Who shall have his life as a prize of war ? : a study of the oracles intented for the secondary characters of Jer echoing their narrativizing and of the reader’s memory as a place for revelation

Chauty, Erwan 02 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis is interested in how oracles are inserted in a narration in the book of Jeremiah (Jr) ; for this purpose the oracles destined to five secondary characters are analyzed by reframing them into their narrative context. Since the diachronic studies, which were the majority in the xxth century, cannot account for the meaning of the final stage of the text of Jr in a satisfying manner, this research takes part to the synchronic way of analyzing this book developed in the last decades. Before the intended analysis, two preambles must be studied, at the crossing of narrative theory, Hebrew syntax, and specificities of Jr : the characteristics and relations of the literary forms of narration and reported speech ; the different types of characters along the history of literature and the best-fitted categories for analyzing Jr’s characters. Then are studied the oracles intended for Pashhur son of Immer, Ebed-Melech, Baruch, Gedaliah, and Zedekiah. The « character-effect » soon appears to be quite limited, calling for a solution situated out of the fabula to the puzzle created by the narration. The causality for the divine judgments expressed in the oracles can be reconstructed thanks to the discovery of verbal echoes and resonances between preceding oracles and the narrativization of characters. This exegetical result intersects with the theology of revelation and challenges the paradigms upon which it was built both at the beginning of Christianism and at Vatican ii. The thinking of the revelation of the paternity of God can be founded anew upon a theological interpretation of the reader’s new capacities

The Revelation of God : meditations of the black church in existential times

Mdingi, Hlulani Msimelelo 06 1900 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 231-239) / Chapter one begins by introducing and orientating the reader to the study and the purpose of the study, namely the revelation of God. It also opens up what is central to the study by a way of a problem statement concerning this revelation of God, the black church and the human condition. The aims of the study and the research methodology are set out. The chapter ends with a hypothesis concerning the future doctrine of revelation and the prospects of this revelation in the lives of black people. Chapter two entails discussion on God and the church, as it pertains to revelation, starting with a historical account of Christian theology on the subject of revelation. The subject of revelation is engaged on an existential level, particularly the main areas of Christian theology, namely; special and general revelation. This is a section that puts both concepts within black experience, to see the viability for a black ecclesiology and black theology. Chapter two moves on to contend that for black church, there is a serious theological insurgent that is necessary and it is part and parcel of God’s revelation to blacks and the oppressed. This outlook places a section of critical reasoning in South African context and society concerning God’s revelation. Chapter three engages a philosophical meditation, ascribing meditation as a state of self-reflection for the black church and black theology. This meditation is cognisant of black experience and is self-diagnosis concern God and humanity, particularly the dehumanising, (how it must affirm essence and substance). The meditation of the black church engages the concept of absurdity as Camus (1995) (also see Melancon 1983) has posited the absurd as a malaise in the world and silence of the word to that malaise. The absurd is also linked to theodicy, however, the black experience and the encounter with God transcends absurdity and theodicy. As part of the transcending aspect of the black experience, the research considers Western atheism, Christianity and death of God, whose burial is in the mind, souls and bodies of blacks. The chapter then moves on to discuss the black church as a receptor of God’s revelation, the new image of the crucified and the new metaphysics guaranteeing the upliftment of blacks. Chapter four focuses on the black invisibility and the hiddenness of God, it is seeing invisibility and hiddenness as linked together. The chapter also focuses on the need for black visibility rooted in the ontological and physiological expression and experience of being human; Imago Dei. The chapter links black visibility with the concept of whiteness, being a dehumanising political identity imposed on the people of colour. The chapter then translates into the context of visibility, invisibility and God’s revelation within the economic South African context. The final analysis of the chapter is a confession of God’s revelation rooted in God’s visibility and running parallel to that of black visibility. Chapter five proposes that the black experience and the use of the Bible Sola Sriptura, as it reveals the black church as part of church history. As such, it takes the early church’s reading of the New Testament and understanding of Christology through kenosis; the emptying of God to be human and using that paradigm to link Christ’s human experience and the experience of the dehumanising and humanising that of blacks. The chapter concludes with a Christology and black Messiah, who links the secular and divine, general and special revelation. Chapter six concerns the findings of the study, recommendations and conclusion. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Th. (Systematic Theology)

Heerskappy van God as eskatologiese motif : enkele belangrike aspekte in die boek Openbaring / The supremacy of God as eschatological motif : some important aspects in the book of Revelation

Theron, Hendrik Schalk, 1928- 06 1900 (has links)
The objective of this study was to establish a new approach to the interpretation of the book of Revelation. This was undertaken because some of the methods used to interpret the book, did not succeed in delivering an acceptable or even a comprehensible message. Some methods are superficial, while others are so complicated that the book becomes more of a mystery. As a working hypothesis for this study the hermeneutical presupposition is posed that John's Revelation has its own guidelines as to its interpretation, as it is given primarily in its first chapter. The theme and message of the book clearly shows the way to its interpretation. The supremacy of God and his power as the Almighty proclaims his rule over this world and this forms the basis for the message to his people. Christ is given the authority as king of this world and He maintains the governing of this world till the end. This means that He as ruler over this world reveals his coming as happening in the salvation of his chosen people and in the judging and punishing of his enemies. His coming is already underway and now is the eschatological time in progress. He is already the Redeemer of his people and the judge of his enemies. But this motif is further developed in the fact that the end will come according to the will of God. In the light of this prophetic revelations the book is not a pure apocalypse in the apocalyptic tradition, but it is genuine prophecy although there are apocalyptic terms and trends used in the book. When the structure of the book is analysed, it is found that this method of interpretation is really plausible. The first overall message being the assurance of the presence of Christ in his church under all circumstances and his controlling of the history and bringing this world to its end according to God's will, thus revealing the effect this has on the church and the world at large, all this is sustained by the structure of the book. Another aspect researched in this study is the meaning of the term "the supremacy of God". First a survey of the systematic theological formulation of this concept is done and then a systematic summary of this concept in the book of Revelation is made. A selection of a number of chapters from the book of Revelation is studied with the purpose of showing how this motif is proved by the contents of the book. These capita selecta are specially selected for this purpose, but they do give an overall view of the book's message. The last chapter of this study formulates the message of the book of Revelation. With the proclamation of the supremacy of God as illustrated by the reign of Christ as Lord of this world, this paranesis is given to his people clear and simple: God is the Almighty and through Christ He has everything under his control, therefore the church must never fear but can continue serving Him and growing to his glory as his kingdom. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / Th. It´s developed here an approach of staring to the truth and the revelation, conceived as pedagogical methods. The truth, not as a religious concept, of what is searched to give sense to the world, human life, and revelation, as an experience emphasized by the language and religious expectations existential meaning are similar experiences and constitute not only as a result of a learning process, but as a process in itself, open and in constant renewal. The truth would not be where someone gets, but the roads by which someone takes. Finding the contact points and the possible mutual contributions of the philosopher Richard Rorty´s thought, and his edifying philosophy, and the philosopher Juan Luis Segundo, and his idea of revelation as a pedagogical process, will be my effort of approach between his propositions and the construction of a proposal which does not get rid of the human language and condition. The human being, who was marked by freedom, has in the contingency of his constructions a limit to his achievements and a space for his liberation of any dehumanizing process.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese Kenner2.pdf: 1455130 bytes, checksum: fe52cc5f7756351b7fb18296729904dc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-04-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Apocalypse of John is an intriguing work. Its language filled with violence, fearsome monsters, people crying out for justice, and announcements of death and despair, in a frame of celestial spectacles, fascinates those who like fiction and nourishes hope for those who expect one day to enter the New Jerusalem, where there will be no sea or death, and when the tears will be wiped away. However, the book of Revelation will be read as a narration of reality. In this sense, the text will not be seen as a reflection of any oppression, but as a discursive construction about the system that is for the visionary the denial of order. Based on the concepts of text and cultural memory, in light of I. Lótman, the Russian school of semiotics of culture, and the Assmanns researches, this work shall observe how the memories of fallen and imprisoned celestial beings of Enochic tradition are present in the Judeo-Christian literature and serve to the narrative construction of the eschatological horror scenario in the fifth and sixth trumpets of Revelation 9.1-21. Thus, the thesis defends terror as an instrument of persuasion that helped to describe the visionary context as a chaotic reality in his strategy. Through narrative strategies, the narrator wants to impose his vision so that his interlocutors accept his interpretation of reality and leave the association with Roman life and system, for in doing so they will be compared with sealed and they will receive the same rewards. Hence, his description with eschatological language plays with both the future and the present; it foresees chaos, but lives it in a narrative level. Thus, the book of Revelation, with an extremely radical dualism, does not give space for doubts. The thesis defends, therefore, that the book can be read as a rhetorical instrument of terror and fear that encourages its implied readers not to flirt with Rome, not to accept its discourses or of those associated with it.
