[en] TODAY I AM A HEROINE BECAUSE I CAN READ IDENTITY CONSTRUCTIONS IN ADULTS AND YOUNG ADULTS EDUCATION FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF NARRATIVE AS A SOCIAL PRACTICE AND THE APPRAISAL SYSTEM / [pt] HOJE EU SOU UMA HEROÍNA PORQUE EU SEI LER: CONSTRUÇÕES IDENTITÁRIAS NA EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOS SOB A ÓTICA DA NARRATIVA COMO PRÁTICA SOCIAL E DO SISTEMA DE AVALIATIVIDADE.

JULIA RODRIGUES CHAGAS CABRAL 16 July 2019 (has links)
Além disso, as construções identitárias emergentes durante a entrevista possuem forte relação com o estigma do analfabetismo e, muitas vezes, o corroboram. / [en] Inserted in the area of Applied Linguistics, this research investigates the sociodiscursive construction of identities in the narratives of a student from the Adults and Young Adults Education Program. Considering that the participant has a late process of literacy, the main objective of the study is to understand the relationship between her identity constructions and the stigma experienced by individuals who cannot read and write in the Brazilian society. The theoretical framework combines the socio-constructionist approach of identities (MOITA LOPES, 2001, 2002, 2003, HALL 2005, BAUMAN 2005) and of discourse (MOITA LOPES, 2001, 2003) to the study of narrative as a social practice as well as to the theory of language proposed by Systemic-functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1989; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014), focusing on the Appraisal System (MARTIN and WHITE, 2005). The study was carried out during a semistructured interview recorded in audio and is aligned with the qualitative and interpretative paradigm (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006). Results suggest that although the participant points out several obstacles that prevented her from studying, she does not understand her non-schooling as a result of a historical process of violation of rights, but as a personal experience related to specific factors in her life history. In addition, identity constructions emerging during the interview are strongly related to the stigma of illiteracy, and often corroborate it. These identities sometimes point to overcoming this experience, sometimes suggest that the participant still does not see herself as a literate person. Such paradoxes are interwoven with the complex, multiple, and contradictory nature of the identity phenomenon in contemporary times.

[en] ARGUMENTATION IN HIGH SCHOOL WRITING: ANALYSIS OF ELEMENTS OF MODALITY AND EVALUATION THROUGH THE SYSTEMIC-FUNCTIONAL PERSPECTIVE / [pt] ARGUMENTAÇÃO EM REDAÇÕES ESCOLARES: ANÁLISE DE ELEMENTOS MODALIZADORES E AVALIATIVOS NA PERSPECTIVA SISTÊMICO-FUNCIONAL

LEONARDO MIGUEL 22 January 2015 (has links)
[en] The objective of this research is to observe argumentation in high school student written production from public schools in Rio de Janeiro through the study of lexical elements with modal function, as well as textual sequences with value of judgement. The theoretical framework was based on assumptions from: Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994), aiming at the analysis of modality (Halliday, 1994; Eggins, 2004; Thompson, 2004); and Appraisal Theory (Martin e White, 2005; Hunston e Thompson, 1999; Stubbs, 1996), especially the subsystem of Judgement, that was used to investigate the assessment that the authors assume and express through text as message. Concepts from argumentation theories (Osakabe, 1999; Possenti, 2001) substantiate the observation of the elements that influence argumentative strength in texts. Research methodology followed a qualitative approach to text analysis. The corpus selected for analysis consists of essays written by high school students, produced during classes of the discipline Textual Production. The analysis of the texts was developed according to two complementary phases: a) observation and description of the lexicogrammatical elements that helped create argumentative strategies intended by students; and b) observation, description and interpretation of argumentative sequences in text progression, on the basis of judgement identified in the essays. The considerations raised after detailed examination of the data show that the selected texts present argumentative strategies related to modal and evaluative elements, such as polarization and the use of textual sequences of judgement. Results also point to a variation in the linearity of argumentative texts and allow for reflection on pedagogical practices in relation to teaching argumentative genres in the school context.

[en] THE OHESIVE FUNCTION OF NOMINALIZATIONS IN STUDENTS’ WRITTEN PRODUCTION: A SYSTEMIC-FUNCTIONAL PERSPECTIVE / [pt] A FUNÇÃO COESIVA DAS NOMINALIZAÇÕES EM REDAÇÕES ESCOLARES NA PERSPECTIVA SISTÊMICO-FUNCIONAL

RUBIANE GUILHERME VALERIO 04 February 2014 (has links)
[en] The objective of this study is to investigate the cohesive function of nominalizations in the written production of secondary school students. For this purpose, this research is based on theoretical assumptions from Systemic- Functional Linguistics, which considers language as a socio-semiotic system, related to the situational and cultural contexts in which language is used (Halliday, 1994). The study of nominalizations can also be associated to the phenomenon of ideational grammatical metaphor, which is viewed as one of the characteristics of academic writing (Vandenbergen-Simon et al, 2003, Banks, 2003). The corpus of study consists of 45 essays of three educational institutions - federal, state and private – totalizing approximately 9800 words. The analysis was conducted in two stages: a quantitative corpus-based approach, with the support of computational tools (Scott, 2004), to calculate the frequency of nominalizations in the analyzed texts, as well as their variation of use in the texts from different schools; and a qualitative approach, which aimed at the description of the types of cohesive ties established by nominalized forms in the selected essays. Results show that students use nominalizations as a cohesive element and there is considerable variation concerning this use, according to the different schools where texts were produced. This variation makes student texts present different levels of appropriateness to the school context. More specifically, through data analysis, it was possible to identify and classify different types of cohesive ties, constituted by nominalizations, which present linguistic patterns that differ from those that were previously revealed in other cohesion studies (Halliday and Hasan, 1989, Fávero, 1991 Koch, 1993), including the realization of cohesive ties between nominalizations as the head of a noun phrase and other phrases that are lexically and semantically more complex. In addition, this study is expected to contribute not only to a more accurate description of nominalizations, but also to the teaching of writing at school level, since it briefly discusses some pedagogical implications of the cohesive function of this linguistic feature, which can lead to a greater awareness of textual standards considered adequate to genres in several pedagogical contexts.

[en] IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION OF TEACHERS ON STRIKE: A CRITICAL AND SYSTEMIC-FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF EVALUATIVE DISCOURSE IN NEWSPAPER ARTICLES / [pt] A CONSTRUÇÃO DAS IDENTIDADES DO PROFESSOR EM GREVE: UMA ANÁLISE CRÍTICA E SISTÊMICO-FUNCIONAL DO DISCURSO AVALIATIVO DE REPORTAGENS JORNALÍSTICAS

CAMILA GOMES PINTO SOBRINHO 18 December 2015 (has links)
[en] With the objective of investigating identity construction of teachers on strike through the observation of evaluative discourse in newspaper articles, this study analyses online articles, published by the newspapers O Globo and O Dia, during two periods in which the public school system of Rio de Janeiro entered on strike –from August to October, 2013 and from May to June, 2014. The investigation aims at discussing the following questions: 1) what identities of teachers on strike are constructed by the evaluative discourse of the newspaper articles? 2) how do the evaluative linguistic resources produce discourse which constructs these identities? 3) what ideological meanings are generated by the discourse of the articles analysed, suggesting relations of power and dominance involving teachers on strike? Adopting an interdisciplinary focus, the study is based on Martin s (2005) telelogical perspective of discourse genres; on the sociosemiotic approach to language proposed by Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994), particularly on the resources of Appraisal Theory as well as on the tenets of Critical Discourse Analysis (Chouliaraki and Fairclough, 1999) and on the socioconstructionist theories of identity (Moita Lopes , 2003; Hall 2005; Bauman, 2005; Duszak 2002). Results suggest the construction of multiple identities of teachers on strike, most of them negative, such as: aggressive, riotous, troublemakers, uncompromising, irresponsible and, in a positive manner, courageous. Amongst the theoretical contributions of the study, it is highlighted the rich interface between social and critical linguistic approaches which understand the linguistic phenomenon as cultural and sociohistorically situated. Regarding my teaching practice –and that of other teachers from the public school system who recognise the strike as a legitimate right –, the study provided the reflection on how educators have their identities discursively constructed by journalists in the media.

[en] STOP TAKING THE INTERNET SERIOUSLY: THE DISCURSIVE CONSTRUCTION OF POLARIZATION ON A YOUTUBE CHANNEL IN THE LIGHT OF THE APPRAISAL SYSTEM / [pt] PARE DE LEVAR A INTERNET A SÉRIO: A CONSTRUÇÃO DISCURSIVA DA POLARIZAÇÃO EM UM CANAL DO YOUTUBE À LUZ DO SISTEMA DE AVALIATIVIDADE

RODRIGO COSTA DOS SANTOS 16 August 2018 (has links)
[en] Aiming to investigate the polarization between Science and Conspiracy (BESSI et al, 2016) - an increasingly relevant issue when considering the growth of the internet as a space for collaborative learning - a qualitative-interpretative analysis (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2005) is performed on the comments section of the video Fomos à Lua? from the YouTube channel Nerdologia. To that end, a socio-semiotic perspective of language (HALLIDAY; MATHIESSEN, 2014; MARTIN, 2016) is adopted, with the theoretical contribution of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, using the Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; TAVARES, 2014; VIAN JR, 2012). In this perspective, the principles of writing-in-interaction (BULLA, 2014) are considered, understanding that computer-mediated communication (CMC) reconfigures aspects of face-to-face interaction in writing. The methodology adopted is document analysis (TAVARES, 2014), as it favors the observation of relevant factors in the maturation process of individuals and societies (APPOLINÁRIO, 2009 apud SOBRINHO, 2015). Results suggest that polarization creates Imagined Communities (ANDERSON, 2008; HARJU, 2016), human groups characterized by the lack of a criterion for their communion, which is based not necessarily on a social bond but on the belief (imaginary) of such a bond. This fragile criterion of communion may cause the members of an Imagined Community to polarize their discussions, using the resources of Engagement and Graduation (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; WHITE, 2015) to limit opposing positions and to potentiate their own. It is proposed that the use of evaluative resources demonstrates two affordances of such communities: solidarity in group maintenance and cynicism in conflict resolution. The way Imagined Communities operate highlights what appears to be the inherent conflict in the use of YouTube for scientific dissemination, since it is defined at the same time as both a collaborative on-line learning platform (FINARDI; PORCINO, 2014) and as an affinity group (BARTON; LEE, 2013).

[en] FOSTERING CRITICAL FEELING: AN INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST LOOK AT THE SOCIOCONSTRUCTION OF LANGUAGE TEACHERS SOCIAL IDENTITIES OF GENDER, RACE/ETHNICITY AND CLASS / [pt] POR UM SENTIR CRÍTICO: UM OLHAR FEMINISTA INTERSECCIONAL SOBRE A SOCIOCONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADES SOCIAIS DE GÊNERO, RAÇA/ETNIA E CLASSE DE PROFESSORAS DE LÍNGUAS

THAIS REGINA SANTOS BORGES 03 May 2018 (has links)
[en] The aim of this research is to understand the socioconstruction of the identities of three EFL teachers in relation to their intersectional crossings (Ferreira, 2012, 2015; Collins;Bilge, 2016), through a micro analysis, which makes use of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics Appraisal System (Halliday; Hasan, 1989; Halliday, 1994; Martin; White, 2005), and a macro analysis, in a process of critical reflexivity that aims at the ripening of a critical feeling (Borges, 2016), which is based on the awareness of issues related to human suffering, stigma, ideology and power relations (Foucault, 1969; Goffman, 1963; Butler, 1993). Thus, I analyze narratives of critical moments experienced by teachers and stories of agentivity in their daily pedagogical practices, under the premises of the qualitative methodology of research, especially the concept of situated knowledge (Haraway, 1988), and in alignment with intersectional feminist epistemology (Lykke, 2010). The results indicate the direct influence of social identities of gender, race/ethnicity and social class in the discursive construction of their identity practices as teachers, reinforcing the importance of understanding the identity crossings that shape us, in the world and with the world (Souza, 2011), to promote critical conscience (Freire, 1987) and the possible hegemonic struggles (Fairclough, [1992] 2001) in the setting of the foreign language classroom as a place of dissent and unlearning (hooks, 1994, 2003; Moita Lopes et al, 2006, 2013). I also stress that the contribution of this work does not lie in giving voice to these women, but rather in the chance of allowing us to listen to the representations they make (Riessman, 1993) of the classroom reality, aiming at the co-construction and re-signification of this experience so it helps develop the becoming of the critical feeling I defend in this paper.

[en] STUDENTS HELD BACK BY THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM RECONSTRUCTING SCHOOL LIFE: A STUDY ABOUT EVALUATION AND IDENTITY IN SMALL STORIES / [pt] ALUNOS EM SITUAÇÃO DE RETENÇÃO RECONSTRUINDO O COTIDIANO ESCOLAR: UM ESTUDO SOBRE AVALIAÇÃO E IDENTIDADE EM PEQUENAS HISTÓRIAS

HELOISA QUIRINO DE OLIVEIRA 18 November 2015 (has links)
[en] The majority of Brazilian public schools adopt a system which keeps students who fail at the end of the school year in the same grade. As an English language teacher in the school where this study was guided, I have been teaching a group of students who have remained in the sixth grade for three, four, or even five years. Based on this fact, my motivation to conduct this research derived from an interest in investigating: (1) how do students evaluate the context in which they find themselves? (2) which identities are constructed during the interaction among students/participants and teacher/researcher? The study is based on the sociosemiotic approach of language, as proposed by Systemic Functional Linguistics, aligned with socioconstructionist paradigms of identity which conceive it as a fluid, emerging, interactional and sociocultural phenomena. The construction of identities is observed in small stories spontaneously told during Discussion Groups carried out with the participants. Two perspectives lead the analysis of evaluative moments in the narratives: the analytical tools of the Appraisal Theory and the seminal and contemporary theoretical concepts related to narratives, which emphasize the study of evaluation in narrative discourse. Following a qualitative methodology, ten students from secondary school and EJA ( Educação de Jovens e Adultos ) were interviewed by the researcher/teacher about how they see their school practice. Stories told by the participants portray situations of everyday school life which suggest relationships of conflict among students, teachers, coordinators and principals. The coconstruction of small stories indicates strong attitudes of collective identities through which participants blame the other, constructing themselves as victims of a school environment that does not provide the necessary quality of life for an effective learning process.

[pt] METÁFORA GRAMATICAL NO ENSINO MÉDIO: A PRODUÇÃO TEXTUAL DO ALUNO EM UMA PERSPECTIVA TRANSDISCIPLINAR

JULIANA DA FONSECA HERMES VELLOSO 02 June 2017 (has links)

[pt] AVALIAÇÕES E CRENÇAS EM UMA SALA DE AULA DE INGLÊS PARA FINS ESPECÍFICOS SOB O PRISMA SOCIOCULTURAL E SOCIOSSEMIÓTICO / [en] EVALUATIONS AND BELIEFS IN AN ESP CLASSROOM FROM A SOCIOCULTURAL AND SOCIOSEMIOTIC PERSPECTIVE

MONICA DA COSTA MONTEIRO DE SOUZA 31 August 2016 (has links)
[en] This research is inserted in the area of language studies, more specifically within the field of applied linguistics (Moita Lopes, 1999, 2006, 2013), and aims to seek understandings of how learners beliefs (Kalaja and Barcelos, 2003, 2013; Barcelos, 2006, 2007) may be related to their interpretations and evaluations (Martin and Rose, 2003; Martin and White, 2005) of aspects concerning the teaching-learning process in an ESP classroom, conceived in line with the Post-method Pedagogy (Kumaravadivelu, 1994, 2001, 2003, 2006). In order to do that, a total of ten students of a pharmacy technician course at the Instituto Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ) participated in this research. The data, which include their written and oral discursive-reflexive productions, were built from the utilization of learning instruments (LI), term used in reference to our pedagogical material and defined, in the scope of this research, as a set of sequential tasks related to the use of authentic text(s) and organized in line with the scaffolding principle in order to mediate the process of knowledge construction. Therefore, although these LI do not integrate the data analysis, they act as scaffolds in the process of data construction as they provide prompts that arise from their use in our everyday classroom practice, where this investigation is carried out. The theoretical framework relates a theory of learning and a theory of language, respectively: the social construction of knowledge, according to the Sociocultural Theory (Vygotsky, 1962[1994], 1978; Donato, 2000; Pollard, 2001; Mercer and Littleton, 2007), and language as a social semiotic phenomenon, following the Systemic-functional Linguistics perspective (Halliday and Hasan, 1989; Halliday, 1994; Halliday and Matthiessen 2013). Guided by this theoretical background, as well as by the Constructivism paradigm (Lincoln and Guba, 2006; Edge and Richards, 1998) interfaced with a qualitative and interpretivist approach (Erickson, 1986), this thesis presents results that suggest that the students, resorting to the Appraisal System (Martin and Rose, 2003; Martin and White, 2005) in the domain of Attitude, and its subdomains of Affect, Judgment and Appreciation, discursively construct beliefs about teaching and learning, about language, about individual identity and about cultural identity. That is, students seem to be organizing their understandings of the teaching-learning process from four interrelated meaning axes: (i) the teaching-learning process, (ii) the language to be learned, (iii) their individual identities and (iv) sociocultural identities.

[en] This study aims at investigating the construction of the identities of an English teacher, through the manifestations of her beliefs on talks about textbooks and instructional materials. The research is based upon socioconstructionist identity theories which conceive identity construction as a fluid, multiple and fragmented phenomenon, which is generated in discourse; situated in the context and in the course of the interactions; and built in terms of similarity and difference (DUSZAK, 2002; MOITA LOPES, 2002, 2003; BAUMAN, 2005; BUCHOLTZ; HALL, 2005; HALL, 2005). The theoretical framework is also built on the sociosemiotic approach of language proposed by the Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1989, 1994) and follows a qualitative methodology of research (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2000). The work was carried out upon a case study with an English teacher during meetings held to discuss the new materials proposed for the new childrens course at a language school in Rio de Janeiro, where I was the academic coordinator in charge of the segment then. The data were analyzed under the light of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics, mainly with the analytical tools of the Appraisal Theory (MARTIN, 2000; MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; VIAN JR., 2009), and they indicate that affection, judgment and appreciation permeate the beliefs which contribute to the teachers identity processes. During these talks, this participant (co)constructed and (re)constructed her identities, reflecting how she sees herself professionally and how she engages with the other participants in the meetings, as well as with the other teachers in the institution and with the students.
