Dynamic management of spectral resources in LTE networks / Gestion dynamique des ressources spectrales dans les réseaux LTE

Adouane, Amine Mohamed 16 February 2015 (has links)
The exponential growth in the number of communications devices has set out new ambitious targets to meet the ever-increasing demand for user capacity in emerging wireless systems. However, the inherent impairments of communication channels in cellular systems pose constant challenges to meet the envisioned targets. High spectral reuse efficiency was adopted as a solution to higher data rates. Despite its benefits, high spectral reuse leads to increased interference over the network, which degrades performances of mobile users with bad channel quality. To face this added interfence, OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is used for the new 4th generation network. Thanks to its orthogonality OFDM eliminates the intra-cellular interference, but when the same resources are used in two adjacents cells, the inter-cell interference becomes severe. To get rid of the latter, several methods for Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) have been proposed. ICIC allows coordinated radio resources management between multiple cells. The eNodeBs can share resource usage information and interference levels over the X2 interface through LTE-normalized messages. Non-cooperative game theory was largely applied were eNodeBs selfishly selects resource blocks (RBs) in order to minimize interference. In this thesis, we stress on ICIC for the downlink of a cellular OFDMA system in the context of the SOAPS (Spectrum Opportunistic Access in Public Safety) project. This project focuses on the improvement of frequency resource scheduling for Broadband Services provision by PMR (Private Mobile Radio) systems using LTE technologies. We addressed this problem with four different solutions based on Non-cooperative game theory, three algorithms are devoted to RB selection in order to manage the interference, while the last one is a power control scheme with power economy and enhanced system performances

Energy-Efficient Vertical Handovers

Rodríguez Castillo, José María January 2013 (has links)
Recent studies have shown that there are currently more than 1.08 billion of Smartphones in the world, with around 89% of them used throughout the day. On average each of these users transfers more than 450 Mbytes per month via either a cellular network or a Wi-Fi network. So far it has been up to the user to decide which one of these two networks to use at each particular moment. In this master’s thesis, the potential energy savings that could be achieved by means of automating the choice of network interface are explored. This way, the user equipment itself would be able to initiate handovers from one radio access technology to another depending on each particular service and on the environmental conditions, and hence it could extend its battery life. The work has focused in energy efficient vertical handovers (VHOs) between Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and Wi-Fi networks. The rapid growth and increasing interest in LTE networks have been the main reasons why these networks have been chosen over Third Generation Mobile Networks. Nevertheless this work can be easily extended to other radio access technologies such as WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) or UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System). During the thesis project, the potential energy savings via VHOs depending on the type of service have been studied, as well as the different processes involved in a handover decision process. In order to do so, an energy consumption profile of each interface has been built, the different services have been modeled, and a heterogeneous scenario with Wi-Fi and LTE networks has been simulated. The thesis presents how these savings change within each service and with the environmental conditions (network load, interferences). The results show that large energy savings can be achieved. Nevertheless, the potential savings for each different user device can significantly differ. The VHO decision process includes two main aspects that need further study: investigating energy efficient ways of discovering accessible Wi-Fi access points and measuring the available throughput in each network at the moment of the decision. In addition, within LTE-Advanced and HetNets (Heterogeneous Networks), a lot of research regarding how LTE operators can offload traffic to smaller networks is being performed. These smaller networks consist basically of LTE micro cells and Wi-Fi. Both the energy savings and the potential energy expenses of offloading different kinds of traffic to a Wi-Fi network were also studied in this master’s thesis project, using the same approach described in the previous two paragraphs.

Ghariani, Takoua 30 September 2014 (has links)
This will surely influence upcoming networking technologies, architectures and usage practices. New approaches and methodologies are required in order to evaluate and to reduce the Carbon Footprint toward what is commonly denoted as Green Networks. Within the ICT sector, the main efforts are related to energy saving techniques. These efforts started in early stages within wireless technologies, mainly because of energy limitations on mobile devices such as mobile phones and wireless sensors. Additionally, because of health considerations, standardization bodies and government had set stringent policies and limits on electromagnetic radiation levels that can be emitted by radio stations. For these reasons, many academic and industrial research and development activities had led to a number of relatively energy efficient solutions. In this thesis, we consider energy efficiency in the context of Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks. These are composed of multi-standards wireless network solutions, with non uniform topologies and cell sizes and Multi-Modal mobile terminals able to manage simultaneously different connections. The main contributions of our studies include the proposal of new optimization solutions regarding user association and scheduling techniques at both flow and packet levels for multi-homed mobile terminals. An overall context-based solution is also proposed in order to provide end-to-end energy efficient networking solutions

Stratégies de détection MIMO d'ordre supérieur avec applications au relayage pour les réseaux 4G+ et 5G / Higher-order MIMO detection and half-duplex relay strategies for 4G+ and 5G networks

Thomas, Robin 09 December 2016 (has links)
The evolution of wireless communication networks has always been rapidly progressive partly due to the demands of today’s data hungry users. This dissertation presents two key contributions to the body of knowledge in the evolving area of physical layer 4G+/5G communication technologies, especially in the domain of Higher-order MIMO detection and half-duplex relay network design. The initial part of this research investigates the development of a higher-order MIMO detection strategy for existing and future 4G+/5G receivers, from both a theoretical and practical perspective. A novel pre-processing Block QR decomposition technique has been proposed for an LTE receiver in a single-user interference-limited scenario as well as a point-to-point scenario with the results highlighting the complexity advantages and limitations in performance. The second part of this study involves a practical feasibility study of a novel two-phase three-part-message strategy for a physical layer half-duplex relay network, which features superposition coding and interference-aware successive interference cancellation decoding. A key aim of this study was to analyze the performance of the proposed link adaptation scheme in the non-asymptotic regime (finite block-length and discrete constellation signaling), and evaluate the spectral efficiency (SE) against the theoretical assumptions of asymptotically large block-lengths. An additional SE comparison with a non-cooperative two-hop relay transmission and point-to-point transmission strategy is also presented. The resulting outcomes reveal the SE gains that can be had by exploiting physical layer cooperation between the relay and base station.

Utveckling av Androidbaserad mätapplikation för LTE-mätningar

Vesterlund, William, Ångman, Nils January 2015 (has links)
The use of mobile communication has remarkably increased during the last years. It is the usage of 2G, 3G and in particular LTE that has increased. With every year that passes the con- sumers are putting higher demands on data rate and coverage. To solve the problem with coverage the signal can be relayed and thus amplified at the receiver end. To know if it’s pos- sible to relay the signal it’s important to know what signal is received locally. The company Network Expertise has given us a problem, due to that we want to investigate two things in this thesis. 1) Which signal parameters are relevant and which signal levels are good and bad for LTE. 2) How can signal measurements be done for 2G, 3G and 4G with an Android based system. To solve the first problem, a literature study was conducted where we found information about how past measurements have been made and what is relevant when measuring an LTE signal. The second problem was solved by developing an application for Android which implements the relevant measurements that was defined in the literature study. The application and the possibilities in Android have been reviewed and compared with similar tools for signal measurements. The relevant parameters for LTE measurements are RSRP, RSRQ, EARFCN and neighboring cells RSRP, RSRQ and EARFCN. Additional relevant parameters are ECI, MCC and MNC. LTE parameters which are possible to retrieve with an Android based telephone through An- droid API are RSRP, RSRQ and ECI (with some telephone models). The telephone must also support API level 17. For 3G it’s possible to retrieve RSCP, EcNo (with some telephone mod- els) and for 2G it’s possible to retrieve RSSI. MCC and MNC are both possible to retrieve in Android. Information about neighboring cells are not available for neither of the technologies. The quality level for the LTE parameter RSRP is great above -80 dBm level, good down to -90 dBm, moderate down to -100 dBm and bad below -100 dBm. Signal level for the LTE parame- ter RSRQ is great above -10 dBm, good down to -15 dBm, moderate down to -20 dBm and bad below -20 dBm. With the available version of Android is not sufficient to do advance signal measurements.

Implementation of 3GPP LTE QPP Interleaver for SiLago

Dey, Spandan January 2019 (has links)
Modern wireless communication systems have seen an increased usage of various channel coding techniques to facilitate improved throughput and latency. Interleavers form an integral part of these coding techniques and play a critical role by making the communication more robust and resilient to noise and other interference. The ever increasing need for higher throughputs and lower latencies has made designers to pursue a more parallel design approach giving rise to parallel adaptations of these encoding/decoding techniques. A bulk of the modern telecommunication occurs over Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN), commonly referred to as cellular networks. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Long Term Evolution (LTE) develops and specifies the standards that are used in cellular communication. Their current most widely used "4G" standard employs Turbo coding techniques and a Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleaver. Silicon Large Grain Object or SiLago is a Coarse Grain Reconfigurable Fabric facilitating a modular approach towards electronics hardware development. The concept is similar to LEGO bricks, that is to have a library of hardened blocks (similar to Lego bricks) out of which systems of various types and functionalities can be built. This thesis investigates the state-of-the-art parallel interleavers and parallel interleaving techniques available for the 3GPP LTE QPP interleavers, and implements two interleaver designs, one for Radix 2 and another for Radix 4 decoding techniques. A physical synthesis is carried out in 28nm technology and the results in terms of power and area are reported.

Advanced MIMO-OFDM technique for future high speed braodband wireless communications. A study of OFDM design, using wavelet transform, fractional fourier transform, fast fourier transform, doppler effect, space-time coding for multiple input, multiple output wireless communications systems

Anoh, Kelvin O.O. January 2015 (has links)
This work concentrates on the application of diversity techniques and space time block coding for future high speed mobile wireless communications on multicarrier systems. At first, alternative multicarrier kernels robust for high speed doubly-selective fading channel are sought. They include the comparisons of discrete Fourier transform (DFT), fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) and wavelet transform (WT) multicarrier kernels. Different wavelet types, including the raised-cosine spectrum wavelets are implemented, evaluated and compared. From different wavelet families, orthogonal wavelets are isolated from detailed evaluations and comparisons as suitable for multicarrier applications. The three transforms are compared over a doubly-selective channel with the WT significantly outperforming all for high speed conditions up to 300 km/hr. Then, a new wavelet is constructed from an ideal filter approximation using established wavelet design algorithms to match any signal of interest; in this case under bandlimited criteria. The new wavelet showed better performance than other traditional orthogonal wavelets. To achieve MIMO communication, orthogonal space-time block coding, OSTBC, is evaluated next. First, the OSTBC is extended to assess the performance of the scheme over extended receiver diversity order. Again, with the extended diversity conditions, the OSTBC is implemented for a multicarrier system over a doubly-selective fading channel. The MIMO-OFDM systems (implemented using DFT and WT kernels) are evaluated for different operating frequencies, typical of LTE standard, with Doppler effects. It was found that, during high mobile speed, it is better to transmit OFDM signals using lower operating frequencies. The information theory for the 2-transmit antenna OSTBC does not support higher order implementation of multi-antenna systems, which is required for the future generation wireless communications systems. Instead of the OSTBC, the QO-STBC is usually deployed to support the design of higher order multi-antenna systems other than the 2-transmit antenna scheme. The performances of traditional QO-STBC methods are diminished by some off-diagonal (interference) terms such that the resulting system does not attain full diversity. Some methods for eliminating the interference terms have earlier been discussed. This work follows the construction of cyclic matrices with Hadamard matrix to derive QO-STBC codes construction which are N-times better than interference free QO-STBC, where N is the number of transmit antenna branches.

Practical Robust MIMO OFDM Communication System for High-Speed Mobile Communication

Grabner, Mitchell John James 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis presents the design of a communication system (PRCS) which improves on all aspects of the current state of the art 4G communication system Long Term Evolution (LTE) including peak to average power ratio (PAPR), data reliability, spectral efficiency and complexity using the most recent state of the art research in the field combined with novel implementations. This research is relevant and important to the field of electrical and communication engineering because it provides benefits to consumers in the form of more reliable data with higher speeds as well as a reduced burden on hardware original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The results presented herein show up to a 3 dB reduction in PAPR, less than 10-5 bit errors at 7.5 dB signal to noise ratio (SNR) using 4QAM, up to 3 times increased throughput in the uplink mode and 10 times reduced channel coding complexity.

Recently, the society is living amid an agglomerate of mobile devices with multiple wireless interfaces that allow mobile customers home and business solve routine problems in the shortest time and in several locations. On the other hand, the availability of various wireless access technologies such as Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) and Long Term Evolution (LTE), provide a heterogeneous scenario with several connectivity opportunities for the user of devices with multiple interfaces. Some of the current challenges in framing the so called Next Generation Networks (NGN) are the development of frameworks and mechanisms that enable both adequate support for Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) for multimedia applications, and assurance equity among throughputs of different applications in a heterogeneous environment. This dissertation proposes a framework for provisioning of QoS and QoE in heterogeneous wireless networks consisting of WiMAX and Wi-Fi networks. Specifically, our solution provides static mapping of QoS between classes of service WiMAX and access categories Wi-Fi. In addition, our proposal also combines features of equity among throughputs with the mapping solution in order to achieve a good tradeoff for both, for the network operator and for the user, through a new methodology for collection and calculation of aggregate throughput and algorithm for Vertical Handover Decision (VHD). The quantitative evaluation of the proposal was carried out using simulation models in Network Simulator (NS-2). The performance results demonstrate the efficiency of the framework in terms of QoS (throughput, average throughput and delay) and QoE (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, Structural Similarity Index and Video Quality Metric) metrics.

Le rôle des collisions avec l'hydrogène dans la determination hors-ETL de l'abondance du fer dans les étoiles froides / Non-LTE iron abundance determination in cool stars : the role of hydrogen collisions

Ezzeddine, Rana 07 December 2015 (has links)
Determination of high precision abundances has and will always be an important goal of all spectroscopic studies. The use of LTE assumption in spectroscopic analyses has been extensively shown in the literature to badly affect the determined abundances and stellar parameters, especially in metal-poor and giant stars which can be subject to large non-LTE effects. Non-LTE modeling of stellar spectra is therefore essential to accurately reproduce the observations and derive stellar abundances. Non-LTE calculations require the inputof a bulk of atomic data, which may be subject to uncertainties. In cool stars, hydrogen collisional rates are a major source of uncertainty, which are often approximated using a classical recipe (the Drawin approximation) for allowed bound-bound, and ionization transitions only. This approximation has been shown to overestimate the collisional rates, and does not reproduce the correct behavior with energies. We demonstrate in this dissertation the inability of the Drawin approximation to describe the hydrogen collisional rates. We introduce a new method to estimate these rates based on fitting the existing quantum rates of other elements. We show that this quantum fitting method (QFM) performs well in non-LTE calculations when detailed quantum rates are not available. We test the newly proposed method, with a complete iron model atom that we developed, on a reference set of stars from the Gaia-ESO survey. Starting from well determined non-spectroscopic atmospheric parameters, we determine 1D, non-LTE, and LTE iron abundances for this set ofstars. Our non-LTE results show excellent agreement between Fe I and Fe II abundances and small line-by-line dispersions, especially for the metal-poor stars. Our method is validated upon comparison with new preliminary Fe I+H quantum calculations, whose fits show an excellent agreement with ours.
