Ramírez González del Riego, Jorge Alfonso 29 August 2016 (has links)
Tesis

Libby Larsen's Margaret Songs: A Musical Portrait Of Willa Cather's Margaret Elliot

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Libby Larsen is one of the most performed and acclaimed composers today. She is a spirited, compelling, and sensitive composer whose music enhances the poetry of America's most prominent authors. Notable among her works are song cycles for soprano based on the poetry of female writers, among them novelist and poet Willa Cather (1873-1947). Larsen has produced two song cycles on works from Cather's substantial output of fiction: one based on Cather's short story, "Eric Hermannson's Soul," titled Margaret Songs: Three Songs from Willa Cather (1996); and later, My Antonia (2000), based on Cather's novel of the same title. In Margaret Songs, Cather's poetry and short stories--specifically the character of Margaret Elliot--combine with Larsen's unique compositional style to create a surprising collaboration. This study explores how Larsen in these songs delves into the emotional and psychological depths of Margaret's character, not fully formed by Cather. It is only through Larsen's music and Cather's poetry that Margaret's journey through self-discovery and love become fully realized. This song cycle is a glimpse through the eyes of two prominent female artists on the societal pressures placed upon Margaret's character, many of which still resonate with women in today's culture. This study examines the work Margaret Songs by discussing Willa Cather, her musical influences, and the conditions surrounding the writing of "Eric Hermannson's Soul." It looks also into Cather's influence on Libby Larsen and the commission leading to Margaret Songs. Finally, a description of the musical, dramatic, and textual content of the songs completes this interpretation of the interactions of Willa Cather, Libby Larsen, and the character of Margaret Elliot. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2013

De Ira de Sêneca: tradução, introdução e notas / On Senecas wrath: translation, introduction and notes

Ricardo Antonio Fidelis de Lima 26 November 2015 (has links)
O nosso trabalho consiste na tradução e no estudo do De Ira do filósofo estoico e político romano Lucio Anêu Sêneca. / Our dissertation consists in the translation and study of De Ira from the Stoic philosopher and Roman politician Lucious Annaeus Seneca. The book is addressed to his brother Novato who supposedly inquires him how to restrain this passion. Thus, in three books, the philosopher presents the genesis of that passion and the evils caused by it to finally introduce ways to extirpate it from the soul. The defense of the Stoicism\'s teachings explicitly echoes in several examples given by the philosopher when contrasted with other philosophical schools of the time. So wrath is treated as the most damaging passion among all human passions.

Agostinho e os maniqueus: análise a partir \'das duas almas\' / Augustine and the manichaeans: analysis from \"two souls\"

Daniel Fujisaka 27 June 2014 (has links)
Reintroduzse a questão das duas almas no plano geral da filosofia do bispo, em registro notoriamente distinto: interioridade e confissão / The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how Augustine reappoints the Manichaean issue of \"two souls\" to the field of human interiority, as associate life and soul as goods perceived by the intellect and therefore irreducibly real (cogito). Thus, the soul can judge the value of natures and organize them internally according to each way of perception of soul: sensible or intelligible. In the first part, we seek to understand the question through the analysis of third book of the Confessions, paragraphs 1.1 to 6.12. We proceed in double interest, interrelating two notions of sin: 1) The nature of being or not beingdefectus of individual will- and 2) as misery -heritage impotence deja lá in order to aim possibilities of assimilation and refusal of the Manichaean gnosis. In addition, we explore how Augustine faces the problem of the existence of evil soul in analysis of the treatise of 392, About the Two Souls (De duabus animabus) - second part of our work. In this work, the Hipponate seeks to demolish all gnose through doctrine of two souls. Thus, the soul is the first consideration -cogito: being, life and intellection comprenhended only by the intellect- by which intuitive definitions of will and sin are allowed. After discovering the absolute indeterminacy of the will as the only element of human mobile, Augustine proceed to adapt the theory of \"parts of the soul\", according to the Neoplatonic tradition, and sharply modify the role of intellectual part of the soul- in context of his own experience of fallibility. At the end, the effort to recognize the soul as ontologically non-corporeal and undivided moment in which sin is 10 defined as denial of being (defectus) - should also consider the original and supra-individual cleavage: \"an involuntary installed within the volunteer\". It was reintroduced the question of two souls\" in the philosophy of the bishop in distinguished register: interiority and confession

Development and Application of Membraneless Electron Microscopy

Batra, Nitin M 21 November 2019 (has links)
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is an important tool for the characterization of materials as it can provide clear understanding of the relationship between structure, property and composition of nanomaterials. For this, the in-situ TEM analysis is performed and requires specially manufactured sample holders. In particular, those designed to carry out electrical biasing can be used to understand not just the I-V characteristics but also the failure mechanism, structure-property relationship, Joule heating dynamics, electromigration, field emission properties, etc. at the nanoscale. The platforms holding the sample in most modern in-situ TEM holders rely on an insulating ceramic membrane which needs to be (almost) transparent to the imaging electron beam. Electrodes are defined through lithography and patterned on this membrane. Unfortunately, the presence of this membranes introduces several limitations such as electrostatic charging, reduction of image contrast and poor mechanical stability. To circumvent this issue it is necessary to fabricate a novel type of sample platform which does not rely on the presence of a membrane. In this work, novel membraneless sample-holding platforms were designed and manufactured using advanced microfabrication methods and tools. Besides fitting into an array of analytical tools, the novel platforms (or “chips”) can be subjected to thermal and/or chemical processing without compromising their function or structure. To test these, the electrical response of one-, two- and zero-dimensional nanoparticles were studied. Firstly, we investigated current-induced modifications in silver nanowires and expandable graphite flakes and studied various phenomenon involved. Along with these, corresponding ex-situ studies were also performed. Next, graphene oxide was explored as an alternative support platform for in-situ TEM. We successfully achieved temperature as high as 2000o C by Joule heating of graphene oxide. Furthermore, this graphene oxide platform was used as a heater and chemical processing substrate for investigating thermal stability and synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles, respectively.

Schopenhauer a Nietzsche o člověku / Schopenhauer and Nietzsche about human

Suchý, Radek January 2011 (has links)
Dissertation: Schopenhauer and Nietzsche about human Autor: Radek Suchý Annotation In my dissertation I endeavour to show the way how the 19th century german philosophers Schopenhauer and Nietzsche reflected various interesting issues that are significantly adherent to the human life. In so doing I try to place their respective views in such a mutual perspective so that both their characteristic uniqueness and peculiarity and their eventual affinity and contiguity would arise as clearly as possible. In the conclusion then I endeavour to show on the example of Schopenhauer what it can mean and imply if the man philosophizes about the man.
