Exploring Media Coverage : A Comparative Analysis of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup in Germany

Wilke, Philine Sophie January 2024 (has links)
This paper explores the disparities in media coverage between men’s and women’s sports. It utilises the media coverage of the German sports news outlet, Sportschau, to examine the differences in terms of language, depth, amount, and framing between the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Through a comparative Content analysis, this study aims to uncover disparities in the media coverage of men’s and women’s football in Germany. By using Feminist Media Studies Theory, it seeks to reveal potential biases, inequalities, and differences in the portrayal of gender in sports media. The paper is applying qualitative and quantitative data analysis to gather broader insights to understand different aspects and perspectives of the media coverage. The research reveals enduring gender biases in German sports media. Sexist language was more common in the coverage of the women’s tournament as well as an emphasis of feminine qualities, personal narratives, and struggles.

Football in North and South Korea c.1910-2002 : diffusion and development

Lee, Jong Sung January 2012 (has links)
Politics has been an integral part of Korean football since the Japanese colonial era when the game became a vehicle for the Korean independence movement. The split between North and South Korea following the Korean War further accentuated the intrusion of politics into the domain of Korean football. As Koreans residing on either side of the border followed the game with intense interest and often regarded performance in international competition as a signifier of national prestige, the governments of both North and South Korea attached more importance to football than to any other sport and became its foremost patrons. In these circumstances it is not surprising to find that the relative performance of the national teams of North and South Korea mirrored changing economic and political conditions. Thus the rapid rise of North Korean football in the 1960s was a reflection of the state’s systematic and successful postwar reconstruction. Since the 1980s, however, South Korea, with its booming economy, has clearly surpassed its increasingly impoverished northern counterparts in the football field. Undoubtedly, the most two important events pertaining to the development of Korean football were the 1966 and 2002 World Cups. They provided occasions when nationalist sentiment could be expressed through football in both North and South Korea. They also provided opportunities for Korean footballers, through their achievements on the field, to show that the gap between the traditional periphery and core of world football was narrowing. At the same time, participation in competition at this level, whether by teams from North or South Korea, suggested that there was a recognizable and distinctive Korean football style nurtured in training camps where the emphasis was on producing players with sufficient stamina to run at their opponents for ninety minutes. Tireless running football has been the characteristic of successful teams from both North and South Korea. Thus, while recognizing the profound ideological differences that separate North and South Korea, this thesis also emphasizes the football tradition and culture that ethnically homogenous Koreans have in common.

The Price of Glory: A Socio-Economic Analysis of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Fortaleza, Brazil

Alvarez, Robert January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the social and economic impacts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Fortaleza, Brazil. The study used a budget analysis, and in depth interviews to ascertain the economic impact of the world cup games and the distribution of revenue across different sectors and socio-economic divisions within the local economy. A historical and vulnerability analysis was conducted through the examination of secondary sources (historical documents, census data, previous research on vulnerable populations) to identify groups and spaces of high social vulnerability. Qualitative data was then collected through in depth interviews with sources from all facets of society during the World Cup games and the following summer to identify the social impacts on these vulnerable groups and spaces. The thesis found that the final economic costs for infrastructure and stadium refurbishments associated with the World Cup in Fortaleza far exceeded the projected costs and the final economic impact on the local economy was half of projected estimates. While the city saw social benefits in the celebratory atmosphere and public security provided during the World Cup, there were also negative impacts on socially vulnerable groups and spaces including forced community relocations, increases in cases of commercial sexual exploitation, and rises in violent crime.

Protesting Sport : A Comparative Study of Media Representations of the London Olympics, Sochi Olympics and Brazil World Cup in AJE, BBCW and RT

Chiroiu, Luiza-Silvia January 2016 (has links)
Global sport competitions such as the Olympics and the World Cup were founded following universal principles of unity and peace and aiming to be celebrations of sportsmanship. Nowadays, however, they go beyond sport, being constructed as global media events in which both politics and media play an essential role. Caught in this triangle, the Olympics and the World Cup have re-emerged in the past years as sites of protests, after decades of relative calmness in this sense. This represents the point of entry into the analysis of global broadcasters, giving the chance to examine the way in which Al Jazeera English, BBC World News and Russia Today represent the protests they put in relation to sport competitions happening in different parts of the world. The chosen case studies are the London Olympics 2012, Sochi Olympics 2014 and Brazil World Cup 2014. The comparative analysis allows the drawing of similarities and differences between both the case studies and the broadcasters overall. The findings show that protests are dealt with differently according to the sport event they are related to, since some of them are legitimized and others are not. A major distinction, therefore, results in the manner in which the broadcasters use the protests in order to depict a certain version of the world. Global broadcasters offer, thus, multiple perspectives on the world as they carry what appears to be a heavy cultural baggage of the societies of origin.

Da conquista à resistência: Copa do Mundo, moradia, remoções e movimentos sociais em Fortaleza-CE / From the conquest to resistance: World Cup. dwelling, removals and social movements in Fortaleza-CE

Viana, Larissa de Alcantara 26 June 2015 (has links)
From the conquest to resistance: World Cup, dwelling, removals and social movements in Fortaleza-CE. 206 f. Dissertação (Mestrado em Arquitetura e Urbanismo) - Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, Universidade de São Paulo. São Paulo, 2015. This study aimed understand the role of the State in relation to housing and the process of struggle and resistance against the removal and threats of removal of the poor population in Fortaleza, in two different periods: the 1970s and 1980s, moment of the industrialization and of the consolidation of urban social movements and its operations to achieve housing and goods of collective consumption; and in the second decade of the 2000s, with the announcement of the FIFA World Cup 2014. The mega event exposed the State\'s actions, the reality of threatened removal communities and the emergence of a new social movement that questions the violations of the right to the city due to the Cup. It must be understood that is in periods of growth that the contradictions are intensified, as will be seen in the course of work, by analyzing the industrial development period, which binded industrial policy to the housing policy, and the time when the city prepares itself to host a mega event with strong repercussions worldwide, which creates great visibility and, therefore, it is necessary to present a city image in full development. The dissertation also discusses the process of urban despoliation and despoliation by the buildup that reaches the poor people in Fortaleza and, from this, inquire, facing the constant action of the State to benefit certain sectors of the society and repeatedly evict the poor people to outlying areas of the city, who actually serves this city model.

Em busca do feitiço perdido: a revista Placar entre a Seleção Brasileira de 1982, a Revolução São-Paulina e a Democracia Corintiana (1979-1984) / In search of the lost spell: Placar magazine between the Brazilian football team of 1982, the Revolução São-Paulina and the Democracia Corinthiana (1979-1984)

Rocha, Max Filipe Nigro 13 March 2014 (has links)
Diante da saída do jogador para o futebol europeu, Placar veria o seu projeto político naufragar / This dissertation had, as the main objective, investigate the coverage of Placar Magazine on the Brazilian football team, São Paulo Futebol Clube and Sport Club Corinthians on the period from 1979 to 1984. According to the Gramsci perspective, we consider the sports publishing as a private apparatus of hegemony, responsible for stimulating an hegemony crisis and establish a new consensus in the political field, and we evaluate the point of view of the periodical about Brazilian participation in the Cup of Spain, the implementation of a business model in São Paulo Futebol Clube called Revolução São Paulina and the development of Democracia Corintiana. Considering the magazine covers, photographs and texts, we try to recover the symbolic construction made by the weekly publication about football, as well as its simultaneous pursuit of rescuing the concept of futebol-arte and modernize the administrative structure of the sport through the implementation of business management. Therefore, the Brazilian team of 1982, appointed as the most representative example of the union between tradition and modernity, was used as a reference for national clubs even after the defeat. As representatives of the national ethos until the next World Cup, those sport clubs were responsible to ensure the return of our national artistic expression that was lost during the military years (1964-1985) and at the same time they had to adjust their structure to the business logic. The first club to be chosen as an example of modern football by the magazine was São Paulo, but if it had all the elements that would allow to recognize it as a model of rationalization of sport, it lacked the excitement necessary to definitively consolidate the weekly project. After that, Corinthians was elected as the new representative, able to unite the past and present because it had the soul that was missing in São Paulo. With the beginning of Democracia Corintiana, Placar recognized in Corinthians, the traditional qualities of futebol-arte that should be rescued and the modern features that would be responsible for building the concept of futebol-empresa. As a representative of this kind of plan named reforma modernizadora, the newsletter selected Socrates a Corinthians idol - because the athlete would be able to bring together aspects of the past and future and thus restore the national identity. When the soccer player decided to go to European football, the magazine political project failed

The present work aims to describe/to interpret the identity(ies) of the Brazilian subject that were produced and widespread by audio-visual media during the biggest sports events that took place in Brazil in this decade: the FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games Rio 2016. To accomplish this, we use and problematize the theoretical and methodological basis of the discours analysis made in Brazil based on the interpretation of Michel Foucault's works and the proposition of an historical semiology to answer the following questions: what were the indentities/subjectivities represented and built to the brazilian people during those events? What were the memories of certain "brazilianities" resumed and updated aiming the (re)production of these identities? What is the relevance of the political, social and economic current events to the discoursive construction of these identity models? By what means the media can effectively put those identities in the order of the discours? It is proposed to take a genealogical look at the production of identity models for the Brazilian subjects through hirstory's discontinuities to understand tha our indentities, as well our discourse analysis, are produced and (un)(re)built each day by the anthropophagic practice seen as absorption, processing and transformation of epistemologies but also identity practices inherited, in countries of the geographical south, from the european colonizers. By the analysis of music videos and audiovisual advertisements produced for the World Cup and the Olympic Games, it is found that the Brazilian subject emerges as a result of this epistemological and cultural anthropofagic ritual as a possibility of identity and foundation of a postcolonial thought

This dissertation consists of a study about the FIFA World Cup 2014 effects, from the power and resistance relations that were established around it.
