The Relationship of the Lingual Nerve to the 3rd Molar Region: A Three Dimensional Analysis

Garbedian, Justin 19 January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this study was to: (1) model the course of the lingual nerve (LN) in the third molar region using digitized data and (2) investigate landmarks to aid in predicting the position of LN. A MicroScribe 3-DX digitizer and Autodesk® Maya® 8.5 were used to create 3-D in-situ models of LN for seven human cadaveric specimens. Regression analysis demonstrated that an anteriorly positioned lingula is directly proportional to the vertical distance of the LN relative to the alveolar crest (p < 0.05). A superiorly positioned mylohyoid ridge was also directly proportional to the vertical distance of the LN relative to the alveolar crest (p < 0.05). The LN is positioned closer to the alveolar crest in specimens where the mylohyoid ridge is positioned superiorly (p = 0.001). This study demonstrated a novel way of quantifying the relative position of the LN using 3-D computer modeling.

Inventaire mondial des marges transformantes et évolution tectono-sédimentaire des plateaux de Demerara et de Guinée / World Inventory of transform margins and evolution of the Demerara and Guinea marginal plateaus

Mercier de Lepinay, Marion 22 March 2016 (has links)
Transform margins form by transform motion between plates during early stages of oceanic spreading. They have been poorly studied in comparison with divergent margins, at least for the last 15 years. The Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana margin represents the best known example of a transform margin and is often considered as a model. However, the lack of a global complete inventory of such margins may lead to underestimate their diversity. Two approaches have been developed in this work. The first one consisted in a compiling world transform margins using a systematic and simple methodology. Those margins have then been compared (physiography, structure). In a second approach we analysed the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Demerara and Guinea conjugated transform-derived plateaus. The worldwide review of transform margins shows that those represent 30% of the existing passive margins. Their distribution inside very oblique oceanic domains, and at the intersection between oceanic domains of contrasted ages, reflects specific initiation conditions. 30% of those transform margins locate on the edge of marginal plateaus —newly defined type of basins— that seem to be associated with important crustal thinning. Furthermore, this inventory shows that transform margins display a great variety of architectures. The Demerara and Guinea marginal plateaus are bounded by transform margins that occur on an already thinned crust, probably along a preexisting structure. The nature of these plateaus basement is discussed: sedimentary or volcanic SDRs fan-shaped units? During the Equatorial Atlantic opening, the formation and evolution of Demerara and Guinea transform margins were accompanied by intense deformations close to the continent-ocean boundary and by several successive uplift and subsidence phases along the plateaus borders. Their origin and mechanisms are discussed.

The transition region from the east to the southeast Brazilian coast, between 19°S and 21°S, shows remarkable geomorphological features that characterizes a complex shelf-break line. The Abrolhos Banks and the Vitória-Trindade Ridge’s (VTR) seamounts are irregularities that promote influences on the system of western boundary currents in this region, specially to the Brazil Current (BC), inducing its meandering and the developing of eddies locally. Confined by these structures around it, the Tubarão Bight (TB) is a region in front of Vitória (20.3°S; 40.3°W) that shelters cyclonic eddies which formation was investigated in this work as influenced by a bifurcation of the BC in this site. The bifurcation of a geostrophic current is a geophysical process of interaction between a jet and a continental boundary that results in the formation of two secondary jets – one in each direction – and that can be responsible for the developing of eddies inside partially confined oceanic basins (e.g Alboran Sea and Sea of Japan). The occurrence of this process was found inside the TB following the impinging of the BC on its continental slope, identified based on numerical modelling results derived from a high-resolution and refined topography simulation. To the extent of our knowledge, this is the first description of such process in this region. This work’s findings suggest that the secondary jet deflected to the TB’s interior is necessary to the developing and maintenance of two kinds of eddies with different size, duration and date of occurrence. These eddies’ characteristics and the bifurcation’s itself were significantly linked to the flowing pattern of the BC through the VTR’s seamounts.

Analyse de signaux multicomposantes : contributions à la décomposition modale Empirique, aux représentations temps-fréquence et au Synchrosqueezing / Analysis of multicomponent signals : Empirical Mode Decomposition, time-frequency analysis and Synchrosqueezing

Oberlin, Thomas 04 November 2013 (has links)
Many signals from the physical world can be modeled accurately as a superposition of amplitude- and frequency-modulated waves. This includes audio signals (speech, music), medical data (ECG) as well as temporal series (temperature or electric consumption). This thesis deals with the analysis of such signals, called multicomponent because they contain several modes. The techniques involved allow for the detection of the different modes, their demodulation (ie, determination of their instantaneous amplitude and frequency) and reconstruction. The thesis uses the well-known framework of time-frequency and time-scale analysis through the use of the short-time Fourier and the continuous wavelet transforms. We will also consider a more recent algorithmic method based on the symmetry of the enveloppes : the empirical mode decomposition. The first contribution proposes a new way to avoid the iterative ``Sifting Process'' in the empirical mode decomposition, whose convergence and stability are not guaranteed. Instead, one uses a constrained optimization step together with an enhanced detection of the local extrema of the high-frequency mode. The second contribution analyses multicomponent signals through the short-time Fourier transform and the continuous wavelet transform, taking advantage of the ``ridge'' structure of such signals in the time-frequency or time-scale planes. More precisely, we propose a new reconstruction method based on local integration, adapted to the local frequency modulation. Some theoretical guarantees for this reconstruction are provided, as well as an application to multicomponent signal denoising. The third contribution deals with the quality of the time-frequency representation, using the reassignment method and the synchrosqueezing transform: we propose two extensions of the synchrosqueezing, that enable mode reconstruction while remaining efficient for strongly modulated waves. A generalization of the synchrosqueezing in dimension 2 is also proposed, based on the so-called monogenic wavelet transform.
