[en] ENGLISH FOR TOURISM: A NEEDS ANALYSIS OF THE LEARNING SITUATION AND THE MARKET / [pt] INGLÊS PARA A ÁREA DE TURISMO: ANÁLISE DE NECESSIDADES DO MERCADO E DE APRENDIZAGEM

MARIA ANGELA DA SILVA 07 March 2008 (has links)
[en] The aim of this study is to identify, first, the learning needs of students that study English as a foreign language in a technical course in Tourism and Hotel Management in a state school, and, second, the target needs for work in the market; in addition, the study compares the students` needs and market needs with the course syllabus followed in the school. The data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and documents about the Tourism course and about the English course. The main theoretical framework of this study is based on Hutchinson & Waters (1987/1996), Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998/2005) and Robinson (1991), authors of the approach called ESP - English for Specific Purposes, or Inglês Instrumental, as it is known in Brazil. The analysis of the data confirms that, in both learning and target situations, speaking and listening skills are extremely important. However, the teaching of reading skills for genres such as web sites, brochures, and regulations must be reevaluated and adjusted to the reality of student and market needs. Suggestions are presented for new directions toward making the ESP course under study more suitable for both the learner and the market.

[en] SERVICE ENCOUNTERS IN ENGLISH AS LINGUA FRANCA USAGE CONTEXT: OVERLAPS AS STRATEGIES OF SOLIDARITY / [pt] ENCONTROS DE SERVIÇO EM CONTEXTOS DO USO DE INGLÊS COMO LÍNGUA FRANCA: SOBREPOSIÇÕES COMO ESTRATÉGIAS DE SOLIDARIEDADE

ALYNE LEITE DE OLIVEIRA DE PAOLA 29 September 2010 (has links)
[en] Studies in intercultural communication have, in general, focused on misunderstandings and failure in this type of interaction. In this work, it is intended to investigate the participants’ efforts to be successful in a service encounter that has English as a lingua franca. The focus of this study is the use of overlaps, dealt under the theory of the Conversation Analysis. Although the overlaps can function as a mechanism of turn taking, usually followed by the taking of the conversational floor, the use of overlaps, in the data analyzed, has shown that the participants are oriented to an understanding, as it can be seen when they happen in a non-relevant transitional place. Therefore, as the results indicate, the overlaps, in the majority of the cases, function to signal solidarity, benefiting the interaction and, consequently, the solution of the problems which orient the action of the client and the attendant.

[en] THE INFINITIVE NOMINALIZATION: A STUDY OF GERUNDIVE NOMINALIZATIONS AND DERIVED NOMINALS IN PORTUGUESE AND IN ENGLISH / [pt] A NOMINALIZAÇÃO INFINITIVA: UM ESTUDO DE NOMINALIZAÇÕES GERUNDIVAS E DERIVADOS NOMINAIS NO PORTUGUÊS E NO INGLÊS

PAULO ROBERTO DA SILVA CIDADE 27 January 2015 (has links)
[en] The goal of this study is to investigate English and Portuguese with regard to gerundive nominalizations and derived nominals. Gerundive Nominalizations only occur in English and are regular and semantically predictable, while derived nominals are not regular and have a great range of semantic interpretations, therefore little predictability (Chomsky, 1970). In order to proceed to the contrastive study we selected two books originally written in English, from each of which a chapter was randomly taken to serve as a corpus for the analysis. Our analysis led to the following conclusions: (a) In Portuguese, the nominal infinitive is systematically used for the action gerundive structures of English; (b) for the action nominal, the Portuguese correspondence is a deverbal noun; (c) there are different verbal structures to represent factual gerundives in Portuguese; and (d) as an unexpected result, derived nominal do have semantic predictability, situation which could be considered as one of systematic polysemy.

[en] KNOWLEDGE-CONSTRUCTION IN AN ENGLISH CLASSROOM: GENRE-BASED LITERACY AND MULTIMODALITY / [pt] A CONSTRUÇÃO DO CONHECIMENTO EM SALA DE AULA DE INGLÊS: LETRAMENTO EM GÊNERO E MULTIMODALIDADE

REGINA MARIA BRAGA ESCH 27 July 2005 (has links)
[en] This study investigates how a genre-based methodology, focused on literacy development, as suggested by the National Curricular Parameters, and anchored in multimodality facilitates knowledge- construction by a group of English as a Foreign Language students, aged 9-10, in the 3rd grade of a private elementary school in Rio de Janeiro. This research is based on Allwright & Bailey (1991), and Wenger (1998), for whom the classroom is a space favourable to knowledge-construction; on Kern (2000) and Johns (1997), whose theories focus on the social and cognitive aspects of literacy, and on Kress (2000), Stein (2000), and Royce (2002), concerning the intersemiotic complementarity which facilitates the knowledge-construction process. The corpus of this study is composed of student-produced texts selected to exemplify the stages of drafting, re-drafting, illustrated text-writing and text- transposition to comic strips, which were developed during the exploration of a text book unit. The analysis of this material was carried out according to Halliday and Hasan (1989) and Ventola (1987a), for whom language is an expression of social behaviour in situational contexts, and according to Kress & van Leeuwen (1996), who point out the importance of the visual semiotic system as a resource for meaning- making. The text analysis and the reflection on the pedagogical work developed suggest the importance of offering challenging activities that are focused on a genre-based approach, as resources for learners to appropriate themselves of the target language in social contexts, while showing in their texts their social-historicalcultural experiences.

[en] ENGLISH, THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE OF NOWADAYS / [pt] INGLÊS, A LÍNGUA GLOBAL DOS DIAS ATUAIS

CARMEN DOLORES BRANCO DO REGO BARROS 06 October 2005 (has links)
[en] This research states the problems faced by mankind to communicate efficiently, a task made difficult due to the high number of languages - about 6.500 - in the world and the search of solutions to solve this issue. The strongest trend at this moment is that of accepting English as the global language, since it undeniably represents economic power and political strength. This acceptance, though, must not lead to a lack of prestige or the disappearance of other languages. One of the main goals in the learning of English must be the acquisition of tools necessary in the formation and development of speakers truly inserted in a globalized world, in which knowledge is more and more required and valued. The research also emphasizes that the learning of a foreign language must contribute to the formation of citizens aware of the value of their own languages and cultures.

[en] TRANSLATING POETRY: FACE-TO-FACE WITH HILDA HILST AND ADÍLIA LOPES / [pt] UM CORPO A CORPO COM A POESIA: TRADUZINDO HILDA HILST E ADÍLIA LOPES

BEATRIZ CABRAL BASTOS 08 October 2010 (has links)
[en] The objective of this dissertation is to offer English translations of poems by the Brazilian poet Hilda Hilst and the Portuguese poet Adília Lopes; and present theories and reflections on poetry and translation. The poems by Hilda Hilst are selected from a book titled Júbilo, Mémoria, Noviciado da Paixão (1974) Formal complexity, musicality and lyrical intensity are some of the most striking characteristics of these poems. They are the love poems of a woman-poet writing to her lover. To translate Adília Lopes we have chosen poems from Antologia (2002), a Brazilian edition composed of a selection from various books, and Le vitrail, La Nuit & A árvore cortada (2006). Some of the important aspects of Adília’s poetry are her melancholic humour, her expeditious rhythm and a language that is considered by many as colloquial and ordinary. Considering that a translation desires to reproduce the general effect of the original poem the translator’s reading should thus pay careful attention to its material effects such as those triggered by the presence of rhythm, sound and rhyme. The dissertation presents theoretical approaches to art and poetry that focus on the materiality of poetry (the concept of presence as developed by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht is especially relevant to this discussion). It also examines the work of three intellectuals that not only develop theories about poetry translation but are themselves also translators: Henri Meschonnic, Haroldo de Campos and Paulo Henriques Britto. After establishing a theoretical and practical basis for the translation of poetry, chapters 3 and 4 present the translations themselves. Each poem is followed by a commentary in which the difficulties and choices of translation are discussed.

[en] ENGLISH HAS BEEN CHASING ME: IDENTITY POSITIONING OF ADULT LEARNERS OF ENGLISH IN NARRATIVES EMERGING FROM RESEARCH INTERVIEWS / [pt] O INGLÊS VEIO ME PERSEGUINDO: POSICIONAMENTOS IDENTITÁRIOS DE ADULTOS APRENDIZES DE INGLÊS EM NARRATIVAS EMERGENTES EM ENTREVISTAS DE PESQUISA

DANILO GARRIDO 27 May 2020 (has links)
[en] This study focuses on understanding how three adult English learners, studying in a language institute in Rio de Janeiro, co-construct their identities in narratives that emerged in research interviews with the teacher-researcher. The aim is to observe: how they position and construct themselves as learners and users of English; how they feel positioned and position other participants in their stories and how they position the teacher, the school and other students. The research conceptualizes the field of Applied Linguistics as a way of creating intelligibilities in pedagogical contexts. Adopting a post-structuralist view of identity, the stories told are considered opportunities for identity construction. The research methodology is qualitative and interpretive; the transcribed data consist of three thirty-minute autobiographical interviews. We infer from the first interview that the learner identifies herself as someone who fears English, but who associates her sense of achievement and empowerment to developing a good command of the language. The second interview points to the ambiguities of an individual positioned between the contradictions of being chased by English and a criticism of what it means, in his opinion, to know English in Brazil. In the third interview, English is strongly idealized in the experience of a learner who positions herself between the feelings of enchantment and deference towards the language. Finally, this dissertation highlights the fact that identity positionings of English learners are of great relevance for enhancing the field s understandings of language teaching and learning processes.

[pt] AVALIAÇÕES E CRENÇAS EM UMA SALA DE AULA DE INGLÊS PARA FINS ESPECÍFICOS SOB O PRISMA SOCIOCULTURAL E SOCIOSSEMIÓTICO / [en] EVALUATIONS AND BELIEFS IN AN ESP CLASSROOM FROM A SOCIOCULTURAL AND SOCIOSEMIOTIC PERSPECTIVE

MONICA DA COSTA MONTEIRO DE SOUZA 31 August 2016 (has links)
[en] This research is inserted in the area of language studies, more specifically within the field of applied linguistics (Moita Lopes, 1999, 2006, 2013), and aims to seek understandings of how learners beliefs (Kalaja and Barcelos, 2003, 2013; Barcelos, 2006, 2007) may be related to their interpretations and evaluations (Martin and Rose, 2003; Martin and White, 2005) of aspects concerning the teaching-learning process in an ESP classroom, conceived in line with the Post-method Pedagogy (Kumaravadivelu, 1994, 2001, 2003, 2006). In order to do that, a total of ten students of a pharmacy technician course at the Instituto Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ) participated in this research. The data, which include their written and oral discursive-reflexive productions, were built from the utilization of learning instruments (LI), term used in reference to our pedagogical material and defined, in the scope of this research, as a set of sequential tasks related to the use of authentic text(s) and organized in line with the scaffolding principle in order to mediate the process of knowledge construction. Therefore, although these LI do not integrate the data analysis, they act as scaffolds in the process of data construction as they provide prompts that arise from their use in our everyday classroom practice, where this investigation is carried out. The theoretical framework relates a theory of learning and a theory of language, respectively: the social construction of knowledge, according to the Sociocultural Theory (Vygotsky, 1962[1994], 1978; Donato, 2000; Pollard, 2001; Mercer and Littleton, 2007), and language as a social semiotic phenomenon, following the Systemic-functional Linguistics perspective (Halliday and Hasan, 1989; Halliday, 1994; Halliday and Matthiessen 2013). Guided by this theoretical background, as well as by the Constructivism paradigm (Lincoln and Guba, 2006; Edge and Richards, 1998) interfaced with a qualitative and interpretivist approach (Erickson, 1986), this thesis presents results that suggest that the students, resorting to the Appraisal System (Martin and Rose, 2003; Martin and White, 2005) in the domain of Attitude, and its subdomains of Affect, Judgment and Appreciation, discursively construct beliefs about teaching and learning, about language, about individual identity and about cultural identity. That is, students seem to be organizing their understandings of the teaching-learning process from four interrelated meaning axes: (i) the teaching-learning process, (ii) the language to be learned, (iii) their individual identities and (iv) sociocultural identities.

CARLA CRISTINA DE SOUZA 05 July 2019 (has links)
[en] The aim of this study is to investigate the identity (re) constructions of a student-teacher in the practicum in the community of practice of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) that I belong to as part of the search for understandings about our context. In order to accomplish such objective, data generated throughout the semester the student-teacher shared with us encompass oral and written participations in which the identities were analysed and they seemed to emerge from the choices in language to interpret what she was living during the practicum. This interpretative-qualitative research (ERICKSON, 1986; DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006) is in the area of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006; 2013) and it is aligned with social constructionist theories of identity (MOITA LOPES, 2003; BUCHOLTZ; HALL, 2003, 2005), beliefs (BARCELOS, 2006) and emotions (BARCELOS, 2012; ZEMBYLAS, 2004). It is also in interface with the principles of Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1994; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014) and the Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; VIAN JR, 2009). Based on this theoretical framework, the analysis and discussions suggest that there are new constructions and significant reformulations in the student-teacher s identities, which emerge discursively, mainly within the domain of affect. In addition, it is possible to interpret that the practicum and the experiences and interactions in our community of practice of ESP were essential in her (re) constructions, especially as a teacher, and they include interconnected identities, beliefs and emotions. The process of questioning, analysing and reflecting on these identities and their complex relation to beliefs and emotions has contributed to the development of understandings for our community of practice. It also fostered opportunities for mutual learning and the curiosity for other inquiries that can motivate us to continue the constant research about this context in a more dynamic and inclusive way.

EVELLYN DORDRON AZEVEDO 08 August 2013 (has links)
[en] The development of the current research aims at searching for understandings about the production, especially in the oral modality, of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). After perceiving myself as having issues related to my social identities as well as to how I could be perceived by other individuals when using such foreign language, a semi-structured conversation-interview was arranged with two other participating EFL teachers. Through an interpretativist qualitative approach towards the generated data, it was possible to realize that the two participant teachers suffered from tensions similar to mine. The analysis of the discourse generated through the conversation-interviews focused on the teachers’ beliefs about the role of English, as a native and a foreign language, within contemporary social contexts and on personal professional identity issues. The second phase of this work, guided by the principles of Exploratory Practice and of Reflective Practice, led us to other conversation-interviews with the same participant teachers, separately. We reflected upon our perceptions and beliefs expressed during the first phase, besides dealing with our positioning at that moment. By connecting the insights obtained during the two research phases, I could understand the complexity of the issues raised and the changeability of our identities and beliefs according to the situations we experience and the contexts we are part of. However, some ideas are deeply ingrained in our minds, resulting in tensions that lead us to inhabit a middle-place of perspectives.
