[en] BORN AND GROWING BLACK IN THE COUNTRY OF WHITENING: THE EFFECTS OF RACISM ON CHILD SUBJECTIVITY / [pt] NASCER E CRESCER NEGRO NO PAÍS DO BRANQUEAMENTO: OS EFEITOS DO RACISMO NA SUBJETIVIDADE INFANTIL

KENIA SOARES MAIA 24 January 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis presents a study on the effects of racism on child subjectivity. The focus on studies of racism in relation to childhood comes from the desire to contribute in the construction of tools for psychology to deepen its knowledge and commitment to this theme. A cartography was done that served as an ethical political guideline in the construction of ways of researching racism, seeking with this, the non-reproduction of epistemological racism in writing about black in Brazil. Cartography is a method based on the thinking of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, which compromises the researcher in the horizontalization of the subject object relationship, seeking to undo the structural hierarchy of the historically produced academic epistemology. This cartographic positioning becomes a device in the democratization of the relations between researcher and the world to be known, initiating the changes that we intend to suggest in the direction of the deconstruction of inequalities and oppressions, starting from the researcher s position and the way of constructing narratives. Part of this research was carried out in the field, with children attending the Service of Applied Psychology of Estácio de Sá University and another was a bibliographical research that includes studies of Brazilian sociology writers such as Nina Rodrigues and Oliveira Viana; contemporary academic works on racism and childhood; authors of psychoanalysis like D. W. Winnicott and authors of psychology who approach racism like Frantz Fanon and Neuza Santos Souza. Jean-Paul Sartre was also one of the authors who referred us in this thesis from his writings on racism and anti-Semitism.

JUAN DE ARAUJO TELLES 19 April 2022 (has links)
[en] This research intends to analyze how racism and race constitute subjectivities, knowledge and practices in Psychology in the Brazilian reality. Race, despite being a social construction with no biological basis, still produces numerous psychosocial effects. The discussion is expanded by reflecting on the subjective and objective repercussions of race in the maintenance of racism and racial inequalities inside and outside the psycho-social field, based on the literature reviewed and anchored in decolonial and afrodiasporic perspectives. Finally, it questions the silencing of Psychology in the face of the problem of racism, calling on it to bring it to the center of its discussions, and to rethink its knowledge and practices, which are still predominantly based on Euro-whitecentric perspectives.

[pt] BAZAR DOS ESQUECIDOS: BRANQUITUDE, INSTITUIÇÕES E O MUNDO FUNK / [en] FORGETTER S BAZAR: WHITENESS, INSTITUTIONS AND FUNK S ART WORLD

LUCAS FORASTIERE SILVEIRA JUPY 21 September 2021 (has links)
[en] This dissertation presents the theme of whiteness power structures and their mobilization to repress the brazilian funk art world. The objectives are: 1) to expose how racism, classism, patriarchy and cisheteronormativity inform the suppression of subordinate cultures; 2) develop an analytic category that helps to perceive the whiteness dynamics of cultural extractivism; 3) map and interpret controlling images about the funk culture; 4) use the brazilian funk s example to comprehend normative power dynamics; 5) establish a more complex perception regarding the dimensions of violence, forgetfulness, resistance and persistence – considered beyond the control dimensions. Racializing the elite s subjects, is the attempted way to comprehend whiteness as a social place of privileges and power. A walk, guided by a seller-narrator that assumes some typical whiteness performances and may even be confused by the author, is proposed in order to develop the Forgetter s Bazar as an analytical category and a heterotopia. The first movement occurs so that the category s concept as well as its presentation as an analytical enterprise are formed. Following the dissertation s path, the Bazar s offers are presented through the mapping of controlling images created by local elites to stereotypically describe the funk art world. Lastly, we exit the Forgetter s Bazar in order to place it in the contemporary urban context. The hegemonical power dynamics are comprehended from the intersectional point of view. The funk art world appears as a masses popular culture that resists to these oppressions, although, unavoidably, gets influenced by them.

[en] RACISM AND CONFEDERATE CULTURE IN THE CONTEMPORARY TIMES: FROM THE AMERICAN SOUTH TO BRAZILIAN LANDS / [pt] RACISMO E CULTURA CONFEDERADA NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE: DO SUL ESTADUNIDENSE ÀS TERRAS BRASILEIRAS

ROBERTO CARLOS DA SILVA CABRAL JR 21 March 2024 (has links)
[en] In the 19th century, as a form of resistance to the attempt of abolishing African slavery in the United States of America, the southern states of the country united under the name of Confederation. Structured on the ideology of white supremacy, this political union fought in the name of slavery during the years of civil war. More than a century after the war, the memory of this historical period remains alive throughout the American south, where Confederate flags fly and Confederate monuments occupy prominent places. Through a series of immigration events, this culture branched out to other parts of the world, reaching the country of Brazil. The city of Santa Bárbara D oeste, in São Paulo, is the national epicenter of this culture, where a large Confederate festival is celebrated annually. This text explores the contemporary Confederate culture and examines the unexpected presence of this culture in Brazil, using a narrative approach to explain its manifestations and impacts on material reality, exploring the intricate relationship between the confederation and the concepts of whiteness and racism.

[en] A STUDY OF WHITENESS WITHIN A CONTEXT OF RACIAL RELATIONS RECONFIGURATION IN BRAZIL, 2003-2013 / [pt] UM ESTUDO SOBRE BRANQUITUDE NO CONTEXTO DE RECONFIGURAÇÃO DAS RELAÇÕES RACIAIS NO BRASIL, 2003-2013

22 September 2016 (has links)
[en] A study that aims to understand the course of identity (re) construction of white individuals who are submitted to a process of (re) cognition of their own racial belonging. Therefore, this work focuses on Brazilian racial relations, from 2003 onwards, with emphasis on the political configurations in the frame of the struggle against racism. The central subject of the work is the Brazilian whiteness, and its related power negotiation, within the present context of the national racial relations. The hypothesis of the study is that the permanence of a melting pot ideology, understood as a long lasting structure (Braudel, 1992), gives support to the idea of a formal equality and impedes the acquisition of racial literacy by the white individuals from all social strata and, particularly, for those who belong to the population living on subaltern social spaces. It is assumed that the social representations of the poor white are similar to that of the black, which makes it difficult to perceive the racial inequities and its social implications. Adopting the racial literacy theoretical framework as a reference, this research combines participating observation and individual interviews. The observation took place within a group composed by near 30 students of the discipline Afro-Brazilian History and Culture in a College located in the East Zone of São Paulo City. The interviews were applied to 11 of those students self defined as white or pardo (mestizo). The conclusions indicate that, although it is possible to observe important transformations taking place as a consequence of the Federal Law No. 10.639/2003 implementation, the hypothesis of this work seems to be confirmed as the structures related to the racial democracy myth are systematically reproduced and actualized, which impedes the racialization of the identities, as a consequence, and a new power negotiation between whites and blacks in Brazilian society.

[pt] BRANQUITUDE E EDUCAÇÃO: UM ESTUDO ENTRE PROFESSORAS DA REDE MUNICIPAL CARIOCA / [en] WHITENESS AND EDUCATION: A STUDY AMONGST TEACHERS OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN RIO DE JANEIRO

ANNA LUIZA BARBOSA MARTINS 09 December 2019 (has links)
[en] This research s objective was to study the white ethnic-racial identity as perceived by teachers working in municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro, selected by convenience sampling. The goal was to investigate how these self-categorized white educators comprehend their own whiteness in face of their public at school - mostly black pupils. This work consists of a dialogue between Critical Social Psychology and Education, using the technique of individual interviews, duly analyzed by the Content Analysis method. The article indicates that white educators need to recognize themselves as racialized and that collective actions and public policies must be enforced to deal with the reverberations of racial inequality in the school environment.

[pt] A RETÓRICA RACIALISTA DA BRANQUITUDE NAS DISPUTAS PELA DEFINIÇÃO DA IDEIA DE BRASILEIRO (1820-1847) / [en] THE RACIALIST RHETORIC OF WHITENESS IN THE DISPUTES OVER THE DEFINITION OF THE IDEA OF BEING BRAZILIAN (1820-1847)

FABIANA RODRIGUES DIAS 14 April 2021 (has links)
[en] I seek, in this dissertation, to problematize the racialist dimension of pioneering texts referred to the discussion of the idea of patria (homeland) and nation, in the wake of the independent debates that emanated from Rio de Janeiro during the first half of the 19th century. By considering the hypothesis that such a dimension constituted a decisive aspect in the guiding of the attitudes and imaginings of those who pertained to the better sort of society at the time, I analyze the writings of José Bonifácio, Gonçalves de Magalhães, Torres-Homem, Bernardo Pereira de Vasconcelos, Januário da Cunha Barbosa and K.F.P. von Martius. I discuss the uses and appropriations these authors made of the broad rhetoric of hierarchizing peoples, in accordance with their own expectations concerning the definition of Brazil and of Brazilians. Therefore, I try to demonstrate the ways in which these authors have mobilized, each one in its own way, the vast repertoire of the rhetoric of a self-referent whiteness identified with civilization. In addition, I demonstrate how centuries-old notions of moral and phenotypic inferiority of those others, namely the Negroes and the Indians, along the State-building process and its definition of what nationhood should mean.

[pt] MULHERES BRANCAS, BRANQUITUDE E AFETO: REFLEXÕES ACERCA DE PERFORMANCES RACIAIS E AFETIVAS BRANCAS, O SENTIR CRÍTICO E O FAZER ACADÊMICO / [en] WHITE WOMEN, RACISM AND AFFECT IN THE BRAZILIAN CONTEXT: REFLECTING UPON PERFORMANCES OF RACE AND AFFECT, ACADEMIC PRACTICES AND CRITICAL FEELING

THAIS REGINA SANTOS BORGES 31 October 2022 (has links)
[en] The aim of this paper is to reflect upon how Brazilian racism (Gonzalez, 1984, Munanga, 2010) is actualized by whiteness (Bento, 2002, 2022, Carneiro, 2005, Schucman, 2012, Schucman; Cardoso et al., 2014, Muller; Cardoso et al., 2017, Conceição, 2020) as an apparatus of power (Foucault, 1978) in discursive performances by white women who belong to what Jessé Souza (2017) classifies as critical middle-class in Brazil (Souza, 2017). To this end, this thesis follows qualitative-interpretative methodology from Narrative Analysis (Bastos; Biar, 2015) to investigate how whiteness shapes participants white racial and affective performances (Ahmed, 2004, Melo, 2019, 2021) in the small stories (Georgakopoulou, 2015) shared by them in exploratory conversations (Miller, 2003), in which we reflect critically-affectively on what it means to be white in Brazil and where white privilege resides in their life stories of accomplishment. In my writing, I vent issues concerning the critical academic doing in the context of INdisciplinary Applied Linguistics (Moita Lopes et al, 2006, 2013) and critical feeling (Borges, 2017a, 2017b, 2020, 2021), a concept I have been working on since my dissertation, which refers to the becoming of sensibility that nurtures and is nurtured in critical literacy processes, whose focus is critical-affective reflexivity (focus on affect), which merges with critical thinking (focus on cognitive aspects) and critical action (focus on political aspects). The reflexive notes of this research confirm the inexorability of whiteness as an apparatus of power which allows the actualization of racism in performances of race and affect by women who belong the white racial group in Brazil, pointing to their fundamental role in this process, even in the context of the so-called critical academia. Furthermore, it indicates that focus on undergoing processes of critical racial literacy (Ferreira, 2022), fostering critical feeling (Borges, 2017a, 2017b, 2020, 2021) and joining study with coalition in the under-commons of the University (Harney; Moten, 2013, 2021) may be a way to mitigate the effects of these performances in the White-Cube Academy (Kilomba, 2019a).

[en] INSIDE THE BREXIT COMPLEX: FEELING RACE AND CLASS IN THE DOMINANT IMAGENS OF THE VOTE LEAVE CAMPAIGN / [pt] POR DENTRO DO COMPLEXO BREXIT: SENTINDO RAÇA E CLASSE NAS IMAGENS DOMINANTES DA CAMPANHA DO VOTO LEAVE

RAPHAEL SANTOS DA SILVA 03 November 2022 (has links)
[en] This master s thesis seeks to understand the mobilisation of images of British culture, which are already fraught with affections, in pro-Brexit discourses and the relations between these images, taking into account the category of race. Having as theoretical contribution the studies on affections and emotions in International Relations and the reception of Lacanian psychoanalysis in world politics studies, I reflect on the extent to which a postcolonial melancholy and an anti-immigration sentiment, anchored in the attachment to certain versions of the nation and crossed by whiteness, contributed to the decision of part of the population to withdraw the United Kingdom s from the European Union. Following an affective discourse analysis, I examine the affective and symbolic dimension of the Leave Campaign discourses in 2015 and 2016, the year of the referendum. I gather discourses made by Brexit-supporting politicians as well as pictures and photographs in order to more closely understand the emotional appeal of these discourses and how these emotions are associated with symbols present in the collective imaginary, for example, the nation and the National Health Service (NHS). I argue that the Leave Campaign played a relevant political role in emotionally directing segments of the population that were against immigration because this campaign was able to better understand and channel a particular affective atmosphere. I hope this research will contribute to the burgeoning field of affect and emotion studies in world politics regarding the emotional appeal of political discourses and affective investments in the nation, as well as point to new interpretationss of Brexit through an affective analysis which takes into account the persistence of the category of race.

[en] PRISON OR MASS GRAVE: (NECRO)POLITICS OF DRUGS AND BESIEGED TERRITORIES IN POST-DICTATORSHIP RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] PRISÃO OU VALA: (NECRO)POLÍTICA DE DROGAS E TERRITÓRIOS SITIADOS NO RIO DE JANEIRO PÓS-DITADURA

MATHEUS GUIMARAES DE BARROS 27 April 2023 (has links)
[en] This dissertation is aimed at unveiling the colonialist rationality of the war on drugs that has informed public security policy in the state of Rio de Janeiro since the end of the military regime. It is a theoretical study based on bibliographic, statistical, legislative, and, occasionally, journalistic sources. Its epistemological foundation is the concept of necropolitics, which Achille Mbembe developed as the gravitational center of a more comprehensive reflection on the modern world. Considering the period between 1988 and 2018, we demonstrate that the war on drugs in Rio de Janeiro is part of a racist mechanism that, backed by whiteness and propelled by the state violence typical of neoliberalism, sophisticatedly perpetuates the secular process of extermination of the poor and black people who live in the favelas and outskirts. This war moves and legitimizes, in impoverished urban areas, a governmental management through terror by exceeding the limits of power in order to kill, directly or indirectly, bodies deemed disposable and hostile, enemies of the Brazilian civilizing project, now embodied in the racially constructed image of the drug dealer. Prison and mass grave are seen as two basic manifestations of this genocidal dynamic in this context. This study further points to the importance of another way to deal with the drug issue, one that is different from war prohibitionism, without leaving aside the necessity of a radical critique of the war-like rationale that sustains it, which demands questioning both the neoliberal hegemony and the historical preservation of white privilege in Brazil.
