There is a series of knowledge and knowledge that are used by teachers during their professional activity, that is, there are knowledge and knowledge that serve as the basis for the office of being a teacher. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the process of construction of this knowledge and knowledge, as well as the construction of the professionalism of four Geography professors who work in Higher Education in the State of Goiás, two Federal University of Goiás in Goiânia (UFG) and two University State of Goiás (UEG) in Anápolis. It is based on Shulman's studies and his knowledge base for teaching, in which this knowledge is divided into knowledge of specific content, general didactic knowledge, context knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of content. The thesis here is that the teacher-teacher in the context of his teaching practice mediates the dialogue between the teaching knowledge, that is, between the specific knowledge of the discipline with the pedagogical knowledge in the construction of the professional knowledge made effective by the students of the Geography degree in initial formation. It was sought to understand the knowledge that Geography teachers must possess, to develop a work in which there is dialogue and articulation between the various existing teaching knowledge and thus promote their professionalism. The following data collection instruments were used: bibliographical reading, analysis of documents such as the Pedagogical Project of the two courses and analysis of the course plans of the disciplines, observation of the classes offered in the degree courses of the two universities of that field Research and interview with the four teachers observed. The result of the study points out that the formative process of the Geography teacher should be based on a teacher that articulates the teaching knowledge in its training practice, as well as encouraging the future teachers the same attitude, that is, a teacher who possesses and Construct pedagogical knowledge of geographic content in its formation.

The fabric of this research is based on a qualitative approach, more precisely in the case study, since it addresses a specific case, inserted in the social, economic and political. To do so, use has been made of the semi-structured interview as a methodological tool, with students of the last two periods and teachers pedagogical disciplines. As treatment technique and data analysis, made use of content analysis. Discusses public policies for education and how these affect higher education and, consequently, the training of teachers, models, trends and settings such training course in Literature. Conceptualize themselves teaching knowledge and teaching and reflected on the concepts of language. Finally, we seek to discuss and analyze the pedagogical training in the light of representations of learners and teachers, as well as suggestions that may indicate ways to seek improvements in the teaching-learning pedagogical knowledge. The representations of the subjects of the research show some weaknesses in teacher training, teaching as essentially theoretical, detached from reality and identity with a bachelor's degree. However, it is clear that there is a change perspective, rooted in questions of students and teachers in the daily struggle of pedagogical disciplines belonging to the Department of Arts, so that the course be strengthened as Bachelor and the pedagogical win a prominent place.

Edyane Maria de Souza Gonçalves 04 May 2015 (has links)
Studies and research about the teacher training on various aspects, have assumed large importance in the educational literature, especially in non-formal education, as some cases of working with the elderly. It is believed that teaching is not only to transfer knowledge, because the learning process issues also the capacity that human beings have to develop and share experiences, which consist in knowledge. In the context of education, approach the vocational training of teachers proposes understand their learning process, which implies a continuous exercise in their professional practice. This research aimed to investigate how a group of teachers from different areas of knowledge articulate their knowledge in their work with elderly. It is a qualitative research, type case study, conducted in permanent education program for the elderly, using as instruments the technique of focus groups, life history interviews and systematic observation. The data were subjected to content analysis and discussed based on theoretical teacher training area. The results indicate that the study group was composed of ten teachers from the areas of Psychology, Nursing, Language, Physical Education, Mathematics, Computer and Physical Therapy, they are 55 years old on average, two males and eight females. All work directly in courses, workshops and educational activities for mature adults and seniors, although only three have specialization in gerontology. The systematization of the reports have resulted in the following thematic categories: reasons to performance in the program, professional challenges linked to that work, perception of teachers in relation to old age, the presence of affection between teachers and students, training and teacher knowledge, teaching practice, learning and knowledge of teachers. It was found that learn and develop is part of a continuous process of teacher education. Working with this population supports self-development of teachers, encouraging them to be responsible for their continued learning and to be available to new experiences. We have concluded that, although the profissionals dont have graduation and expertise in educational gerontology the articulation of knowledge these teachers relate to their life experiences and initial graduation as important bases of work in teaching. The data corroborates the results of other research about the necessity for training of human resources in gerontology, to attend the demands of the aging population as the educational area.

The Impact of a Long Term, 5E Inquiry-Based Professional Development on Content and Pedagogical Knowledge in Eighth-Grade Science Teachers

Waid, Julie 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the impact of a long-term, 5E inquiry-based professional development on content and pedagogical knowledge in eighth-grade science teachers in Texas. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected via university designed reflective prompts, science content pretests and post-tests, and a classroom observation instrument. Results showed the professional development had a statistically significant impact on teachers' content knowledge in earth science, less significant impact in content knowledge in physical science and that teachers' levels of inquiry-based practice were in the early stages. The teachers' reflections of the professional development's impact indicated self-identified growth in their content knowledge and an impact on their understanding of inquiry-based classroom instructional practice. The findings suggest inquiry-based professional development has an impact on teachers' content and pedagogical knowledge, specifically regarding conveying content effectively, concept interconnection, lesson design, and teachers' opportunities to experience inquiry-based learning themselves before implementing it in their classrooms. The study's implications for further research include examinations of professional learning opportunities at local district and campus levels to identify and incorporate science teachers' existing levels of content and inquiry-based pedagogical knowledge and provide opportunities for practice to incorporate the pedagogy in classrooms.

Exploring problems encountered in the teaching and learning of statistics in grade 11

Makwakwa, Eva 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore problems encountered in the teaching and learning of statistics in grade 11 and to offer ways of addressing them. A convenient sample of 100 grade 11 mathematics teachers and 448 grade 11 mathematics learners participated in the study. A descriptive survey design was used. Data were collected from the teachers using a teacher questionnaire, classroom observation schedule and teacher interview, and from learners through the use of a learner questionnaire, classroom observation schedule, diagnostic test and learner interview. The validity and reliability of all these instruments was established. Descriptive statistics and frequencies were used to analyse learner questionnaires, teacher questionnaires and learners‟ responses to a diagnostic test. Teacher and learner interviews were transcribed and classified according to themes. Classroom observations were analysed by using themes and checking for similarities and differences. The results showed that teachers had difficulty with the interpretation and calculation of measures of dispersion; representation and interpretation of data on graphs or plots; determining the five number summary; constructing and interpreting probability diagrams and tables; and interpreting probability terminology. Also, the results showed that learners experienced difficulties when using graphs to predict the results; interpreting and determining measures of dispersion; computation of quartiles when the total number of data values was even; representing data on graphs or plots; interpreting and determining measures of central tendency; constructing and interpreting probability graphs and tables; and interpreting probability terminology. The results found possible causes of the teachers‟ difficulties to be (1) their lack of statistics content knowledge; (2) inadequate textbooks; (3) in-service programmes which did not cover statistical topics, or which did not pay adequate attention to probability; and (4) teachers failure to attend these in-service teacher workshops. Further, the findings of the study were that the probable causes of learners‟ difficulties were (1) inadequate teaching of statistics topics in previous grades; (2) teachers‟ lack of content knowledge in statistics meant they had difficulty explaining concepts to learners; (3) inadequate learning material and learners‟ inability to use the statistics function mode on their calculators; and (4) learners‟ lack of conceptual knowledge of certain aspects of statistics. Lastly, the results of the study found that the possible ways to address the problems in the teaching and learning of statistics in grade 11 to be: (1) teachers should receive financial support from their schools/districts to attend in-service education and training programmes; (2) textbooks should be well written (provide thorough explanations) and contain all the information necessary to teach data handling and probability (i.e. formulae, more examples); (3) in-service teacher programmes should meet the needs of the teachers by offering topics that teachers find difficult to teach; and (4) more and longer inset programmes on probability, preferably five-day workshops, should be arranged. / Mathematics Education / M. Understanding the impact of a reflective practice-based continuing professional development programme on Kuwaiti primary teachers' integration of ICT

Mohammad, Hasibah January 2014 (has links)
The main theme of the study is exploring and understanding the impact of an innovative continuing professional development model for integrating ICT into classroom pedagogy. The focus is on the relationship between teachers’ beliefs, knowledge and pedagogic practice in the process of developing and adopting new knowledge and skills to cope with 21st century education. The study explores the 'future schools' primary teachers’ education, in-service training, status, beliefs, knowledge, and skills of using ICT in practice in the Kuwait context. The finding from the exploratory study shows that teachers’ lack of Technological, Pedagogical and Content knowledge TPACK and that this impacts on their capacity to improve their pedagogic practice. The study applied a social-constructivist approach to understand the process of change in the nine participants' teachers' beliefs, knowledge through an innovative continuing professional development model, and stimulating teachers to develop a reflective practice skills focusing on improving pedagogic practice and using ICT. A case study approach was used as the methodology of the study to develop an understanding of the process of change in the nine participant teachers' reflection on and experienced of the effects of adopting alternative pedagogic practice and integrating ICT. The numerous small findings from the quantitative and qualitative methods applied to the six months of continuing professional development involving nine primary teachers come under four main themes: 1) In-service teachers' beliefs and knowledge development, 2) Classroom pedagogy for autonomy with ICT integration, 3) Constraints affecting future schools’ teachers' integration of ICT, and 4) The key principles of an RP-BCPD model for teachers CPD in Kuwait. The understandings from the findings of the study show that the quality of the CPD for improving teachers' pedagogic practice is affected by the socio-cultural context of the 'future schools'. The study shows that the nine participant teachers can develop effective alternative pedagogic practice and successfully integrate ICT, when they are empowered to reflect, inquire into their practice, and learn from each other and from cross-cultural best practice. The unique finding of the study indicated that the nine participant teachers experiences some difficulties with engaging in the change process because of classroom cultural context such as: teachers' TPACK knowledge and competences, curriculum overload, and classroom size. Finally, the finding shows that providing the participant teachers with reflective practice as the base of CPD programme within schools context linked learning theory to improve pedagogic practice.

Aspectos do conhecimento pedagógico do conteúdo (PCK) de Botânica de professores de Biologia após formação continuada em Educação a Distância / Aspects of pedagogical knowledge of content (PCK) of Botany of Biology teachers after continuing education in the modality Distance Education

Franco, Carolina de Oliveira 21 September 2017 (has links)
O professor necessita de outros conhecimentos associados, além do específico, como o conhecimento dos alunos, do contexto e pedagógico geral, para ter melhores condições de desenvolver e refletir sobre sua prática docente / This dissertation aimed to broaden the knowledge about the long-term evaluation of continuing courses for Distance Education, gathering Botanical teaching and the perception of teachers of public São Paulo state network schools about the aspects of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). The specific objective was to evaluate the perception of these teachers who participated in the Botanical discipline - part of the specialization course of Biology teaching (EspBio) and also part of the program REDEFOR (Rede São Paulo de Formação Docente) - about the influence of such discipline in their current teaching practice, analyzed through the aspects related to PCK, according to Rollnich et al. (2008) model: 1. Specialized knowledge of Botanic; 2. The importance of Botanical teaching in high school; 3. Choice of Teaching Practices, Strategies, and Didactic Materials; 4. Selection of Specific Contents; 5. Difficulties of the Students related to Botanic learning. In order to achieve these objectives, we used virtual questionnaires given to all participants (about 800) of the two versions (2010/2011 and 2011/2012) of the course, and we obtained a return of 75 participants, a response rate of 9.3%. The responses of the eight questions were submitted to the content analysis according to Bardin (2009), where the data were grouped into five Analysis Axes (EA), corresponding to the aspects of the PCK highlighted in the specific objective above. The main findings regarding these axes are: EA1. 93% of the participants declared that there was an increase in their knowledge about Botanic after they did the discipline, mainly, in the conceptual improvement and positive influence in their teaching practices, which became more dynamic, contextual, motivating and more practical, as well as they become more confident to teach the subject; EA2. The importance of teaching Botanic, mainly associated with the relation of plants to our daily life and with the environmental and ecological issues, was widely recognized by teachers (93%), as well as the influence of the discipline in this valorization (67%). However, 33% did not declare such influence, since they already had this idea before the discipline; EA 3. A big portion of the teachers (76%) emphasized the influence of the discipline in their current teaching practice, both for using resources and strategies already available in this discipline (72%), and for having been inspired by its new approaches (63%), such as had more practical, dynamic and contextualized teaching classes. 17% of the teachers had difficulties in implementing the proposals presented by the discipline, mainly due to obstacles in the teaching context. EA 4. The influence of the Botanic discipline on their selection of conceptual content was reported by 64% of the teachers and they described these changes related to the way of working contents (strategies, resources and approaches), not related to their selection, but also noticed the improvement in their Botanical knowledge, which allowed positive changes in the selection and approach of these contents in the classroom. 29% did not report changes after taking the discipline and this was, for the most part, justified by their lack of curricular flexibility in the context of some teachers or poor conditions of teaching work. EA 5. 73% of the participants stated that the discipline helped them to think about the specific difficulties students may face when studying Botanic, where reports were highlighted to reduce the difficulties of their students, seeking a more dynamic and contextualized teaching and learning process, that values the learning concepts of their students. Specific subjects like evolution, phylogeny, photosynthesis and reproductive cycles were considered by teachers as those of more difficult learning process. Thus, we could detect, in the different AE, elements linked to the manifestations present in the PCK model of Rollnick et al. (2008), mainly Instructional Strategies of a Specific Content, Representations and Curriculum Outline, indicating that teaching knowledge was in fact mobilized. Our study points out the need to value and invest in the improvement of Botanic PCK model for continuing teaching courses in the Brazilian context, and the EaD is a viable and valuable alternative path. The teacher needs other associated knowledge, as well as specific knowledge, such as students\' knowledge, context, and general pedagogy, in order to have better conditions to develop and influence their teaching practice

The circulation of knowledge in the continuing education of teachers: an analysis of the PEC-cities in the perspective of comparative studies in education

Porfírio, Luciana Cristina 21 June 2012 (has links)
The present paper discusses the circulation of knowledge about the professionalization of a program of continuous training of teachers in early grades, the PEC-cities, developed in the State of São Paulo, at the initiative of the Ministry of Education, in partnership with some universities in the period from 2006 to 2008. The research adopted the latest theoretical perspectives of comparative studies in education, which can be classified into two different investigative traditions: the first, represented by some authors linked to Stanford University, among which are Meyer and Ramirez, commonly mentioned in works like \"neo-institutionalists\", and the second is represented by modelarmente Schriewer by some tendency classified as hermeneutics. Through the study of speech and the devices in this didactic material produced under the program to be distributed to the participant teachers, it was possible to identify a set of authors, texts and concepts that have been circulating widely in the international context of educational reforms undertaken since 1990. In the present analysis of the material, it was noticed prescriptions around the idea of \"reflective practitioner\", which happens to be the theme of the reconstruction of professional identity of teachers in this period, with emphasis on the practical knowledge and ownership of the core ideas that set of authors and texts that circulate internationally. In this analysis, the concepts of externalization (Schriewer) and \"foreign native\" (Popkewitz) were important theoretical tools to compose an analytical framework of the discourse produced in the PEC-Cities.
