A Rhetorical Figure: Cicero in the Early EmpireKeeline, Thomas John January 2014 (has links)
My dissertation investigates the reception of Cicero in the early Roman Empire, focusing on the first 250 years after his death. I show that this reception is primarily constructed by the ancient rhetorical schoolroom, where young Romans first encountered Cicero, reading his speeches and writing Ciceronian declamations. Here they were exposed to a particular version of the man, with emphases often selected for political purposes. When they grew up, that schoolroom image of Cicero continued to permeate their thought and writing. My study unpacks this complex process and lays bare the early Empire's relationship with one of its most significant late Republican predecessors. / The Classics

Écrire sur les premiers empereurs : l'élaboration du récit chez Tacite et Suétone / Writing on the first emperors : the elaboration of the narrative in Tacitus and SuetoniusDuchêne, Pauline 08 December 2014 (has links)
How Roman authors conceived the writing of history, their historical methodology are very different from ours. For instance, it has been quite often found regrettable that, as their main goal was literary, they cancelled as much as possible any trace of their preparatory researches. But these informations exist, even though not presented as they would be today : there are direct interventions in the first person singular and plural ; introductive formulas ; similarities between the presentation of certain people or how some episodes are narrated. These elements reveal the informative and narrative frames which were to be respected and, as a consequence, the personal choices that were made by the authors. This PhD dissertation aims at studying these pecularities for the two Roman historians of the IInd century CE who wrote on the first emperors, Tacitus and Suetonius. It thus successively studies : their visible presence in their texts (chap. 1) ; the explicit mentions of sources, whether they be nominal or anonymous (chap. 2) ; the influence of the genre chosen to narrate that historical periode (chap. 3) ; the topic elements in the narration of certain scenes (chap. 4) ; the progressive elaboration of certain episodes (chap. 5) ; the general portrait of each emperor (chap. 6) ; how Tacitus and Suetonius conceived the writing of history and their relation to the past (chap. 7) ; how the Roman in general conceived that activity (chap. 8).This research thus demonstrates the pecularities of Roman historiography in the IInd century CE, in front of Greek and modern pratices. It also shows the personal relation Roman society had with its past, at the same time quite flexible about the narration of historical facts and subordinating it to the future.

[en] TACITUS S GAZE ON THE BRIGANTES: A STUDY OF THE USES OF THE PAST / [pt] O OLHAR DE TÁCITO SOBRE OS BRIGANTES: UM ESTUDO SOBRE OS USOS DO PASSADOISMAEL WOLF FERREIRA 27 December 2018 (has links)
[en] A Latin writer s view on one of the countless people who inhabited the Roman Empire territory. Words that travel through time and contribute to the construction of representations of the people that became known as Celts. The construction of a narrative that speaks about Another, but at the same time talks about One Self, presenting a game of identity borders. In this dissertation we bring the proposition of a detailed analysis of Tacitus s texts, where the author narrates and presents his opinion about the Brigantes. This People who has it s history directly related to the Romans, as it integrated the Roman Province of Britannia. The main goal of this research is to seek to understand the ways that Tacitus uses the past when he writes about the Brigantes.

Previous issue date: 2008-04-04 / This dissertation has as objective to establish an analysis about the essential positive aspects of the political administration of the Emperor Tiberius Caesar Augustus during his government (14 37 A.D), throughout the historical narrative of Publius Cornelius Tacitus (55 117? A.D) in his Annals. We show a discussion distributed in three chapters: the first chapter intends to be a presentation of biographical data of the author, of the principal characteristics which composes the formulation of his historical writing, its fundamental interests and the observation of the elements that show up in first instance the characterization that him makes of Tiberius Caesar Augustus. On the second chapter there is an analysis of the essential negative aspects about the Emperor showed up by Tacitus in his book, held up in a historiographical revision of the most important considerations composed by researchers of this subject. On the third chapter we intend to establish a counterpoint which shows positive aspects of the imperial administration of Tiberius Caesar Augustus, emphasizing the lavishness to private individuals and to the extent of City of Rome s population and provinces, just like the undertaking of public buildings, temples and others measures of administrative matter. Historiarvm libri. Estudo e tradução / Liber Historiarum. Study and translationFrederico de Sousa Silva 04 December 2014 (has links)
We analyze in the first part of this thesis the structure of composition of the Historiarum Liber, a work of maturity in which Tacitus intends to report the Roman history considering the agitated year of 69 d. C., the so called year of four emperors. Through strategies of refinement in the narrative composition, in which he uses a variety of rhetorical sources, the author pictures an ample frame of those things he considered abominable in Romans, as well as of those things which he tried to exalt as a good form of government. We dwell on the historical aspects of the year 69 and consider the literary aspects so as to narrate the post-Nero age, a moment in which the power is divided between the senate and the army. This way, taking into account what survived in history, the Historiarum liber proposes a meditation on the strategies of government, while pointing to the decadence of that which Tacitus judged as the strength of the empire. In the second part, we present the text established by Henri Goelzer for the French editor Les Belles Lettres, with our translation a latere, added by notes of grammatical, historical and literary nature.
