nikola Tesla, Gerald Bull, Yona Friedman among others. In this context, I present the series of works entitled Engenharia Perversa as a possibility of crossing between technical drawing and multiple, establishing relations with works of other artists that use technical language, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Leon Ferrari, Regina Silveira and Marcel Duchamp. As a basis for the dialectical construction established in this thesis, I point out cases where science fiction precedes the progress that will be achieved by engineering and architecture. In the opposite sense, this thesis tries to investigate occurrences in which unconstructed engineering projects, when they become only unproven ideas, point to the technical drawing as a source of fictional productions. From these premises, this research problematizes the present artistic production in relation to the fictional field, investigating possibilities of simulacra established by the use of obsolete technologies for the production of images.

Obsolescência e renovação do uso do solo nos centros das grandes cidades e o processo de acumulação capitalista: economia e sociedade no espaço urbano / Obsolescence and renewal of land use in the centers of large cities and the process of capitalist accumulation: economy and society in the urban space

Reis, Lucimara Flavio dos 28 July 2015 (has links)
The research aims to identify the determinants of the phenomenon of obsolescence in the Centre of urban agglomerations. Based on the understanding of the transformation of land use, which we assume that can result in obsolescence, we seek to establish a link between aspects of social organization and the spatial conformation of the city, particularly the city of São Paulo, here taken as an antithetical case when compared to the cities of Shanghai and Guangzhou. To understand the processes of obsolescence and of urban renewal, especially where such processes are more intense, as to say in the core of urban agglomerations, emphasis shall be given to the forces that determine the production of space, mainly in what concerns the relation established between State and Market in regulating the urban land uses.

Obsolescência programada, práticas de consumo e design: uma sondagem sobre bens de consumo / Programmed obsolescence, consumer practices and design: a survey on consumer goods

Assumpção, Lia 10 November 2017 (has links)
This exploratory qualitative research tried to identify planned obsolescence\'s manifestations in the Brazilian market, as well as the main products related to it. The way consumer goods have been produced and sold since the planned obsolescence\'s implementation is leading society to an environmental limitation in terms of natural resources and alarming growth in the generation of electronic waste. Consumption the way it is and manufacturing are questioned, faced with this limitation. Considering design as an activity intrinsically engaged in social issues, it can be an important tool to modify this scenario. The research was based on planned obsolescence and on conceptual parameters by Packard, Papanek and Slade, which allowed the identification of planned obsolescence through consumption practices. As a method, a questionnaire to identify consumer perception and interviews with designers tried to establish a relationship between the studied phenomenon and the design. The most cited products were cell phones and computers. Durability proved to be unimportant for devices with rapid technological evolution such as cell phones. For products without this technological characteristic, durability proved to be rare, as according to the research results there is a great association between cheap and fragile materials, which compromise the durability of the products. Although the result allows to identify the three types of programmed obsolescence determined by the authors -- artificial, psychological and technological --, the research concluded that the concept of programmed obsolescence, in the way it was created, is so assimilated today that it ends up making the term itself obsolete. This is because today products do not have to be made to break to be changed and often discarded.
