Social Media as Connected Learning Technology:  A Mixed Methods Investigation of Facebook for Undergraduate Education

Won, Samantha Gwai Lan 04 May 2015 (has links)
Social media technologies are networked technological tools that can provide opportunities for productive socialization and collaboration. While social media are being incorporated increasingly into formal classroom settings, there is very little research available providing specific evidence for the affordances and limitations of social media as educational tools. It is also unclear whether undergraduates are open to, or already using social media for educational purposes. The current study explores Facebook as a collaborative and participatory learning tool to provide information on sex-related topics to undergraduate students. Connected learning was used as the guiding framework for exploring the ways that social media blend peer culture, academics, and learner interests to promote learning through interactions with a learning community. Results of the study indicate that undergraduate students were open and willing to using social media in academic contexts. However, students did not contribute comments directly to the study page resulting in a lack of evidence confirming whether connected learning occurred. Based on student responses, instructors hoping to integrate social media into their courses would do well to focus on maintaining responsiveness to students, promoting the development of a learning community, and varying the style and format of posts. It was determined that social media sites such as Facebook would serve best as supplemental, but intentional educational technologies rather than the basis for creating entire courses. Further research should center on understanding the participation and lurking patterns of students in educational social media environments, as well as the driving factors behind these participation patterns. / Ph. Teenage pregnancy: do nurses know how to respond?

Nichols, Joanna E. 15 January 2018 (has links)
Yes / Teenage pregnancy is often a very emotive subject. The media image of pregnant teenagers and young parents can be very negative, promoting the idea that young people become pregnant for financial reasons or for want of a responsible attitude. In reality, this is seldom true and the picture is far more complex. For many young parents the decision to become pregnant is not taken lightly. Their parenting, though perhaps more challenging than for older parents, is no less caring and effective. Sadly, this is not the experience for all young parents and their children. A number of negative outcomes for teenage parent families have been identified (see Box 1).1 As well as the difficulties faced by teenage parents, many young people become pregnant without intending to be and do not continue their pregnancies. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in 2015 almost 50% of under 18 pregnancies ended in termination. Risk factors for teenage pregnancy include poor school experience, low educational attainment, bullying and domestic violence, use of alcohol and spending time in local authority care.

A Community's Perception of Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections and Prevention Programs

Burns, Felecity Nicole 01 January 2016 (has links)
The United States has the highest rates of teenage pregnancies, births, abortions, and sexually transmitted infections in the industrialized world. African American teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are on the rise in many rural southwest school districts in the State of Georgia where the sex education curriculum is nonexistent or solely focuses on abstinence. Georgia ranked 4th in cases of primary and secondary syphilis, 6th in AIDS, 12th in gonorrhea, 14th in teen pregnancies, and 17th in chlamydia in the United States in 2012. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the perceptions of residents of a primarily African American rural southwest Georgia community regarding the importance of sex education and their knowledge of the school district's sex education curriculum. It specifically investigated abstinence-only sexual education using Bronfenbrenner's ecological learning theory. Study participants (n = 25) were African American youths in 9th grade, their parents, school officials, religious leaders, policymakers, and health advocates. The research questions were designed to investigate participants' knowledge of sexual health and effective sex education curricula for their school district. Data were collected from the participants via semi-structured interviews. MAXQDA 11.1 software was used for thematic analysis of transcribed interviews. The findings demonstrated community support for a comprehensive sex education curriculum and the need for a new paradigm in social policy that suggests initiatives should be evidence-based to achieve maximum efficacy in policy analysis. The study provides a baseline for school officials to assess community opinions regarding the acceptance of a comprehensive sex education curriculum.

Sexuální výchova na základní škole / Sex education in primary school

ČECHUROVÁ, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
The topic of my thesis is the issue of sex education in primary school. The main objective of this work is to analyze the curricular documents specified for Czech Education and especially to analyze the literature that could be helpful elementary school teachers to teach sex education. The thesis consists of two parts ? theoretical part and research. In the first chapter of the theoretical part I am dealing with the question of why sex education is important. Then I continue with sub-chapters dedicated to general definitions and principles of sex education. The second chapter is devoted to the National Programme of Development of Education or the ?Bílá kniha? and to how sex education is stipulated in this curricular document. In the second practical part of this thesis I am dealing with the analysis of another curricular document - Framework Education Programme (for Elementary Education) and its updates for 2013 from the perspective of sex education. Primary analysis of literature which is available from online catalogs forms another point in the research. The last point is the analysis of six selected titles from the perspective of their didactic facilities and subsequent evaluation.

In Pursuit of Paternal Significance: Fathers' Influence on their Daughters' and Sons' Sexual Behaviors and Beliefs

Everley, Rachel S. 01 January 2008 (has links)
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy and adolescent STD rates of any industrialized nation. Numerous factors are involved in adolescent sexual decision-making and the social-ecological framework suggests that there are multiple levels of influence on adolescent development, including familial. Utilizing survey data from the Virginia Abstinence Education Initiative (VAEI), this project specifically explores paternal influences on adolescent sexual behavior and beliefs by examining paternal residence in the home, perceived paternal figure sexual beliefs, and father-child relationship factors. Results indicate that paternal figures influence their daughters' and sons' sexual behaviors as well as beliefs. Differences in paternal figure influence across gender were found as well. Those endeavoring to develop more effective teen pregnancy prevention and abstinence education programs may consider the involvement of paternal figures in future efforts.

Significado da sexualidade e assuntos correlatos no contexto escolar por professores do ensino fundamental na educação sexual: experiência de uma pesquisa-ação / Meaning of sexuality and interrelated issues in the school context by teachers from the elementary school in the sexual education: experiment of an action-searching

Jaques, André Estevam 17 December 2012 (has links)
In the educational scenario, relating to health, the sexual matters are responsible for a succession of factors which can head individuals to severe perturbation. If there is no political discussion to deal with those problems, mainly in the adolescence, in a dialogued way, sincere and honest, it is the nurse who is in charge of understanding that the sexuality and its several unfolding depend on a series of financial, environmental, socio-cultural conditions, among others, as conditioning and/or determinant of the health condition. Aim: Identify the meaning of sexuality, sexual violence and sexual education in a partnership with the teachers from the elementary school of a public school in the state of Paraná, developing with them an educational program aiming for give them tools enough to work in this sense with educational actions. Methods: Qualitative researching, under the actionsearching, which allow us surveying some problems and then suggest some educational actions. We used the interview, with a questionnaire, to survey the data, and also the observation of the participant, using the diary fields. The sample was constituted by 23 teachers of the elementary school from a town in the countryside of Paraná. We adopted as inclusion criteria: being teacher currently, working in the elementary school and accepting being part of the study, voluntarily. Data Analysis: these were surveyed through the answers given by the participants of the searching. They were analyzed qualitively and, therefore, by categorization, allowing the grouping of all converging and/or diverging elements, proper and/or adjusted to the reflections, according to the discussion, associated by the obtained data from the study. Results: We inferred that the majority of the interviewed teachers understand the concept of sexuality as the sex act itself. They highlighted that the parents still have some difficulties discussing this matter in the familiar context. They recognized that there are countless difficulties discussing this issue at school. Teachers noticed that, nowadays, in the society there is a strong valuation of the sex act, contributing to the existing of a narcissist, imediatist and individualist sexuality. They showed a wide social consciousness about the influence of the social structures in the spreading of the sexual violence. They also pointed the main difficult approaching about the sexuality in the classroom, their own lack of preparation and knowledge about this matter. They acknowledged that there is no specified program about sexuality, but the emphasis in the importance of the family interaction in the developing and application of the sexual education inside the school environment. Therefore, we consider that nursing, as a social activity, must, effectively, take part in the school environment contributing for the teachers preparation to face this huge challenge, the sexual education, because even with several legal mechanisms, this practice has not been effective and it still remains the biologistic view to the detriment of a liberating, dialogical, critical and a transforming education.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-27T13:53:44Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 ARISTOTELES MESQUITA DE LIMA NETTO.pdf: 1194963 bytes, checksum: 6f23b5b2c7ac2a540720b97b23044d71 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-04-27 / This study had the purpose to investigate the official documents that rules the Sex Education in Brazil and Portugal. The importance of this theme is in the need to deepen the discussions and studies in the scope of sex education, since there are difficulties, limitations and misconceptions faced and-or committed by teachers and education professionals within the school spaces, which show plurality, diversity and cultural and social specificities. To this end, laws were investigated, parameters and other relevant documents to this theme. For the accomplishment of this study, it was discussed about education, school spaces, sexuality, sex education, family planning, politics, state, government, neo-liberalism and capitalism. This is a dialectical research, more specifically a documentary research guided by a bibliographic survey and reflections concerning the level at which Sexual Education is being developed in Brazil and Portugal. As theoretical foundation is: Foucault (1988, 2011), Nunes (1987, 2010), Arendt (2002, 2004, 2007), Campos (2005), Bobbio; Metteucci e Pasquino (1998), Louro (2000), Saviani (1991), Vaz (1996), Moizés (2010), César (2009) e Suplicy (1983). The documentation survey was conducted in 2015 and in the first three months of 2016. The data tabulated, was drawn up in six analysis tables: the first three refers to documents that states the context of sexuality and sexual education in school spaces in Brazil. Federal Constitution (1988); Statute of the Child and Adolescent (Law 8.069 - 1990); Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (Law 9.394 - 1996); Statute of the Person with Special Needs (Law No. 13,146 - 2015) and National Curricular Parameters - Sexual Orientation. The last three tables relates to specific laws of national character in the perspective of sexuality and sexual education in Portugal: Sex Education and Family Planning (Law No. 3-1984); Guarantee the Right to Reproductive Health (Law No. 120-1999) and Polity of Sexual Education Applied in Schools (Law No. 60-2009). The survey pointed to contemporary issues from historical uprisings precursor to the current sexual education, as biologizing and hygienist human sexuality and the principles of the Declaration of Sexual Rights (WAS). The analysis was directed to advances and limitations about the current reality in sex education in school spaces and influences of the sexual constitution of the human being in its totality. It is suggested the need of more studies, researches and ongoing dialogues and with systematization for research standards to be established and possible appropriation of what was positive and beneficial in a certain country with a view to implement in another. Brazil, for example, can analyze actions of the Sexual Orientation Council and the methods of sexual education coordinator implemented in Portuguese territory.

Oliveira, Elisabete Regina Baptista de 19 April 2007 (has links)
This is an empirical qualitative research, which purpose is to analyze, under gender relations perspective, the singularities of love, sexual and reproductive trajectories of underprivileged young women living in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, considering their socialization experiences. Six young women between the ages of 16 and 20, four among which had teen pregnancy experience, were interviewed, with the purpose to understand, first, the learning process of the social \"rules\" of sexuality shaped and advocated by the many socialization agents, as well as the way young women articulate and incorporate these teachings and how they build their knowledge about sexuality. Second, the investigation tried to identify and to analyze which elements are perceived by the young women as the most important in their decision-making process to become a teenage mother or to postpone this project. The study aims to emphasize the importance of the heterogeneity of the profiles and the diversity of the situations experienced by young women, considering that health and education public policies tend to homogenize them under the age criterion, ignoring the meanings and their representations of sexuality and motherhood. The concept of socialization developed by Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann and the concept of gender elaborated by Joan Scott are applied as theoretical basis for the analysis. The field research was carried out in Cidade Tiradentes, in east São Paulo, among the young clients of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Center Maria Auxiliadora Lara Barcelos, a specialized public health unit which provide health services and counseling to women living in the neighborhood, with pioneering and innovative characteristics, working under the perspective of gender relations. The interviews were carried our for about one year, during which it was possible to follow some important events in the lives of the young, for example, the birth of their children, job hunting experiences, their perceptions about past events and future prospects. As main results, it was evidenced that the young women construct their repertoire of sexuality knowledge on the basis of discourses and models shaped by different socialization agents; all agents are important to them in the process; the young women participate actively in the search for information that help them make choices about their sexual lives. It was also evidenced that gender models, especially those in their family socialization and love relationships influence strongly the way the young women think about motherhood, and are more relevant than the discourses from families and other socialization agents.
