“Show me your playlist and I tell you who you are” : An investigation of the social psychological foundation of musical playlists

In the age of social networking and music streaming, playlists are a common tool for organizing,sharing or exchanging music in the digital realm. Most research, however, emphasizes mainlypolitical, legal, and ethical constraints of music sharing practices yet, neglects their social impact.Thus, this paper investigates the social-psychological foundation of the playlist and analyses itsfunctionality in establishing social relations and communication. Following the theories of Cooley,Mead, Simmel and Solomon, I conducted and analysed interviews with young Swedish men andwomen, in which they talked about their experiences and attitudes towards playlists. Moreover, allparticipants compiled their own personal playlist, based on certain personality traits, which wereaimed to be recognized by the others during the focus group discussion. The analysis of the datayields the following conclusions: The playlist is a social object, facilitating new forms ofcommunication. The social nature of the playlist is based on the transformation from objective- intosubjective culture. By internalizing new technologies, such as the playlist, objects gain social value,thus mere musical content becomes a social form. It is through sharing and exchanging musicalcompilations that the playlist, as a social form, serves as a vehicle or medium, facilitating newforms of sociation and communication. The communicative function of the playlist is due to itsconstruction through emotions as uniquely subjective judgements, based on the “I” as an emotionalself-feeling. Thus, musical compilations take part in the self-construction process, and can serve asa tool for the symbolic expression of the self.Moreover, the analysis points out that there are differences in how well certain parts of the self canbe communicated by a playlist. Emotional expressions of the self are translated into particularuniversal music patterns most successfully. Furthermore, the analysis shows that some people liketo browse through the playlists of others and judge them thereupon, which results in some type ofmusical voyeurism, termed “playlistism.” In conclusion, I argue that the musical playlist is both,socially implicated and socially implicating, and facilitates communication not only betweenSwedish youth but across cultural boarders.

Since a few years back television has been on a verge of an enormous digital change. Web-TV is now growing at an incredible rate and is said to completely change the way we consume TV. The purpose of this essay is to determine and gain an understanding of how representatives of the broadcast industry looks at the phenomenon of web-TV and especially the different kinds of online video services and how they believe this will affect the television. Methods used are qualitative interviews which we compared with previous studies on the subject and acknowledged communication theories. The respondents were people with good insight and understanding of the media and TV industry. Some of the conclusions made are that the representatives believe television needs to be redefined and that there has been a shift in power in favor for the viewers. We have also seen that the representatives believe TV consumption now is more flexible where it’s no longer bound to a specific time and place.

A Study on Digitalization and Competitiveness of Far Sea Fishery Industry: A Case of Purse Seiners Fleet of F Fishery Group

Although the government has actively advocating the concept of the ocean-state country promoting sustainable development of fishery resource, there still remains a lack of adequate fishery policy and human resource training program in coherence with the fishery industry. Taiwan¡¦s far sea fishery industry is the earliest pioneer expanding business scope globally. As a result, it shall have the keenest tendency toward digitization. On the contrary, no total-solution for digitization has been ever offered to the fishery industry. This is due to that MIS experts have no knowledge about fishery while fishery experts have no knowledge about Management Information System (MIS). This gap eventually leads to the failure in technology adaptation of fishery industry. This research is based on a strategic analysis study aiming at competitiveness of far sea fishery after digitalization. Six organization competencies are designed and constructed as the framework of the research, relevant information system are later incorporated into the strategic structure. In this industrial scale and case research, six organization competencies, which are competencies in strategy, information, logistic, quality control, and global logistic. It is hoped that the utilization of information system on fishing vessel can help improve the corporate competitiveness by grasping the market changes in time, enhancing corporate effectiveness, and maintaining stable productivity. Furthermore, four recommendations are generated for Company F¡¦s digitalization strategy: 1. Gradually adopt the e-information system according to the corporate digitalization plan to minimize the operation cost. 2. Using the employee needs within the company as the guideline, develop rapid response system and integrate the operation system in order to improve its competitiveness. 3. Fully utilize the science and technology to offset problems caused by lack of manpower. 4. A CEO¡¦s commitment, high-level executives¡¦ insistence, and general employees¡¦ common views are all definitely needed and shared in order to implementing the digitalization strategy. Last, this research proposed the concept of e-fisherman whose intangible assets are to apply the technology when fishing instead of fishing without technological support. An e-revolution definitely needs to be carried out in order to sustain the business and keep competitiveness.

Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) fördert an der Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig seit 2007 ein Pilotprojekt zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte, bei dem die Vorlesungsverzeichnisse als serielle Quellen inhaltlich und datenbanktechnisch erschlossen werden („Vorlesungsverzeichnisse als Quellen disziplinär organisierter Wissenschaft. Die Ausdifferenzierung wissenschaftlicher Fächer an der Universität Leipzig 1814/15– 1914“). Die Leipziger Vorlesungsverzeichnisse wurden vor Jahren gescannt und sind über einen sogenannten IPAC als Bild abrufbar. Nun werden sie in eine Datenbank eingegeben. Mitarbeiter des von Prof. Dr. Ulrich Johannes Schneider geleiteten Projekts sind Frank Fischer und Tobias Grave, unterstützt von drei Hilfskräften und externen Partnern für die Datenbanktechnik.

This thesis will analyze the social life in metropolises in terms of technological changes and social transformations with their effects on everyday practices especially musical genres. This thesis also aims to understand the relationships between techno-culture, contemporary musical genres and clubbing as a subculture that reflects the aspects of techno-culture with its life style especially musical tendencies. The thesis will also make some illustrations of the features and life style of clubbers in Turkey. So, this study is composed of both theoretical and empirical structures. In order to make a comparative study, clubbing will be compared with the other subcultures appeared after the Second World War like Jazz, Punk or Acid House. The aspects of everyday life like drug use, consumption or appearance of those subcultures will be the base of this comparison.

Meta-organizational Consensus : A case study of decision-making in a meta-organization in Swedish healthcare

Purpose – In the context of digitalization in healthcare and Swedish demographical development, the importance of meta-organizational decision-making can be discussed. This paper studies the decision-making processes in a national meta-organization which members face the current challenges of Swedish public healthcare. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute to meta-organizational decision-making. Design/methodology/approach – This paper has a qualitative approach and is based in abductive reasoning towards theory and research. Data has been collected from interviews, podcasts and documents that describe the decision-making process in the meta-organization. Findings – Our empirical findings show that the decision-making process of the metaorganization is complex, time-consuming and aims to provide consensus before its members' decisions. To reach consensus, the meta-organization uses various coordination and collaboration activities and groupings such as networks, workshops, expert panels, and conferences. Practical implications – Both informal and formal activities and groupings are considered important in reaching consensus. Furthermore, both formal and informal groupings help to overcome interest-conflicts such as differing priorities. It is also important the metaorganization provide an arena where all members feel that the can contribute and influence the decision-making process, regardless of size or resources. Originality/value – Because of dichotomic views on the importance of consensus in decision-making in meta-organization, and from calls for future research, this study can be argued to be of interest. Furthermore, digitalization and demographical development suggest that the healthcare sector is in current and significant change. Get digitalized or die trying : A qualitative study of how digitalization affect Swedish SMEs with Chinese business partners

Purpose: The aim of the study is to explore how the digitalization has affected international business relations, with a focus on Swedish and Chinese relationships. This will be studied through a qualitative study of Swedish SMEs with Chinese partners within the manufacturing industry, but also through interviews with Business Sweden and Swedish Chamber of Commerce for an objective approach. Research Questions: The main research question is: How does digitalization affect Swedish SMEs business relations with Chinese partners in the manufacturing industry? The subquestion is: Which positive and negative aspects does the digitalization bring? Methodology: This thesis is a qualitative study conducted with an abductive approach. A multi-case study design was applied, researching four Swedish SMEs and two objective organizations. Conclusions: After accomplishing this research, we were able to draw the conclusion that Swedish SMEs with Chinese business partners are affected by the digitalization on many levels. Areas mainly affected by the digital development are the communication methods and work tasks. The positive outcomes are opportunities to save money and time, as well as maintaining frequent communication which can increase trustworthiness. The negative outcomes are the decreased personal interactions and the risk of sharing sensitive information, because of the fact that information is stored on digital devices.

Against modern football or a part of it? : A study of how Swedish football clubs work with their media channels and how it affects the professional role of sport´s journalists

Previous studies have shown that football is getting more commercial and together with increased digital possibilities football clubs can bypass traditional media and attract audience via their own media channels. With strategic communication and agenda setting as a theoretic background I wanted to investigate how Swedish top football clubs used their own media channels, what affected the media strategy of the big clubs in Sweden and how sports journalists perceived the football club’s communicative development. I choose AIK as a case and I observed them and sports journalists before, during and after the local derby against Djurgården. Furthermore, I analyzed AIK´s content in their own media channels and media’s coverage of AIK-Djurgården. Finally, I conducted qualitative interviews with representatives from AIK and three sport journalists at three Swedish newspapers. My study revealed that the AIK significantly planned and applied strategic content and messaging across their media channels, consistent with the techniques used by more mature and traditional media organizations. When it comes to access to the club and players there are tendencies and signs of less accessibility, but in general Swedish sport journalists see the Swedish Allsvenskan as open and not as commercial and controlled as the major European football leagues. In the end journalists believe that the material which is produced by AIK and the other big Stockholm clubs (Djurgården and Hammarby) can be seen as a compliment, but also a competitor to the material that media produce.
