[en] CARTOONS AND TEACHING HISTORY: A BET FOR LITERACY IN THE EARLY SCHOOLING SERIES / [pt] DESENHOS ANIMADOS E ENSINO DE HISTÓRIA: UMA APOSTA PARA O LETRAMENTO NAS SÉRIES INICIAIS DA ESCOLARIZAÇÃORAFAEL BASTOS ALVES PRIVATTI 02 May 2017 (has links)
[en] Literacy in Portuguese in inciais grades of elementary school is numerous researchers reflection object, especially the fundamental place that writing and reading occupy in the schooling process. However, in view of a reading that goes beyond the written text boundaries, extending to a reading of the world, literacy in history, simultaneously to literacy in Portuguese also presents fundamental in the construction of solidary subjects and citizens process , aware of their places in the world. In this sense, we sought to develop methodology anchored in the use of cartoons in the early grades for literacy in English Language and History. The cartoons are familiar and recurring imagistic language to considerable part of students of all elementary school. The materials (cartoons and supporting materials) were produced on DVD and also estãodisponíveis on YouTube (Channel Animations Revolution), with wide and full freedom to viewers to signify them and significance to them. The cartoons have three thematic matrices: Histories and Cultures Afro-Brazilian, Histories and Cultures of Africa and the Histories and Cultures of Indigenous Peoples Brazilians, all present in Law 11645/2008. contacts the students in their first years of schooling, with themes of history in a critical perspective are efficient strategies in the process of forming plurals historical consciousness.

[en] THE READING CLASSES EXPERIENCE: CONCEPTIONS AND PRACTICES / [pt] SALAS DE LEITURA: CONCEPÇÕES E PRÁTICASLEDA MARIA DA FONSECA 02 July 2004 (has links)
analisar as atividades realizadas nesses espaços,
importantes referenciais. / [en] This study focus The Reading Class experience of the public
schools in Rio de Janeiro city. Its main objective is to
analyze the activities that take held in those schools,
chiefly, the practices instituted with the literary
text. In order to sign the historical context of the
reading classes I have analyzed the official documents that
regularize the program since its implementation. So I have
verified that the reading classes would not be anymore
privileged spaces for the reading practices of literary
texts, as they were in the origin, to be nowadays
multimedia spaces. Besides the documental analyses, I have
observed two reading classes and I have made a lot of
interviews with teachers and students of those schools.
With the field research, I could verify that there are
different conceptions and expectations concern the program.
I understand this kind of search under a socio-historical
perspective, where Mikhail Bakhtin's ideas are important
statements.

[en] A STUDY OF WHITENESS WITHIN A CONTEXT OF RACIAL RELATIONS RECONFIGURATION IN BRAZIL, 2003-2013 / [pt] UM ESTUDO SOBRE BRANQUITUDE NO CONTEXTO DE RECONFIGURAÇÃO DAS RELAÇÕES RACIAIS NO BRASIL, 2003-201322 September 2016 (has links)
O estudo focaliza as relações
O objeto teórico deste estudo é a questão
subalternidade social.
[en] A study that aims to understand the course of identity (re) construction of
white individuals who are submitted to a process of (re) cognition of their own
racial belonging. Therefore, this work focuses on Brazilian racial relations, from
2003 onwards, with emphasis on the political configurations in the frame of the
struggle against racism. The central subject of the work is the Brazilian whiteness,
and its related power negotiation, within the present context of the national racial
relations. The hypothesis of the study is that the permanence of a melting pot
ideology, understood as a long lasting structure (Braudel, 1992), gives support to
the idea of a formal equality and impedes the acquisition of racial literacy by the
white individuals from all social strata and, particularly, for those who belong to
the population living on subaltern social spaces. It is assumed that the social
representations of the poor white are similar to that of the black, which makes it
difficult to perceive the racial inequities and its social implications. Adopting the
racial literacy theoretical framework as a reference, this research combines
participating observation and individual interviews. The observation took place
within a group composed by near 30 students of the discipline Afro-Brazilian
History and Culture in a College located in the East Zone of São Paulo City. The
interviews were applied to 11 of those students self defined as white or pardo
(mestizo). The conclusions indicate that, although it is possible to observe
important transformations taking place as a consequence of the Federal Law No.
10.639/2003 implementation, the hypothesis of this work seems to be confirmed
as the structures related to the racial democracy myth are systematically
reproduced and actualized, which impedes the racialization of the identities, as a
consequence, and a new power negotiation between whites and blacks in Brazilian
society.

[pt] A PRESENÇA DA SOCIOLOGIA NO ENSINO MÉDIO: LETRAMENTO CÍVICO E DEMOCRACIA / [en] THE PRESENCE OF SOCIOLOGY IN HIGH SCHOOL: CIVIC LITERACY AND DEMOCRACYLAURA DE ALMEIDA BRAGA ROSSI 18 September 2015 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to discuss the presence of Sociology in Brazilian schools from three different perspectives: its arrival, its implementation process and the possibilities it offers. Firstly, through examining the institutionalization of the social sciences in the country and its relation to the law 11.684 from 2008, which established Sociology as an obligatory class in high schools. Secondly, the transformation of this effort into the development of curriculum and assessment programs nationwide, as well as assessment results from three different states that allow a discussion about student learning in this discipline. At last, regarding the assessment results, a debate is drawn about the purposes of the presence of a Sociology class in school level, more specifically its possibility to contribute to civic literacy. The general hypothesis is that students are having difficulty learning contents that are farther from the common sense that surrounds them. That means they are learning contents that are already present in their day-to-day lives, contents that have been already sociologized.

[en] KNOWLEDGE-CONSTRUCTION IN AN ENGLISH CLASSROOM: GENRE-BASED LITERACY AND MULTIMODALITY / [pt] A CONSTRUÇÃO DO CONHECIMENTO EM SALA DE AULA DE INGLÊS: LETRAMENTO EM GÊNERO E MULTIMODALIDADEREGINA MARIA BRAGA ESCH 27 July 2005 (has links)
Baseio-
me em Allwright &
social e cognitivo do letramento e em Kress (2000), Stein
(2000) e Royce (2002)
no que concerne à complementaridade intersemiótica como
facilitadora do
processo de construção do conhecimento. Textos produzidos
pelos alunos foram
selecionados para compor o corpus deste estudo,
exemplificando as etapas de
escritura, reescritura, escritura ilustrada e transposição
para histórias em
quadrinhos desenvolvidas durante uma unidade do livro
texto. Com suporte em
Halliday & Hasan (1989) e Ventola (1987a), foram
analisadas a configuração
[en] This study investigates how a genre-based methodology,
focused on
literacy development, as suggested by the National
Curricular Parameters, and
anchored in multimodality facilitates knowledge-
construction by a group of
English as a Foreign Language students, aged 9-10, in the
3rd grade of a private
elementary school in Rio de Janeiro. This research is
based on Allwright &
Bailey (1991), and Wenger (1998), for whom the classroom
is a space favourable
to knowledge-construction; on Kern (2000) and Johns
(1997), whose theories
focus on the social and cognitive aspects of literacy, and
on Kress (2000), Stein
(2000), and Royce (2002), concerning the intersemiotic
complementarity which
facilitates the knowledge-construction process. The corpus
of this study is
composed of student-produced texts selected to exemplify
the stages of drafting,
re-drafting, illustrated text-writing and text-
transposition to comic strips, which
were developed during the exploration of a text book unit.
The analysis of this
material was carried out according to Halliday and Hasan
(1989) and Ventola
(1987a), for whom language is an expression of social
behaviour in situational
contexts, and according to Kress & van Leeuwen (1996), who
point out the
importance of the visual semiotic system as a resource for
meaning- making. The
text analysis and the reflection on the pedagogical work
developed suggest the
importance of offering challenging activities that are
focused on a genre-based
approach, as resources for learners to appropriate
themselves of the target
language in social contexts, while showing in their texts
their social-historicalcultural
experiences.

[en] This work aims to investigate the literacy difficulties presented by high school students of a state school located in a low income neighborhood of the Northern Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The author of this dissertation is an English language teacher in this context and became interested in the subject when she realized that the challenges faced by her students echoed news published in newspapers, electronic, radio and television portals about the weak performance of Brazilian students in such national and international examinations as SAEB, ENEM and Pisa. Seeking to understand and contribute to such a serious social situation, this qualitative-interpretative research is considered an Applied Linguistics study and was carried out with several 1st year high school English classes, in which the researcher was also the teacher. The theoretical framework was anchored not only in the concepts of literacy, both in the mother tongue and in the foreign language, as presented by Street (1984), Soares (1998) and Rojo (2009) but also in the ideas of Exploratory Practice (Allwright; Hanks, 2009). Thus, the teacher-researcher systematized her daily observations regarding the literacy work that she had been doing since 2010, from the perspective of textual genres as forms of life and social actions (Miller, 1984; Bazerman, 2006), with entering high school students. The reflective understandings achieved confirm the need for intensifying mother tongue and foreign language teaching and learning through a genre pedagogy and also suggest the importance of encouraging further studies on school literacy practices.

[en] WHAT SCHOOL IS POSSIBLE?: GENERATING UNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT THE CHALLENGES DURING SCHOOL ROUTINE AND PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE CLASSES AT A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN A POOR COMMUNITY / [pt] QUE ESCOLA É POSSÍVEL?: GERANDO ENTENDIMENTOS SOBRE OS DESAFIOS NO COTIDIANO ESCOLAR E NAS AULAS DE LÍNGUA PORTUGUESA EM UMA ESCOLA PÚBLICA NA FAVELACINARA MONTEIRO CORTEZ 03 April 2017 (has links)
[en] The focus of this study is the Portuguese language teaching practice under macro and micro perspectives with everyday school challenges at a public school located in a poor community in Zona Oeste, Rio de Janeiro. The purpose consists in generating understandings about some questions which emerged from classroom interactions and resulted in loggerheads and resistance against pedagogical labor, affecting the teaching-learning process in that context. The discussion and reflections were oriented by exploratory potential-like literacy activities mainly performed by two 8th grade classes during the year 2014. Adopting a Transgressive Applied Linguistics perspective and being aligned to propositions that question the traditional scientific methods, this study suggests the decoloniality of our practices as researchers, being guided by autoethnographic and ethnographic views. The proposal is based upon Exploratory Practice, as a pedagogical process focus, seeking to prioritize the quality of life in the classroom with active participation of all involved. Accommodating that proposal, I defend the idea of a Portuguese Language teaching focusing an interpretative reaction notion during literacy practices and a more conscious attitude from teachers towards language as praxis. Data is composed of a series of pedagogical sequences in classroom activities, as well as institutional information, accounts, reports, interviews and writings from my diary and field notes, which have been generated since my insertion in the municipal teaching system in 2013. The first accomplished activities pointed out to the traditional teaching models as the ones legitimated to be used in the PL classes and suggested the ratification of my role as a teacher from the students authorization. With the exploratory activities, the students perceptions about oneself and the other in the school context indicated denaturing of preconcepts and beliefs, enhancing the interrelations in the classroom. The achieved understandings collaborated with the apprehension of the other as someone potentially equal, emphasizing alterity as a necessary and permanent exercise to social and pedagogical practices. There was a change in the attitude towards the legitimating of PL, underlying the comprehension that the use of language and the literacy activities are present in everyday actions. The existence in that school context demanded a kind of research which questioned the very way of researching, especially by enabling the different knowledge carried by the students and their local histories to be understood as episteme, and creating visibility to the different worlds and cultures in contact at school space as possible worlds under construction. In this respect, the idealization of a school which could respond to all the needs of the less privileged classes is replaced by the perception that thinking about a possible school according to the local specificities turns out to be a more coherent and engaged proposal to those other possible worlds and actors towards the creation of contingent, procedural and continuing intelligibilities.

Janeiro.
trechos do texto
original para resumi-lo; outros fazem recorte-colagem
utilizando marcadores
que forçam coesão, gerando frases desconexas. No
entanto,
os resumos da
segunda fase mostraram-se mais reduzidos, sinalizando
assim maior
capacidade de sumarização. Conseqüentemente, a
quantidade
havido maior compreensão do texto original. Estes
resultados sugerem que
uma intervenção mais sistemática pode apontar caminhos
para o
desenvolvimento no processo de leitura e compreensão de
textos de naturezas
diversas. / [en] Several studies concerning reading comprehension have
been published
aiming to offer better learning opportunities in this
context. Differently from other
studies, this study aims to investigate how the concept
maps, which have
already been used in other contexts, are related with the
teaching of
Portuguese as L1. This study is based on ethnography
principles and analyses
the summaries of students in two phases, one before the
intervention and the
other after the intervention with concept maps. Besides,
it triangulates the data
from the summaries with information of interviews with ten
students, which aim
at elucidating how the texts were summarized. We also used
field notes, the
ranking of the summaries in inverted order by the teachers
of Portuguese and
Text Production, and information about the performance of
a class of first year
High School of a State School in Petrópolis, Rio de
Janeiro. The results of the
first summaries indicate that the majority of the students
copy parts of the
original text trying to summarize them. Other students
copy and paste parts of
the text using discourse markers which force cohesion,
creating meaningless
sentences. On the other hand, the summaries from the
second phase were
shorter, which indicates better capacity of summarizing.
Consequently, the
volume of copy also decreased, indicating that, at least
in some cases, an
increase of comprehension seems to have taken place. These
results suggest
that a more systematic intervention with concept maps can
indicate ways to
promote development in the reading and in the
comprehension process of texts
of varied sources.

[en] This dissertation aims to produce an essay that problematizes the representations of the colonialism and slavery times of brazilian history and the violence fixed by racism in contemporary artistic works. To read such questions, I analyze the book Plantation memories: episodes of everyday racism (2019[2008]), by the portuguese multidisciplinary artist Grada Kilomba and the fiction feature film Vazante (2017), directed by the brazilian filmmaker Daniela Thomas, in dialogue with the event of its reception and critical repercussion in the brazilian media. From these two works that start from different perspectives, approaches and temporalities, the research seeks to reflect on how the scars of colonial and slave violence are performed in contemporary times and how the notions of place of listening / place of speech, racial literacy and white fragility have been activated and transformed in contemporary vocabulary to think about raciality and white privilege.

[en] FUNCTIONAL LITERACY AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF CELL PHONE PRINTED PROMOTIONS / [pt] O LETRAMENTO FUNCIONAL O ENTENDIMENTO DA COMUNICAÇÃO EM ANÚNCIOS DE CELULARMARIANA BRAGA NOGUEIRA CUPOLILLO 17 November 2010 (has links)
comportamento do consumidor.
inteligibilidade e a especificidade desses materiais promocionais. Finalmente o
[en] This thesis focuses on the type of language used in advertisements and
publications for cell phones and its impact as a source of information for the
consumer behavior. These publication instruments can actually be not understood
by about 1/3 of the population, which is considered functional illiterate, but by
others that don’t understand technical languages, jargons, and foreign terms. This
fact can result in large financial losses and misapplication of the marketing
communication tools. The research at issue was inspired by S-TOHFLA, which is
an international test of functional health literacy of patients used in the health care
setting. It measured the ability of the respondents to understand aspects and
attributes used in press media advertisements about cell phones. Thereto, a test
was inspired by the Cloze procedure which consists in fulfilling gaps with the
most appropriate word, containing four multiple choice options for each question.
That test was administrated to 202 respondents, and the answers contributed to
assess their comprehension about the theme. The results point out that the
respondents, according to their level of income, literacy, age and gender, have
different levels of understanding the subject - for example, the higher the level of
