GEOMETRIC AND KINEMATIC EVOLUTION OF THE BESSEMER TRANSVERSE ZONE, ALABAMA ALLEGHANIAN THRUST BELT

Brewer, Margaret Colette 01 January 2004 (has links)
Transverse zones are important syn-kinematic components of thrust belt development. Various scales of data were utilized to develop three-dimensional geometric and kinematic models for the Bessemer transverse zone (BTZ) of the Alabama Alleghanian thrust belt. Regional analysis of the BTZ began with the examination of geologic maps (1:250,000, 1:48,000, and 1:24,000 scales), seismic reflection profiles, well data, and previous stratigraphic research. All Paleozoic-age stratigraphic contacts, major thrust faults and associated folds, and various unnamed minor structures were compiled to create two strike-perpendicular, and five-strike parallel, cross sections transecting the extent of the BTZ at a scale of 1:100,000. The balanced and viable cross sections were used to create palinspastic maps of the BTZ. The deformed cross sections and geologic maps, and the restored cross sections and palinspastic maps, model the post- and prekinematic geometry of the transverse zone, respectively. Additional geological fieldwork in the northwestern part of the BTZ permitted the construction of geologic maps (1:24,000 scale) documenting cross-strike links (the fundamental unit of transverse zones) exposed at the present erosional surface (Concord and McCalla 7.5 quadrangles). Balanced and viable geologic cross sections (1:24,000 scale) were constructed from these data and placed parallel and perpendicular to strike of cross-strike links. The cross sections were restored and used to create 1:24,000-scale palinspastic maps of the cross-strike links in this part of the BTZ. The cross sections and maps model the three-dimensional geometry of the cross-strike links comprising the BTZ. Sub-allochthon basement structures are present beneath the thrust transport vectors of cross-strike links in the BTZ, indicating genetic relationships between transverse zone structures and underlying basment structures. Basement-graben related changes in the stratigraphic thickness of the decollement-host horizon are interpreted as having localized and facilitated growth of the Bessemer mushwad, a ductile duplex in the allochthon. The muswad localized the structural position of two thrust sheets and several cross-strike links in the BTZ. Geologic map patterns of the transverse zone indicate a break-back deformation sequence for the BTZ, interpreted as a response to decollement propagation through an allochthon-spanning weak decollement-host horizon, which had large stratigraphic thickness variations in basement grabens.

O sistema de controle judicial do movimento grevista no Brasil: da greve dos petroleiros em 1995 aos dias atuais / The judicial control system of Brazilian strike movement: from oil workers strike at 1995 to nowadays.

Corregliano, Danilo Uler 16 May 2014 (has links)
The following questions intend to understand the manner that the Judiciary relates with the strikes, mainly since the oil workers strike at 1995. The research assumes the hypothesis of the judicial control system from Labor Law. Thereunto, the strike and this system are analyzed by a critical perusal of the corresponding legal, political and sociological doctrine. Establishing these structural determinations, it is possible to characterize the so-called judicial control system at one of its primordial function on the capitalist totality, namely the striker interdiction. Then, the reading is materialized from the chain of events that branded that oil workers strike, followed by other jurisprudential trends. The study finishes with an analysis of the possibilities and limits to the neutralization of the control mechanisms from this system.

The "unknown soldier" : exploring the lived experiences of mental health care users during and after a public sector workers' strike

Schoeman, Winston 06 December 2012 (has links)
This research study explored the effects of a public servants‟ strike on psychiatric patients. This is achieved through investigating the subjective lived experiences of events prior to, during and ensuing a public servants' strike. In addition, strike action within the health care sector as a worldwide phenomenon is discussed. This provides a conceptual understanding of strike action within the health care sector, as well as critical issues raised around the use of strikes as a medium of communication. During the public servants' strike of August 2010, 446 patients were discharged from a specialized psychiatric facility in the greater Gauteng region. The sample for this research was taken from this population and comprises of three (n=3) psychiatric patients, two Afrikaans speaking males and one Sotho speaking male. At the time of the interview, all three participants had been hospitalized and received further psychiatric treatment. The researcher made use of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as the method to gather and interpret the raw data. The data is discussed within three subordinate themes, namely the subjective experiences prior to, during and ensuing the strike. In addition global themes throughout the patient‟s subjective lived experiences are discussed without sequential significance. The results from this study support current literature that strikes have a direct impact on the treatment of psychiatric patients. In addition the subjective accounts of the patients did not indicate any significant deterioration in functioning during the strike. However in subsequent months following their discharge, all of the participants experienced some form of conflict which contributed to their rehospitalisation. “If We Stop, the World Stops” – A study on the viability of the strike as a tool of feminist resistance in São Paulo

Kiel, Alina January 2022 (has links)
This study investigates how the feminist movement in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, relates to the International Women’s Strike – a transnational feminist mass strike launched by the Argentinian feminist collective Ni Una Menos in 2017. Based on a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with representatives of 10 feminist organizations in São Paulo, this text explores the feasibility of a feminist strike in the context of São Paulo and highlights the structural challenges in its implementation. In addition, the text employs a qualitative literature review to examine the ways in which women in São Paulo have resorted to the strike as an instrument of their resistance since the early 20th century. Theoretically drawing on the theories of direct action and institutionalization of social movements, this work constitutes a synthesis of previous debates and sheds light on the implications that the institutionalization of the Brazilian feminist movement has had on the viability of direct actions such as the feminist strike. A central finding indicates a relative consensus that the feminist movement in São Paulo must first build a massive and popular feminist movement, before an inclusive and intersectional feminist strike can be carried out.

A critical analysis of the employees' right to strike and repercussions for participating in an unprotected strike : inconsistency on selective re-employment

Mmakola, Thukwe Solly January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (LLM.) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The study will analyse the legal position of the right to strike and the consequences of participating in an unlawful strike. The study will provide a brief practical implication of employees dismissed for participation in an unlawful and/or unprotected strike and the employer’s right to reemploy any employee dismissed for a misconduct relating to unlawful and/or unprotected strike. The study will further make a brief comparison with the labour law position relating to strikes in the United Kingdom (“UK”). At the end provide recommendations on how the law on participation on unlawful and/or unprotected strikes and reemployed of employees dismissed on misconduct relating to participation in an unprotected strike can be developed and improved.
