The objective of this work is to make an analysis of the football manifestations in the beginning of century XXI. In order to reach this objective we developed an empirical research on the football by means of the television and considering the transformation of this sport in a TV-show. We analyzed the 2005 Brazilian Championship and the 2006 World Cup realized in Germany. We have used the content analysis as method of exploration and the data analysis as we consider these methods the most efficient way to go beyond the meanings of the simple and superficial true of what is written and showed as real about this subject. Our research objectified to verify the tendency of the football, as one of the main activities of leisure in its composition as a merchandise and its relation with the new existing technologies. We realized during the researches that beyond the transformation of the soccer in a TV-shoe (which brings a singular identity relation to the fans that watch the games through the television than the ones who go to stadiums), a tendency towards the privatization of the relations and the degradation of the public spaces that historically were constructed for the collective use. We finalize our statement with a defense of the collectively spaces constructed and shared by all and the hope to see in the leisure a differentiated moment of questioning this individualistic reality we live in and a construction of solid identities to the individuals of our society / Mestrado / Estudos do Lazer / Mestre em Educação Física

Santos, Hamilton Toldo dos January 2003 (has links)
The study focused on the public policies of sport and leisure for Porto Alegre from 1989 to 2000. The purpose was to investigate whether the Department of Sports and Public Recreation (SERP) and the Secretary of Sports, Recreation and Leisure (SME) obtained success in their goals of democratizing sport and leisure in the city. Democratization was considered in the perspective of the access to sport and leisure programs and the participation of the population in the process of policy-making. Data collection comprised documents and interviews. The document analysis considered the city council legislation and financial plans and reports, plans and reports of SERP and SME, and documents on sport and leisure produced by the Worker’s Party. The interviews were carried out with 19 public authorities, community leaders, leisure and sport instructors and park users. The study allowed concluding that the democratization of sport and leisure in the first administration period (1989-1992) did not occur as expected, even though progress was achieved in the access to the programs and in the decision-making process, with the introduction of the Participative Budget (OP). In the second administration (1993-1996), the population access to sport and leisure programs presented improvements. In the power of decision, a larger access of the population existed, being created the SME and the section of sport and of leisure in the OP. However, the attendance and the participation in the process of decision-making continued lower than expected. The third administration period (1997-2000) was more participative, a decentralization process occurred in SME facilitating larger integration with the population. As consequence, there were amplification and diversification of the actions offered to the communities. The power decision was enlarged with the accomplishment of a municipal conference for discussion with the population of proposals of sports and leisure for the city.

Skholé : um modo de vida

Gandolfi, Neura Maria 22 December 2014 (has links)
A lifestyle with skholé seems to have been experienced in Classical Greece, in the beginning of the philosophy birth between the X and VII centuries B. C. and improves between the VI and IV centuries B.C. Aristotle is beyond question the one who gives you a more systematic treatment and a greater relevance to confer prestige when it postulates the onset of philosophy and science as a result of free time. Aristotle in his books, The Politics and the Nicomachean Ethics, uses structural concepts to demonstrate what types of life and how they interfere with the formation of character, the deliberation process and the achievement of the action. Understand the work as necessary to supply human needs and consumption, open debate on the free time to the contemplative life. The expository analysis goes around of the concept of skholé with the purpose to try to indicate the place on the contemporary philosophical-ethical debate, even in the context of applied ethics. Contemporary man needs to rescue a type of occupation that is not business, nor obligation, but skholé, entertainment and leisure as essential not only for the physical and mental health but also for the constitution of the moral character and an ethics and happy human existence.

Juventude, lazer e uso abusivo de alcool / Youth, leisure and abusive use of alcohol

Romera, Liana Abrão 27 May 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Heloisa Helena Baldy dos Reis / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-11T14:34:34Z (GMT). The contemporaneous relationship which has been established between abusive use of alcohol, youth and leisure has been the focus of concern and the theme of studies of different societal segments, due to both long and short term negative impacts that this has aroused. For this reason, this research aims to widen the knowledge about these subjects and phenomenon within the context where it occurs, in an attempt to have a better understanding of them. The relationship between leisure, youth and the use of drugs is regarded as one of the biggest contemporaneous phenomenon which has led to direct or indirect consequences in different segments of society. Alcohol is under the heading of licit drugs; therefore, it is licitly commercialized in this country. It is classified, according to CEBRID, as the favorite substance of consumption among Brazilian youngsters. Along with this situation, alcohol accounts for most car accidents, fights, assaults, arguments and deaths, especially among that age group. This is due to the reaction that it arouses within the nervous system, causing the person¿s mental state to change rapidly, going from a very euphoric to a very deep state of sadness, from very sweet to very aggressive mood. Furthermore, one loses one¿s capacity to ponder, to perceive one¿s surroundings and, therefore everything seems to be seen in a distorted way. Sport performance is one of the most important leisure events in the country and the large majority of fans are youngster who organize their team supporters (the cheerers), and these have been the main actors in violent scenes as well as the scenario where violence for no apparent reason can be observed. The aim of this study was to identify the use of alcohol within the youth, frequenty sports events ¿ Football, and to achieve that purpose, young supporters of a football team in the country were selected. With the use of qualitative method, the study was carried out through a combination of bibliographical and field research with the insertion of the researcher in football stadium during sport performances, with the application of AUDIT, an instrument to assess the degree of compromise between alcohol and the subject. 263 subjects were researched in different occasions within the football events in the sate of São Paulo during the paulista championship of 2007 and 2008. This challenge of approaching some specific existing aspects between leisure and drugs through the interrelation of current society represents an important attempt to understand the phenomenon, aiming to provoke a reflection and the necessary debate, however, taking care in order not to incur in moralistic and prejudiced conceptions which could lead to a simplistic and reductionist understanding of the theme proposed. Understanding the phenomenon, and the possible relationship between these and the conducts of risk through the pinpointing of alcohol use pattern and the activities carried out during free time, can lead us to propose actions that contribute both to the reduction of violence rate and the pattern of alcohol use within the population studied. / Doutorado / Educação Fisica e Sociedade / Doutor em Educação Física

A history of English women's cricket, 1880-1939

Threlfall-Sykes, Judy January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the history of women’s cricket from the 1880s until 1939. Although the primary focus of this thesis is the interwar years, it explores the earliest forms of women’s cricket to provide context for the motivation of individuals to promote the game as acceptable for women, and of those who denounced its suitability. By exploring societal concerns over correct masculine and feminine behaviour and ideals, this thesis provides insight into the methods that contemporaries adopted to contrast these restrictions. Through a detailed examination of local newspapers and archival sources, this thesis investigates the reactions by society to the concept of women playing what was hitherto seen as a masculine sport. In particular it examines the relationship not only between the women and men who organised cricket on a national scale, but between middle- and working- class women and how class played an equally important role as gender as a restricting influence on opportunities for working-class women to participate in leisure. As a consequence, this thesis will demonstrate the willingness of working-class women to participate in physical activities when given the opportunity, either through their male counterparts, or the workplace. Although academic work on the history of women’s sport is an expanding field, little attention has been paid to specific team games, with the exception of football. Similarly, research on women’s sport has primarily focused on women of the upper- and middle-classes, with the activities of working-class women being largely overlooked. This thesis aims to expand our knowledge of women’s cricket by not only providing a detailed examination of the national sporting organisations, but also to redress the knowledge gaps surrounding the participation in sport by working-class women.

Leisure tourists' satisfaction regarding their meal experience at Lesedi Cultural Village

Kleynhans, Heidi Cecelia 25 February 2004 (has links)
South Africa is increasingly becoming a destination for leisure tourists. Many are interested in cultural tourism. There is a need for empirical research into this field of hospitality and tourism, which this study aims to address. Lesedi Cultural Village (Lesedi) is an establishment where tourists can experience five of the ethnic cultures of South Africa. As part of the experience, a meal is served which is advertised as “The greatest African feast”. The actual food served is not necessarily culturally authentic in nature. Consequently expectations of the meal experience might be created which cannot be satisfied. This investigation commences with a literature study to establish the components of a meal experience, namely food, service and atmosphere. Thereafter factors are established through the literature survey that are required for satisfaction of a meal experience. These concepts are set out in an adaptation of an existing model of Kivela, Inbakaran and Reece (1999). The adapted model is used as the basis for a field survey of the opinions of leisure tourists visiting Lesedi. The survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. The results were analysed statistically. Prior to the survey, objectives for the study were set to compare the findings of the literature study with the respondents’ views about the meal experience at Lesedi. The objectives were to determine whether: Objective 1: leisure tourists’ expectations regarding the meal experience and its components were met, and whether they were satisfied with the current meal experience Objective 2: leisure tourists would be willing to return or refer others to Lesedi Objective 3: it is necessary to have a cultural-specific menu to satisfy the leisure tourists’ expectations Objective 4: certain components of the meal experience impressed the leisure tourists the most Objective 5: there is a significant relationship between food, service and atmosphere regarding the meal experience Objective 6: other aspects have significant relationships with the components of the meal experience (food, service and atmosphere) The tourists’ expectations and satisfaction with the meal experience were met to a high degree. The majority of respondents indicated they would return or refer others to Lesedi. While it is not necessary to have a cultural-specific menu to satisfy tourists’ expectations, the current menu could be enhanced by the inclusion of some cultural-specific items. Aspects of the components of the meal experience, which were considered by the respondents to have impressed them the most were also determined. A significant relationship exists between food and service but only a tendency to a relationship exists between food and atmosphere as well as between service and atmosphere. Service appears to play a slightly more important role in satisfying the meal experience than does food. Atmosphere supports the other two components (food and service). Suggestions were made, for consideration by the management of Lesedi, regarding possible improvements to the components of the meal experience. The development of the tourism industry in Libya

Danis, Omer Molood January 2006 (has links)
Libya is a country with a rich heritage in terms of culture, archaeological and historical sites, and a long Mediterranean coastline of sandy beaches. However, unlike the neighbouring countries of Tunisia and Egypt, which have similar attractions and which have capitalised upon these to develop successful tourist industries, Libya has not devoted its efforts to expand in this area, and this is partly a reflection of the fact that Libya has been an oil economy for the last forty years, and there has been no real need to attempt diversification of the economy on a grand scale; and partly a result of the political isolation of Libya as a result of UN and US sanctions. However, in recent years, the overreliance on oil revenues, and the potential of tourism to contribute substantially towards the economy, have encouraged the government to look towards tourism as a way to sustain the economy in the long term, and consequently, moves have been made to launch Libya as a tourist destination, especially since the lifting of the international sanctions mentioned. This study has focused on the efforts to date by Libya to refocus its economic strategy, and after reviewing the relevant literature, the researcher constructed three research instruments for use during fieldwork in Libya with different populations, in an attempt to establish the current status of the Libyan tourism industry. A questionnaire survey to establish demographic information about international tourists, and levels of satisfaction with the Libyan tourism product overall, was carried out with 282 tourists to Libya. An interview exercise was conducted with tourism administrators, and two indepth interviews were held with the UnderSecretary of State for Tourism Affairs, and the UnderSecretary of State for Education and Training Affairs, respectively. The tourist data was analysed using SPSS and crosstabulations were performed in order to identify the background of tourists (country of origin, age, sex, tourist behaviour) and their predispositions and opinions, by sex and age, on a range of dimensions within the two broader aspects of Accommodation, and Tourism Attractions. The findings reveal that women in general are less critical of Libya’s tourism product than men, and that tourists in the older age groups, who have a greater experience of travel, are more realistic in their expectations of what a developing country can offer to tourists. However, whilst Libya has immense potential as a tourist destination, with the possibility of offering several different tourist products, thereby being of interest to various market segments, it is currently unable to pursue these opportunities because of shortcomings in tourist infrastructure, in particular its lack of accommodation, tourist information, and service quality. What is currently being delivered to tourists is a substandard product which begins and ends with bureaucratic procedures at entry/exit points to the country, and which is characterised by an experience in between that reflects the lack of planning. The thesis concludes that a proper planning framework, which includes appropriate levels of investment, is necessary for a tourism industry in Libya to thrive and contribute towards the economy to the extent that the government hopes, and envisages.

Leisure, patriarchy and policy : an examination of processes and ideologies in the local state

Yule, Jean January 1995 (has links)
The research presented in this thesis sought to explore the ways in which patriarchal relations are constructed and contested within and through the leisure policy process. Drawing on structuration theory, socialist feminism and malestream critical sociological analyses, a methodology was developed for examining the situated practices of leisure professionals and local politicians in the local state at a time of economic and political restructuring in the late 1980s. The research explored the gender dimensions of recruitment to and experience of local government leisure professional and party political groups, and the extent to which women and men as gendered subjects were able to influence the leisure policy process. Of particular concern was the significance of leisure policy in feminist struggle. Also explored in the research were the kinds of gender ideologies circulating and the articulation of professional and party political ideologies with gender ideologies. An important consideration was the kinds of ideologies which were emerging and gaining ascendancy during the period of economic and political restructuring. Arts and recreation policy in two local authorities were selected for detailed study. The main method of inquiry was semi-structured interviews with a number of local professional officers (n=30) and local politicians (n=37). Visits to sports centres and art galleries provided additional sources of data, as did policy documents and observations of council and relevant committee and sub-committee meetings. The contribution of the research presented in this thesis is twofold : the development of a methodology for exploring the gender dimensions of the leisure policy process; and the generation of knowledge of the gender dimensions of leisure policy process. The research methodology implies a strategic relations approach to analysis of the state in which the state is theorised as a set of distinct institutions which at any one moment reflect the outcome of former struggles and provide the context for future struggles. The research thus gives an indication of the complex configurations of struggles within the local state leisure policy process, and brings into focus the articulation of some key dimensions of those struggles - gender, professional, party political, and local-central relations.
