[en] Recent studies propose a facilitative role for L1 in the process of L2 learning (Upton e Thompson, 2001; Jarvis, 2001; Silva, 2003; Zuchelli, 2003), specifically in the process of L2 writing (Salies, 1995; Victori, 1999; Wen e Wang, 2002; Glopper, Stevenson e van Gelderen, 2003). The purpose of this work is to investigate the role of L1 in the development of L2 writing, by means of an exploratory research of the perceptions and actions observed in class and in the learners` private writing processes. This research is a case study of a group of doctorate students from technological areas, learning English for academic writing. The data are obtained from four methodological tools: participant observation with transcriptions, interviews, retrospective protocols and questionnaires with open-ended and closed questions. They are triangulated to validate possible conclusions in relation to the role of L1. The possible pedagogic applications of L1 in the formal instruction of L2 writing are discussed.

[en] BELIEFS ABOUT TRANSLATION TEACHING AND LEARNING: A REFLECTION BASED UPON TRANSLATION STUDIES AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS / [pt] CRENÇAS SOBRE ENSINO E APRENDIZAGEM DE TRADUÇÃO: UMA REFLEXÃO BASEADA NOS ESTUDOS DA TRADUÇÃO E NA LINGUÍSTICA APLICADA

FABIOLA ALICE ALVES ROCHA DOS REIS 31 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The amount of existing translator-training courses has increased dramatically over the years due to the rising number of translation commissions and new translation modalities. However, not until the last few years have the number of studies specifically dedicated to Translation pedagogy risen as well. This qualitative research investigates the beliefs about translation teaching and learning from two small groups of interviewees: beginner students of Translation, with no professional experience in the area, and recently graduated students, who have already started translating professionally. All of them have taken the Translation graduation programme at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-Rio). The analysis is based on the academic literature from the Translation Studies field, in addition to the research about the foreign language classroom coming from the Applied Linguistics field. Conclusions highlight beliefs that show how important translation theory apllied to practice is, how important the professor is and how important it is to have a pedagogical practice that reflects the job market.

[en] REFRAMING FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY THROUGH BELIEFS: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY / [pt] RESSIGNIFICANDO A ANSIEDADE NA APRENDIZAGEM E USO DE LÍNGUAS ESTRANGEIRAS ATRAVÉS DAS CRENÇAS: UM ESTUDO EXPLORATÓRIO

FERNANDA VIEIRA DA ROCHA SILVEIRA 29 January 2013 (has links)
[en] The objective of this thesis is to present and discuss the reframing of foreign language anxiety which was observed to happen during a reflective journey developed throughout twelve exploratory sessions that were held between April and September in 2010. During the meetings, in which Lea, Mila and I participated, we sought to (re)construct our understandings of the puzzles that involved the participants’ anxiety in situations of learning and using the foreign languages. We became aware of the participants’ current beliefs in order to relate them to the anxiety construct. Taking Exploratory Practice (ALLWRIGHT, 1991, 2009) as the philosophical basis, the theoretical architecture of the research illustrates its multifaceted feature, as it is based on the studies regarding anxiety, presenting its neural bases (DAMASIO, 2004; LEDOUX, 2004; BISHOP, 2007), as well as its social bias related to foreign language learning and use (BROWN, 1973; KLEINMANN, 1977; GUIORA, 1983; HORWITZ et al. 1986; EHRMAN, 1996; MACINTYRE, 1999; YOUNG, 1999; GREGERSEN, 2003, 2005; KONDO e YING-LING, 2004; MILLS ET AL. 2006; HORWITZ, 2008, MARK, 2011) The study is also based on the studies of emotions (LUPTON, 1994; DAMASIO, 2004), beliefs (BARCELOS, 1995, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2010), of identity construction (BUCHOLTZ e HALL, 2005) referring to foreign language learning and use, and of Appraisal Theory (MARTIN 2001, 2006; MARTIN e WHITE, 2005) as the analytical tool for the evaluations which have emerged during the reflective process. Fragments from the twelve exploratory sessions, as well as messages written by the focal participant, Mila, have been selected as reflective instances of perceived anxiety experienced in relation to foreign language learning and use. The micro-discursive analysis of the fragments have focused on the evaluative lexicon that relates to the subsystems of AFFECT, APPRECIATION, and JUDGEMENT, permeated by GRADUATION, all located on a continuum of positive and negative polarities. The discursive configuration of the exploratory sessions has emerged from the discussions of our beliefs, moments of identity (re)construction, among other issues, while we sought to make sense of our practices. The movement of reflecting and questioning these beliefs has contributed to the development of understandings and reframing the anxiety as perceived by the focal participant.

[en] READING AND BELIEFS: HOW DO TEACHERS UNDERSTAND THE READING PROCESS? ANSWERS FROM A SOCIOCOGNITIVE PERSPECTIVE / [pt] LEITURA: UMA CATEGORIA HÍBRIDA? PISTAS DO DISCURSO DOS PROFESSORES DA REDE PARTICULAR E PÚBLICA

MARCIA OLIVEIRA MACIEL LOPES 11 April 2007 (has links)
[en] Studies in the educational field (Kleiman, 2004; Nunes, 1997; Amorim, 1997; Soares, 1998; INAF, 2005; IBGE, 2003; Collelo, 2003; Scholze, 2004; Rojo, 2005, Morais, 2005) indicate that Brazilian students have, by and large, a low level of proficiency in reading. Research concerned about reading/literacy tends to focus on the readers´ performance, on the text itself or on the role of school without paying attention to the beliefs of those who are involved in the teaching-learning process. As it falls to school to promote literacy as decoding and literacy functionally interpreted as the capacity to use language in multiple contexts, we developed an interdisciplinary study in the area of Applied Linguistics based on sociointeractive and sociocognitive principles that allowed us to seek in collocations information to identify Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs - Lakoff, 1987) discursively projected by the teachers about the nature of the reading process. The use of questionnaires, verbal protocols and interviews made possible the discussion about how the teachers´ ICMs may influence their pedagogical practice as well as what the relationship they may have with autonomy, collaboration and social inclusion, as advocated by the PCNs.

[en] BUT WOULDN´T IT HAVE BEEN EASIER IF YOU HAD OFFERED A MODEL OF A LESSON PLAN? RETHINKING THE CONSTRUCTION OF LESSON PLANS / [pt] MAS NÃO TERIA SIDO MAIS FÁCIL SE VOCÊ TIVESSE OFERECIDO UM MODELO DE PLANO DE AULA? REPENSANDO A CONSTRUÇÃO DO PLANO DE AULA

FERNANDA RIVAS FILIPE 21 July 2009 (has links)
[en] The objective of this dissertation was to enhance my understanding about the process of construction of lesson plans and understand how teacher-learners view planning. This is the result of an exploratory practice process performed with my own group of English Language Teaching Practice in the context of a Higher Education Institute during the first bimester of the second term in 2007. In order to achieve this aim, two Potentially Exploitable Pedagogic Activities (PEPAs) were developed: a discussion held on the first day of classes about the characteristics of English teachers in the new century (registered in OHTs) and the teacher-learners’ end-of-term written report, in which they narrated or described their personal understandings of how the lesson plan construction was developed. All the generated written data were gathered and analyzed. The perception that, in order to plan lessons, teacher-learners used their belief system, at a conscious or unconscious level, led me to the construction of this practitioner research work. Oriented by the principles of Exploratory Practice, I also based my analysis on studies on teacher and learner beliefs as well as on pre-professional teacher preparation. My dissertation aimed at deepening my understanding on the nature of planning and the quality of life in my English Language Teaching Practice classroom, seeking to fill a gap in the area of preprofessional English teacher preparation on account of the scarcity of theories that derive from teacher-research of professional practices in this field.

[en] THE IMAGINATION IN HUME S MIND THEORY: AN ANALYSIS FROM TREATISE BOOK I / [pt] A IMAGINAÇÃO NA TEORIA DA MENTE SEGUNDO HUME UMA ANÁLISE A PARTIR DO LIVRO I DO TRATADO

ROBERTA LIMA SILVA BOUCHARDET 14 September 2006 (has links)
[en] This thesis is about the concept of imagination in Book I of David Hume s Treatise of Human Nature. A full understanding of this concept is of fundamental importance to the analysis of the mind model contained in Hume´s theory of human understanding, due to the central role there played by that faculty. While restricting ourselves to that text, we discuss the several senses of the term imagination, by analysing the different functions of that faculty, and by comparing it with other faculties of the mind, such as memory and reason.

[en] MOTHER AND NANNY CARE SYSTEMS IN THE CONTEMPORARY FAMILY / [pt] SISTEMAS DE CUIDADOS DE MÃES E BABÁS NA FAMÍLIA CONTEMPORÂNEA

ISABELA CRISTINA MARTINS G SENA 22 June 2020 (has links)
[pt] As transformações socioculturais no Ocidente influenciaram profundamente a família contemporânea. / [en] Sociocultural transformations in the West have profoundly influenced the contemporary family. Changes in the role of women and their shift to the professional environment meant that care provided to young children was shared by other caregivers, such as nannies. The objective of the research was to identify childcare practices and beliefs carried by mothers and nannies form nuclear families, and thus compare these findings. The qualitative study interviewed 15 pairs of mothers and nannies, with children up to three years old. The families lived in the south of Rio de Janeiro. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, containing nine questions, in addition to the five images referring to Keller s parental systems (2005). Most mothers had higher education, while nannies, incomplete elementary school to complete high school. The results showed that mothers and nannies established similar orders for the figures of parental care systems. Another finding identified 12 common categories referring to the practice of child care performed by mothers and nannies. Most caregivers reported the transmission of personal beliefs to children from interaction and care practice. The paper concluded that caregivers beliefs and practices are fundamental to early child development.

[en] ON THE ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS: THE FEATURE POINT OF VIEW OF COMPLEMENT CLAUSES AND THE MASTERING OF FALSE BELIEFS / [pt] UM PAPEL PARA A LÍNGUA NO DESENVOLVIMENTO DE HABILIDADES COGNITIVAS SUPERIORES: O TRAÇO DE PONTO DE VISTA EM ESTRUTURAS COMPLETIVAS E O DOMÍNIO DE CRENÇAS FALSAS

CLARA NOVOA GONCALVES VILLARINHO 14 August 2013 (has links)
[en] This dissertation investigates the hypothesis that acquiring knowledge concerning the syntactic feature Point-of-View (PoV) in CPs of complement clauses (CCs) subcategorized by verbs of belief is a necessary condition for children to achieve a fully developed Theory of Mind (ToM) – the ability to ascribe false beliefs (FBs) to others and to predict their reasoning and action based on it (usually achieved by 4 years of age) (cf. DE VILLIERS AND DE VILLIERS, 2009) (henceforth, PoV-FBHypothesis). In particular, this study aimed to verify the extent to which PoV-FBH can be maintained; to evaluate the possibility of incorporating a PoV feature in an on-line model of syntactic computation grounded in minimalist assumptions (Corrêa & Augusto, 2007; 2011) and to characterize the developmental course of the acquisition of knowledge concerning this feature in the light of a procedural theory of language acquisition (Corrêa, 2009). The possibility of PoV being represented as a formal feature or as a semantic feature was considered in three analyses of CCs. It is argued that no matter how this feature is characterized, the acquisition of the knowledge it represents would inevitably rely on semantic bootstrapping, which presupposes the cognitive ability of distinguishing points of view. As for the empirical investigation, 8 experiments were conducted. Experiments 1-6 aimed at assessing 3;3-3;5 year olds ability to cope with a number of the demands of the traditional FB and Memory for Complements (MC) tasks, which supports PoVFBH, such as the ability to cope with object WH, the factivity of mental verbs and factuality. The production of CCs and childrens ability to cope with a linguistic task that includes a FB situation were also investigated. In experiment 7, childrens ability to assign truth-values to CCs and for both clauses of the complex sentence was evaluated. In Experiment 8 the role of language recursion for first- and second-order FB reasoning was investigated with 6;2 year-old children. In general, the results suggested that i) childrens failure on the traditional FB and MC tasks does not necessarily mean difficulty in dealing with CCs or FBs, insofar as they do not cope with most of the demands these tasks presuppose; ii) 3 year olds correctly assign truth-values to CCs, though assigning the truth-value for the main clause (the whole sentence) independently of the truth-value of the CC is particularly costly; iii) first- and second-order FB reasoning can be undertaken on the basis of non-recursive structures, although recursive structures seem to facilitate it. In sum, both in the light of the possible developmental courses of acquisition considered here and on the basis of the results obtained, it would be hard for the PoV-FBH to be maintained, as it stands. Metacognitive abilities may be required for children to be able to ignore the truthvalue of the CC when assigning a truth-value for the complex sentence. It is argued that the possible role of CCs in the development of ToM is to provide a representation that can be used to facilitate FB reasoning, not to support it.

[en] HOW MANY THREADS TO WEAVE A REFLECTION? NARRATIVE AND ARGUMENTATION IN THE LOOM OF INTERACTION / [pt] COM QUANTOS FIOS SE TECE UMA REFLEXÃO? NARRATIVAS E ARGUMENTAÇÕES NO TEAR DA INTERAÇÃO

ISABEL CRISTINA RANGEL MORAES BEZERRA 31 August 2007 (has links)
[en] According to the Exploratory Practice Principles, for professional reflection to be meaningful, it must be deeply related to the puzzling questions formulated by those involved in the process. Therefore, this thesis makes its contribution to the area of EFL in-service teacher education as it focuses on the process of co-construction of knowledge and professional reflection developed with some colleagues in a language course where I got involved in an exploratory consultancy activity. Using the principles of Exploratory Practice to carry out this inherently discursive reflection process of making sense of life in the classroom (and outside of it) allowed us to prioritize quality of life, everybody´s involvement and union, and mutual development - even though it was possible to spot moments of conflicting meaning negotiation. I emphasize that the process of working to understand became hybrid inasmuch as the academic research side was also present and involved my colleagues as well. Hence, the discursive configuration of our reflective sessions brought about discussion of our teaching and learning beliefs, identity construction moments, just to name a few issues, while we tried to make sense of our own teaching practice. Discourse is a central issue in this thesis in the meaning negotiation processes concerning who we are, the social world where discursive practices come to be, particularly, the discursive construction of reflection. Within the format of our reflective study sessions, narratives and argumentations were woven in the loom of interaction via Reflective Activities with Exploratory Potential to work for deeper understandings of our puzzles. Thus, the micro-discursive analysis of the face- to-face interactions took these two elements to respond to the questions or puzzles that led my research-consultant look. Finally, I also want to highlight that, in this thesis, I did not only direct my attention to my colleagues´ discursive action, but also to mine, especially in the consultant role. I believe that turning the focus to my discursive action has added to the construction of a space in the epistemological field that is devoted to professional consultant reflection on his/her own professional practice.

[pt] A AUTOEFICÁCIA: FIO CONDUTOR ENTRE AS PRÁTICAS PEDAGÓGICAS E AS TECNOLOGIAS DIGITAIS / [en] SELF-EFFICACY: THE GUIDING THREAD BETWEEN PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

ELIS RENATA DE BRITTO SANTOS 19 August 2019 (has links)
[en] Digital technologies are promoting various transformations in society, but in education these tools did not re-signify pedagogical practices. This study understands digital technologies as cultural artifacts immersed in our habits, customs and beliefs. The research aims to understand the perspective of teachers on digital technologies from a dip in their pedagogical beliefs, in particular the belief of teacher computational self-efficacy. The quantitative and qualitative study was developed in two parts: interviews of 64 teachers in 8 public elementary schools of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, between 2014-2016. And in 2018 two focus groups took place in two schools selected to continue the study because teachers presented perceptions of the near-technology of cultural artifact. The results of the interviews showed that most of the teachers (63) use the technologies in the personal scope, but when we verified the school environment this group decreased to 47. And only 17 of these managed to modify their pedagogical practices using the TIC. Direct experience was the most relevant source of self-efficacy information. In the analysis of focus groups, again direct experience stands out, along with social persuasion and concern with the student (contextual variable). At the end of the study it is noticed that the teacher s computational self-efficacy does not represent a continuous trust, on the contrary it is influenced by other factors and therefore is in constant transformation. For future research, the deepening of the knowledge about the beliefs of self-efficacy with a focus on the TIC is essential, mainly, its relation with other unknowns.
