[en] HEARING INHERITED SILENCES / [pt] ESCUTAR SILÊNCIOS HERDADOS

MAYUMI SENRA AIBE 24 July 2017 (has links)
[en] Unsettled issues silenced for decades may still resonate today, crossing generations and life experiences even when they are distant in time and space. Years of silence are not simply empty for they accumulate almost imperceptibly. Though extremely subtle, they have materiality, affecting those who inherited them - be it by sheer chance or birth. This dissertation takes inspiration from Japanese artist Yamashiro Chikako s work dealing with war legacy in Japan s southernmost island of Okinawa. These twelve short essays alternate between academic research and pieces of memory and fiction in order to reflect on artistic ways of hearing inherited silences. The texts highlight art s creative potential to perceive synesthetic aspects of silence (especially those related to hearing, sight, and touch), and its ability to cope with whatever was left outside official registers.

An Ethnological Mapping of Okinawa’s Kume Villagers in Ryukyu from 1392 to Present: Language, Religion, Occupations and Identity

Lu,ching hua Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵詞:沖繩 閩人三十六姓 認定 認同 / Kume Village was initially formed by 36 Fujian clans in the 14th Century when the Ryukyu Islands became one of the tributaries to the Ming Empire of China. Kume Villagers had a great influence on the Ryukyu Kingdom in diplomacy, culture, thought, and belief perspectives. The tenets of this dissertation focus on the development of the people of Kume Village; their careers, the evolution of their languages, their system of assigning names to individuals, and how they related first to China, then later to the Okinawa Kingdom, Japan, and how they were perceived by Okinawans throughout this time. The dissertation consists of six chapters. The first chapter, "The Kume Village", writes where Kume villagers come from originally, its past and present social organization, and the Kume Village geographical position. The second chapter, "The Kume Villagers’ Social Niche", mainly describes the important role Kume villagers play in the tribute system as diplomats. The third chapter, "The Naming of a Kume Villager", discusses the Kume Villagers naming system and its evolution. The fourth chapter "The Kume Villager’s Language” analyzes these 4 languages: Southern Fujian, Chinese Mandarin, Ryukyu Islands, and Japanese as they are imported and integrated by the Kume community. The fifth chapter, "The Kume Villagers Religious Beliefs", analyzes the Kume Villagers worship of ancestors, Tian Fei beliefs, as well as how the Ryukyu Islands folklores and the Japanese folklores influenced Kume Villagers. The third, fourth, and fifth chapters test the validity of name, language, and general belief mores as robust ethnic boundaries. The sixth chapter, "Caste-assignment and Social Identity", narrates the establishment of distinct castes and government relegation of the Kume Villagers into an elite class and analyzes how this policy influenced Kume Villagers. Applying time and several ethnic features as its frames of reference, this dissertation debates in detail the development of the culture of Kume Villagers parallel to and as the result of their interaction with Okinawa society in the last 600 years. Keywords:Okinawa, 36 Fujian clans, Chinese overseas, Identity

No. of bitstreams: 1 6617.pdf: 10789934 bytes, checksum: f18abde4f34f9f04cbe7ca3fa916b71c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-24 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / Japan has been permeated by the myth of ethnic homogeneity. The idea that homogeneity is present even in countries receiving "nikkeys" immigrants, as is the case in Brazil. However, a few decades it has been possible to note that the multiplicity and diversity are also part of the japanese reality. This diversity makes the group think of themselves and others to think as opposites. Thus, Campo Grande becomes field investigation of this heterogeneity, since it possesses two distinct groups - Okinawans and "naichi" (japanese) - in an opposition movement and aggregation throughout history. When thinking of a "Japanese unit" is over for not paying attention to details that make up the relations between the groups involved (Okinawans, non-Okinawans and non-western). The purpose of this research is therefore to understand how notions of family and belonging can build the oppositions and differences between Japanese immigrants and their descendants.

Schultz, Oscar January 2018 (has links)
Defending against a modern amphibious landing is one of the most difficult operations in warfare. Many have tried but very few have succeeded to throw an assaulting landing force back into the sea. This essay is an attempt to create deeper understanding for anti-landing defense by using Milan Vego’s theory on littoral warfare in a case study of the landings in Salerno 1943 and on Okinawa 1945. This is in order to examine if this theory on marine warfare in coastal regions can be used to create deeper understanding for defense against a modern amphibious assault. With a current trend towards increasing military interests in littoral regions, this essay intends to bring an up-to-date contribution to the theoretical foundation of marine warfare in littoral regions, and more specifically coastal defense.   The analysis shows that Vego’s theory did create deeper understanding of the two cases and particularly regarding command, inter-service cooperation and sea control or sea denial. These concepts have in both cases proven successfully practiced by the assaulting force, while the defenders have failed to benefit from them.
