[en] VISUAL LITERACY AND THE TEACHING OF WRITING: LEARNER INTERACTION WITH MULTIMODAL TEXTS DURING WRITING TASKS IN EFL / [pt] LETRAMENTO VISUAL E ENSINO DE PRODUÇÃO DE TEXTO: O ENCONTRO DO APRENDIZ COM TEXTOS MULTIMODAIS EM ATIVIDADES DE ESCRITA EM INGLÊS - LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRAVERA LUCIA CARVALHO GRADE SELVATICI 28 September 2009 (has links)
A análise buscou
textual; (3) o conhecimento tácito do gênero textual e a influência deste e do
[en] This study analyses the written production of EFL learners with the purpose of
describing how these learners interact with multimodal texts (MT) in writing tasks
whose aims are the development of writing skills, visual literacy and genre
awareness. Three areas of research served as the basis for the study: multimodality,
multimedia learning and genre-based teaching. Studies of visual language (Kress &
Van Leeuwen, 1996; Rose, 2001) provided the elements for a model of analysis to
be used in language teaching classes. The multimedia learning theory, conceived by
Mayer (2000), grounded the examination of the verbal/visual combination in the
teaching of writing. The idea of genre as social action (Miller, 1994; Bazerman, 1997,
2005) guided the activities designed for genre awareness. The data include the texts
written by three adult learners in tasks with specific pedagogical purposes and
different types of images/MT: a magazine cover with a photograph, an advertisement
with a photograph and a textbook illustration. It also includes the recorded material of
two of the oral analyses in class and questionnaires completed by the students after
the writing task. The analysis looked for evidence in the written texts and in the
learners’ discourse concerning: (1) interaction with the image/MT: perception,
dependence and use of the represented elements, through the analysis of the topic
framework of the text (Brown & Yule, 1983) and the learners’ responses to the
questionnaires; (2) learning opportunities focusing on lexical improvement and genre
awareness; (3) tacit knowledge of the genre and its influence, as well as the
influence of the macro context on the learners’ interaction with the image/MT. Some
of the findings suggest that (1) dependence on the image/MT is closely related to the
learner’s writing ability; (2) the genre selected for the activity strongly influences the
learners’ responses and their use of the visual and verbal resources of the
image/MT, and (3) multimodal text analysis can enrich the foreign language class, motivating learners to exercise their visual literacy. The knowledge of multimodal
learning can contribute to the design of materials for the teaching of writing.

[en] In this work, the focus is primarily the interaction between readers, texts, and multiple-choice questions, and how some of the text features can be used to assess the difficulty or ease of reading comprehension skill. Thus, the proposal of this research is to suggest elements for the establishment of an analysis driven by an approach on a interactionism basis, in the Psycholinguistics field, concerned with the comprehension text skills, which bring together computational and manual analysis of the students` performances in Portuguese proficiency tests in PUC-Rio. Five multiple-choice exams applied within 2009.2 and 2011.2 were analyzed. The data show that reader get into the university with low reading skills, which sort them into the less skilled readers category.

[pt] Pesquisas na área educacional (Kleiman, 2004; Nunes,
1997; Amorim, 1997; Soares, 1998; INAF, 2005; IBGE, 2003; Collelo, 2003;
As
[en] Studies in the educational field (Kleiman, 2004; Nunes,
1997; Amorim, 1997; Soares, 1998; INAF, 2005; IBGE, 2003; Collelo, 2003;
Scholze, 2004; Rojo, 2005, Morais, 2005) indicate that Brazilian students
have, by and large, a low level of proficiency in reading. Research concerned
about reading/literacy tends to focus on the readers´ performance, on the text
itself or on the role of school without paying attention to the beliefs of those
who are involved in the teaching-learning process. As it falls to school to
promote literacy as decoding and literacy functionally interpreted as the capacity to use
language in multiple contexts, we developed an interdisciplinary study in the
area of Applied Linguistics based on sociointeractive and sociocognitive
principles that allowed us to seek in collocations information to identify
Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs - Lakoff, 1987) discursively projected by the
teachers about the nature of the reading process. The use of questionnaires, verbal
protocols and interviews made possible the discussion about how the teachers´ ICMs
may influence their pedagogical practice as well as what the relationship they
may have with autonomy, collaboration and social inclusion, as advocated by the PCNs.

[en] DIGITAL LITERACY: A STUDY ON THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS OF THE LETTERS COURSE OF UEPA / [pt] LETRAMENTO DIGITAL: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A FORMAÇÃO DE DISCENTES DO CURSO DE LETRAS DA UEPAELISA MARIA PINHEIRO DE SOUZA 21 March 2011 (has links)
[en] The advance of the information and communication technologies and the process of globalization provokes a reorganization in the academic spaces in order to deal with the demands of a group who experience the possibilities of digital culture. Concerning this background and reflecting about the insertion of the student in a new context of teaching, this investigation aimed to analyze the relation between digital literacy and students’ formation. It was a study of an exploratory approach, of a quantitative and qualitative type, carried out in the period of 2008 and 2009, related to the Letters Course of the Universidade do Estado do Para (UEPA), in the campi of Belem, Moju, Paragominas and Vigia. The data production included the analysis of the Pedagogical Projects of the undergraduate courses of the institution as well as the speeches of the students that answered a questionnaire, and it had as theoretical base the ideas of Pretto (2004), Tardif (2007, 2008), Moscovici (2007) and Jodelet (2001), among other authors. 150 students of the Letters Course took part of this study, 74 of them were in the first grade classes (school year of 2008) and 76 students were probably going to graduate in 2009. The results allowed to characterize the students’ profile and their familiarity with digital technologies, to identify the ideas they construct about some media and the opinion they reveal about the relation between the usage of these technologies and the formation they receive in this university. The students also indicated that although this institution records in its official documents the necessity of students being competent concerning the usage of these technologies, this is not a priority in the analyzed course, once they are only perceived as an instrument that facilitates the tasks of academic daily. The research pointed to the necessity of a wide reflection on conceptions that are the base of both the construction of this undergraduate course and the principles that guide the pedagogical practices in this formation process.

[en] STUDENTS VIEWS OF THE VALIDITY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS: PEDAGOGIC APLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS / [pt] DANDO VOZ AOS APRENDIZES SOBRE A VALIDADE DO ENSINO DE LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA NA ESCOLA PÚBLICA: APLICAÇÕES E IMPLICAÇÕES PEDAGÓGICASMARCIA MARQUES FREIRE 12 August 2003 (has links)
[pt] Vários trabalhos vêm apresentando soluções para tornar o
ensino de língua estrangeira mais eficiente. Entretanto,
No
[en] Several studies have offered solutions to improve foreign
language teaching in public schools; however, they do not
investigate students understanding of its validity or of
the adequacy of existing proposals. This study
undertakes this endeavor. It investigates students views
of the role of FL teaching in public schools, contrasts
pedagogical practices to students psychological reality,
suggests materials that are in line with such a reality, and
gathers students reactions to these materials. Conjugating
the framework of action-research, qualitative principles,
and descriptive statistics, this study analyzes
questionnaires with open and closed questions, interviews
with fifteen subjects and the reaction of students enrolled
in the sixth grade of a public school in the suburbs of Rio
de Janeiro. Results indicate that the subjects do not see
any reasonable explanation to learn a foreign language in
public schools and that they see the experience as a
sequence of non-sense exercises. However, their reaction
to materials designed in line with their socio-cultural
reality increased participation and allowed the development
of competencies that go beyond the teaching of the English
language itself. In fact, literacy development emerges as
the answer to the validity of EFL teaching in this context.

[en] FOR A DIDACTICS OF DEAF INVENTION: PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE IN THE PILOT SCHOOLS OF SIGN BILINGUAL EDUCATION IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] POR UMA DIDÁTICA DA INVENÇÃO SURDA: PRÁTICA PEDAGÓGICA NAS ESCOLAS-PILOTO DE EDUCAÇÃO BILÍNGUE NO MUNICÍPIO DO RIO DE JANEIROCRISTIANE CORREIA TAVEIRA 21 October 2014 (has links)
[en] The central concern in this thesis is in the literacy of deaf students, which led to the consideration of the constitution of thought through signs and its possible socially constructed meanings. It is focused on the attempt to fill the gap pointed by Lebedeff (2010) on which would the pedagogical practices be from the discursive need of the visual experience of deafness and to which visual literacy events these discourses refer to. The specific objectives of the research were: 1. To identify the characteristics of the pedagogical practices of the deaf instructors acting in pilot schools of bilingual education in the city of Rio de Janeiro; 2. To analyze the interrelationships between the pedagogical practices of the deaf instructors with visual literacy or the use of resources supported by images. 3. To describe the pedagogical practices negotiated with the teacher (listener) together with the deaf instructor. However, we found out that are other practices that are occurring in the face of these factors such as the strong autobiographical tendency of the deaf individuals, expressed by the construction of deaf narratives in their own language, which involves not only sign language or written language (Brazilian Portuguese). To understand the negotiations of meaning, we set out to the language of interactions, which is a key factor in understanding the communication and sociability; these are realized not only by means and media, but also mediated by interpretations, desires and conflict. Given this perspective we considered that the deaf individuals are in a process of ritual imbalance and we approached games of interaction in a Goffman language (1981, 1985, 1988, 2011). We were motivated to address this complex panorama, in research, in regular schools where successive
methodological steps were validated: 1 Knowledge of architectural, human, and technological context of the schools; 2 Presentation of bilingual education for the director and pedagogical coordinator; 3 Monitoring of resource rooms, in order the research, to document two teachers (deaf and hearing) through the records on film (movie); 4 Construction of continuing education material from the photo editing and filming for training with the deaf instructors, sign language interpreters and teachers of resources rooms; 5. Bilingual Education Annual meetings arranged for 400 to 600 participants. The research also involved some steps as: equip the rooms with resource materials relevant to deafness; continuing training for teachers, deaf instructors and deaf sign language interpreters; offer continuing education courses in sign language. Outlining three styles of curricula: a. Lecture in sign language with the more traditional use of presentation of subject or theme with incremental images; b. Computerized lesson in sign language with the use of other media like comics, cartoons, games and representations; c. Dramatized lesson in sign language with the use of scenic resources. Whereas basic didactic perspective assumes teaching-learning process in its multidimensionality, i.e. the political, human and technical aspects, as indicated by Candau (1983, 2012a), it was part of the purpose of this action-research to comprehend it along with some of the Deaf Instructors of the sign language: the lesson styles and the resources used by 12 Deaf Instructors. They are those who managed to promote sign language and deaf culture, with greater effectiveness, as the largest investment of resources in pilot schools of Bilingual Education in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The effort of analysis is justified and especially the cataloging of the artifacts found in the public municipal schools of Rio de Janeiro - core of this thesis - in which the background is nonetheless deaf narratives, but not holding on to them, but to the art of deaf individuals and some listeners in creating means, resources, pedagogical practices that create other approaches to teaching and learning towards a teaching of the deaf invention.

[pt] O design do livro é uma arte invisível? Depende do leitor.
participar do processo
de formação de escritores e leitores, compreendendo a
inserção do Design,
interferem diretamente no
leitores.
escrita. / [en] Is Book Design an invisible Art? How is the reader
considered by book
designers? These questions are the starting point for this
study, which aims at
investigating how can a designer contribute to the process
of forming new
writers and readers. Design is here approached as an
interdisciplinary vocational
area where hybrid projects occur; encompassing different
voices and identities.
We work on the assumption that book designers consider
three kinds of
clients - the author, reader and publisher - and that only
author and publisher
have traditionally interfered in the designer´s work more
directly, while the
reader exists more as a pre-conceived notion. By and
large, the reader has been
disregarded by book designers. We, then, try to propose
what we call a Design
for Reading or Reading Design. We consider theories that
deal with reception
and mediation in the reading process. We use theoretians
like Roger Chartier and
apply them to an Ethnographic exercise carried out at the
Schooling Project with
Guarani Health Agents in the Native Brazilian Villages of
Itaxi, Araponga,
Sapukai and Rio Pequeno in the Angra dos Reis and Paraty
Regions. By
observing the reading process by the Guarani Agents, we
raise questions on how
to encompass the specific profile of such a reader in the
visual project, thereby
recognizing the importance of the reader and mediation in
the Reading Design.
We also consider some aspects of literacy in order to
contribute to new reading
and writing. social processes.

[en] INFANCY, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] INFÂNCIA, LINGUAGEM E LETRAMENTO: EDUCAÇÃO INFANTIL NA REDE MUNICIPAL DE ENSINO DO RIO DE JANEIROPATRICIA CORSINO 09 December 2003 (has links)
Mikhail Bakhtin, Walter Benjamin e Lev Vygotsky.
O primeiro Capítulo discute a construção histórica e
social
da infância e aborda a situação da infância no Brasil,
apontando os desafios postos hoje aos sistemas
educacionais, no que diz respeito à Educação Infantil. O
Traz a centralidade
O terceiro Capítulo focaliza a
atendimento
da Educação Infantil, percorre a história da Educação
Infantil no município e finaliza com as questões atuais
identificadas em entrevistas e observações. / [en] This thesis is related to the research Professional
development opportunities for the personnel of early
childhood education in the state of Rio de Janeiro:
conceptions, policies and its implementations. It concerns
the fields of early childhood education, public policies,
infancy, language and literacy. Its main concern is the
understanding of the conceptions of infancy, language and
literacy that resemble to practices and speeches of the
different instances of the early childhood education in the
public Schools of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This thesis
is based on current literature concerning the history and
early education policy;on the proposition that children are
culture producers, citizens of rights and on language as a
space for social interaction, awareness and growth. Specific
bibliography references from each center of the research
outlined these principles, however it had as a main source
of ideas Mikhail Bakhtin, Walter Benjamin and Lev Vygotsky.
The first chapter discusses the history and social
construction of childhood and focuses the childhood
situation in Brazil, pointing out the educational system
challenges concerning early childhood education. The
second chapter considers the language issues related to
infancy, questioning and proposing ideas to early childhood
education. It brings up the importance of the written
language in the contemporary world, infancy and literacy,
the construction process of writing and the limits and
possibilities of children's literature. The third
chapter focuses the early childhood education in the public
schools in Rio de Janeiro: describes early childhood
education, examines its history in the city of Rio de
Janeiro and presents questions identified through
observations and interviews.

[en] LITERACY PRACTICES AND SOCIAL INCLUSION: THE CASE OF A CLASSROOM OF YOUNG ADULT EDUCATION , AT LEVEL II / [pt] PRÁTICAS DE LETRAMENTO E INCLUSÃO SOCIAL: O CASO DE UMA CLASSE DO CICLO II DE EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOSTATIANA REIS FONTES MONTEIRO 18 September 2006 (has links)
classe do Projeto Vida
Nova. Descrevemos uma intervenção nos moldes de uma
pesquisa-ação que procurou
oportunizar eventos de leitura e produção de textos. Parte-
Tendo natureza
qualitativa e longitudinal, o estudo analisa a produção
textual de quatro alunos da
turma em três momentos. O banco de dados é constituído por
notas de campo
advindas de observação participante e 25 atividades de
produção textual e leitura,
envolvendo textos opinativos e recontos.
[en] Studies that address literacy in young adult education
have neglected contexts
in which this group can already read and write, although
they do not demonstrate the
capacity to efficiently function in contexts of reading
and writing. This dissertation
fulfills this gap from the perspective of Applied
Linguistics. It describes an actionresearch
experience, describing writing and reading pedagogical
practices, in the light
of socio-activity theory, in a classroom of Young Adult
Education, at Vida Nova
Project, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The guiding principle
underlying the pedagogical
practices was that the insertion of citizens in the world
of writing allows them to
extend their worldview, empowering them as active citizens
in a predominantly
writing social space. To do so, it analyzes notes from
field research and 25 reading
and writing activities, qualitatively and across time. The
texts involve argumentative
and retelling experiences. Results indicate that leading
students toward literacy
includes a commitment to working with language and a
process of making them
subject of discourse. For this to happen, they need to
take distance from practices
that see the best text as the one that most resembles the
discourse of school books.
