To undertake actions in favor of the realization of rights is imperative to understand in which field the existing societarian project is consolidated. It happens because the Social Work is a profession which is intrinsically related with the historical and structural determinants and with the economicpolitical and social conjuncture, because it operates in the contradictions arising from the social relations resultants from the production and reproduction of the capital. Within the scenario this research proposes to reflect the professional practice of the social assistance, having as an objective to deepen the knowledge about the social study, in order to elucidate and to investigate if this methodological process can be considered as a means for the enabling rights of the subjects in which the Social Work operates. And if it is right, to discuss the conditions for this to become effective. The research was conducted in the Secretaria Executiva Psicossocial (SEPS), a unit linked to the Ministério Público do Distrito Federal e Territórios (MPDFT) which has as attribution to assist the prosecutors in their decisions in the court processes. The methodology used for the reasons of this research was based in the dialectical critical paradigm priorizing qualitative approach. Aiming to deepen knowledge about social study, semi-structured interviews were performed with the social assistances working in the SEPS, the documental analysis of the technical reports produced by these professionals and semi -structured interviews with the prosecutors. “…It’s not only about giving children a voice”- social workers accounts of child participation in social investigations

Mönefors Berntell, Agneta January 2016 (has links)
There is a consensus in Sweden that children are right-bearers and shall participate in matters that affect them among legislators, the government’s instructions by Barns Behov I Centrum (BBIC) (Child’s needs in focus) and among social workers. Despite this, previous research shows that children’s participation in social investigations is limited. The aim of this study is to analyse and interpret how social worker’s describe and understand children’s participation in their daily work at a social welfare unit. It is their perception of child participation that is studied. The data consists of interviews with nine social workers investigating children of 0-12 years of age at three social welfare units in municipalities’ in the outskirts of Stockholm. The theoretical perspective of this study is childhood sociology. The social workers in this study regard children as competent enough to receive information as well as capable contributors to the investigations. Participation was viewed as a cornerstone in their work with children. Children were described as capable of communicating information and their perspective on their situation through speech, behaviour or play indicating that all children can contribute despite age. But oral communication dominates and has a higher value, showing that age and maturity has an impact on children’s participation. Restrictions by guardians, time-restraint and heavy workloads also limited children’s participation during the investigation.

Children's voice and participation in social welfare investigations

Mönefors Berntell, Agneta January 2015 (has links)
There is a principal consent both in the convention on the rights of the child, the Swedish social service act and in “Barns behov i centrum” (BBiC, similar to the British “Looking after children”, LAC) that children should participate and have an impact on matters that affect them in relation to their age and maturity. This thesis focus on how children’s voices are recorded in social welfare files and how their participation in the investigation is constructed. I have read the interviews and the social reports of ten children, conducted by social workers in a municipality in the outskirts of Stockholm. The children’s voices in the files are a secondary voice, they are the social worker’s interpretation of the interviews with the children. I have used thematic analysis in order to answer my research questions. The result shows that all children had been able to talk to the social worker and nearly all of them were informed about why there was an investigation. The children’s stories were valued as true by the social workers and they were referred as information givers. Most of them were only interviewed orally, without support from child adaptive methods. They had very limited impact on how the investigation were conducted, how their information would be used and on the choice of intervention.

The result shows that there are key aspects that play an important role in professional communication with children, one aspect was the importance of the circumstances and the environment of the conversation. The study shows that the social secretary uses different methods and tools in the implementation of child talks. The result identifies obstacles and opportunities in communication with children, an obstacle raised by social workers was situations where the child did not want to participate and an opportunity is a good conversation environment. Furthermore, the results of the study are discussed based on previous research and theoretical reference framework, which largely confirms what the social worker emphasized for the outcome of the study.

Guidelines for the improvement of pre-sentence evaluation committees

Gerrand, Daniel J. 06 September 2012 (has links)
M.A. / The pre-sentence evaluation committee was an innovation of the 1980's. It is a multidisciplinary team constituted primarily to assist probation officers with their cases in making relevant recommendations on offenders to the court. The concept of the pre-sentence evaluation committee survives in the provisions of the Probation Services Act No. 116 of 1991, and the Strategic Management Plan of the Department of Welfare and Population Development, Gauteng Province. In effect, it has been discontinued in almost all of the decentralized offices of the Department of Welfare and Population Development within the Gauteng Province. The objective of this study is to determine if the pm-sentence is still relevant to probation officers who are the major stakeholders of the committee and If so what form should the committee assume to meet the needs of probation officers. It therefore falls within the program evaluation genre in terms of its purpose. The study entails a survey of fifteen social workers in the employ of the Department of Welfare and Population Development. The majority of these are dedicated probation officers. Data is captured in using a standardized open-ended interview schedule. A qualitative research design isfollowed using a framework based on the work of Strauss and Corbin (1990). Use is made of the NUD.IST computer based program to deal with the transcripts of the fifteen interviews with departmental social workers. The program assists with the treatment of the data and the establishment of hierarchies of concepts developed during the application of Strauss and Corbin's framework. Conclusions of the study are that probation officers In general recognize that the pre-sentence evaluation committee continues to have relevance in court work. That it has greatest relevance for inexperienced social workers and workers confronted with difficult cases. On the basis of the research recommendations are made for a flexible application of the concept of the pre-sentence evaluation committee and that there are additional alternatives which can be considered in addition to the pre-sentence evaluation committee.

“Women, you know that women they are very easy to deceive … ” : understandings of women's role in witchcraft-related violence among community groups and social workers in southern Nigeria and handling of such violence.

Mark, Faith January 2017 (has links)
This study aims to explore how social workers and community groups in southern Nigeria understand and interpret women's roles in witchcraft related violence and the implications those views have on the handling of such violence. This topic is of relevance for social work since knowledge about this problem can increase the awareness of violence and its implications when meeting clients that are exposed to it.     The study was conducted with an ethnographical approach using a combination of participant observations, semi structured and un-structured forms of interviews’ and seven focus group discussions. Four of the focus groups consisted of social workers who work with empowerment and advocacy for women and girls in Edo-state. The other three were made up of locals in a suburb of Benin City. In this study, I used Clifford Geertz (1973) interpretive anthropology as a comprehensive theory in analysing the results and the theoretical concepts from Mann Huyng Hurs (2006) theory on stages of Empowerment; an existing social disturbance, Conscientizing, Mobilizing, Maximizing and creating a new order. The results of this study show that understandings and interpretations of women’s role in witchcraft-related violence by the participating social workers and community members influences their views on what is to be considered violence and who are to be considered victims. Their views also influence their containment strategies and approaches on how to handle this violence.

Att vara kvar när alla andra flyr : En intervjustudie med erfarna socialsekreterare om copingstrategier och organisatoriska villkor

Viger, Fanny, Haglund, Marcus January 2017 (has links)
Staying when everyone else flees – an interview study with experienced social workers on coping strategies and organizational conditions Earlier studies in the field have described a complicated situation with high turnover and recruitment problems within the Swedish social services. The aim of this study was to investigate and get an understanding of how social workers within child protective services cope with challenges in their work and what organizational factors at their place of work that affects their intention to stay. Six social workers with a minimum of three years of experience were interviewed. The empirical material was analysed using a hermeneutic approach with coping and sense of coherence as a theoretical ground. The most important factors for the social workers’ intention to stay were their own experience as a way to cope with the workload, support from their colleagues and from their superiors. The discussion highlights the importance of experience in coping with workload as well as for supporting newly educated social workers.

Enhancing social capital in communities to manage HIV and AIDS : the role of social workers in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities

Sesane, Malebo Phillipine January 2014 (has links)
The goal of this study was to explore and describe roles of social workers in enhancing social capital in communities to manage HIV and Aids in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities. In order to achieve this goal, a qualitative research approach was adopted to explore and describe the views of social workers and community members. The research deals with the roles of social workers in enhancing social capital in the communities of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities in order to manage HIV and Aids. To this end, the collective case study design guided the study. Focus group interviews were used as the data collection method for this study, and two distinct interview schedules developed and utilised for social workers and community members, respectively. From the raw data, the researcher implemented the qualitative data analysis process of Creswell (1998) to extrapolate themes and sub-themes through thematic analysis. The trustworthiness of the data interpretation was confirmed through reflexibility, voluntary participation and the guarantee of anonymity. An analysis of three different sources of data, namely the literature review and focus group interviews with social workers and community members was undertaken to answer the following two research questions, namely: (1) Based on the views of social workers, what are the roles of social workers in enhancing social capital in the communities to manage HIV and Aids in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities?; and (2) Based on the views of community members, what are the roles of social workers in enhancing social capital in the communities to manage HIV and Aids in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities? The key finding of the study was that, social workers have various roles to play in enhancing the social capital of communities to manage HIV and Aids in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities. More specifically, it was found that: (1) Social workers provide critical services in the identification and assessment of situations in which relationships between people and social institutions need to be initiated, enhanced, restored, protected and terminated; (2) Social workers promote social change, problem solving in human relationships, and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance their well-being; (3) Social workers provide essential leadership and support in mobilising community response to HIV and Aids; (4) Social workers strengthen bonding, bridging or linking relationships that are critical for building family and community capacity, connecting families to services and supports, improving safety nets for prevention and early intervention, and for empowering family and community members; (5) Social workers develop special kinds of local communities that promote people’s health and well-being and, at the same time, contribute to sustainable, integrated social and economic development; and finally, Social workers play a critical role in combating stigma related to HIV and Aids through education and raising awareness. In strengthening the roles of social workers to enhance social capital in the communities, in order to manage HIV and Aids in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan, the following recommendations are made: to ensure that relevant international, regional, national, provincial and district level policies, guidelines and other relevant statutes are part of social workers’ workplace orientation programme and continuous professional training; to emphasise the social capital concept in the tertiary education curriculum of social workers; to ensure that social workers are urgently and continuously strengthened and sustained during HIV prevention efforts; to ensure that social workers transition from their work in needs orientation to human rights affirmation; to encourage the NGO sector to include a developmental social work focus in their HIV and Aids work with communities; and to ensure that social workers work on coordination and open discussions of interpersonal networks between the government and NGOs. These recommendations are consolidated into a document entitled ‘Guidelines for social workers to building social capital in communities towards the management of HIV and Aids in the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipalities’. Future research could focus on the following: (1) Extending the research study to other Metropolitan Municipalities in the Gauteng province in order to compare if social workers in other municipalities identifies with the findings of the current study and to expand the recommendations originating from this study on a provincial level; (2) Investigating social capital as a community development tool for social work in the context of HIV prevention and management in the South African context further; (3) Guiding social workers on the role they could play in the efforts to prevent and manage HIV infection at community level; and (4) Implementing the guidelines originating from this study in practice and determining their strengths and limitations. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / am2014 / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted
